This review is to sorta summarize what all the others are saying. 1. This place is for desserts! They are huge, incredibly delicious, unique, and VERY reasonably priced. Only $3.95 on Sundays - and three of us shared. I recommend the Grasshopper cheesecake or the Banana Chocolate Chip Cake. I really wanted to try the red velvet, but with so many other eccentric, unique choices, red velvet seemed too bland. 2. The non-dessert food is average. I've had worse, but it wasn't great, either. All three of us agreed. Special orders probably won't come out right, but portions are pretty reasonable. The beef on my salad was overcooked and gross, but the other salad toppings were fresh-ish and delicious. 3. The servers were nice but the service is definitely slow. We probably waited to be seated for about 10 minutes with several people seeing us (making eye contact) but walking by like we didn't exist. No "I'll be right with you" or anything. This was at 3 in the afternoon and the restaurant was more than half empty. Our waitress was very sweet and accommodating, but she, too, was slow. This place is good. It's a little unique cafe type place with cafe type foods. I've been here a few times and have always been satisfied. Its not the best place I have ever been too but it's good enough for me to return. I had the turkey & rice soup today and it sort of tasted like baby food. So I might not get that again. The salad is average but their house ranch dressing is good. The husband got the Bull Weevil burger which he said was really good; the burger itself is a pretty good size. Decided to go here for some cake and coffee. Everyone had told me this place was good so I had to check it out. So I park the car in the car park at the back of the restaurant. The door immediately at the back of the restaurant has a sign on it this is not the entrance. Walk around to the next door - another sign on it this is not an entrance. Walk to another door - another sign on it, this is not the entrance. Eventually get to the entrance but its unclear if that is actually the entrance !! I was seated at the bar as I want a piece of cake and a coffee and its evening meal time, so I was a little out of wack. A waitress comes up to take my order and is in the process of taking my order when another waitress interrupts and asks her something - VERY RUDE !! She gets back to taking my order and I order a slice of the strawberry cake with a black coffee. While I am waiting - what I believe to be the manageress for the evening is whispering with her hand in front of her mouth to another waitress about something - right in front of me - VERY RUDE. If you have to talk about something or likely another customer go out of the public area to do it not in front of customers seated at the bar right in front of you. So I then got the cake and it looks great. Unfortunately I found it very strawberry like not really a natural strawberry and after a few mouthfuls it became very sickly for me. It was a nice cake don't get me wrong just that the flavor was too much for one sitting. While I was eating my cake a waiter came to put someones check in the register while he was doing that he sneezed and it went everywhere. Even though it didn't hit me it did make me feel quite ill. Overall I think the product is good here and would like to try it again. Will I come again - probably. read more

My daughter lives here in Augusta and told me about this place. But she only told me about the great Cakes and pie's they have, and she was right about that, see my pics I posted! ( she is the blond pointing with excitement at her Red Velvet Cake!!) But what Kami forgot to tell us was how good the food is, how cool the setting is. If I lived here or worked around here this place would be on my weekly short list. I had the Turkey soup and Curious George, can see in pics also. Very good. Grammy tried the Tomato Soup that had Fiji Apples in it! and Super Papa had the Chili with a Ruben that you can see in pics also. I like this place a lot. My first visit to Augusta, catching up with old friends, I think I ate meals/cake/coffee on about 4 different visits in a 3-day time span (all friend's choice--and no, I didn't complain). Of course, the cake choice is awesome. Sure, its 90% hugeness hype, and only 10% kind of okay maybe pretty good taste... but the colors pop and are really cleverly named. That has to count for something. Good solid food with southern flair--when my own fam came to town we took them here, and they were happy. Which is good, since they paid. This is such a special treat me and my husband used to go all the time he still talks about their key lime pie but add raspberry drizzle. I was always adventurous but don't remember getting anything I didn't like. Except there was a very rich chocolate cake but I'm not sure what exactly it was called. Went for a late lunch, 1pm on a Sat. It was an hour wait (they dont take reservations). The food was simple but the shrimp and grits is pretty tasty and a big portion! We enjoyed the overall experience here. My husband's chicken/sausage/pasta dish was delicious (and a large serving). My son also enjoyed his quesadilla and chips. I wasn't a fan of my Reuben- it was pretty bland. On the bright side, my husband had enough to share and we both still had room for dessert. We ordered the Peanut Butter Pie and the Heavenly Cake with the cheesecake in it. Both desserts were amazing. The cake slice was huge- we took it home and munched on it for two more days. I went to the Boll Weevil Restaurant located in 9th Street near the Riverwalk in Augusta, Ga tonight ( March 16, 2017) because I work really close and I've heard so many good reviews on it. When I arrived, I waited to be seated. The waitress came tho great me she I told her that it would be a to go order. As I sat at the bar, a Roach crawled across the bar in front of me and then turned around and crawled back to where the beer display was on the corner. There were patrons eating at the bar and I didn't want to create a scene, so I immediately whispered what happened to my waitress and she went to get the manager, (who was pregnant) to come and speak to me. The manager merely said I'm sorry. She really didn't seem too remorseful, it almost seemed as like this was a normal occurrence. I wish that she would at least said that she'd call pest control or something but she gave no solution or course of action. Needless to say, I will no longer refer people to this restaurant nor will I ever go back. I will warn people about this, in hopes that something will be done. read more

I've had better shrimp-n-grits in Charleston,SC, but that is too be expected, as the meal at Boll Weevil had white grits, when yellow corn grits are usually a sign of the authentic dish. My husband often stays at The Marriott across the street for business so this location is very convenient. I so wish I could give a 5 star review to this cute restaurant but I can't. Mainly because of the condition of the restaurant. The front bar area is cute and has brick walls. We were sat in the back "blue room" The room felt dirty. We were sat by the window and the blinds were dusty and filthy. The walls are all marked up from where the chairs hit them. The carpet smells musty. Just overall yucky- this back room needs to be re-done. Food was ok. My husband had the salmon and said it tasted like it had been frozen. I had the sirloin and it was ok- my vegetables tasted like they had been frozen as well- very Green Giant frozen-in-a-bag caliber. This place is famous for desserts which I must say were very good. We had the Key Lime pie. This place could be amazing with a little TLC on the inside and small menu changes. read more

Don't get the boll weevil burger or the Italian club. The burger was a store bought medium grade patty on a non toasted bun. You'd find better quality at a fast-food place. The Italian Club was a boring club sandwich on a dry, too-thick, un-toasted "ciabatta" roll. The lettuce in the side salad was old, wilted and brown at the ends. Note: the unmarked door between the kitchen and the unisex bathroom marked "whichever" is actually another bathroom. I waited in line with an elderly gentleman until we discovered that. Now, the desserts aka our main reason for driving 15 minutes out of our way to come here: We had the hummingbird cake and the red velvet cake. The slices are humongous, of course, which is appropriate to their $6.99 each price tags. They were fine. The Hummingbird was better, despite the red velvet's greater fame. Sadly, the red velvet didn't live up to its hype. It wasn't bad, per se, it was just underwhelming. And dry. Very, very dry and old-tasting. Who knows? Maybe the chocolate cake would have rocked our worlds.. But judging from the rest of the experience, I kinda doubt it. read more

Came in and the service was sub par. Ordered the corn chowder which was unnecessarily sweet (corn chowder shouldn't be as sweet as my soda) followed by the fried green tomatoes which looked beautiful but tasted so-so, neither bad nor good. I then had tasted the shrimp and grits which were once again not bad but nothing to be going out of your way when there are many other better options for shrimp and grits. Finally for entrees I had the 9 oz sirloin with chipotle raspberry Demi glaze ( which the kitchen FORGOT) which was pretty tasty. In closing the desert was quite delicious, definitely above average but again like the rest of the menu nothing that would make me go out of my way to get here again. 9/7/2019 If you want life changing cheesecake the size of a newborn, this is your place. Not only is the cheesecake huge, it's made to perfection. The food: I ordered the Turtle Cheesecake and my wife got the Grasshopper Cheesecake. Turtle: A slice of creamy cheesecake heaven with a thick layer of chocolate between the cheesecake and crust. The crust is crunchy, with chunks of pecans; the top is covered with thick drizzles of chocolate, caramel, and more pecans. Seriously delicious! The contrast of soft cheesecake & pecans in the crust is a beautiful song. Grasshopper: 100% dreamy mint cheesecake with mini chocolate chips throughout, atop more delicious crust. The grasshopper is lighter than the turtle, but still brings a full flavor. I would absolutely recommend them! Can't wait to try their other desserts! read more

Let's be real. It's no secret that I have a sweet tooth, perhaps a mouthful of them. I went here for dessert - cake. The pictures were so enticing I just had to have some of this cake for myself. I went in on a Friday evening and all the staff was incredibly friendly. I ordered the classic which was a special that evening and not on the regular dessert menu. To me " the classic" yellow cake with chocolate buttercream is how you measure standards at a place that does cakes. I like all sorts of cakes- plain cakes, fancy cakes, whatever! But at the end of the day a really great yellow cake with chocolate buttercream to me is perfection. Boll Weevil's Classic was good! Not perfection, I thought as a whole it was a little dry- but the flavors were good. I'd certainly eat it again. The second slice of cake that I had was the seventh heaven. I think it was the better of the two slices that I ordered. The seventh Heaven is layers of dark chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream and a layer of cheesecake in the middle. This cake was moister then the classic, and of course richer as well. I ate off these slices for several days, and enjoyed every bite! I'll go back and perhaps enjoy dinner and dessert! read more

I noticed throughout the reviews that Boll Weevil seems to be either hit or miss. While I can only speak about their cakes, Boll Weevil has never disappointed and hopefully you'll feel the same way if you decide to come here. If you're not from Augusta, the locals will likely tell you that Boll Weevil easily has the best dessert in Augusta. Located in downtown Augusta and just short walk from the Savannah River, Boll Weevil is definitely the place you need to go if you're in the mood for dessert after dinner. I've tried a number of their desserts over the last three years and while all of them were very good, there are three you have to get if it's your first time. Keep in mind that the slices the Boll Weevil serves are enormous. If you're into having something decadent and classic, I would go with their Red Velvet. It's pretty much what you would expect out of a good slice of Red Velvet. If you're into something a bit lighter with more fruit flavors, go with the hummingbird. It's got a good amount of bananas and pineapples and you won't feel as bad having eaten a huge slice of cake. My number one has to be the 7th Heaven, which is a dark chocolate cake with buttercream icing. You really can't go wrong with any of them, but those three are what makes this place great. I've also ordered whole cakes for special occasions and I've also had only positive experiences with this service from Boll Weevil as well. Give it a try if you're in the mood for dessert! read more

Whenever I am in Augusta I always try to find time to stop by the Boll Weevil. Whether for lunch or dinner this place has great atmosphere, great service, good food, and to die for dessert. I'm not really much of a sweets person, but I always make an exception for Boll Weevil desserts. Their food is made fresh and served with sides of chips or pasta salad. If you want soup try the seafood bisque. I love the simple menu and the sandwiches (the Lumburg Club!) taste great without costing you a lot. I would recommend only eating half so you can get a dessert. The Boll Weevil has a dessert menu that changes on a pretty steady basis. This isn't the usual 4 or 5 items, but is 2 legal size pages of desserts! If you can't choose by looking at the name and description, go to the dessert case and drool. I have never had a dessert that wasn't absolutely exquisite and I tried every dessert when I was working in downtown Augusta. read more

This is honestly one of my favorite spots in Augusta! I love soups and sandwiches, and BW has the BEST! Yes, the desserts are delicious. But the lunch menu is very underrated! The tomato apple soup sounds weird, I know, but SO GOOD. Pair it with a "grown up grilled cheese" (pimento cheese and applewood bacon on sourdough) and OMG. The "curious George" (turkey and spinach dip on wheat) is excellent as well. I can never convince my husband to go to Panera, because he does not like the portion sizes on the sandwiches. But he totally approves of BW and sometimes can't even finish it. We also got the fried green tomatoes once, and they were excellent. Fried Green Tom, nachos, pork, and ribeye were very tasty with reasonable prices. It is a great place to go when you are hungry and need a moments peace. Ordered a bottle of wine and we just sat there noshing and enjoying the evening. Excellent Lettuces. Didn't like the house made salad dressing and thank goodness we were too full for those desserts. Thanks to the other reviews I knew exactly what to expect and went with the flow. Second time we went I ended up with app, salad, and dinner at my table.... And, we ordered apps way in advance of ordering dinner. This time it was very inconvenient. Can't beat the wine prices so I will probably return. read more

When I am in the south, I am all about fried chicken and the Boll Weevil didn't let me down! I tried the Creole Chicken which I thought was a creative and delicious entree. The sides of green beans and rice had much room to be improved upon though. I thought the seafood bisque was OK Overall the food was decent and the service was excellent! A group of 11 friends went there for dessert after a show downtown. We reached at 10:30pm. The dinner service had closed but dessert menu and bar were still open. We each ordered dessert which included the 7th Heaven chocolate, strawberry cake, carrot cake, tropical dream, red velvet, and Apple blossoms pie. Each was perfectly delicious and a humongous size, enough as leftovers for the next day as well. The place was neat, nicely arranged and welcoming, even that close to closing hour. I had the pleasure of being in Augusta a few years ago for a conference and spent EVERY evening at the Boll Weevil with my friends eating their desserts. As many of the other reviews tell you, the food is pretty typical and mediocre. But their desserts are divine. Brought down from up on high by the gods themselves. My favorite was the Hummingbird Cake. The only word I can use to describe the multilayered cakey goodness is ORGASMIC. I keep trying to get my friend to bring/send me some (I live in Hawaii) but he has yet to do it. One additional word of advice...share with friends. The slices are huge and I personally think sharing an orgasm is more fun than having one on your own. read more

The slices of cakes are unbelievable - enough to feed 2 or 3 people!! I highly recommend.... Service is good - but order when they are available.
