I want to start by saying the dish is exactly what it's suppose to be. The fish was fresh and tender. My only suggestion is they put garlic butter on the fish and veggies, It would take the dish to a 6 out of 5! Several years since I'd last visited Clive's. Now it's twice in three months. I had the jerk chicken with white rice & steamed cabbage on the first visit. The food was pretty good. It was satisfying for Jamaican food, although the chicken could stand to be a little juicer and have more jerk flavor. The steamed vegetables were cooked to perfection. Also had the "ginger beer" which is really fresh ginger juice. A hair too sweet but the spice of the ginger felt great. Dined in on that visit and service was very friendly and efficient. Second visit was a Saturday evening takeout order. They were bussssyyy on the takeout side. (Dine-in and takeout are separated.) But service was still just as friendly and efficient. Wish I caught the lady's name who helped me because she was so nice! For takeout, I had oxtail with white rice and steamed cabbage, that spicy-sweet ginger juice again, and a beef patty - the only one left was spicy so I took it, although I prefer mild. The oxtail was cooked to tendee perfection with a rich seasoned sauce that the white rice held onto like a champ! Alongside that good steamed cabbage, I was well pleased with my food. The price was reasonable too. Only downside was the patty: it was dried out and although I prefer mild, when I hear "spicy", I'm looking for spicy. It was not at all spicy. My jerk chicken was decent for the most part . They use what appears to be a dry rub (very visible) in addition to the already seasoned chicken . I thought the combination was ok but not my favorite flavor profile for jerk chicken . Perhaps the amount of the dry rub was just too much or something but it was just ok to me . The rice and peas was abit dry as well and didn't taste of the typical coconut milk but helped by the side of oxtail gravy . The plantains finally weren't super ripened as I'd like them but were ok . The meal didn't come together nicely enough for me to say that I really enjoyed it . Everything individually was just ok . I also was able to sample the bbq chicken and it was very similar tasting to stew chicken . I don't know if I like it or not but I did notice grill marks so I know it was atleast made on the grill . We found Clive's Café on the best of Miami list. I am so happy that we did. I ordered the jerk chicken with macaroni and cheese and plantains. My son ordered the jerk chicken pasta with a side of macaroni salad and plantains. We were both blown away with how delicious the food was. The jerk chicken was to die for. I cannot even explain the flavors. The plantains were the best I've ever had. The macaroni and cheese was pretty good as well. Best of all we were served by Clive himself. With so many really good places, not just in Miami but also in Broward County, I don't think Clive's can hold that title anymore. We tried the jerk chicken with mac and cheese and fries, as well as the curried conch with rice and peas and cabbage. We also had a Ting and homemade sorrel. The menu does not have prices, so you have to ask your waitress the cost for each thing you order. However, the prices are reasonable, so you won't go broke if you just wait for the check to show up. The jerk chicken was good, but best with the sauce. Without the sauce, it was a tad dry. The fries (which we settled for because they were out of plantains at lunch time) were crispy and delicious and when I asked the waitress if they added a slight breading before frying she informed me that they came like that, frozen. The rice and peas needed more coconut, but had the perfect "shelly" consistency (as we Jamaicans say---meaning not too sticky). You really can't mess up cabbage. And the curried conch was just right, not too chewy and not tasteless. And there was a lot of it in the meal for $20. The sorrel was supposedly homemade. It was weak, lacking enough ginger and a strong sorrel flavor (as if it was watered down). But as a Jamerican, who not only cooks a lot of Jamaican food but tries all the spots in town, I must say I have go-to places that serve tastier food closer to home in Broward County. However, I cannot find curried conch on any Jamaican menu in Broward, so I may return to have it again and try some other dishes as well. read more

While they have the standard American egg / cheese / bacon offerings, you'd be missing out if you skipped the Jamaican favorites. We had the ackee and salt fish and the callaloo and salt fish. The ackee resembled scrambled eggs in taste and texture and it was seasoned with a little spice. The callaloo was a sturdy green, lightly sauced. Both came with a non-sweet banana, yam and a dumpling. I never met a carb I didn't like, and the dumpling was no exception here. Other breakfast specialties include mackerel, cabbage with salt fish, grits and snapper. Heavy on the breakfast fish, but like I said, if that doesn't float your boat, they have (boring) American breakfast as well. Let's start with the bad. Service was ridiculously slow on the day we went. There was only 1 waitress and the place was packed. One table walked out and said to cancel orders because of how slow, and I saw other tables getting impatient and I felt bad for the poor waitress who was kind and sunny despite everything. I just wish we were told that the wait time was going to be very long before we sat down. After we placed our orders, we waited over an hour to get anything at all - we weren't even given waters during this time and had to flag them down for this. Our food for our table of 5 came out at different times and without utensils which we also had to ask for. The waitress had to ask the kitchen staff multiple times to get our patties. She said this was an unusual day for them and that everything was going wrong so I don't believe the service is usually this bad. Now onto the good (the food!). The jerk chicken was very good, but the Jamaican beef patty was the true star. I could eat like 5 of those instead!! I think they were a bit stingy with the sides, specifically the plaintains (only gave 4-5 pieces). The plantains were very good. Salad was a great size for a side. During coronavirus we went to the walk-up window (inside wasn't open because of CV19). The outside has a very cool paint job and there's a free parking lot. It's very easy to spot and park. You can also just look for the sizable line of Jamaican folks at the window, along with the Cuban doctor guy plus the business casual guy that looks like Mr Rogers. Doc C is mostly a vegetarian--which seems a shame with their amazing jerk chicken and beef patties--but they made him curried vegetables which were terrific even meat-free. My jerk chicken was mouth-watering. Even homemade at Jamaican friends' houses, it has never been this good...drive miles out of your way if you have to, just to taste this. We were out and about for a good while the rest of the afternoon so I also got some Jamaican beef patties and heated them up in a 7-11's microwave later...even reheated they were terrific too! One good thing to know: about 50 feet north there's a Panther Coffee with outside tables.
