Final Thoughts: 3.28/5 Taiwanese hot pot spot where my family, friends, and I go to sometimes. Very hearty and comforting meal and a dish that's very desirable during the colder weather times. Food: 1. Thai Tomato Hot Soup: 3.6/5 They never fail with the amount of items added to the hot pot. This hot pot included cabbage, cuttlefish ring, fish balls, sliced pork, and a few other items. The items themselves don't appear to be seasoned, so they don't really contribute to the flavor. The broth itself has a nice umami, sour, and sweet flavor. By no means do I like tomatoes, but the flavor of it worked well in this broth. With that said, I believe the broth itself was quite salty. We asked for additional broth to be added to our pot to balance out the flavors. One of the items listed on their menu is coconut milk, which should add a richness to the broth, however, I didn't really get any of that fattiness and richness. The color of the broth isn't actually opaque either - It looks quite transparent actually. Not the biggest concern, but just an observation. 2. Miso Hot Soup: 3.6/5 The amount of items added to this hot pot is optimal too. They have cabbage, fish fillet, a variation of mushrooms, an egg, lots of meat, and a few other items. They were also not seasoned with anything, so no concerns with competing flavors here. Flavor wise was alright. The flavor of the miso was very subtle - almost to the point where I thought it was just a bone broth. The vegetables and meats do add another layer of flavor and "sweetness" to the broth, which I really like. My note about this broth is the color of it. My experience with miso soup colors have been different. It's typically a lighter orange color versus our broth here that's heavier on the dark caramel color. Not a huge concern, but just an observation. 3. Sauces (Garlic Soy Sauce, Green Pepper Chili Sauce, Garlic Chili Sauce, Garlic Bean Paste) Four different dipping sauces are provided on the table for you. My favorites to mix are the garlic soy sauce and garlic bean paste. If you're not too big of a broth person like me, they can play a large role with providing that flavor. My one note is that these sauces have very different and contrasting flavor profiles to some of the broths. You're probably not directly mixing these sauces in with the broth and it is your choice in which broth you choose, but just a consideration. For example, if you think about a Thai tomato based broth, a flavor like soy sauce can really change or compete with the strong flavors in the broth. Miso has a more subtle and light flavor to it, so it works better with these sauces. --------- Quality: Fair A lot of the proteins are frozen items, which is to be expected. However, it's a bit undesirable for me to see all frozen items in the hot pot like that. My expectation was that the proteins are run through boiling water at least once, but that was and perhaps is not the case. The fish balls, protein, and seafood were all frozen solid when it came to the table. I understand that it is cooked under a small fire, but I would just prefer not to see all frozen proteins floating in my pot. The meats did look of fair quality. Some marbling is seen. Other than that, the other ingredients appear pretty average. Price: Fair to expensive Prices have definitely increased and that's seen everywhere in the bay area. Average price for a pot was about $22 to $26, which seems fair for me. My family really don't eat that much, so we ordered 2 large pots. That was able to feed the 4 of us with some leftovers to take home too. My one note is the additional cost of their other add-ons. We decided to get 2 extra sides of udon and that was $3.50 each. I'm well aware of how much a bag of frozen udon (5-servings) costs and what we paid here is definitely not the ideal price for a square of udon. Service: Optimal They were quite quick to come to us for the menu, ordering, and check. Big plus (as is always) that they checked in on us multiple times throughout our dinner there. The waiters and waitresses went back and forth often, so we were well taken care of. It also helped that we were sitting right next to the cashier counter. Ambiance: Dim Lit Kind of a dim lit and darker interior here. Seems quite cozy, even though the seats are not. Their chairs are metal and benches are of wooden material. Definitely not the most comfortable or warm seating for a winter day. Fair amount of people going in and out. Location/Parking: Suboptimal to fair This restaurant is located in a plaza with just a few other food and boba spots. Quite a large area since there is a grocery store within the same space. All of the stores line up, so it shouldn't be a probably to spot. Parking wise is suboptimal to fair. You would think that with this fairly large parking spot that there wouldn't be issues, but I've definitely had days of going around in circles before getting a spot. Being placed so close together we were very aware of our neighboring table - who one of their members sneezed in our direction as we were about to eat.. I got the Beef soup at mild with a side of rice. The presentation was amazing and the soup was very hot as expected. I didn't expect there to be additional vermicelli noodles in the soup as well! It was great but as someone who struggles with hot food I ate much slower until it became bearable. One unfortunate thing was that there was a crab stick wrapper loose in my soup that I originally thought to be a piece of cabbage until it wasn't breaking. I enjoy getting hot pot and this was unique experience. As I got lower into my bowl I could feel the broth getting a bit gritty. Maybe a paste didn't fully dissolve, but it was a bit harder to enjoy as I've never had that experience with other hot pots. For my first time it was all around a decent dinner. It's nice that they stay open pretty late. I usually go for beef pot but decided to share a Taiwanese Spicy pot with my sister. I used to get this back in the day but I feel like the recipe changed a bit. It doesn't taste the same from what I remember. This time around, it was way spicer than what I remember too. Worst customer service experience I've ever had. I don't usually write reviews, but after what happened tonight, I felt like I had to. I placed an online pickup order and arrived around 9pm to get my food. I was asked to pay at the register, and after paying, I was left standing there for about five minutes with no communication. No one told me whether my order was ready or if it was still being prepared. An employee named Jay told me that someone had accidentally taken my order and that they had put in a new order for me as soon as they realized it. After the first mix-up, I physically saw Jay go to the kitchen and ask them to remake my bowl, but the staff still seemed genuinely confused about whether it had even been made or if someone else had taken it. I was told it would take another 10 minutes, so I went out to my car to wait. When I returned 15 minutes later, Jay informed me that someone had taken my order again. I honestly don't understand how the same mistake could happen twice. How does the exact same order get taken two separate times? Jay offered extra sauce for the inconvenience, but at that point I was already extremely frustrated. I didn't even ask for a refund. I love hotpot and BP is one of the first places I started going to when I discovered my love for the soupy goodness. I've been to several locations and they're all about the same - with some minor customer service plus/minus at certain places. This location is decent - I've eaten here with some friends, but mainly have ordered to go. I'll speak on my experience when ordering to go, as that's the majoring of my experience with this particular location. I've tried to order online a few times and there's been glitches with my order. More recently, it's gotten through without any issues - so I'm thankful the website was updated/fixed. I've also called in a few times before because of the glitch. My order is usually ready faster than anticipated and I'm always happy when I walk in and can grab my order to go. I know the place gets busy at times, but almost every single time I walk in to grab my order - no one bothers to help me until I've stood there and waited a few minutes and/or tried to flag someone down to grab my order. This can be upsetting, as I ordered ahead so I can get my order quickly and get going. However, it's usually not too big of a deal. The food is good; however I feel like the quality has gone down. My go to has always been the Thai version of the hotpot - over the years, it's been changed to Thai Tomato and items have been switched out. The rice came immediately after anyways and the soup not until much later. The beef on the rice upgrade tasted like old oil or had been sitting on the grill for awhile as it was a little hard. Their menu is on a QR code hanging by the side of the table, but you might be able to ask for a physical one if you can't use those. The soup gets really hot fast and to turn it off you just have to get a server to do it for you. I usually get mild at other places but mild here is way too spicy (for me).
