We had a family get together on December 20,2025. The staff was amazing, it felt like we were greeting old friends. Ftom the moment we walked in the door to being seated and them juggling our request for multiple checks the staff was genuinely lovely. The food was wonderful. I had a Denver omelette, it was light and fluffy and cooked perfectly. And on top of that the serving sizes were large. I had a side of home fries with peppers and onions, and a biscuit (It came with sausage gravy if I wanted, but I wanted to just have it as a biscuit so I had them leave off the gravy). My daughters had soup and a sandwich, dad had pancakes, and my other daughter had eggs Benedict, and my mom got a club sandwich, I can't remember what others had but everyone raved about their food. The restaurant was decorated for Christmas and is just adorable. The diner has comfortable booths and a counter that wraps around a good part of the main room. There is also a side room ( where they seated us 11 altogether) where larger parties are accommodated. The service was pretty quick once we all ordered, maybe 10-15 min. The prices were very reasonable, my Denver omelette that I could only eat half of and the home fries and huge fluffy biscuit was about $15. I took the other half home and my hubby ate it later Definitely will go back, I live here in town which makes that easy but even if I was passing through I would go the 2 blocks or so off hwy 99 to eat here. You know it's one of those places that you drive by and you say I wonder what that's like. In the early morning it's busy midday not sure and I think it's probably closed at night. So we decided to do a Saturday morning breakfast. Walk in the door it's like walking back into the 60s maybe with a great U-shaped lunch counter. Then we sat in the back and our waitress was excellent. Even got to share some photos of grandkids and she talked about town. Just a great experience. Had oatmeal and a sausage enchilada for breakfast. Both were Great. Now we are recommended it to other people and we've been back at least three more times different days of the week equally as friendly food was equally as good. I don't think this is a sleeper because it's been around many years according to what I've been told. I'd read it a big 10 out of 10. read more

This quiet quaint little restaurant is so cute inside and very humble nothing crazy but it gives a "at home" feel. The servers are so sweet. Old Mill Cafe is assuredly a gem of Modesto, as far as breakfast spots go. For me personally, it's a little out of the way and a little dated inside--you can see the remnants of days-gone-by with the formerly-smoking-section architecture in place, and yeah, the menus are a little sticky and worn with some spelling errors sprinkled in--but who gives a darn when the food and service is absolutely excellent?! The first thing to endear me? The excellent size of the coffee cups! I hate when you go to a breakfast place and the mugs are tiny, which is the standard fare for most of these sorts of places. Not at Old Mill. They're nice big mugs and they hold a respectable amount of coffee! Like what you'd have at home! Other standouts were the Chicken Fried Steak (it didn't need a knife at all) and have y'all heard of their Chile Verde Pork Omelette?! Apparently it's been written up in the local paper AND DESERVEDLY SO! It literally melts right on your tongue. Absolutely stunning! I don't go out for breakfast often but I'm coming back right quick for that omelette! Lastly, the service was amazing! Our waitress was attentive and friendly, all of the waitstaff were really, and the food came out quickly without sacrificing flavor or quality! I do wish my hash browns were crispier though. My husband and I decided to stop in for breakfast for the 1st time and I'm so glad we did! This place feels like home away from home. We were greeted so warmly and seated right away. I ordered the pancake breakfast with 3 huge, fluffy pancakes, eggs and the best sausages I've ever had out. My hubby ordered very crispy hash browns, bacon and eggs. Today's experience was disappointing. The apple juice tasted very watered down and lacked flavor. The service also felt uncomfortable there were small comments being made that came across as suspicious and could potentially offend someone. Another tasty breakfast spot! It was my first timecard trying trying out this little place in downtown Modesto. I've passed it many times and I think it's an old restaurant. My friend said it was at another location actually in an old windmill. Tasty omlette and country fried potatoes. And yummy fresh light fluffy biscuits and tasty gravy. I didn't notice sausage so good for me. A bit of an older crowd and apparently some regulars. Waitresses seemed friendly. I would just liked to have had an option of flavored creamers for my coffee. Stopped in here for the first time in about 25 years. This place has been around for decades and is always open. All I can say is the portions are huuuuuge! I've never seen a plate of food so large. I had the chicken and waffles. Crispy and I was stuffed. The server just happens to be a former server from one of my other favorite breakfast spots in another town. The coffee was watered down and lacking. I order the old fashioned breakfast New York strip, and with country potatoes and toast. The only thing edible were the eggs and toast. The country potatoes were cold by the time they got to the table and the New York steak was improperly cooked. In the photo you can see that the meat is gray, which means they put it in an under heated pan or griddle to cook it in this day and age. We are paying far too much money on dining out for it to not be perfect. Don't waste your money cook at home. read more

This was our first time here because we just moved to Modesto. When we got out of the car, two women were getting into their car talking about how wonderful it was. That was a nice introduction. When we came into the restaurant, my husband is very particular about where he sits, and he was given his choice of seating which really helps us out. We love the menu we love waffles. They use real butter and they have half orders of food, which I really appreciate cause I can never finish a whole order. We pulled up, walked in and were seated and got coffee immediately. And BIG coffee mugs, thank you! We perused the menu, I settled on pancake, sausage and scrambled egg. My wife asked about their "famous" Chile Verde omlette, after the waitress grabbed her a sample before ordering, she informed us she buys the Chile Verde by the container load for use at home! Breakfast arrived pretty quickly, and was a HUGE amount of food. Coffee was constantly topped up and always fresh tasting. We got to-go containers and paid and left. Another great breakfast at the Old Mill. This morning, I suggested that I take my wife to breakfast before work as we move into February (St. Valentines Day is coming and I think it's a bit classier to do several little things spread out rather then one evening only.)
