Not my favorite in town, but it has its crowd that they stay loyal to this cafe. Service gets as good as the moment you get in and get greeted and seated. The regulars are treated well, but if you are new here then don't expect the same service. This was our last minute place to stop by because our favorite brunch spot had a long wait. Food was not the greatest. Service was ok. Not horrible. This place is in need of a remodel. The staff is very friendly, but unfortunately we had to constantly look for our waitress to ask for simple coffee refills, water refill, and simple things missing from order. Perko's is an institution. It is a reliable diner experience that feels so comfortable and at home. Prices have gone up, but it's still good service and a good value. Average breakfast. My dad and I settled on eating at Perko's because another local spot had too long of a wait time. The food was just alright. I ordered the Splatter Cakes Combo with sausage and over-medium eggs. The crepe was nice. It was chewy and filled with a delicate vanilla cream. The sausage and eggs were disappointing though. The sausages tasted worse than the ones you can buy frozen at the grocery store. The eggs were very oily. I would say the food was definitely more expensive than it should be for what you get. The portions are pretty small and the food was bland for the price. Our server was not the quickest either. We sat waiting for the bill for an incredibly long time and didn't come to check on us. The restaurant itself is pretty cute though. It has countryesque decor and a diner vibe. I unfortunately don't think I will find myself here again. read more

Entering the restaurant I was greeted by the hostess with a kind smile. After being seated I was met by a bunch of stares from other patrons who looked like I was the first black person they have seen in years. My server who took my order there wasn't much conversation from her. The place was clean and quiet mostly. My food comes out within 10-15 minutes of ordering. I didn't like the fact that I was given the bill within 60 seconds of my food being placed on the table. You can see it next to the biscuits & gravy photo so you know i'm not exaggerating. What if I wanted to order something else? Or what if there was something wrong with my meal? My server never once came to my table to ask me how my food was. I did order the chicken fried steak with eggs and country potatoes with biscuits and gravy. The biscuit was dry and bland and broke apart into many pieces which was not enjoyable. The chicken fried steak was tender and flavorful and the country potatoes tasted just fine. I do wish the onions were more finely chopped in the potatoes. When I went to pay the manger or other male server never made eye contact didn't ask me if I enjoyed my meal. Overall didn't feel like I was too welcome there. Went on a Sunday at around 12.30pm and was immediately seated. The service was friendly and quick. I got my go-to order of egg white omelette with just ham and cooked without butter or oil and a plain toasted English Muffin. My family and I went for breakfast on 4/13/25 at approximately 11:30 am. My daughter n law and I ordered a pancake combo breakfast. We didn't really look over the menu. We assumed they had a pancake combo, so that is what we ordered along with a side of strawberries. The waitress took the order and never told us there wasn't a pancake combo, so when we got our bill everything was priced out individually. It came to $24 for one breakfast and when we asked her why it was priced out like that she said that's the way they do it because there is no combo. If she had told us that when we ordered we would have gotten the big breakfast combo w way more food including pancakes for 15.99. The side of strawberries on the menu said 2.79, but our strawberries were almost $5 each. The waitress barely came to the table. She was preoccupied with a large party, so I asked to speak with the manager and explained the situation to him and told him there was some miscommunication and asked him if he could price match it to the big breakfast combo and he said no because the pancakes were bigger and more expensive and he said that the side of fruit topping on the menu isn't fresh so that's why we were charged more for strawberries. He would absolutely not budge in any way. He said there is a pancake combo, but it's not on the menu. I asked him the price and he said it's priced individually which made no sense. . Don't say there is a combo when there isn't. We explained to him that the waitress should have told us there was no combo and we would have ordered something else, but in the end he didn't care to make it right. We have always loved Perkos in the past and we hadn't been there in a while and this manager clearly doesn't care to make his customers happy. We will not be going back. read more

The food is great, and it's always fresh and amazing. What irks me is the service. Everytime me and my group comes here (we're only a group of three), we get left behind. Today 11/16/24, we sat and waited for our order to be taken for 10 minutes, and had the server who was in our section state at us and not even address us. They were cut and I understand that I was once a server, but you can still acknowledge us and figure out what's going on. I had to go up to the counter and ask what was going on and come to find out our section didn't have a server. That's rough and I went back to my group and let them know. And to top it off they got to the table that was there for the least amount of time before us lol. There is a hierarchy among chain diners. The classification includes IHOP, Waffle House, Denny's, Black Bear Diner, and Perko's. Huckleberry's is owned by the same corporation that brings us Perko's. I have never been to a Huckleberry's. Squeeze In is a fast growing chain with 10 or 12 diners in California and Nevada. IHOP and Waffle House seem to be bigger in the eastern U.S., and they have a fast food with table service feel to them. Generally clean and sterile with dependable but simple menus. All of these places depend on the individual franchise owners and locations. Some are great stand-alone restaurants with nice ambiance and excellent service. Denny's is more likely to be filthy and patrolled by criminals and homeless panhandlers, probably because they are often open 24 hours and located on freeways. I would never eat in a Denny's. It is not safe. Black Bear Diners are a good standard. They are nicer and cleaner than these other brands. Black Bear Diner is always a safe choice. The Squeeze In that I patronize is small and crowded, very loud, expensive, and serves food that is cold. I have a low opinion of Squeeze In, but you will not be bothered by panhandlers and drug dealers at Squeeze In. As for Perko's, I went there because it opened at 6 a.m. and was close by. The other customers seem to have chosen it for the same reasons. If you are traveling and there are no other places open at 6 a.m., Perko's is the place. Same menu as the other diners, but more meat-based. Fewer vegetarian options. Not as nice as Black Bear on the inside, but Perko's is clean and the staff is very pleasant. One star for cleanliness, and one star for nice staff. The coffee at Perko's is good, but they don't offer plain half 'n' half or cream, just the fake creamer in little plastic containers. So I drank it black. Better (stronger) than Black Bear's coffee. The food also included a lot of ingredients out of cans or the freezer. Don't go to Perko's for fresh fruit and veggies. Perko's is not a bad place, but next time I will keep driving and wait for some other diners to open at 7 or 8... read more

I'll be short. If you're looking for ok breakfast food, come to Perkos. The staff was super nice but the food was just ok. The portion size was big. When I say ok, I mean it's a sausage breakfast. Beautifully average. It's got the down-home farm theme going and is looking a titch battered by now. Service is leisurely, but not to the point that you wonder if they've forgotten you. Our food was... medium. My bacon was excellently crispy and gets an A+. Country potatoes or whatever were the undercooked version, with some onion and such thrown in their general direction. Pumpkin-spice pancakes were very enjoyable, since I like thin soft pancakes, and tasting like Duncan Hines spice cake is a plus for me. Presentation was pretty. It's the kind of experience where I'd neither seek it out nor avoid it. It's here; it can make you a pancake if you can figure out how to get into the parking lot. I usually go to the one on McHenry and decided to take my sister out for breakfast on her birthday to the Oakdale rd one since it was closer to her. The food is always great and the portions are huge. Low star rating is due to service from the waiter . Upon arrival we were not even offered drinks she was just rude , never offered any refills on drinks. She only dropped of the check while we were still eating and never came back to see if we needed anything . I had to ask another waitress for more coffee and a to go box and to pay . It was an unpleasant experience, I will not be returning to this location I will stick to my usual McHenry location were staff if friendly and welcoming. read more
