First time going here, called to see if they were open during Mother's Day for a quick to go order if they were. No one picked up the phone but since I was already nearby, decided to drive to it and it was open. I walked to the girl by the stand and asked for placing to go order where she told me to go behind her. The girl at the to go order was outstanding! Super personable and nice. She gave me the cheesecake and told me to wait by the bar for the other food and they should call my name. I sat next to the bar and 30 mins go by for a burger and I see a box behind the bar that was there for a bit but no one called me so I thought maybe it wasn't mine but I was there a long time for this one thing. I get up to stand at the bar which is just a few steps away from where I was sitting and then someone grabbed the box which had been there for a bit and then she said my name... I'm not sure how this process was supposed to be seamless but I wonder if I never got up, would they have kept me waiting? I don't know. It wasn't that busy at the bar in my opinion either since the bartender looked at the box and another girl did a few times but never said anything. read more

3.5 stars really, but I feel this place deserves a round up rather that down. The service was definitely lack-luster, but the menu and desserts made up for it. Southern staples with some interesting twists made it a good menu. The tomato apple soup tasted like an apple pie, and was nothing if not interesting. A check plus for the fried green tomatoes and the spinach and artichoke dip. The portabella sandwich is a hearty, healthier alternative if you're interested in that sort of thing, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The reuben was ok, although lacking in the traditional humongous mound of corned beef that reubens are known for. As for the desserts, I think I'm going to be visiting this place every Sunday for a while until I've tried them all. The $4 deal on Sundays are worth it. I had the 7th Heaven cake, which was chocolate cake with cheesecake in the middle and chocolate butter cream. It was moist and delicious, the cheese cake was awesome, and the buttercream was my favorite. While it was a little crumbly, it was still very moist, and I learned from my wife that that was due to a denser chocolate to flour ratio, making for a higher quality cake. On the road from Charleston to Birmingham a stop was needed for dessert. Boll Weevil fit the bill to a letter. The dessert menu is a fat kid's dream and the fact that it is right off of James Brown Blvd in Augusta means that after you eat you will scream, "WHAAAAAAW I feeeeeel nice!! Like sugar and spice! So good! So good!" I had pecan pie with vanilla ice cream and I was sugar powered for the rest of the drive. The Red Velvet cake is also amazing, so feel free to let the inner fat kid out and have a ball. read more

At 1pm on a Saturday the wait was 30 minutes... and it took all of that to be seated. Once seated the server was extremely nice and helpful. We ordered nearly immediately and waited... and waited... and waited... you get the idea. 30 minutes after our order was taken we got our food which was a sandwich and burger. Yep. One hour after arriving. And they weren't exceptionally busy as there were empty tables. Food was good but the wait was an issue as I missed a training class I was supposed to attend. Now since I had already missed the class we ordered cake. And what a cake it was. The cake saved this rating from being fewer stars. Very good and a huge portion. read more

The Boll Weevil is hit or miss. The food is ok. Nothing spectacular. Two years ago I would have said that it was worth the stop for the desserts. I think Mister and I really overdid it for a while. The Red Velvet is good but something has changed over the years. It's not quite as good as before. We went a few months ago after a year hiatus and nothing tasted like it was homemade. The servings are huge but the product has declined. I'm giving it 3 stars because I think the food is ok.I've not tried the cheesecakes. They may be much better than the cakes. read more

This was right across from our hotel so we had to try. It is quaint looking and was kind of unexpected. The menu that they have contains many vegetarian and vegan options. Of course what I will remember of this place the most is the desserts. You cannot miss them as you walk in. I tried the food two separate times for lunch and dinner and both times enjoyed the experience tremendously. The fried green tomatoes were wonderful. They had a light tempura batter to them and were not greasy at all. The portion size for the appetizers is huge and you could easily have them as as the main dish. The other dishes that I had were the Salmon Meridian (delicious, beautiful) and the Havanna Chicken. Both dishes were cooked perfectly, presented beautifully and tasted fresh and clean. The only downside to the experience is that the soups that we ordered were a bit sweet. Actually sweet to the level that we could not eat them. Also, the wait staff, while nice, tends to bring food right after the first course. I and the rest of the table had not even finished or taken a bite out of our soup/salad, when the main entree arrived. It would be nice for the wait staff to give us time to eat the first course before bringing out the entree. Due to this, we ended up wasting a lot of food. Overall, I recommend this place to anyone that visits Augusta. It is local, they have an imaginative menu and the service is nice and helpful. read more

I truly wanted to LOVE the desserts. My friend and I purchased three slices (Tropical Dream, Strawberry, & Red Velvet). It was my request to try this bakery as a Valentines Day gift... :( The red velvet was burned and the Strawberry was dry. I LOVE desserts and couldn't help feeling a bit let down by the overwhelming burnt bottom of one cake and the extreme dryness of another. The Tropical Dream would have gotten at least 4 stars but due to the amount of money we spent and the lack of deliciousness we tasted. This place used to be so good, but not the last time I visited (which was the first time for me in years). I brought my family here and I got the veggie burger with corn chowder. Both items were incredibly bland, pretty much tasteless. My mom got a Greek salad and said that it had no flavor either (although my grandfather said his Greek salad was fine. I was buying, so maybe he was just being polite). My daughter had the black bean quesadilla and said it was delicious. I wish I'd gotten that. She also got the toffee cake, which all of us agreed was good. The manager did knock off my mom's salad since she didn't like it, but my mom had to request that they take it off of the bill. Service was slow and the server had no recommendations for us for anything we asked. The beer was nice and cold, but I don't plan to repeat unless I just want some dessert one day and have time to spare. Too bad. read more

This review is for the red velvet cake. The red velvet cake here is ridiculously good. When one orders a piece of cake, they traditionally picture a nice, pie-shaped dessert, measuring from 16-27 cubic inches. When one orders a piece of cake from Boll Weevil, they are given a gigantic piece of cake that no human being should ever finish alone. If you finish an entire piece of this cake by yourself(especially after you have already eaten dinner), then you should question how you are able to read this because cows and horses cannot read and you are clearly a cow or a horse(or other large animal able to procure a piece of cake from this establishment). I'm so sad to give this review, but I had to. We were visiting Augusta from New England and in just a few run ins with locals we were informed that we just HAD to go to Boll Weevil for dessert. Not one to turn down the "most delicious desserts on the face of the planet" we searched it out. It was Sunday afternoon and though much of the downtown area was a ghost town, they were packed to the gills. We had no idea they were also a restaurant so we were a little confused upon entering. A woman waiting to be seated noticed our confusion and helped us to the little dessert area. After going into it I realized that area had a separate entrance... Which they don't "ever" use? Hm. That was odd that they would have bakery customers walk through the restaurant. Seems like a disturbance to diners! The cakes in the glass case were BEAUTIFUL! Like mouth watering. And the young men behind the counter were so friendly and eager to help- nice! After much ogling and debate we got a slice of "The Perfect Chocolate Cake" and "Peanutbutter Pie." Holy moly when they ever sliced that cake in front of me I almost died. The slice was HUGE. We were so excited to try it.... But: It was just ok. OK. The cake itself was sort of dry and the frosting was just meh. The peanutbutter pie was more salty than sweet. I don't think it was bad just not what I was expecting. I haven't been in the south long enough to know if this is a different style/taste than I'm used to and this is just how sweets are done down here, but either way it just wasn't that tasty to us. I walked in there on a Sunday afternoon.I stood there for about 5 minuteswithout an even as much as a hello from the staff.I then set myself and other small bar. There were two staff working behind the bar and neither one of them acknowledge my presence. One of the staff was talking to a another staff about their plans after work. Closest thing that Augusta has to Atlanta's Cafe Intermezzo! Its the perfect place for dessert. Extensive variety of fresh cakes and you can't beat the price! On Sundays its $4.59 for all desserts (instead of the regular $4.99-5.99). THE SLICES ARE HUGE. I always end up taking my monsterous slice of cake home and nibble at it daily for almost a week.. the slice is so big that it barely fits in the container they give for you to take it home! I've tried the red velvet, the 7th heaven, and the carrot cake. They were all heavenly. In general, the buttercream icing on their cakes can be overly sweet though, which is the only down side. If you want something really chocolately (and you like cheesecake), the 7th heaven is an excellent choice. All of my friends adore this cake. I, however, was pleasantly surprised by soft texture of the carrot cake and its decadent cream cheese frosting :) P.S. The portabella sandwich is pretty good too! read more

I won't spoil it for you, but he hoped to have a bright career in politics. The ambiance is great. It's an old cotton house, and has an historic and authentic feel about it. When I moved to Augusta from Atlanta, I really missed a place like Cafe Intermezzo, and this is the closest you'll get over here. You can have cake, you can have coffee. C'est tout! They have a menu of other foods, warmed sandwiches and their ilk. I tried some mushroomy burger type thing. The only noteworthy part of it was the bun, which can only be described as "biscuit-like," the rest was pretty untasty. Stick to cake, Mr. Weevil! I came here most recently for my 3rd wedding anniversary. We drank wine and ate a gigantic slice of Banana Chocolate Cake, though I was eying the Red Velvet and the 7th Heaven Chocolate as well. The wait staff was adequate: sometimes they are fast, sometimes they aint. That's the way the cookie, or cake, crumbles in this town. The service is better than most around here, which, I am learning, is just as good as you have to be in a small town. So I won't count them off for it. We were in town for the Masters and we happen to come across this place. Plus they have a variety of soups, sandwiches, and dinner entrées. We had exceptional service with our waitress, Christina. She really went out of her way to make sure that we were well taken care of. We tried their gumbo, the tomato and an apple soup which surprisingly was good. It does have a tartness to it. They have a wide righty of desserts. The pieces are more than enough for two people. There are so many cake choices, you honestly wish that they had a sampler. So then we decided to try the Tomato Apple soup(for me) and a sandwich called The Jerk (for the husband). Both extremely amazing. Came to Augusta for a work conference and this place was suggested. This is just for service and dinner. We didn't have their desserts-which is, I guess, what they are known for. I guess the Boll Weevil is the happenin' place to be in Augusta because there was SO many people and not enough wait staff. We waited about 10-15 to be seated. Another 10min for our waters. After we ordered it took over 45 for us to be served our soups! Then another 15 after we finished our soups to be served our entrees. My colleague ordered the Jambalaya and it came out cold and she had to send it back...more waiting. Now for the food: I ordered the corn chowder which was tasty and had a nice kick. For my entree I got the Salmon Meridian and it was very good! The chutney and fried tomatoes were a nice touch. Overall: 3-stars because though the food was good, I really don't think the wait is worth it. I really hate to give this place such a low score, but they have a serious cleanliness problem. My sister insisted we buy a cake because she's heard such good things about them, so we came into the bakery and waited in a short line. While waiting I had a look around and was kind of grossed out. The cake cases are filthy and look broken down, poorly cleaned foggy glass, crumbs and old looking debris all trapped in the front edges where customers can see... It doesn't look like its sanitized very often. There was a dirty rag laying on the floor right where the customer stands at the register, that looked to be covering a big rust stain on the linoleum. The floor itself looks dingy, brown and covered in dirt and stains. Especially in the corners. Definitely needs a good scrub! There was also a dust-covered fan sitting on top of the display case..... I wasn't feeling so hungry anymore by the time we reached the front. Still my sister ordered a few slices and as we waited I noticed the cashiers rinsing frosting off the knives into the hand washing sink (a health code violation I believe). And while they do wear one glove on the other hand, there was something kind of unappetizing about watching them walk across to the cooler, cut a slab off and carry it around in their hand across the room. As a chef I would put a different procedure in place, like perhaps have them bring the plate along or take the cake to a cutting table to slice it? Even if it's technically "sanitary" because they wear a glove, it's just a turn off to see. Even some of the cakes in the display case had big fingerprints on the sides in the frosting. That being said, my sister really liked the cakes, thus the two stars, but to be honest I was too sketched out by the dirty looking shop to want to dig in myself. I really do hope they make some changes and try and make it look cleaner and more appealing in there, because it's a great local business and I'd love to support it! read more

Place is dim lit and not maintained very well. Bathrooms don't have a place to change a baby and not very easy for handicap to access, Burger was dry/overcooked, potato soup was yummy. I agree with most of the reviews on here, the food was subpar but the dessert was amazing. We had the fried green tomatoes appetizer which was really good but the sauce that comes with it was horrible, I asked for some ranch dressing and it was much better. For dinner we ordered the Curious George sandwich and the pork chops with apples. The sandwich was so dry and the bread was so thick it was hard to eat and the pork chops were extremely bland. Now the dessert was another story it was amazing! We had the Hummingbird cake and the Banana Chocolate Chip. The banana has actual banana pudding as a filling.... Heaven! read more

We were told about Boll Weevil around our anniversary. After a longways in Atlanta we stopped by here and were absolutely amazed! The unassuming and very small looking place packed such a punch. The atmosphere was that of a hipster dive that hid the greatest food and well...the most nonchalant serving staff. There was not a lot of time spent on being friendly but the food itself was amazing. I ordered the shrimp and grits and my husband ordered the seafood bisque. We were told the desserts were to get diabetes for - so we also indulged and got the cakes to go. The shrimp and grits were great. The grits were a great consistency, so that as you stirred in the gravy it did not make the grits soupy. The shrimp were large and grilled to absolute perfection. They had a great grilled flavor and were tender and not rubbery (as sometimes shrimp can be). There were enough shrimp to feel as though you had enough for the large portion you were given. The seafood bisque was seasoned to perfection and came at a wonderful edible temperature so you were not waiting for the bisque to cool down from volcanic heat before eating it. The cakes were exactly as described and only the most craveable and lovingly tasty pastries in Augusta. I got the lemon cake (Canary Yellow) and my husband had the Humming Bird. For all intents and purposes these were the best desserts we have experienced in Augusta. Truth be told...I come here maybe once or twice a month just for the cakes! read more

Finally someone off the clock got my drink til the bartender came, but lamented about not wanting to work after clocking out, and another server commenting how she shouldn't have to if she's "off the clock". Not professional comments to make in front of customers. Getting a drink and a menu for a customer that clearly had been waiting, doesn't seem like a big deal. Finally the server for the bar showed up and asked if I was ready to order, when I'd just gotten my menu, completely oblivious that I'd been waiting. Ordered the club sandwich and pasta salad, the sandwich was good but the bread was cold, a hot sandwich should have at the least warm bread. I noticed food sat in the window, mine included til someone came to run it. Having worked in the restaurant business, an expediter would be helpful. I would love to give a better review, and I will be back. The worst experience was related to tip. i have put in 5 dollar tip on the card (just put number 5) and signed it. the waitress didn't realize it as number 5 and i didn't do the math to put in total, she thought i didn't tip her. when we are at parking she came out and displayed distress followed by another male waitress/manager came out and asking "Really??" with a condescending and bad tone. I asked what happend not realizing whats the issue, and he told why we didn't tip. I said i did put in 5$ and he repeated same. i have gone inside again, did the math and put in total value and the least i expect is thanks with at least courtesy sorry for misunderstanding which i didn't get. and left with a feeling that i did something wrong, i fixed it and then they let me go. my girl friend is telling me, they wouldn't have done that had if we are white. they had the audacity to do that because we are not white.
