My friend had a very nice dinner here for Restaurant Week recently, so she suggested I try it out. I came by for a weekday lunch; my reservation was at 1pm, but when I arrived, the restaurant was mostly empty and I was seated immediately. I ordered from the prix fixe menu - a french onion soup to start and the "French Burger" for my main. The soup was quite delicious - very generous serving size, and the croque monsieur in the soup (in lieu of what might have otherwise been some croutons, etc.) was a very creative and fun touch. The burger, however, was slightly more disappointing. Nothing was particularly bad, of course, but neither was anything particularly good. The patty tasted pretty average - not overcooked but somewhat lacking in flavour that was not overpowered by the heavy amount of sauce and cheese, and the pate I felt clashed a bit with the rest of the burger. Bun was quite tasty, and the fries were actually the highlight, I think - loved the seasoning. Service was a bit slow, especially given how empty it was - from when I was seated to got my entree was over 45 minutes (and I promise this is not because I ate my soup slowly or something). Overall, an average experience. It was a bit pricey for the quality of my meal, but I would be keen to come back and try something else on the menu. read more

My party of two stopped in here with a 6:30pm reservation on a Saturday night. The restaurant is located on a posh street near many upscale shops, hotels, etc. The exterior is unassuming and reminiscent of a classic French bistro, and the interior is dark and romantic, with a buzzy atmosphere. Upon arrival, the hostess warmly greeted us in French, and we were promptly seated at a cozy table in the middle of the restaurant. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable, and informed us of the nightly specials - we started the night with the Chioggia and Baby Yellow Beet Salad ($17.95), with artisanal goat cheese, sunflower seeds, roasted hazelnuts, and a praline vinaigrette. I usually wouldn't shell out that much on a salad with no protein in it, but this dish was absolutely divine - the clean, earthy flavor and buttery texture of the beets contrasted beautifully with the rich sharpness of the goat cheese, and the crunch of the sunflower seeds and roasted hazelnuts added another dimension to the dish. Additionally, the praline vinaigrette didn't taste much like praline to me, but was more like the best balsamic reduction I've ever had, with a deep sweetness and a bright acid tone. For entrees, I ordered the Butcher's Cut of the Day, which was a lamb shank with ratatouille vegetables ($37.95). The lamb shank was decadent and fall-off-the-bone tender - I didn't even need to use a knife. The dish's sauce was savory in a way that complemented the richness of the lamb (which can sometimes get overpowering), keeping me coming back for more. The lamb shank definitely looks large, but I was a bit disappointed upon discovering that most of the portion consisted of the large shank bone. The ratatouille vegetables were another highlight - you could taste each individual type of vegetable (but especially the olives), but they all paired together for a really nice medley of tastes and textures! My companion ordered the Roasted Amish Chicken/"Coq au Vin" ($27.95) with seasonal mushrooms, roasted fingerling potatoes, and caramelized onion. Oh my goodness, I don't know how Bistronomic makes this dish, but it's amazing - the chicken is juicy and succulent (even the white meat), and whatever sauce/reduction that they've paired it with is off the hook - it's like the best Thanksgiving gravy you've ever had, especially when complemented by the sweetness of the caramelized onions (that have definitely lovingly been cooked for hours). The potatoes are cooked to a perfect al dente, and the mushrooms were earthy and have a depth of flavor that is virtually unparalleled. And for serving almost a whole half chicken (breast, thigh, and drumstick), this is a generous portion at an amazing price (especially for an upscale French restaurant in its location). The portions were what my dad calls "Chicago-sized portions" - we left the restaurant full and happy (we were too stuffed to look at the dessert menu, though we would definitely return and try their desserts another time!). Everything was relatively affordable, service was attentive and warm, and the food was some of the best we've had in Chicago - I'd definitely recommend Bistronomic for anyone looking for a lovely dinner out with friends and/or family! read more

This was a fancy little french restaurant, and the ambiance was very nice. The waiter was very nice, but he did feel a bit too formal at times. We came for brunch, got the salmon avocado toast, chicken crepes, and omelettes. the salmon on the avocado toast was really refreshing, but the omelettes fell a bit flat. I had brunch here this morning with four other people, and every plate was incredible. 4 of us got brunch specials, and I have a special shoutout to the confit duck leg on their incredible French toast with some sort of orange syrup that was truly incredible. The duck was tender and flavorful and the French toast was thick and custardy and the fruit was fresh and beautifully prepared. But everything was amazing. It was booked solid and most diners lingered after finishing their meal, so we had to wait a bit. The bar is small but intimate and cozy, with a beautiful young French woman tending. The entrees were delicious and fairly priced for the quality. The drinks were a bit too expensive, but that is the new norm, I'm afraid, post-pandemic. Great small French bistro in the heart of Chicago Gold Coast. Restaurant was not packed for brunch but I would recommend making reservations since the dinning room is small and can quickly fill up. We came here for brunch. The egg Benedict dish was good but the egg was not runny at all. The other dish I tried was toast avocado. Great breakfast sandwich but for whatever reason it came under a mountain of arugula. The arugula has completely overpowered the dish and I had to dig thru arugula to find all the pieces of the avocado toast. The bottomless mimosas are a must but keep in mind that they only serve mimosas during lunch with hard stop at 2:30pm. They don't leave a pitcher at the table and only refill your glass on request. Service was ok. The bus boys and back servers were more helpful and more polite than the waiters. read more

I came here during restaurant week on the recommendation of a friend. It was a Wednesday night and the place was packed and buzzing. The first course I had was the chioggia and yellow beet salad and it was fantastic. I've never had a salad quite like that before and it has piqued my interest in similar dishes. The second course was the beef bourguignon. Considering this is a staple of French cuisine, and the fact I've never had it before, I was looking forward to this dish. It was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. The price for the restaurant week dinner menu was $42.00 and the price for the beef bourguignon on its own is usually $37.00. In my opinion, that is way too expensive. I don't know if I would even pay $27.00 for it. I do realize the preparation of it is complicated, but still. The third course was the griotte cherry diplomate and it was fantastic! It was legitimately one of the best desserts I have ever had and the highlight of the meal. It reminded me of a bread pudding/panna cotta hybrid. Two desserts I love on their own. Overall, it was a solid meal that I enjoyed. The beef bourguignon was a tad underwhelming and way too expensive on its own. I am more than open to coming back here for brunch, though. read more

I went to bistronomic with some friends for a birthday brunch and this was a great place with bottomless mimosas. I ordered the mushroom omelet and substituted the mushroom with tomatoes and cheese, which I highly recommend. We also all ordered bottomless mimosas and this brunch place offered quick service and perfectly made mimosas for a great price. It was only around $22 for the mimosas and they required an entree with the purchase. The inside of this place was really nice as it gave a French feel. The only issue here we had was that with our food there was no hot sauce or any other sauce other than ketchup. The spice level here was a bit subpar, but overall great food. The options were also extremely limited for vegetarians during breakfast time which was not good, but fortunately, the omelet was pretty good. I would highly recommend this restaurant for brunch and lunch, but for vegetarians be weary as the options are very slim. read more

This is the last restaurant I visited during my trip to Chicago and I can comfortably say the flavors did not disappoint. First I tried the "Le Canard Aux Fruits" Roasted Duck Breast. I asked for it cooked medium rare. I was a little hesitant to try this dish because I wasn't too excited about the sides of fruit but I love duck. To my surprise, the fruit was cooked in a way that made it taste lightly savory. The combination with the perfectly cooked duck breast was amazing. Next I tried the Fish of the Day (salmon). This was the best salmon I've ever had. There was a subtle hint of truffle that did not overpower the flavor of the fish. It combined well with the green beans and mashed potatoes. What did disappoint was how small the piece of salmon was. It was only about 4 or 5 bites of salmon. I also had the Housemade Linguini. This was the most filling dish I tried off the menu. It was perfectly coated in a truffle sauce which was not overpowering at all. The chef here clearly knows how to work with truffle flavors. I ended off my dinner with the cheesecake. I'm not the biggest dessert person, but I did enjoy the small portion of sweets. Again, this isn't a full slice, but given how sweet the cake is, I think the small portion is just enough for one person. As for service and ambiance. Our waitress and host were very warm and welcoming. I appreciated the chef coming out to ask us how we liked our meal. I could tell he was invested in his work, and I appreciated that. The restaurant had a classic clean look. Overall, I was fairly pleased with my experience. I give the flavors of all the dishes 5 stars, but given the portions, I'm offering a 4 star rating overall. read more

This is a cute spot and our young sweet server Mateo was nice. We were seated on the sidewalk patio brunch which was very nice and spaced well for people watching. Bistronomic is a long standing member of the Chicago Restaurant scene, and possibly one of the oldest, after the closings of La Sardine, Kiki's Bistro, and Everest in the past 12-18 months. As a result of those closings I have been visiting more often, much to my delight. I only wish I had not stayed way for so long. First, Bistronomic is an excellent choice for brunch. All the entrees are superb, including the Club and the Croques, although I am partial to the Eggs Benedict. They make an excellent Kir Royale and the Kentucky Cousin is a lovely lighter bodied whiskey cocktail perfect for a day drinking extravaganza. If you are a sailor recently docked at Navy Pier, the bottomless mimosas can cure your scurvy. Additionally, they do take reservations, which is unusual in Chicago's brunch scene (although COVID may have altered that dynamic). Dinner is equally good. Standard Bistro selections on the regular menu - I am partial to the escargot and the crispy leg of duck confit. In addition, they have regular wine dinner menu options, and I strongly recommend attending them. In the fall we attended the Burgundy wine dinner and it was astounding. Finally, make sure to save room for dessert - the chocolate hazelnut bars are rich and decadent, with an opulence of which Kit Kat bars can only dream. read more

The restaurant week menu was a nice offering, there were multiple things I wanted to try in each category. We opted to add the house specialty grilled cheese app but what was great is that the waiter warned us that one order for the table of three would be plenty and he was right! The apps were delicious- the quinoa salad had golden beets and a delicious vinaigrette. The butternut squash soup of the day was creamy and rich but not too much. The mains were a huge hit. The duck cassoulet was lovely, not too oily or fatty which duck can sometimes be and sort of more deconstructed than the typical cassoulet but very delicious. The other main we tried was a tender beef with gnocchi and root vegetables. That was the biggest hit of the night, the meat was melt in your mouth incredible!! Dessert was great. We tried the special which was baked Alaska, then an apple crumble type and a chocolate ganache. All incredible. Very light which was good after the richness of dinner. Cocktails were solid, the wine selection as well. The atmosphere is cozy to romantic. Would be a great spot for a date or small group, probably not great for kids. Will definitely be coming back to try the rest of the menu. Also looks like there is outdoor seating when it's not snowing in January so another reason to return. read more

Bistronomic is celebrating its 13th anniversary and there's a good reason why it's lasted so long in the fickle restaurant world in Chicago. The restaurant is small but very cosy. There is extra seating outside and even in a Chicago winter, the covered and heated outside area is more than acceptable and actually quieter than the inside of the restaurant. The food is authentically French from their signature Baked Mont D'or cheese to their mouthwatering beef bourguignon. Everything on the menu is cooked to perfection. Their wine menu is pretty extensive and offers a wide range of options at varying prices. Cocktails are very well done too. Don't forget to order their cheese plates where you will find hard to find reblochon! Service is outstanding from the moment you walk in. Staff really go out of their way to make sure that your every need is met. This restaurant is fast becoming a favorite and I don't wait till I go back. read more

Anchovies were a tasty touch on the salad. The chicken in the Coq au vin was almost perfect tender, including white meat. It's sauce was too rich for me. I get French chefs love butter but too much. The Beef Bourguignon was all around delicious. Beef was very fall apart tender. Sauce was flavorful but not too salty or rich. For the prices they charge, need more potatoes and mushrooms on the Coq au vin and noodles on the Beef Bourguignon. Desserts were decent, nothing amazing or interesting. Service was good. We decided to come here for lunch. We were the only ones theres and received really good service. They were very welcoming and the food came out in a timely manner. The patio was well covered and comfortable. My wife ordered their linguini pasta. It came with mushrooms, confit of peppers and tomatoes. This dish was very flavorful. And the capriole farm goat cheese was a nice touch. I ordered their "Croque Monsieur sandwich. My dish came with these perfectly cooked fries. They we crispy and delicious. My sandwich was simple but also very tasty. It's basically a ham and cheese sandwich with cheese melted on top of the bread and nornay sauce. I'd probably want to try a couple of other French restaurants before returning, but I wouldn't rule them out. read more

How can you not love this place. Charming smallish neighborhood French restaurant that serves high quality cuisine at very reasonable prices. The hostess is charming,waitstaff are efficient and the chef makes sure you're happy.So when we are in town this is a must. Let's talk about the food. Onion soup is delicious. It didn't quite work for me (hard to cut a piece of ham in a cup of soup). Loved the flavor of the soup though. And warm delicious bread is also brought to the table (and was used to soak up every drop of the soup!) For entrees, I had the duck confit "Crispy House Cured Duck Confit - Apricot Purée | Shaved Fennel | Frisee Salad | Yukon Potato Chips | Preserved Lemon Vinaigrette" It was okay. I liked the lemon flavor a lot, but the dish just didn't win me over like I had hoped. I didn't even finish the duck. Husband had their infamous burger special, and it was indeed incredible. I loved the flavors, especially the little kick with the pate. Husband hates pate but didn't pick up on that taste so yay for him. ;) Fries were served without truffle as requested, but instead didn't have any salt so that was disappointing. Got the lemon meringue to go, and it was ok but not spectacular. Overall, a decent meal but not one that I'd rush to repeat since there are so many great restaurants nearby! read more

We went to Bistronomic for Saturday brunch. We were greeted at the door by staff with authentic French accents, and I loved that there were French waiters employed there to match the theme. The interior made me feel like I was in a cafe in Paris. Our first course was a celery root velouté, something I was a little unsure about when I ordered it because I had never tried it before and was confused by the description, but it was just a soup and ended up being delicious. The celery undertones were refreshing and the Parmesan on top added a savory touch. For our entrees, we ordered the French toast and the croque monsieur with fries. The toast was moist and had a unique orange flavor. While the croque monsieur was ultra cheesy and they did not skimp on the ham, the sandwich was very heavy and quite a large portion for brunch. However, its extreme savoriness and size contrasted quite well with the dessert. Dessert was a chocolate hazelnut bar. Though tiny, the bar was the perfect end to the meal because of its intense chocolate notes and the lingering nutty aftertaste. I don't think I would have been able to enjoy anything larger after my huge entree, so it tied up the brunch really well.
