This is a sad day... but let me preface this review with the following:
At Blue Collar, including today, the food is always prepared perfectly, tastes amazing, they use amazing ingredients, and their recipes define the term "blue collar" perfectly.
So you will enjoy the food and should try it, but my 1-star review is for something else...
When my wife and I go to Blue Collar, it has always been because their Grilled Cheese Sandwich was the absolute best. A classic Grilled Cheese, even served in a paper plate.
Amazing!
Today we went for lunch, and my wife ordered it again. If you look at their menu, at least as of this writing, the classic Grilled Cheese is still on the menu (without avocado, etc.).
So when it arrived completely different it was a huge disappointment.
But the disappointment was two-fold:
1. You don't mess with a grilled cheese sandwich. Even when some great places make different types of grilled cheese sandwiches, the basic concept is the same. You have 2 slices of amazing bread with some combo of cheese and *sometimes* other stuff. But you have cheese and lots of it, and then it gets grilled on griddle in some way. And it comes to you toasted golden and amazing!
It does NOT come to you with avocado, tomato, back on a roll, where the tomato is still crisp and chilled, which what is essentially a BLT without the L, and to make matters worse, with very little cheese!
And that is what we got.
Under no circumstances would any grilled cheese aficionado call this a grilled cheese sandwich, it was just a sandwich.
In fact, this is a huge opportunity for other Grilled Cheese establishments to really poke fun at Blue Collar and take them down a notch.
2. The second unacceptable part is that when we asked if there was a mistake with the order, we were told that no, that is their grilled cheese. My wife ate it and when done, and the manager or owner (I don't know) came to take the order, we just had to ask again. We reminded them of the Grilled Cheese sandwiches they used to make, the one we have had many times. And to our shock, this person insisted and insisted they never made it this way.
Well, not true and luckily Im one of those people who photographs the food they eat, and I will post a photo of the Grilled Cheese they used to make.
But, when he told us that, we let him know that couldn't be, at which point he started to change his tune. He said that they decided to change the grilled cheese sandwich (a ha!), because the old way was just too boring, which was said in a very condescending way. That they decided to make it more interesting and "deluxe" it up.
Well, newsflash!
As I mentioned briefly, you don't mess with a classic!
The best grilled cheese sandwich is not about making it all "deluxe" or changing the concept. Its about the exact same concept, but with better cheese, or better yet MORE cheese. You want to add shredded short ribs to the mix, sure. Bacon? absolutely.
But you never ever ever dilute the cheese, or don't grill it in the classic way.
In other words you make sure it really is a grilled cheese sandwich, not some avocado BLT without the L (again, which is what we got).
And then to double-down in a condescending, defensive way, instead of acknowledging what we, the client is saying, and trying to listen, and offering some actual customer service is suicidal in this business.
Because guess what Im doing? Im writing a 1-star review, and when people ask, this is the last impression I will tell them about.
And in a competitive, sophisticated market that Miami's food scene has become, this is a definitely no on...
Anyway, take a look at the Grilled Cheese (if I find a way to attach it) that they used to make, and just know that is NOT what you will get now.
