This isn't my first visit to Black Bear Dinner (BBD), but every time (3) has been great! My first visit, I just moved to the area, Tracy, CA, and the Tracy, BBD was one of my first meals in town. I had the Chicken fried steak, green beans, mashed potatoes w/white gravy, and the bread pudding for desert, which I had to get to go because I couldn't finish half of my meal. Yes, very generous portion size. And the bread pudding reheated, excellent! I also, got a Blackberry Bear Claw to go, which also reheated very well and was delicious! While that's all well and good the main reason I decided to leave the review today...BEAR CLAW FRENCH TOAST!!!! WHAT?! You heard me! Not bad for a breakfast choice. It's ok but it's not over the moon. Don't get me wrong the food is tasty but the prices are a little steep for breakfast. Service staff is pretty good. I've been to other BBD and this one was not the best. As soon as we walked in the Hostess greeted us with RBF! The other hostess sat us at a huge table and smirked while telling us there was no other tables but sat another couple not even 5 min later at the smaller table across from us. Our waiter though was very polite and very quick to take and bring us our food. The food was was ok. The avocado on my plate had started to become black. So I didn't eat it. Everything else was ok. If you like half and half in your coffee watch out! When I was about to put some creamer in my coffee I found that the half and half had completely curdled over! No liquid only solid! I opened 2 more and they were the same way, I spoke to the waitress about it and she said it was frozen? Our check came to over $300. It's the last you will ever see these 18 men and the four we told about our experience. Our food was to die for but I was charged for a cornbread muffin I never received. We were there for Breakfast and the Coffee was great. What happened to Breakfast restaurants and Corned beef hash? Until about 3or 4 years ago corned beef hash was cut up Potato and cut up Corned beef and cooked together THAT is a HASH. Today cut up potato and they were ale Corned beef and tear of some into little shreds and throw that on the grill so they the shredded Corned Beef is now dry as the SONORA Desert and chewy definitely not a hash but a cheap in quality version but not price. read more

I do not know what has happened. My wife and I have been coming to the Black Bear Diner since it opened. Some time around November 2023 we noticed the pancakes were not as good as they used to be. The last time we went in July 2024 the pancakes were very bad. We have stopped going and have been having breakfast at other restaurants. Yesterday, Aug 4 2024. We decided to give BBD another shot. This time, we went to the Turlock location. Results= terrible. My wife pancakes fell apart and crumbled. Mine were not any better. Just like Modesto's BBD. I think who ever orders the pancake mix changed the mix for the worst. Maybe they should try them. We were thinking about trying the Manteca BBD. I think I'll save my money. Hmmm well I was disappointed! Not with the service but with the food! We ordered the Grizz and the big bear breakfast. Both choices were so disgusting! First of the seating set up isn't the best. It also appeared they aren't cleaning tables as people leave. Second the food was gag worthy! They got the order wrong, the bacon was almost raw, the eggs looked snotty and the hash brown potatoes tasted like motor oil smells. We ordered two full dinners for my daughters birthday. The chicken fried steak dinner was okay. The fish and chips dinner was supposed to come with coleslaw and tarter sauce. I did not get either one. The side selected was a baked potato but I got mashed potatoes instead. Also we added the utensils but did not get those either. I don't know why the ordering process required an additional side selection because I really didn't want one but could not complete the order until one was selected. I understand that the pickup dinner is not as good as is usually served inside, but to just leave out items that we paid for is just lazy service. Black Bear needs to get it together. I visited for lunch today, and the restaurant was terribly understaffed, with long wait times. Staff finally (45 minutes) seated me at the bar. Food arrived fairly quickly and was good. I noticed as busy as they were, there were only 3 line cooks. The service was slow. The person checking in people was slow we for waited for 20 minutes and there's not a lot of people waiting . Not enough staff working and the silverware that was given to us was not complete. We waited for our order for over 20 minutes. Our waitress only came to our table once when she took our order. She didn't even check on us and give us an update regarding our orders. After 15 minutes our waitress finally gave us our knives which I asked for when she first took our order. It was a Sunday afternoon when we had to drive from Fresno back to Sacramento. My dad, boyfriend and I decided we were hungry and started looking for a restaurant. Ending up in Modesto, I couldn't believe how hard it was to find a place to eat that wasn't crowded and not a fast food joint. My boyfriend suggested trying out a Black Bear Diner that he had heard about from reading some Yelp reviews. Maybe my android phone is not as smart as I was hoping, because when I searched on Yelp for a nearby Black Bear Diner, the map guide did not give us an indication as to where it was, even though it had to be close to our vicinity. The built in GPS showed us driving along the freeway, but no star or flag letting me know where the diner was. After giving up, we took an exit in hopes of just finding any restaurant. Just as we were about to go to Olive Garden, I looked past them and spotted the Black Bear Diner in the same shopping center! I guess old fashion instincts sometimes are better than the latest electronic gadgets! Lucky for us, the place wasn't crowded at all and upon entering, we were greeted and seated right away by friendly staff. The menus given to us were printed on paper that represented a newspaper. They had an impressive selection of American style food to choose from for every appetite. Joe K ordered a side salad that could have easily been a large dinner salad, along with chicken fried steak, mashed red potatoes and green beans. He enjoyed his meal, but didn't care for the green beans. I had turkey breast with gravy, mashed red potatoes and mixed vegetables. I too enjoyed dinner, but the veggies could have been steamed a little longer. My dad also liked his chicken fried steak dinner, but since they serve a lot of food, he was unable to finish his plate. His choice of cornbread and butter came with dinner. Prices were very reasonable for the generous servings given. We were pleasantly full, and while the dessert menu was definitely tempting, we just couldn't conquer the bear sized portions and I wondered if this is how a bear would feel getting ready to hibernate for winter. Everything is big here in bear country! You can probably bet safely on needing a to-go box right up front. But the real reason I come here is because this is one of the few places where the Chicken fried steak speaks to me. The coating is nice and crispy. And real, tenderized steak. A very nice flavor. 4.5 stars for this. And while I have had better creamed gravy, it is not bad. The potatoes are tasty. My biggest complaint, they tossed in some raw onion and tomato which I had to pick out. Like Charlie O's review, I ordered my eggs over medium. Same problem. The whites were too soft, but I chose not to say anything and just mixed them up with the potato so I could palate them. This particular location also served some suspiciously pre-baked, not homemade biscuits. A major disappointment after have beautiful shortening biscuits at some of the other locations.
