Nashville Chicken Sandwich combo with regular fries ($21)
    John D.

Down the Scratch Food truck turned Fountain Alley brick-and-mortar that achieved max popularity during the Pandemic. I kept hearing about their hot chicken sandwiches for years, and we finally made the trek to check them out. The Good: * Friendly service * Prices aren't too bad considering the portion size and flavor. * Outdoor dog-friendly seating * Craft brews in cans * Seven levels of heat for everyone from the spice-averse to the hardcore fire lover. * Chicken sandwiches are massive and delicious. And despite it being a breast, they kept it very juicy. * Really loved their fries; I'm not sure if they make them in-house or if they're frozen, but regardless, they're fantastic. The Meh: * Not much in the way of drinks except for the aforementioned beers and cans of soda. The Ugly: * It's located in DTSJ, so you'll most likely have to pay for parking. If you don't mind walking a few blocks, the 4th St Garage is free for the first 90 min. Conclusion: Great spot to get your spice on.

The burger here is so juicy! The grilled cheese chicken sandwich was also good but may have needed a bit more sauce. Fries were crispy. Recommended! Will be back for more

This place was recommended from a family member. They raved about the sandwiches and brought us for dinner. I was told their food was spicy but I was glad they had non spicy nuggets for my toddler. I got the tofu sandwich with 2 spice level. It was pretty spicy but overall delicious. The tofu was soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The fries was so good too. I never seen them cut that way but it gave them a great texture. I would definitely be back to try more items.

Scratch Cookery is one of the many local places hidden in the allies of Downtown San Jose. They are not far from the heart of Downtown, and definitely not far from the university. I stumbled upon this place one day while doing my random walk, so you KNOW I had to give this place a try. I had went in upon opening time, so my wait was a little bit, but I was not complaining because you know what they say: "Greatness comes when you build them up one by one." I got their hamburger with the extra cheese, and curly fries. The patty was extra juicy, and the brioche buns were toasted really well. I especially like how they added on the cheese after the patty was marinated on the grill for quite a while, but not too long to the point all of the juice was sucked up. The only down side to the food: the prices. Be prepared to spend quite a bit on lunch if you decide to go to this place, because they do end up charging quite a bit more than what the regular places around Downtown would. But the IPA beers make up for it, so it's also worth a bang for your buck. Hospitality was pretty top-notch -- my order was taken in an orderly fashion, and they even apologized for the wait as well. I hope Scratch Cookery stays around for a long while so that people can try out such majestic wonders this establishment has to offer! Ambiance was great, and I'd definitely be back again!

The Nashville sandwich was succulent and tender. It's enough to be shared between two people when cut in half. The fried chicken was crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The bread was soft and fresh, the comeback sauce added a creamy tang, and the toppings brought a fresh and crisp texture. One small note is that I received crinkle cut fries, whereas I had previously seen their fries presented in a twister style. The fries were good, but slightly different from what I expected.

Scratch Cookery is a hole-in-the-wall spot in downtown San Jose that caught my attention while I was searching for Nashville-style hot chicken. After living in Atlanta for over 10 years, I'm no stranger to Southern cuisine, and Nashville hot chicken is something I truly missed after moving to California a few months ago. I ordered the GC Nashville Hot Sandwich (Texas Toast) combo, which lets you choose your heat level and comes with fries. The sandwich was huge and very well made--juicy chicken, nicely assembled, and satisfying overall. While it doesn't quite match the iconic flavor of Hattie B's, it's still definitely worth trying if you're craving hot chicken in the Bay Area. The fries were thick-cut, twisted, and crispy, which I really enjoyed. Now for the downsides. The price felt steep--over $18 before tips and taxes for the combo. On top of that, the restaurant is located in an area with no street parking. The only option was paid parking right in front of the restaurant, which ended up costing me $20 for just 15 minutes. That pushed the total experience to $40+ for a chicken sandwich, which is honestly a hard no for me. Overall, the food itself is good and hits the spot flavor-wise, but between the pricing and parking situation, it's not something I'd personally repeat. If you're nearby or don't have to worry about parking, it might be worth a one-time visit--but for me, the overall cost outweighed the experience.

So I decided to stop in here for lunch and was not disappointed! After seeing the reviews I had to check this place out. You walk in and it's a small place where you can see the whole kitchen and the staff. Walked up to the friendly staff member behind the counter. She gave me a few recommendations and I decided to order the spicy chicken sandwich grilled cheese combo. The price was a tad steep, 22$ plus the sauces, taxes and tip it came out to 28$. However after I got my sandwich I quickly understood why. It's huge and was amazing. Every bite tasted so good! Only complaint is the fires were kinda cold. Overall this is a really solid spot! Would recommend it.

I stopped by on a weekday afternoon and picked up a lunch sandwich. Nashville sandwich level 4 was my item. Chicken was flavorful and spicy. In fact it was slightly spicier than I would like. May be next time I should stop at 3.

Hubby and I were craving burgers and had been wanting to try Scratch Cookery for a while, so we decided that on this rainy date night, we'd do it. It's a cozy little spot located in an alley way, with not a whole lot of seating (less when it's rainy and you don't want to sit outside), so we got lucky that it wasn't packed this night. We both ordered the classic cheeseburger with seasoned fries. We managed to snag a couple of seats along the wall counter and waited for about 10 minutes or so for our food. The first impression I had was how delicious looking and smelling the French fries were. They were so uniquely shaped, unlike any fries I'd ever had. The burger looked good, with meat smashed in with grilled onions. I was so enamored by the fries, that I started with that and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked them. Some pieces were cut like super-thick kettle chips, crisp along the edges, soft in the center, with tasty seasoning all around. I didn't need ketchup to enjoy them. After nibbling on a few fries, I eagerly dove into my cheeseburger because really, this was the real reason we came out. When I picked up the burger, I was expecting it to be hotter than it was since it had just come out fresh. I bit into it and while I enjoyed the first bite being a nice blend of soft brioche, classic American cheese, and crisp lettuce, I was really hoping the meat would be warmer than it was. The taste was fine - it didn't blow my mind. I think I was just so hung up on the fact that the burger wasn't hot that it distracted me from any flavor I was meant to enjoy. it was such an opposite experience from that first bite of French fry I had, which I really enjoyed. I would like to come back because as I was sitting there under the menu wall, I was wondering if maybe I would have enjoyed the Nashville hot chicken more. Reading through the different varieties of chicken and spice levels, I found myself thinking about the what ifs instead of the actual food I was eating. Next time.

Came here in the evening, small place tucked around the corner near the VTA drop off point. It's a small place that doesn't have enough lighting in interior where consumer eat. One middle table and the rest are edge stools or outside tables. The food is alright. Chicken is juicy and cooked well, considering how large of a piece they put in the sandwich. Which is kind of a bad thing to me because it ruins the balance of the other toppings inside the sandwich. Seasoned fries were good. Not too dry, still crunchy and soft inside.

    Cute dog outside of scratch.

This food was amazing, I seen it all lover social media had to come and loved very second of it. I will be back soon the food came out so fast no wait and got to sit down and enjoy meal. The energy here was lovely as well as the employees. Also met a furry friend on my way out which I loved.

Ordered off GrubHub and it came fast with no issues. I got the chicken sandwich with brioche bun spice level 4 and it was good spicy but not too spicy. I liked the pickles and slaw in the sandwich. The tenders came with 4 but they are huge so it's like having 8. It also came with dipping sauce. My husband got the salad with nuggets and he said it was good. Nice that they have a salad option. Overall I would order from here again for delivery as I think parking downtown would be too difficult. It was also on the expensive side but not crazy expensive compared to its competition of Starbird.

The portions are big enough to share one meal between two people. Meals average about $21. The portions are very large and made fresh. This place would be ideal to DoorDash. The food came out very hot. It was delicious but extremely hot to eat. This place is downtown so consider you might have to pay for parking. There is not a lot of seating either. The food took a while to come out because it is made fresh. I would suggest skip the hassle doordash from scratch; I assure you food will arrive hot and fresh and you won't have to deal with parking fees.

Whenever I'd hear about a food truck back in the day, the first thing that would come to mind is prepackaged food. However, those days are long gone! These food trucks are now capable of whipping up gourmet meals that could potentially rival any local sit down restaurant. At this particular location, the trucks only come out on Friday night, with 9-11 different trucks to choose from. They also provide live music and fun games for the family. They do provide 5 gallon buckets that are used for seats, and a couple of planks/boards that can be used as tables while you are scarfing down your food. Some folks just bring their own chairs, as those buckets eventually make your ass pretty sore. These are the trucks that will be here on Friday 10/30/15 333 Truck Chairman Truck Fairycakes Gold Rush Eatery Oh Miso Hungry Sam's Chowdermobile Sanguchon Treatbot Waffle Amore As you can see, it is pretty diverse. If you're looking for a catering food truck for a small lunch window that delivers high quality and very quick service, I HIGHLY recommend Fire and Rice. Their Hawaiian Asian fusion menu is unique and stands out compared to other Asian or poke trucks I've tried. The garlic shoyu chicken and tuna poke were my personal favorites. I tried some of my coworkers garlic shrimp & Miso tofu too...surprisingly pretty GOOD! With inflation being what it is, their food is absolutely worth the price, and they were also flexible and willing to work within our reasonable budget. I can't recommend them enough. For catering inquiries, It was a little difficult getting them on the phone so we played phone tag a lot. I suggest texting or emailing Micah or Jessica for the quickest response, as they're often busy on the truck or during service.

Final Thoughts: 4.33/5…read more They were our caterer for a work party. This is a food truck and they seem to have everything ready to be served to us. Asian fusion foods are typically my go-to choice and so I was very excited that they were providing us food today. Food: Garlic Fried Chicken Bowl: 4.3/5 The sauce on this is divine with the chicken. It's like an unagi sauce with garlic in it. It has some saltiness, sweetness, and that umami flavor. Garlic taste and scent is present, but not too overpowering, which I really enjoyed. That flavor is great, but some places really overdo it for me. Just a personal preference though. For the chicken itself, it's very tender and juicy on the inside and still has some of that nice crunch on the outside. Perhaps this is because the cut of meat is the chicken thigh. It's not super crispy because I don't believe this is being fried to order for us. Seems to be food held in a warmer until its ordered. Kimchi was the side that they had provided with this dish and I am here for that. Some people aren't the biggest fan of this and I saw that from the looks my coworkers gave it. Personally, very much enjoyed it though. That sourness and spice from the kimchi just balances out this bowl really well. The veggies are nice and crispy. Gives it that freshness. Also, very slight detail and addition, but I always enjoy the sesame seeds and furikake sprinkle as a garnish. There's a nice nuttiness to it that they provide as a simple garnish. Spicy Tuna Poké: 4.0/5 This item was alright. The flavor was also really good, but I did get tired of eating just one type of poke protein. Typically when I go to get poke, it's 2 to 3 scoops of different proteins with various sauces to change up the flavor. I did get tired of this one after a few bites. The flavor of this item was very good though. There's a nice kick from it and the flavor tastes like a mix of kewpie mayo, soy sauce, sriracha, and sugar. Very simple, but you can't go wrong with those flavors. For the side, they added seaweed salad. Again, not your average side dish. Personally, I enjoyed it, but it might not be a common or familiar side dish for other individuals. It has a nice sweetness and nuttiness to it. For texture, there's a nice bite to it, which is ncie since the tuna is very soft and doesn't contribute much to the texture component. Menu: Small Their menu seems quite limited, but again, that is normal for a food truck, I believe. The items they provide do it just fine for me. I appreciate that they also have an option for the vegetarians. The menu we were provided was limited to 4 items, which is fine since the scale of this party wasn't anything too wild and we were able to satisfy everyone with what they provided. --------- Quality: Alright The quality of the food seems OK. It came out within a few minutes for us and I don't think it takes just a few minutes to fry that piece of chicken. I could be wrong though, so no one quote me on that. Just an observation. Not the highest expectations because their limited to the space and area in general. The product they provide is very good though. Overall, for something that has raw seafood in it, it seemed quite fresh and tasty. The items aren't made to order either and it's more assemble and serve to order, but again, they seem to be making it work with the product that they are selling. Price: Estimated Because this was a catering event, I am actually unaware of how much my administrator paid for the food. What I know is that she paid for a certain amount of bowls. From the looks of this item though, I want to estimate the price of each bowl being around $16 to $20 depending on the food item provided. Seems quite average for a bowl of food these days. Service: Quick and fast Because most of the food is already prepared and ready, the interaction with them itself is very limited. They took our order and provided us with the food. Nothing too significant to note and that is to be expected with the food truck. They were very sweet though and explained the menu items to be when I had a question. Ambiance: Simple and cute food truck The design on their food truck is so cute. The riceball is my favorite because it has this very cute face and just looks darling to me. The outside has a simple design with the name and logo on top and then perhaps some of the food items they provide written on the bottom section of the truck. Doesn't seem like anything too fancy, but simplicity is best for me. Location/Parking: Wherever they travel and navigate to Because they're a food truck, they can drive to you, which is really convenient. On Yelp, it states that their located on 36 Commercial Street in downtown, which might be where their truck is serving most of the time. Again, it is a food truck though, so they have the ability to drive to you and travel around to their customers, which is quite convenient is reaching a broader group of people.
