I really do not have anything to complain about. Our party of 4 was seated right away when we went in for a late lunch / early dinner (400pm). The place is really cute with bears all over the place. The wait staff is VERY friendly and down to earth. Looking around I noticed the crowd was a bit on the older side. The menu is a fake newspaper (CREATIVE). Waiter took our drink orders and brought them out right away. They have Arnold Palmers (half lemonade and half iced tea) which I was so excited to see! =) PLUS! They serve breakfast all day so this is the place to go when you have a craving for pancakes--which I ordered. The black bear breakfast comes with 2 pancakes (or french toast or belgian waffle), 2 sausages (or 2 bacon strips, 1 piece of ham) and 2 eggs. So much food for 8 bucks! The portions are freaking huge! And the prices are definitely reasonable for portions that generous. The food was quite delicious. Don't expect anything to knock your socks off but it's definitely yummy. Went here tonight with my boyfriend, and had the best chicken pot pie of my life. The crust was perfectly golden brown and flaky, and the filling was wonderful. Lots of chicken and vegetables, nothing over cooked. It was perfect. My boyfriend got the rib and tri-tip combo. The ribs were fall off the bone perfect and the tri-tip was tender and juicy. Both had a nice smokey flavor, and were perfectly cooked. Our wait staff was attentive and smiling, I really have no complaints! The prices and portions were more than reasonable too. Coziest cutest diner ever! And the portions are huge! I'm a huge fan of bears and I'm actually planning to research them in the not too distant future! I have never been to one of these franchises and once I walked in, I'm now a fan! I came here for breakfast and our waitress was extremely friendly and nice. I got an egg dish and that proved enough for me, but next time I'm thinking about getting the bear plate. The ambience is really humble. The music is like the soundtrack to Disneyland's Grizzly Peak and Redwoods Creek. It definitely reminded me of home. Their biscuits are H-U-G-E! We waited for about 40 minutes to be seated, because Black Bear Diners are usually really worth the wait. When we were seated, we noticed many open tables and wondered why it took us so long to get a table, when we meet our server, we started to understand. This would rank in the top 3 worst service experiences I've ever had. I understand what it's like to be short staffed, but this was ridiculous! Our food was mediocre and the children were served quite a bit after my girlfriend and I had our food. So it turns out that we were visiting the Davis Black Bear Diner because we had eaten at the one in Woodland and were so terribly disappointed that the corporate office sent us a voucher to use at another Diner. Thus we went to the Davis restaurant to dine and celebrate my wife's birthday. This place is great! 1000% better than the Woodland diner. Everyone was friendly and outgoing. The food came reasonably quickly and the portions were fantasmic! I ordered the chicken fried steak dinner and the steak was not the little prepared and then microwaved patty. It was freshly prepared, cooked and huge! The gravy was rich and tasty. The side vegetables, soup and side salad were also way better than you might expect. We both ordered dessert and they were so big we had to get them to go because we were so full we couldn't eat a bit more (we even took some home in a box.) So did we like it? We loved it! A pretty decent diner with decent food. Well, I cam here with my wife for some hot food and there was pretty decent tasting "comfort food." I ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and soup, and my wife ordered one the Benedicts, can't remember which one. In terms of the visuals, my friend chicken was a bit overcooked to the point where the breading was a little too dry and a bit black from being a bit burned; the soup was so dried out that the consistency looked so thick and starchy. In terms of taste, just as I had expected the soup had probably been sitting on the stove for the whole day and had a slightly burnt taste. I'm assuming the soup got burned on the bottom and dried out the soup and giving off the burnt taste. Overall, the chicken was a bit dry and the breading a bit too crispy for my liking, but the mashed potatoes with the gravy kind of reminded me of the food my dad used to make. Although it wasn't the best tasting food, it was just nice to have a nice hot meal that kinda "stuck to my ribs" as my dad used to say, haha. It was really homey and kinda got a little emotional just because I haven't had any "home cooked food" in over 10 years as both my parents have passed. Anyway, moving on, my wife's poached eggs were so overcooked that after cutting into the eggs the yolk kinda broke in half and almost rolled off the plate because it was so overcooked. That being said, the food's taste was pretty decent and it's just simple but pretty decent diner food. I definitely wasn't disappointed as I had no expectations going it. April 4th ,2022 : The waiter was rude and disrespectful, we were the last people left in the restaurant and he brought us the bill telling us to hurry because we have to leave although we weren't done eating .My dad was not happy with the service at all so we decided to leave and pay but we left no tip because the waiter was rude plus it's not REQUIRED . Tips are not required especially if you are being kicked out mid way through your meal. ..After my dad went to go pay we grabbed our stuff and as we left my dad went to go use the restroom to wash his hands. When my dad came out the restroom he told the waiter " Thank you have a goodnight ". The waiter noticed he left no tip and told my dad to leave and never come back and my dad told him " excuse me what did you say " and he yelled at my dad to leave and get the F*ck out . My Dad told him he didn't deserve a tip for being rude and he's a paying customer and The waiter called him and our family " cheap pathetic assholes" who couldn't afford food . Personally as Latinos we felt like this exchange of words and the way we were treated was based on our skin color and language for speaking spanish . I do not recommend anyone coming here especially if you're latino , I felt discriminated and attacked and uncomfortable for being who we are . At the end of the day me and my family are paying customers who do always tip but didn't feel a man who was racist towards us deserved it . He even attacked me ( A Uc Davis college student ) calling me a dumbass and stupid college student . He even said to my dad he didn't care about losing his job and wanted to get physical.
