    Nashville sandwich
    Raymond M.

The Nashville sandwich was succulent and tender. It's enough to be shared between two people when cut in half. The fried chicken was crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The bread was soft and fresh, the comeback sauce added a creamy tang, and the toppings brought a fresh and crisp texture. One small note is that I received crinkle cut fries, whereas I had previously seen their fries presented in a twister style. The fries were good, but slightly different from what I expected.

I stopped by on a weekday afternoon and picked up a lunch sandwich. Nashville sandwich level 4 was my item. Chicken was flavorful and spicy. In fact it was slightly spicier than I would like. May be next time I should stop at 3.

Scratch Cookery is a hole-in-the-wall spot in downtown San Jose that caught my attention while I was searching for Nashville-style hot chicken. After living in Atlanta for over 10 years, I'm no stranger to Southern cuisine, and Nashville hot chicken is something I truly missed after moving to California a few months ago. I ordered the GC Nashville Hot Sandwich (Texas Toast) combo, which lets you choose your heat level and comes with fries. The sandwich was huge and very well made--juicy chicken, nicely assembled, and satisfying overall. While it doesn't quite match the iconic flavor of Hattie B's, it's still definitely worth trying if you're craving hot chicken in the Bay Area. The fries were thick-cut, twisted, and crispy, which I really enjoyed. Now for the downsides. The price felt steep--over $18 before tips and taxes for the combo. On top of that, the restaurant is located in an area with no street parking. The only option was paid parking right in front of the restaurant, which ended up costing me $20 for just 15 minutes. That pushed the total experience to $40+ for a chicken sandwich, which is honestly a hard no for me. Overall, the food itself is good and hits the spot flavor-wise, but between the pricing and parking situation, it's not something I'd personally repeat. If you're nearby or don't have to worry about parking, it might be worth a one-time visit--but for me, the overall cost outweighed the experience.

So I decided to stop in here for lunch and was not disappointed! After seeing the reviews I had to check this place out. You walk in and it's a small place where you can see the whole kitchen and the staff. Walked up to the friendly staff member behind the counter. She gave me a few recommendations and I decided to order the spicy chicken sandwich grilled cheese combo. The price was a tad steep, 22$ plus the sauces, taxes and tip it came out to 28$. However after I got my sandwich I quickly understood why. It's huge and was amazing. Every bite tasted so good! Only complaint is the fires were kinda cold. Overall this is a really solid spot! Would recommend it.

    Classic cheeseburger w/ fries

Hubby and I were craving burgers and had been wanting to try Scratch Cookery for a while, so we decided that on this rainy date night, we'd do it. It's a cozy little spot located in an alley way, with not a whole lot of seating (less when it's rainy and you don't want to sit outside), so we got lucky that it wasn't packed this night. We both ordered the classic cheeseburger with seasoned fries. We managed to snag a couple of seats along the wall counter and waited for about 10 minutes or so for our food. The first impression I had was how delicious looking and smelling the French fries were. They were so uniquely shaped, unlike any fries I'd ever had. The burger looked good, with meat smashed in with grilled onions. I was so enamored by the fries, that I started with that and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked them. Some pieces were cut like super-thick kettle chips, crisp along the edges, soft in the center, with tasty seasoning all around. I didn't need ketchup to enjoy them. After nibbling on a few fries, I eagerly dove into my cheeseburger because really, this was the real reason we came out. When I picked up the burger, I was expecting it to be hotter than it was since it had just come out fresh. I bit into it and while I enjoyed the first bite being a nice blend of soft brioche, classic American cheese, and crisp lettuce, I was really hoping the meat would be warmer than it was. The taste was fine - it didn't blow my mind. I think I was just so hung up on the fact that the burger wasn't hot that it distracted me from any flavor I was meant to enjoy. it was such an opposite experience from that first bite of French fry I had, which I really enjoyed. I would like to come back because as I was sitting there under the menu wall, I was wondering if maybe I would have enjoyed the Nashville hot chicken more. Reading through the different varieties of chicken and spice levels, I found myself thinking about the what ifs instead of the actual food I was eating. Next time.

Came here in the evening, small place tucked around the corner near the VTA drop off point. It's a small place that doesn't have enough lighting in interior where consumer eat. One middle table and the rest are edge stools or outside tables. The food is alright. Chicken is juicy and cooked well, considering how large of a piece they put in the sandwich. Which is kind of a bad thing to me because it ruins the balance of the other toppings inside the sandwich. Seasoned fries were good. Not too dry, still crunchy and soft inside.

Ordered off GrubHub and it came fast with no issues. I got the chicken sandwich with brioche bun spice level 4 and it was good spicy but not too spicy. I liked the pickles and slaw in the sandwich. The tenders came with 4 but they are huge so it's like having 8. It also came with dipping sauce. My husband got the salad with nuggets and he said it was good. Nice that they have a salad option. Overall I would order from here again for delivery as I think parking downtown would be too difficult. It was also on the expensive side but not crazy expensive compared to its competition of Starbird.

The portions are big enough to share one meal between two people. Meals average about $21. The portions are very large and made fresh. This place would be ideal to DoorDash. The food came out very hot. It was delicious but extremely hot to eat. This place is downtown so consider you might have to pay for parking. There is not a lot of seating either. The food took a while to come out because it is made fresh. I would suggest skip the hassle doordash from scratch; I assure you food will arrive hot and fresh and you won't have to deal with parking fees.

HUGE portions of food! Everything was delicious. I ordered the loaded fries & my partner ordered the grilled cheese combo. We could have easily finished the fries alone & been full. Service was quick, but we definitely felt like tourists coming in. The cooks & guy at the register were starring for quite a long time as we figured out the menu. Made us feel a bit pressured ..

Came here for lunch one day, it was a bit hot that day and the restaurant itself didn't seem to have proper AC, but it was fine they have outdoor dining with some shade. We ordered the: Chicken Tenders Level 4 Spice - the chicken tenders were pretty big and came with four of them. Very juicy and good, but level 4 spice is spicy if you can't handle spice since they use a dry spice rub for the tenders.. If spice isn't for you, I recommend the level 1-2. Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich Level 3 spice - big piece of fried chicken breast, with pickles and coleslaw and their comeback sauce with brioche bun. Good level of spice at level 3. Big portion. Both came with a side of fries but a little under-salted. The fries are soft on the insides, crisp on the outside. I liked the shape of the fries as well. Overall very good meal, had leftovers at the end too! Will come back again.

Nuggets and fries and this is half eaten. So portion size is 100/100

Service? Quick. Explanation of the heat? 100/100. Delivery? Timely. Now let me tell YOU. I got the level 1, she compared it to a bag of hot Cheetos. She ain't wrong. But also if u eat them thangs regularly, time is by 6 bags back to back and it's about that ball park if not spicer or under depending on your level. The fries? 100/100. The portion size of the nuggets for the price ? 100/100. Overall, I'd come back and get them plain the chicken is good for sure. Moist and crunchy. Fries are a nice thickness and do what they need to do. Also have a nice brewski selection that did not disappoint.

My boyfriend say a YouTube video about this place for their chicken sandwich so we decided to try. It's really the best chicken sandwich around! My boyfriend ordered the Nashville hot at level 4. And I ordered the Jalapeno chicken sandwich. The chicken breast was huge with nice crunch outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The brioche buns were nicely toasted. The sandwich was so thick that I had to use knife and fork and eat it open faced. The fries were also super good and crispy with an unusual shape. It's a small location with nice shaded outdoor seating . Perfect for a Saturday afternoon.

    Level one is perfect.

Scratch is certainly one of the well known fried chicken sandwich spots in the Bay Area but do NOT make the mistake and sleep on their burgers. Scratch is located in Downtown SJ close to the VTA rail. Parking is available along the street with of course, paid meters. You can order online making it super easy to pick up. With unpredictable downtown parking, online ordering is such a game changer to the dining scene and experience. The menu offers burgers, chicken sandwiches, and french fries. The menu is simple but its hard to order something you wouldn't enjoy here. *The french fries here are unique in shape with the curly wedge style. The thicker parts give you that nice starchy consistency while the ends give you that extra crisp you didn't know you were craving. *Fried chicken sandwich level 2- the level two is perfect for me. Just mild in heat yet still present in each bite. The chicken is huge, thick and juicy. The batter is fried beautifully to a brown crisp. *The smash burgers are one of the best smash burgers in the Bay. The patty is thin but has that seared edge. The american cheese is melty and gooey pairing so well with the ground beef. The bread is soft and fluffy with little deflation when you take a bite. If they offered water cups, this place would be better. Perhaps some more seating outside would be great too since the interior is quite small. Go check them out to get your comfort food satisfied.

What I…read morelove about it is that you don't have to chase down local food trucks by checking out their Twitter or Facebook updates to know where they'll be parked. And on top of that you get to experience a whole bunch of awesome Bay Area food trucks all in one spot. Moveable Feast on Friday nights in Willow Glen is a great foodie date night for sure. The bf and I have been here twice now (first time was still during my jaw surgery recovery phase where I was unable to chew, so it wasn't as exciting for me then). This last time we went we noticed that the most popular trucks were Sam's Chowdermobile, Grilled Cheese Bandits and Hill Country BBQ. The lines for those 3 were endless. But we did get to try come mashed tater balls and a delicious italian style grilled cheese sammich from Grilled Cheese Bandits about an hour before Moveable Feast was closing. And the bf got the very last link dog over at Hill Country BBQ, which he said was better than the Miso Dog he had over at Oh Miso Hungry truck. Let me list out what we had at the few trucks we chose to order from. Oh Miso Hungry Kimchi grilled cheese was actually not as good as it sounds. The kimchi was definitely delicious but it didn't taste right being super warm in between those pieces of Texas toast. And the Miso Dog the bf had, he liked but didn't love. MoGo BBQ Kalbi and bulgogi tacos. I liked the meat, tasted good. Not a fan of the corn tortillas they used. Barefoot Coffee The bf ordered a small coffee on drip to swing over to Treatbot Ice Cream since the guy over there told us the ice cream tastes bomb with that coffee. I had a sip of that coffee, holy shizz it was strong! Treatbot We had a scoop of horchata and a scoop of chocolate ice cream to go into the coffee. This is the second time I've had their horchata ice cream and I'm a HUGE fan for sure. Hill Country BBQ They ran out of most of their food about an hour before closing time. I liked the sauces they had out and pretty curious about the Porkolicious sauce. Looked interested! Next time, I'll be sure to try some of that pulled pork that was oh-so-popular. Grilled Cheese Bandit We ordered the small order of mashed tater balls which were okay but a bit too salty for us. Their Giuliano sandwich sure was bomb though! It came with mozzarella, parmesan and tomatoes with pesto on this amazingly soft Italian batard bread. Hands down, best thing I ate that night. I'm still very curious about what Sam's Chowdermobile has to offer but that damn line never let up! It was also extremely chilly that night, what the F happened to summer weather San Jose? But yeah, next time we'll definitely have to just stick it out and stand in line for some chowder. I would rate Moveable Feast 5 stars if they included better dessert trucks than just Fairycakes (cupcakes, which I'm not a fan of) and ice cream and candy. I want some PIES or something a bit more dense for dessert peeps!
