I know a good amount of people who do not like hot pot or shabu shabu, but I am a fanatic. I can't help it. I am addicted, especially during the winter season. My favorite hot pot was Jazzcat's Thai Spicy, way back in the day when they were still on Valley and 6th. I used to go there 3 times a week after I got off of Boiling Crab. After their new location opened on Del Mar, I stopped going as often. Maybe once here and then with family or friends. Although it did taste the same and the portions seemed to be slightly bigger, prices went up and they no longer served their wonderful milk/green/black teas that I longed for. With that said, my hot pot phase strayed for a while until I discovered my new found love - Boiling Point! BP for short, this place has YUMMY written all over it. I go here at least once a week, twice if time permits. I am truly addicted. It is baaaad. There are three locations in California - Rowland Heights, Monterey Park, and Arcadia. They serve several types of hot pots: house special (with stinky tofu), beef, lamb, seafood, kimchi, curry fishball, and tomato-vegetable. They can be no spicy, 'tiny' spicy, mild, medium, extra spicy, and flamin' spicy. My personal favorite is the Lamb. I do NOT eat or can tolerate the smell of stinky tofu so I definitely opt out of that one. Beef is second best, then curry. But if I am a vegetarian, I would do the curry. Tomato-vegetable is not bad, just a little too healthy in my opinion. Every hot pot has their own components, which brings out the flavor of the broth. But generally they all have the meat, tofu, bean curd, imitation crab, small amount of vermicelli, lettuce, and either fish or regular meatball. Each hot pot comes with either rice or vermicelli noodles. BP also offers several add-ons like more meat, tofu, an egg, noodles, pork blood, etc. I always add on the tofu skin and the udon noodles. Whenever we go in a big group, we also get pork blood and intestines. As with other similar hot pot restaurants, there are three dipping sauces - soybean paste, garlic soy, and a (SPICY) chili oil. I like to put a scoop of the soybean paste, three scoops of garlic soy, and a dab of the chili oil. Perfect! Then when your hot pot comes out, dip your veggies and meats into your special sauce.
Haha BP also has dessert! Shaved snow - mmmmm, taro is my favorite. It comes with real taro chunks, mochi, and red bean. Green tea is not bad. The actual snow is good but they put a big blob of flan on it, which is not good at all! I would much rather have Dip's Grill's caramel flan ;) If you want to go all out, you can order one of their teas as well. I have only had the watermelon juice (by accident). I am usually stuffed from the hot pot broth and the dessert to even think about having a tea. I think the Arcadia one is the best (taste-wise). It is spicy and more flavorful, at least for my Lamb hotpot. If you are going to the one in MP, get the beef (tastes better than the lamb, at this specific location). But at the other two BP's, get the lamb! No matter which place you go to, the service sucks. They are fully staffed, yet they are really slow on taking orders, getting drinks, following up, etc. It really ruins your hotpot experience, but the food definitely makes up for their service (or lack thereof). I have gotten the hot pot to-go before. It tastes the same as dining in, but the whole experience is just not the same. All-in-all, if you like hot pot/shabu shabu or are up to trying something new, eat at Boiling Point. When you are eating hot pot, it comes down to two things: the broth and the sauce. BP has mastered both. Their soup base (at least in the lamb, beef, and curry) is SO good - so flavorful and tasty. Good blend of ingredients and spices. It meshes so well, you just gotta try it. Then there is the dipping sauce. I can't believe I used to eat it without the dipping sauce, but now that I have come to my senses, you NEED the dipping sauce (all three of them!) Mix it up and you got yourself one heck of a meal. If you come during lunch, the hot pots are $1 cheaper and you get a free green or black tea. (Note: each location is really small, so come during off hours or else you will be waiting at least an 1+). And save room for the taro shaved snow because it is that good. read more
