Enjoyed a delicious Saturday brunch at Blue Collar. All the food we ordered was tremendous and there was so much left on the menu that also sounded incredible. We went with the Duck Muffin, Breakfast Burrito, and Bread Pudding.
Quality
The first item I tried was the Breakfast Burrito, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Scrambled eggs, chorizo, gouda, and shallots, wrapped up and covered with a tangy chipotle sour cream. It really was the chipotle sour cream that made the dish as it provided a perfect compliment to the rich filling. My girlfriend did not love it to the same degree as me, but she is not a fan of scrambled eggs, so if you are picky about how your eggs are cooked maybe look elsewhere on the menu. However, she and I were both huge fans of the Duck Muffin. Duck breast, gouda, a sunny-side up duck egg, all on top of a muffin with aioli and jus. The taste profile is amazing and the use of duck in several different components is perfection. As a side for the dishes we went with the potato hash, which I was also a huge fan of. Potato chunks with onions and peppers with great seasoning, just add a bit of hot sauce or ketchup and you are golden. Then we chose to go with the Bread Pudding instead of the french toast as a sweet ending to the meal. The Bread Pudding was the only item that didn't wow me, but it was just because I felt it went a bit heavy on chocolate. It was set up as a heath bar bread pudding with whipping cream and it was good, just too rich in chocolate.
Quantity
Blue Collar definitely gives more than fair portion sizes. The Duck Muffin was a huge dish and the Breakfast Burrito was also fairly large. The Bread Pudding was also more than enough to be shared.
Value
The prices are maybe a little high for brunch, but I absolutely loved the food so I'd gladly paid a bit more. With the huge portions and the high quality it is still a very reasonable deal.
Ambiance
Blue Collar is a part of the quickly up and coming Little River area of North Miami. However, it is extremely easy to miss the restaurant driving by. It is a small little shop that is part of a hollowed out shell of an old motel. The restaurant has a small outdoor patio adjacent to the road and then an equally small indoor dining space. On this occasion we brought a puppy along so we sat outside and it was no problem at all. They have a few bushes to block off the street and they also have an awning in case the weather is not the best. Inside is very simplistic with a small diner feel. It has an open kitchen area and above it is the magic blackboard that lists out the daily specials. The only other real unique decor is the lunch-boxes that line some of the walls. The music selection was 90s rap classics and I personally loved it and felt it fit great. In the end this is a place that focuses on food and not the experience and the food is good enough to make you forget you are in the front of a broken down old motel.
Crowd
Since we knew we had to sit outside we arrived just as it opened. On a holiday weekend for Saturday it quickly started to fill up. By the time we left the entire outside area was full and about half of the inside. It was a diverse mix of ages and groups with one bigger party inside, but mostly small families and couples outside. It is definitely a very casual and no frills kind of brunch.
Service
The staff was nice, but nothing over the top. Once again Blue Collar is about the enormous and delicious food. The food came out quick and our server checked on us the perfect amount.
Parking
So there is a very small lot right in front of the motel that is a disaster. It is free, but honestly it may be worth heading down a block and paying for street parking. I basically got blocked in and took about 15 minutes to manipulate my way out of the crater filled motel parking area.
Extra
Blue Collar is all about delicious comfort food. The brunch was absolutely tremendous and while you may not leave bragging about the ambiance or the service, you will be too distracted by the food to really even care. I will absolutely be back and want to try out some of the lunch and dinner items as well. read more
