This is my favorite pho this year. I don't go frequently during the year unfortunately (except when I'm in iron deficiency from mother nature's monthly visit and from donating blood), but I've tried many pho spots throughout South Bay and along the peninsula. No place makes pho like South Bay, but even in South Bay, there are obvious standouts. I usually order the pho dac biet anywhere I go for pho - you get a great balance of beef cuts and tendon (and sometimes tripe). Here at Pho Ly, every ingredient that goes into the bowl is premium all around. The broth is made with love and comes out nice and hot - the star anise shines and it's salted well but isn't overpowering. The noodles they use have that perfect bite to them if you let them sit in the piping hot broth for the first few minutes. I also check for phlegm after eating a bowl; I have hardly any phlegm when I eat here - a very clear indicator to me that the broth is clean! And the cuts of meat are great - I think the tri tip is probably my favorite cut. The brisket had a bit of a tougher chew so that was probably cooked a little longer in the kitchen than it needed to be - but hey, everyone nowadays is extra cautious with handling raw meat given the number of outbreaks and disease that spread in US agriculture. I don't deduct any points for that reason. I appreciate the air conditioning in the store - not too cold and great airflow so heat from the kitchen and outside aren't lingering in the dining area. Anyways, I am very satisfied from this visit. I ate no meals all day before coming here for dinner, and felt pretty awful dealing with cramps all day. Very disappointing experience at Pho Ly on Brokaw Rd. The pho broth was extremely bland and tasteless. I ordered the special, and for the price, the amount of meat was way too little. The BBH was even more disappointing. It tasted like they used the same pho broth and just added oil/seasoning to make it look and taste different. BBH should have its own rich, spicy, flavorful broth, but this definitely didn't taste like authentic BBH to me. For the portion size, quality, and price, I don't think it's worth it. I heard that a new pho spot opened in the neighborhood and thought I would check it out. Upon walking in I noticed and appreciated the open and bright decor and was cheerfully greeted and allowed to sit anywhere. Upon sitting, I ordered the Pho Dac Biet and Vietnamese Coffee. Now onto the food. Literally, seconds after ordering my food arrived. I also did see the same prompt service for every new customer who sat down and ordered. Pho Ly has to have the world's fastest food to table times of any restaurant I've ever been to. Fast and friendly service is unbelievable here. Sorry, now onto the food. The Pho is a hearty soup that reminds me of good and solid home cooked pho that is elevated. Just like if you were invited to someone's home for Pho the salinity would differ for everyone so to avoid being overly salty, the broth is very on point to not offend anyone. As I'm a person that prefers a crazy salty broth I still did appreciate Pho Ly's broth because you could taste the amount of time and love put into each bowl. The taste of spices are pronounced but not shout in your face. The broth is hearty and definitely has a lot of time out into it but not overly salty. One thing I personally do appreciate the fat layer that is provided as 95% of pho restaurants exclude that entirely. I often need to order that on the side and 60% of pho restaurants charge you 6-8 dollars for the pho broth fat. It really does help with the mouth feel and richness of the dish. The quality of meat was up there and cooked to perfection. The tendon was soft but not falling apart, exactly the way it should be. The meat was also feeling and tasting of great quality. Lastly, the fresh pho noodles were on point and perfect soft while firm. They stayed together and did not break apart while eating which is often a huge annoyance. If you're looking for a comforting and hearty bowl that doesn't leave you feeling heavy or needing a gallon of water soon after, Pho Ly is the spot. I even spent the next 7 hours doing a lot of manual labor and did not realize that I didn't eat the whole time. Pho Ly definitely filled that gap and got me through. Oh, and the Vietnamese Coffee. The Vietnamese Coffee at Pho Ly was great. Not too sweet and not too coffee forward, a perfect balance for easy drinking. Also, didn't give me the shakes from being wayyy too caffeinated which was nice. All in all a great meal at Pho Ly! read more

Pho dac biet & ribs #1 ($22)- Honestly they should just call this the pho dac biet ribs cause the & implies that you get all the stuff in the regular pho dac biet plus ribs but it's really more of an alternate version pho dac biet lol Anyways really liked the broth and the meat quality. Felt the beef rib meat was way more fall off the bone than at pho du boi. The broth was tasty and savory... I might put the taste at top 5 of all the pho spots I've tried in SJ The owner was kind enough to let me try their Viet coffee on the house and surprisingly it was really good. I've had a lot of pho around San Jose, and this place is easily in my top 3! I got the #1 dac biet with the rib bone, and my girlfriend got the #2 dac biet. The broth was packed with flavor, and the soup came out nice and hot, which is a huge plus for me.
