We used Bookstore for a local move in Silver Spring after hearing a lot of friends hype them up. They lived up to it. We got an estimate for a 3-6 hour move for our 3 bedroom, and they ended up doing everything in 3 hours, which saved us a lot of money. The crew was friendly and professional, they protected all of our items from damage and unloaded things into the right rooms. Because of Covid, we couldn't be inside with them while they worked, so we posted diagrams in each room of where things should go and labeled all the furniture. With just a couple of odds and ends missed, they followed everything exactly. We're hoping not to move again for many years to come but if we ever did need to, we'd call them again. read more

Hassle and stress free move. I used Bookstore for a complete move and it was a great decision. I purchased the packing service, including supplies, and moving service. It was about $1000 all in for a cross town move from a two bed two bath apartment to a house. The only prep was somewhat tidying my apartment before they arrived on the pack day (day before the move). Otherwise I didn't lift a finger that day. On move day, I had to do a bit more coordinating, packing my refrigerator, etc., but it was a smooth process. I highly recommend Bookstore movers - and full service! Had an excellent experience with my movers, Abdul, Eddie, and Nycos. They moved me from a studio in D.C. to a 1-bedroom in Arlington in just under 3 hours. That included partial disassembly and reassembly of my IKEA bed (and I was so glad I did not have to figure out how to build that thing again). My particle board furniture is not the highest quality, but nothing was damaged. In my new place, they carefully set up all my furniture exactly where I wanted. The movers were super organized and polite, and closely followed all COVID-19 precautions. I shopped around a few different companies beforehand and Bookstore had one of the lowest estimates - and the ultimate cost came in right at the estimated minimum. This would be the first time I used movers. I contacted a bunch of businesses leading to the move - over email, text, phone calls, and via Yelp too. For the sake of accuracy, I'll just share the quotes and conversations I have exchanged with businesses through Yelp. Yelp was the last method I used, so the below are communications two days prior to my requested date of service. The move was a 10-mile move, 1-bedroom suite to another 1-bedroom suite. ALS Movers www.yelp.com/biz/als-movers-washington-2) - offered a moving truck ($90), two-man crew ($90 each), miscellaneous - i.e. moving supplies, dollies, tape pads, and stretch wrap ($45), gas fee ($30), $10 per man per flight - first flight of stairs free ($20), hallways with 30 yards ($20). The quote I received was for $345. The Phoenix Movers (www.yelp.com/biz/the-phoenix-movers-arlington) - initially offered a two-man crew with a $115/hr rate plus a $125 truck and travel fee with a two hour minimum, i.e. a total of $355. They later offered a rate of $105/hr plus a $95 truck and travel fee with the two hour minimum, i.e. a total of $305. WeHaul DC (www.yelp.com/biz/wehaul-dc-washington) - offered a 16-ft truck and a two-man crew, with a $120/hr rate and a 3-hour minimum. I was quoted a total of $360. At last - Bookstore Movers had some last minute cancellations and given I had such a small move, I was quoted $100/hr for a two-man crew (i.e. this is a significant discount from the full rate of $140/hr for the specific date I had requested), the 16' truck or 26' truck, moving pads, dollies, and any other necessary equipment (with a reduced one hour minimum - from the typical three hour minimum). There is also an additional 1/2-hour travel fee of $50 to take into account. My estimate came at $250. I initiated the conversation via Yelp, filled out the online form soon after, started communication with Kate via email to finalize all details. The same day, Matt contacted me, summarizing all the details and logistics - start and end location, date of service, rate, travel fee, numbers of movers, and etc. Maurice and Michael had helped me with my move and they were phenomenal. They moved so fast! I was really pleased with the move. Items such as my mirror that I hadn't wrapped up, they did so on my behalf. They taped and secured my belongings if it seemed the boxes needed a bit more security. And all in all, they were wonderful guys. I thank you for helping me with the smooth move and for doing all the heavy lifting on my behalf. I would definitely contact Bookstore Movers the next time (but let's hope it won't be for a while to come!) and I will definitely refer friends and family to them as well. I listed all those other business for a purpose. Even after doing a 20% tip, I paid less than what I would have paid had I gone with the next best offer. I wanted this review to be better. I really did. Mainly because we used Bookstore Movers for our (2 mile, DC to DC) move due to the amazing Yelp reviews we read. PROS: The booking was easy, most (2 of the 3) movers for that day were on time, and they were timely (they estimated 4 hours and it took them just that). CONS: Some walls were dinged, things (glass and furniture) were broken due to mover negligence (even when we used bubble wrap and newspaper.. and lots of it), and the furniture that Bookstore Movers took apart was not put back together correctly. A few tips: 1. They say that if they take apart your bed, they'll put it back together for you. Just make sure they put it back together correctly. Ours got assembled backwards, thus having the supports in the wrong areas and causing the support beams to break after I sat on the end of the bed. Major bummer at midnight after a long day of moving. 2. Pay attention to the boxes that you label Fragile because they might not. 3. When doing the final walk-through, do better diligence than me and check everything. Open the fragile boxes, check the furniture, the walls, everything. End notes: 1. I called their Customer Service the day after the move and Matt (?) was super responsive and offered a partial refund to fix the broken items. Their customer service really made the experience from the beginning and continued to "right the wrongs" until the very end. They charged $160/hour and our move into a 900 SF condo took 4 hours. 2. Things that we had damaged: the foot of our coffee table was broken off, the hinge to a wooden chest was broken, two glass vases were shattered, the wooden supports to our bed were broken, the mirror to dresser is now wobbly and scratched, one of the legs to our credenza is scratched, and there are some dings on our doorways. **I'm also not dumb enough to think that moving doesn't carry along some wear/tear, but maybe the amount of damage mentioned above means more to some than others** read more

Bookstore Movers Review Not long ago, I needed to move from one side of town to the other, and a heaping handful of things, which I will explain in a moment, tumbled together and led me to go with Bookstore Movers. In the past, moving has never been a big deal for me. I never had much stuff to move. I would always just make a few trips in my car or someone else's truck and chalk it up as one terrible, but necessary, step in moving on to someplace better. Well, this time I calculated that I didn't really have time or energy to implement my usual do-it-myself strategy, so I decided to hire some movers. I went with Bookstore Movers because: 1. They came highly recommended by some friends of mine. 2. They are intelligent guys. I had the immediate impression from them that I wasn't going to have to explain everything to them 3 times; that made me trust them. 3. They specialize in apartment to apartment moves like mine was, and laid out exactly what they and I needed to know to make the move go smoothly. 4. I love books. They love books. I think I may have detected a Spinoza reference in one of their emails to me. You will likely not detect Spinoza references in emails from other moving companies. 5. They are licensed w DOT and fully insured. I checked. Anyway, they did an amazing job. Showed up on time and everything went quickly and smoothly. First class service. Great guys. read more

public speaking, death and moving are said to be the three most traumatic events in life. I'm a good public speaker and since I'm still alive, I'm not sure how scary and traumatic death is although it couldn't be substantially worse than having to listen to a speech by Donald Trump. So that leaves moving as the the worst possible action I voluntarily initiate. I hate it. I especially find it distasteful when the few younger friends who had volunteered (unasked) to move me, and said they could move everything, worked till they dropped but didn't move everything including a huge breakfront which got stuck in the hall outside the elevators. An awkward conundrum. I was betwixt and between. You can't yell at your friends--especially these two brave souls who were doing a good deed and after hours and hours of hauling stuff to and fro practically need to be taken to the emergency room for exhaustion. When you see two strong young men in great physical shape, so exhausted by their foolish offer to move me for free that they can hardly stand up, that only added horrible guilt to my already mixed feelings of their truly thoughtful offer. What to do? Stress. Anxiety. Projection of anger onto drivers of cars almost running me down in the crosswalks of DC. (I give them the universal gesture) I had given notice that I was moving. Had rented a new apartment. I absolutely had to move. I saw the reviews on Yelp for Bookstore Movers. I rarely believe what anyone says, a by product of living in DC. But 450 plus people saying great things would be hard to fake. So I called. They came---the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. You can't get the police to come on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving unless there is a murder in progress. But Bookstore Movers was undaunted. Nothing in life is perfect. I think we all know that and if you don't, wow, do you have a big surprise waiting. Yet Bookstore Movers came about as close to perfect as you can get. As to price, to tell you the God's honest truth, I don't think they charged me enough. When the chief mover told me how much to write the check for I said, "are you sure? That's all? Did you miss something? It can't be this inexpensive?" But it was. I'm an older man and hopefully will be carried out of this apartment by the coroner but if not and I move, then I will immediately call Bookstore Movers and you should to. read more

This is long overdue! Bookstore Movers came out to help me with a move in late March. They were timely, quickly helped me finish packing up, and reassembled my bed. It may have been Kris and Josh(?) I'm fuzzy on the names. They were great guys who were funny, helpful, friendly, and not creepy at all. Very respectful, no weird questions. (Probably, I and my housemate came off as a little creeperish - because eye candy!) So Mea Culpa. Meli may have loud-whispered "Is the heat on" at some point. Eek! But in all earnestness, they were great with the household mutts. They've got a great easygoing professionalism. Can't recommend highly enough. We actually recommended to our new neighbors - and lo and behold! They used bookstore movers a few weeks later. At that time I'd just purchased a heavy a#$ rustic wood futon. Seeing the big truck with "Bookstore Movers" brightened my day. I knew my housemate and I wouldn't risk a broken neck or twisted ankle hauling heavy,cumbersome furniture upstairs. I flagged them down thinking I work out a payment for this task - all 5-7 guys just happily ran in and had the futon placed upstairs before I could finish trying to get some business settled - they wouldn't even take a payment! I tipped them out and away they drove like a brawny, good deed doing, truckload of sunshine. Marvel - there has to be a comic in here somewhere! I was skeptical at first... I can't recall ever seeing 5 stars for a services company, let alone one with over 400 reviews. But this moving company was phenomenal and deserving of every star possible. I can't recommend them more highly. We were only supposed to have three movers but auspiciously ended up with a fourth and all four of them were superb. They all were extremely personable, attentive, and efficient. I had a number of meaningful pieces of furniture and art that I was nervous about having to move. But, during this move, there wasn't a single moment where I was worried about them. They addressed all of my concerns and treated each of the pieces like they were there own. Everything fragile or valuable was handled with the upmost care. They are a bit expensive at $150/hr but there truly are no hidden fees or taxes. And for the amount of stress they save you from not having to worry about any aspect of your move, it's worth every penny. read more

I am surprised because fellow Yelpers have positive things to say. They were almost argumentative in their emails and suggested we use another company when we asked what their insurance policy is - weird. I am disappointed because I love the business model. They are friendly, they are punctual, their pricing is fair and reasonable and they do not EVER try to manipulate the time to get more money out of you. I have moved enough times to know that many, many companies out there will take advantage of you in every way they can - but not these guys! We've used them twice now - the first time was in 2009 when my fiance was moving in, and the second time in May when we moved into a new place. Both times the move was smooth and easy. They wrapped our furniture, wrangled our giant, 200 lb couch out of our tiny doorway like it was no big deal, and were done in no time at all. Honestly, I can't imagine us using anyone else. I decided to use Bookstore Movers after reading all the Yelp reviews and I am glad I did. The last moving company I used was absolutely AWFUL. They were 8 hours late, charged us double, etc. Although they arrived about 30 minutes late, they called me three times to let me know they were running a little late, where they were, and their eta. They were professional, fast, and hardworking. We were just moving down the block, so my girlfriend and I were planning on walking over a bunch of stuff ourselves and just using the movers for the big stuff. Bookstore Movers were so efficient that they were able to take ALL of our stuff in the original time they quoted. Their quote was spot on. There was no bate and switch like you see with a lot of movers. They didn't try to upsell anything. I will definitely use them again next time I move (hopefully not for a while!). read more

I know capitalism and monopolies and all that, but these guys should be the only moving company allowed to operate in the DC area. I've moved about every year, if not more, since I've been up here and had just about every combination of movers (from professional rip-offs to exes and some random guy off craigslist), but never have I had such a professional, pleasant, and affordable move. The next time I move (which at this point, I'm sure will be soon), I'll make sure to plan it so that I can use Bookstore Movers again. Moving is a pain, even when it's just 10 blocks to a bigger better place in the same zip code. My boyfriend and I have had overlapping apartments for a month so we tried to move as much as possible by ourselves in his Toyota Matrix. Well, there comes a point when you've done all you can and you have to call in the big guns for the queen size mattress and IKEA dresser and computer chair you refuse to disassemble. I emailed several places and reviewed a lot of options but Bookstore Movers stayed consisently at the top of my list. They respond to email quickly and with detail. They were able to offer me a single hour of service without a huge minimum fee. They showed up early and were super friendly and cool guys. It was raining slightly the morning of the move but they came prepared with blankets and tape, and for $10 extra they had plastic mattress protectors. Everything was done within the hour. For anyone who's ever moved, you know it sucks. For me, moving ranks right up there with the top three things that I deeply resent - (1) Injustice. (2) Racism (3) Moving. Although sometimes (particularly in the days leading up to the move), (3) gives (1) and (2) a run for their money. And, yet, until you've used a professional mover, you don't really realize what "comparative advantage" really means. Sure, you've got arms and legs. You can pick up stuff (even heavy stuff!) and move it yourself. You can rent a truck. You may even have some friends you can ply with pizza and beer to help you. But don't do it. Someone else is better than you at moving heavy stuff. Down elevators and up stairs and stuff! And once you've seen Bookstore Movers in action, you'll never want move yourself again. I moved yesterday with an amazing Bookstore Movers crew (Phil, Earl, Delonte - holla!). I had a 1-2 pm scheduled start. They called me at 10:30 and let me know they'd be early. At 11:45 AM, the crew started moving from my 9th floor apartment of a high-rise building in Silver Spring. At 2:00 PM, I was waving goodbye to them from my 3rd floor walk-up apartment in DC. I'm sure that other companies would have just been moseying in at the time I was setting up my new place. Even my concierge at my old apartment was impressed. And she's seen quite a few moves in her day. She asked for their card! From my initial request for a quote to the communications day of, everything (and everyone) at Bookstore Movers was professional, polite, knowledgeable and friendly. Even when different people passed off the communications, it never felt like I had to restart the conversation. For lovers of system and process (guilty!), watching the crew work was super impressive. When you see people good at what they do, you just gotta love it. It's tough to do backbreaking work like this, folks. And for people to do it with good cheer is lovely to experience. Five stars, Bookstore Movers! And if you count that fact that my roommate and her boyfriend also used you for our coordinated moves, you can count it a 15-star review - which I somehow think is still less than you deserve. I trusted fellow Yelpers and booked them a month and three weeks in advance (especially since it was during the height of the summer / early fall moving season). They gave an estimate (which turned out to be spot on), and we confirmed a date and time. Several days before the move, Matt got in touch with me (without my prompting him) to confirm everything, and let me know who would be doing my move. He even provided their individual e-mail addresses and phone numbers in case I needed to reach them on the day of, which was great. The guys arrived on time, and even though we had some elevator issues, they didn't sit around. I mean - they really hustled to get things done, move things closer to the elevator, etc. I had forgotten to let them know that my mattress and couches would need to be wrapped, but they went ahead and wrapped those up with no extra charge. My furniture isn't nice or delicate or anything, but nothing was damaged or broken. My new place had hardwood floors, and they didn't scratch anything either. Plates, glasses -- all arrived intact. They ended up spending around 4.5 hours for the entire job - no breaks, but charged me only 4 hours of time. All in all, I was very pleased with the way they did everything from start to finish. Bookstore Movers handled the packing of my home and my move and they did an excellent job. Moving all of the belongings I worked so hard for as well as my sentimental items like trophies into a dark, cold storage unit was an emotional experience for me and all four of the movers were very kind and respectful of my belongings. I felt like they really cared to not damage my items and was happy to have their time run slightly long because of that. Overall, the estimate was close to the actual hours worked for both jobs and there was good communication from Bookstore Movers through the entire process. I'd gladly use them again. read more

I had a great experience with Bookstore Movers four years ago--good price, quality movers, and very nice schedulers. However, we used them for another move recently and it seemed like a different company entirely. The initially quoted price was average at best, but we went ahead with them because we expected the quality of service to remain high. This was not the case: the movers were very slow, which increased the already uncompetitive price, and yet they were not careful with our belongings. Many boxes that were clearly labeled for certain rooms were placed in entirely different areas--bedroom boxes in the kitchen, kitchen boxes in the basement, etc--which meant quite a bit more work for us when they left. Also, two bed frames were reassembled improperly, one of which had a middle support bar that was left out entirely (we later found it lying on the floor), and quite a few items were left at the original location for no apparent reason, without our approval or even awareness. I hope that our negative experience this past time was a fluke, but we will not be using them again read more

I have never used a moving company before, and with all the horror stories I hear from people using companies where the movers never show up and the hidden costs & fees tacked on at the end by the movers trying to exaggerate the time, I was quite worried. However, I decided to do some research and asked for quotes from the moving companies in the DC area - Bookstore Movers was the only one that replied back with specific details, their reasonable rates, and confirmation of the appointment. In addition, the other movers that will be present on the moving day were also CC-ed on the email so that everyone was aware of any last-minute changes and all that jazz. When the guys showed up, they were all incredibly SWEET, extremely NICE, wicked FAST and EFFICIENT, awesome HARD WORKERS, and the best part - they were VERY CAREFUL with some of the fragile pieces I was worried about. They had an organized system in getting the stuff out, load the truck, and were EXPERT PACKERS to make sure there was more than enough room to fit everything in. I was amazed and blown away - the guys were very PROFESSIONAL, HONEST, and just plain AWESOME. Any words synonymous to 'awesome' is what this company should be described as. I will always and forever request them in the future for any moves, and I will always and forever recommend them to anyone - you will not be disappointed - me with my crazy expectations, these guys exceeded every single one of them. Bookstore Movers was recommended to me by Riley S. (who left an amazing review on here as well). Each of their 5 stars is beyond well-deserved. If you could give extra stars on here for outstanding customer service, crazy friendly staff, knowledgable team, prompt, REALLY QUICK and very flexible/accommodating - this company would get all of them. Here is my experience and why I will never stop singing their praises: 1. Submitted an estimate request online and w/i an hour rec'd a response w/ a full estimate attached. Booked them immediately. 2. I had to adjust my moving date a week out and they said it was no problem and rescheduled me for the date later in the month that I needed to move. 3. Connected with me a week out out to review my move, location, time, confirm the amount of boxes and furniture and confirm the time that they would arrive. 4. My move was scheduled for Monday 3/3 aka MARCH SNOW STORM DAY this year and on 3/1 their team emailed AND called me to let me know that they were still on schedule for Monday, but if anything changed due to the weather, they would let me know immediately. 5. 3/2 - They called and emailed again and said, things weren't looking good w/ the weather, but still on schedule as planned. Confirmed they would call early in the a.m. and give me a final answer since they were still hoping to accommodate the move on the date/time scheduled. 6. 3/3 - 6 am (5 inches of ice and snow) - They called and emailed me and said they had to reschedule b/c of road conditions and safety (TOTALLY understandable) but they knew I had to be out of my place ASAP. They re-arranged their schedule for Tuesday, 3/4 and sent over 6 movers to my 1 BR/1BA apartment. They arrived at 2:30 ON THE DOT as promised and moved everything out of my place, packed it in the truck and were back on the road to my new place in 1 hour. As a side note, you need to understand that I had 50 boxes, a king size bed w/ headboard, a sectional sofa, a 90-lb lamp, a 300 lb card catalogue, a massive wooden mirror that weighs a ton and a credenza that took 5 large men to move it into my place...I have a lot of $h!t and a lot of it is HEAVY. 1-hour was crazy fast to be in and out. 7. The team was equally as quick moving things into my new place. They are very familiar with all of the apartment buildings/docks/freight elevators in DC and were even telling me things about my new building that I didn't know yet. :) When all was said and done, we were finished in a total of 2.5 hours. That includes the time that it took to get from one place to another and get situated in the loading dock. You may think that this company is way too good to be true, but they are the real deal and they are amazing! Other companies (big and small) need to take lessons on customer service, teamwork and just being kick-ass from Bookstore Movers. PS: Ask them about their backstory. What an incredible experience. Found them on Yelp - reached out and had a quote (which ended up being right on the money). They were responsive, efficient, friendly, focused, courteous and above all they took very good care of my things....and they were friendly with my dog. Even took my sofa apart to get it into the apartment and the put it back together.... I had Alex and crew for both the packing job and the actual move - helped me carry things to dumpster, load our car and was simply the best. I have moved many times in my career and these guys go to the top of the list!!! If you want an easy, honest experience, then this is your company. All done online, but very accurate quote. My manfriend in D.C. recently decided to move out of his awful hole of an apartment into a less awful apartment on the hill. I offered to visit and help him move and then realized that we were simply not equipped for such a thing. We were a bit wary of hiring a mover because they're often large, careless and cold (I can say this as a former moving company employee). But we took the plunge w Bookstore Movers and we're happy we did! We set the move up via email with Matt who was prompt, thorough and friendly in his responses. He answered questions I didn't even know we had. The day of the move Nik & Craig called beforehand to check in and make sure everything was still on. When they arrive (even earlier than expected which was awesome) they went straight to work, hauling all of my manfriend's possessions up his narrow staircase (basement apartment) without complaint, even for all the heavy, junky items. They zipped through the work efficiently and were also super friendly and funny the whole time. Some other reviewers have mentioned this, but you really do just want them to stick around after the move to have a beer, maybe play some foosball. Moving is an odious task but Bookstore Movers made it as painless as possible. I'd definitely recommend them to anyone who wants to avoid the tortures of moving. read more

The folks who answer emails were on the ball with the certificates of insurance I needed for my office landlord. The movers worked smoothly as a team and also communicated very well with me. Uncomplaining, tactful and patient. I learned that saying, "this is the end result I want, can you please make that happen?" was the best approach. Then I just had to stand back; they would make it happen and then double-check that it was right. They really are the experts. Moving with Bookstore Movers was a seamless and professional process from start to finish. From the quote, to pre-move communication, to day-of moving, I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. James, Howard, and John moved me from one side of DC to the other in 2.5 hours and did an excellent job, I couldn't recommend them more. They were friendly and efficient, even offering to wrap up some items I wasn't moving that one of my family member was taking. Also, they called me 2 hours before my moving window started and asked if they could come early, which is great because I had requested an earlier time from the beginning. I hired these guys last fall when I was moving from the Hill to upper NW. When I contacted them, I didn't know exactly where I'd be going (I found my place last minute), but they said to just let them know when I knew. The price they quoted me was way less than any other place I contacted. The guys were quick, careful, and were awesome people in general. They'd quoted me for two hours, I believe, but it took about two more because my bed frame was unexpectedly really difficult to take apart. They didn't ask for more at the end of the move--I only had to pay the amount that I was first told. Now THAT is a sacrifice and some excellent service. I'm moving again, and I'm hoping they'll be available! From start to finish, they provided the most stress-free moving experience I've ever had. read more

If you use a service infrequently, you want to use the best because you won't have opportunities to evaluate all the competitors. Moving sucks (especially when you just moved in to a new apartment only to find mold and you need new movers to get you out of there asap!) The scenario above is exactly what happened to me. With friends, I rented a U-Haul to move myself into a new place. I ended up canceling my lease and needing to leave the place 4 days later. At very short notice, I contacted Bookstore Movers and they were able to make time for me the very next morning. They were prompt, polite, handled my things with care, and we're as speedy as can be. I was really hesitant about spending money on movers when you can just do it yourself with a private a crew and a U-Haul, but these guys were so great--the money was very well spent. Another perk, they handle everything via email which is wonderful for busy DC folk who don't want to waste time sitting on the phone. Don't bother with any other moving company. Let me add another 5-star review for Bookstore Movers. I booked them sort-of last minute. They got back to me immediately and we planned for a 1-3pm timeframe. The day of the move I received a phone call asking if it was OK if they were early. That's a first for me. They sent five movers and all of them worked quickly and carefully. All the movers were polite, introduced themselves and were extremely helpful. Every piece of furniture was covered and they even brought bags to move my mattress and box spring. The whole move took 3 1/2 hours including travel. My last move with a different company took twice as long for the same amount of stuff. Bookstore isn't the cheapest moving company but the cost ended up being similar to the last move since it was done so quickly. Moving day sucks. Do yourself a favor and hire these guys to make it as painless as possible. read more

These guys did an awesome job moving my one-bedroom apartment across town. Booking via e-mail was a breeze, and during the move they were professional, quick, and friendly. The best part was that they were totally chill and flexible dealing with unexpected obstacles. I had the wrong information about when my new building would let us use the elevator, which extended the time to move in by about an hour. Even though they had another appointment, Bookstore Movers called ahead to their next customers to see if there was some flexibility, and put in the extra time to get me moved in.
