The service was quick and our wait time for food was about 10 minutes. We got country potatoes, over easy eggs, bacon, sausage, and French toast in our meal. The potatoes were drenched in grease and very salty. We ordered an additional set of country potatoes and those were raw, hard, and bland. It's my first time in a Black Bear and I love it. I love it that the menu is a newspaper. I love it that they have a merch store. I love it that they kept their theme of bears - lots and lots of bears. There's even a bear claw donut in the pastry case. Received 2/3 meals I ordered through Door Dash & the meals I did receive both came with 1/2 sides...ridiculous. I only ever have issues with my order during dinner time, like cold fries or dry sandwiches, but I usually take it to the head and fix it myself because we're only human we make mistakes. Missing a whole meal though?? On top of that, NONE of the meals received even being complete is beyond me. Whoever works during breakfast & lunch does a great job, I never have complaints. I feel like the service has not changed. They have always been friendly and welcoming. This time around, we came on a Sunday night. It was after a softball game, so we came in a group of 9, with 3 joining us after. We were sat within 5 minutes of getting there. We got two half booths where the kids were next to us but not with us--thank God. They got to have their time, and the adults had our time. The server was quick and friendly, got all our drink orders and kids' meals entered within the first 5 minutes of sitting. Once she brought the drinks for all of us, the adults entered our orders. I was so busy talking, so I'm not sure how quickly the food came for the kids--but quickly enough to not bother us. My kids both got the grilled cheese sandwich with fries. Definitely enough for my 6-year-old, but my 10-year-old needed more food. That was our fault--he's a big kid. We ordered an extra side of fries when he was done with his meal. I ordered the Crispy Chicken Cobb Salad. Immediately, I knew it would fill me up. I wanted something light on calories but heavy enough to fill me up for the night. This was the perfect choice. I see now why this Black Bear gets so low ratings. While it appears to be popular, with lines out the door, service is extremely slow. We waited almost 25 minutes from the waiter taking our order, to food being delivered to us at our table, and 7 minutes from being seated. No water offered. I got a coffee and it was empty most of the time. The other thing that was most annoying was that we got a very small booth with a small table, and our salad came out right with our primary food so that there was no space left. I have no idea why the salad did not come right away and took 25 minutes for some lettuce and stuff to be put on a plate. Other places space things out so that if there is a long wait at least the customer is entertained with some appetizer. We saw our waiter a total of 4 times over the 1+ hour we were there. And there were errors with our order that due to the long wait to even get the food we decided to just not have fixed. They missed extra busy as well as we wanted another item, but also given the wait and the lack of seeing anyone that really cared, we skipped. The restaurant seems newer than the one I. Fremont, but service is not what I expected. We will be avoiding this one from now on unless given a reason to try it again. From my past experiences, the food and services are always good. The only problem was our experience with this server named "Darla". From previous orders we were able to get our cheese of choice when ordering a burger but she said no to ours and you can't do this/that on other orders that we were able to make customizations/selections in multiple past visits. The Black Bear Diner in Hayward on Hesperian appears, to all intents and purposes, to be your standard Black Bear Diner. This one happens to be open 24 hours and, open on Christmas Day. To begin with, they were busy, but not overly so, and I was seated in under ten minutes. All the wait staff were decked out in Christmas-y sweaters, which gave things a festive air. My waitress, Jazmin, was possibly the best waitress I've encountered in I don't know when. She was friendly, attentive and beyond helpful. The Christmas specials, like the Thanksgiving ones, were turkey, ham or prime rib, with all the trimmings. I opted for prime rib this go-round, requesting it as rare as I could get it, attempting to avoid the dreaded well-done version. I opted for salad rather than soup. The salad is nice. As with most things Black Bear, it was large, with a good assortment of carrot shreds, cucumber slices and cherry tomatoes. Choice of dressing. Mid-salad, my entrée arrived, unfortunately, on its way to medium well, but I figured what the heck. Prime rib is often a crap shoot anyway. Jazmin appeared almost immediately, asking if things were okay. I did point out that the meat was definitely not rare. She said that with prime rib, it's almost always medium rare, to which I pointed out that this was well on its way to well done, but it looked edible, so I wasn't going quibble. She immediately offered to have it remade (Goodness!). Asking if she wouldn't mind, she whisked my plate away, while I went back to work on my salad. Within about 10 minutes, one of the kitchen workers came out with my new plate, explaining apologetically that it was as pink as he could get. It was darned near perfect, and I told him so. Jazmin came by shortly thereafter as well to double check, and bring me the corn muffin. Speaking of corn muffins, they can be so disappointing, but not this one. Still warm, soft, sweet and delicious. What Black Bear Diner is generally known for is down home American food and lots of it. My Christmas dinner consisted of salad (or soup), a decent piece of prime rib (or turkey or ham), mashed red-skinned potatoes with gravy, cornbread stuffing, green beans, a corn muffin and a slice of pumpkin pie. Including a soft drink, the total came to $40.00, pretty decent for a Christmas meal. Breakfasts there are also huge, as are their desserts. I had my pie packed to go and will snack on it later. What truly impressed me was the willingness to make sure that everything was to my liking, including the offer to remake the plate. I never ask for that, but took them up on the offer.
