What a great local gem. I've decided that this is my Thursday night hangout. The beers are a good price and the selection is top-notch. Add to that a bartender that never forgets anything and awesome music...what more could you want. That's right, Thursday nights include an awesome open mic. Lots of local artists and some visitors (I met a performing couple from Virginia) show up to entertain us all. You're sure to hear songs that you know and love as some of the musicians play acoustically and some with driving electric tones. Don't forget to visit the restrooms upstairs. It truly is the best bar you'd never find! If you've ever been to Nashville, this is the equivalent of Miss Kelly's mixed with Santa's Pub (and that's not just because there was a naughty Santa costume contest while we were there!). They have a full bar and an eclectic menu. Their mules are refreshing and fantastic. They also had coffee and hot cocoa drinks that were wonderful. The whipped cream tasted like toasted marshmallow. My husband grabbed a local IPA and loved it. The bartenders were friendly and fast with crafting what you wanted. I loved their recommendations and we really enjoyed our drinks! The band was really talented and fun. They were dancing, incorporating the crowd, and using not only the stage but other areas of the bar like the stage and near the back bar. It was really really fun. The locals who were there were incredibly friendly and having a good time. I will definitely be back! read more

My husband found the Fox's Lair when looking for a venue for my 35th birthday party which was a roaring 20s theme. He could not have picked a better venue. The bar itself has a history with the prohibition era and the fact it is basically a basement converted into a bar was even better! Upstairs is a bed and breakfast so we rented the B&B out so we wouldn't have to worry about driving home at the end of the night. Since my party, we have become friends with the owners and regulars at the bar. Thursday nights are open mic night, offering music and comedy. No food down at the venue but there's food upstairs. Large portions on the hamburgers and hotdogs but lacks a little flavor. The lair is the best little kept secret. Old pub feel with great live music and always something different. Bartenders are great and very attentive. Love this place. read more

I absolutely loved this place, and am shocked that it didn't have more reviews on Yelp. Perhaps other Yelper's comments about how this is a great secret gem of Augusta is indeed true! I never would have known this place existed, even if I walked by it, but it was the last visit as part of a pub run I went on in town. We seemed to turn into a quiet, suburban-ish neighborhood and go into someone's backyard. Then voila, there is a series of steps leading to the basement of a house in this suburban area and a sign overhead for the Fox's Lair. It started to pour and lightning just as we were making it to the bar. As you descend down the steps, you enter a dark, intimate basement with all sorts of cool signs and an area opposite the bar that is clearly for some type of musical engagement type stuff. The beer selection is all from bottles out of a cooler behind the bar, but there was actually a decent variety of beer types from ales to lagers to ipa's to dark beers. Hooray! The basement seating had a somewhat British Pub style to it and our group was able to scatter around but still talk to everyone sitting around the various areas of the bar. As we finished up our drinks, the group prepared to get up and run back to our starting point. However, as we ascended the steps in to daylight, it was still dark and pouring and lightning. I and one other in the group opted to stay awhile and grab another beer downstairs. I am SOOO glad we did. I had a scotch ale and the two of us sat at the bar and chatted with the bartender. She was so nice and gave us a a really fascinating history of the place. The upstairs actually serves as a guest room where you can stay like a bed/breakfast... except they don't feed you. But you can go downstairs to the bar and drink. Win. If I was ever visiting the area again I would definitely try to stay here. We had been the only ones in the bar, but people started to trickle in for a comedy show starting at 9pm. We left before anything kicked off, but this is probably my favorite place I visited during my four week visit to Augusta. Nothing crazy fancy, but it really is the intimate and unique setting that made it something you just can't find elsewhere! read more

We were dying to try this little gem of a pub in an historic inn near downtown Augusta. And it did not disappoint! My husband & I were the first to arrive at 6 pm, and immediately loved the cool nightclub atmosphere and the warm welcome we got from bartender Judy. Although we had to wait quite a while for our daughter and her friends to arrive, Judy was accommodating and happy to let us take up a long table. The decor is fun with plenty to see. We struck up a great conversation with a young couple who were guests of the Inn. (Hi Amy & Briton!) Shortly, a friendly crowd of regulars began to fill the place making it a lively party, even before the musicians came to take the stage at 9. We had a great time, the cocktails were good and the 30-somethings, as well as seniors like us, really digged the vibe! read more

This little bar is in the basement of the Inn where we stayed. There was live music and about 20 people there. Bar is well stocked and everyone is friendly. Sound inside those old brick walls is incredible. It is a hidden gem in a neighborhood. read more

The perfect listening room in Augusta. I love the size and atmosphere of this place. There always seems to be a good variety of people and even the open mic is a great night to hang out and discover new folks. Augusta's secret most entertaining bar, now divulged by yours truly for the greater good. Come on a Tuesday night, by 7:15 pm the latest, or you will be relegated to standing room only. (Earlier if coming with a group for a larger table. Coming alone is ok too - this place makes you fit right in.) The weekly Irish music starts promptly at 7:30 pm and goes until 9 pm, and is led by the legendary man himself, Dr. Fischer. Get ready for a fun, loud hour and half; halfway through you'll find yourself mouthing the words with rest of the audience. Perfect for those unfamiliar with Irish music too! I know I'll be back. There are also other musical groups on other days, best way to find out is to look at the board inside the establishment. Tip: The experience isn't complete without an "old speckled hen" (English ale), or Scottish ale for a nuttier kick. read more

This place has been a standard-setting experience for me. Clearly a neighborhood bar, but very welcoming. The selection of beer isn't something to write home about (they do have some good ones though, and are open to suggestions!), but they work for the regulars, which I have become. There's always something going on at the Lair: we've had birthday parties here, every Tuesday is Irish Folk songs, Thursdays lately have been pot-luck dinners. Definitely my best bar experience in the Augusta area! I'm really not a big bar person (not really my scene) but this is a really cool little place hidden within an inn called "Olde Town Inn" (I haven't done any business there but I'm bound to in the near future). A fun bar for everyone with as friendly staff as you could ask for and very affordable drinking (Four people on New Year's Eve with three drinks a piece coming out at less than $60) but all-in-all a wonderful experience and will definitely be going back. read more

Truly one of the gems in augusta. It's one of those places unless you have been there you will miss it and have to turn around. It's small but great atmosphere. Great bartender. They allow smoking so that would be a tick against but the venue with the bartender make up for it. I mean how often does a bartender really make you feel welcome and make you feel as a valued customer. I was in town for hospital orientation and didn't have a friend or anywhere to go in the city. I saw this on yelp and had to go on a Tuesday to check it out myself. The bartenders were really friendly and helpful and I ended up meeting a few really nice locals who hung out and chatted with me for the night. The drinks are strong and cheap and the music was good.
