A tasty Mediterranean place! They have plenty of outdoor seating with a little sidewalk cafe and picnic tables but unfortunately no outdoor heaters. My friend and I ordered the lentil soup, black iris pitza and lamb & hummus. Everything was delicious and came with lots of homemade pita. We also enjoyed their homemade hot sauce which is not very spicy but a great tomato flavor. I was honestly surprised to see so many negative reviews for this cute Mediterranean spot. One of our friends lives in the neighborhood and comes here often, so she recommended we check it out. It did not disappoint! We came by for an early dinner around 5 with a few friends. It wasn't busy at all, and we were seated right away. My husband and I split the salmon kebabs and the Black Iris pizza. The kebabs were perfectly cooked, well-seasoned, and they gave us a really generous portion of salmon. The pizza was also solid, and our vegetarian friends enjoyed it too. The portions were fairly sizable and my husband and I had to bring some leftovers home. The service was pretty relaxed. They don't check in a ton, but the staff was friendly and helped us quickly whenever we needed something. Have come for both their dinner and brunch menus. The food is decent for dinner but nothing special, their portions are good and they're priced well overall in a cute neighborhood. When the suns out and the weather is nice, I recommend their sidewalk/streetside seats. Brunch time service was more hectic so the service wasn't as attentive but dinner was fine. Made a reservation for 7:15pm the other night. When we arrived there was no table ready and they would have had to break a table apart that a man was already using by himself. We then asked to sit at the bar instead. We thought this place would be more casual than it was. We ordered two items and one cocktail and the total after tip came out to be $85. The food was OK-- all the dips were very ok in the mezze plate and nothing was too special here. The chicken souvlaki was cooked to perfection and extremely juicy. It was served with a TON of rice which we couldn't finish. It came with two sauces one of which was quite spicy and the other was a thin yogurt sauce that was a bit thin. The staff was very friendly! My family and I would go to Black Iris when they were at their old location in Brooklyn. I enjoyed the new location as well! The food was delicious and adequate portions. For appetizers my group ordered a mixed platter. The app came with beets, pita, chick peas etc. It was a great app for 4-5 people to share. We each ordered different dishes: Chicken Souvlaki, Chicken Ouzi, Lamb Sausage (merguez)and Lambajin Pitzaa, and Shish Kebab. The favorite dishes were the Chciken Ouzi and the Lambajin Pitzaa. Both dishes were flavorful and we would order again. The lamb in the Shish Kebab plate was a bit dry. The ambience is nice and the restaurant does get loud if crowded. The service was adequate. Sad to say I did not have a good experience at Black Iris. We arrived a few minutes late of our reservation and the host clearly had an attitude despite the restaurant being nearly empty. We were seated at one of the outside picnic tables and ordered a mezze plate to share. The mezze platter was delicious. I especially loved the seasoned chickpeas and hot fresh flat bread to dip in the hummus. After we received our appetizer, service completely tanked. About an hour later, our waiter informed us that their system had crashed, our order was never received by the kitchen but they are now working on it. He apologized profusely and even offered a dessert on the house. We were busy working on our appetizer so it didn't seem like a big deal. It wasn't until we realized that all the other tables that arrived well after us had received their food and their check that they had completely forgotten us! We had to keep waiving down any waiter that passed by for drink refills. The staff did not seem to be communicating or if they were, it was to argue in front of guests! I ordered the chicken souvlaka which was big enough to share. The grilled chicken was tender and juicy and I really enjoyed the yogurt sauce on the side. Overall everyone in my party loved their dinner. We never received a dessert but they were quick to bring us our check! I may or may not come back to Black Iris the next time I'm in town. read more

Ive order both takeout and dine-in at Black Iris and both are really good. The dine is a lot better imo because the restaurant is very welcoming, the staff are friendly, and the food just looks a lot better on a plate than in takeout containers lol. Not to mention they sometimes have live music. They got seating for about 25 outside and another 30 inside so you probably dont need a dinner reservation or anything. The have pizzas that I honestly didn't expect to see on the menu of a Mediterranean restaurant. However the star has to be the lamb. I had both the lamb chops and the lamb kebabs. I think the kebabs is more meat so if youre looking for your moneys worth get that. Well seasoned with a fresh pita, hummus and small salad; it really hits the spot. Theres also a pomegranate or balsamic glaze drizzled on it and it really takes the lamb to the next level. Id like to try the rest of the menu but I end up getting the lamb every time lol read more

I sat down to eat around 11:15-noonish today. Strike 1: The lamb burger (which is in the brunch menu) was still being prepared and wouldn't be available for about 45 minutes. Strike 2: The bill says, "save 3% by paying in cash." They had no change for cash. Strike 3: One of the waitresses went to the deli to get change, but shorted me (albeit a very small amount of change) but after the other foibles, this food is not worth the headache. I was looking for a spot to have dinner with a friend before our show at BAM and Black Iris is a short 8 minute walk away (according to Google Maps). They take reservations on Resy, but I suspect you'd be fine if you're early enough on a Friday evening. Staff are really nice and friendly and service was pretty quick. We were in and out within an hour, perfect timing for our show. I had the Mezze Plate, which offers your choice of 5 cold mezzes. I had the hummus, babaganoush, labne, stuffed grape leaves, and Black Iris Salad, which is kind of like a Israeli salad. The salad was phenomenal and I really recommend it. The babaganoush was just fine. Grape leaves were also very good. We both had an order of the baklava for dessert. It was a good portion size, but a bit dry. Black Iris is a great restaurant to order delivery from if you're looking for a late night healthy meal. I believe they're open till 11 even on weeknights. Usually we order the chicken kabob and the ground lamb. The chicken is JUST cooked in the center - they really operate on the side of optimism when is comes to the doneness. The chicken is usually barelyyyy pink on the inside. This does lend itself to a very moist and tasty cube of chicken. The ground lamb is also good, very flavorful. We always order with a side of Labne which they mix with some spices and olive. It's a great value for your money and the order always arrives within 30min of ordering. This is a local favorite in our neighborhood. My hubs has been coming here since he was a kid (former location), and introduced it to me in 2015 when we moved to Fort Greene (he grew up in Bed Stuy). The new location is great, it feels a little more off the path and has tons of seating indoor and out. What I love about Black Iris is you can rely on great Mediterranean food - always. The service isn't pretentious, it's neighborly, and it's usually quick. Baby friendly! Dog friendly!
