I finally made it back to Somerset during this visit to Chicago! It didn't disappoint! I was with a family member and we decided to share all of the plates. We started with the Potato Leek soup. It was a great starter on a cold Chicago day. It had a very smooth and creamy texture, and was garnished with labneh and leek oil. Next up was the Salt Roasted Beets. Salt-roasting beets supposedly increases the moistness and sweetness of the beets. This dish was excellent. The beets were delicious and combined with the salad, whipped ricotta and a layer of crushed pistachios, it was an amazing side dish. Our main course, the Falafel sandwich and the Crispy Brussels Sprouts came together. We shared both, and to be honest, slicing the sandwich in half was a challenge, but we successfully managed to cut it. The falafels were accompanied with hummus and tzatziki. The falafels were crispy on the outside, with a savory chickpea flavor, and light and fluffy inside. The Brussels Sprouts were tender and soft, with a delectable glaze that made them irresistible. Adjacent to Viceroy Hotel; great location. Somerset is pretty inside. Fully stocked bar. I ate here three times over the course of four days. Crystal was nice on Friday. Back on a Sunday; sat way in the back room, near kitchen. That one server, whose name I forgot was bad. She just seemed like she was on a different field. So distracted. So slow. She was not good. I asked for a cup of regular coffee and she said they ran out. I said: how? She said: we just did. She offered me something else. I talked to a manger who seemed baffled and went in the back and made another fresh pot of coffee. The previous Friday ; I was served cold coffee instead of hot. I was told: "we gave you the leftovers in the last pot." I said "why?" Oh because it's the last pot. They went back there and made another fresh pot. I don't know what the real deal here is but this left a bad impression. Yes, the cheese and spinach omelette was good. The chocolate croissant so tasty. I tried their calamari and it didn't disappoint. Turkey club on point. Burger was okay. Would I come back just to eat? NO. Fix your internal coffee issues and don't let your patrons drink old and / or cold coffee they didn't ask for. Better yet; never deny a coffee drinker a good solid cup of coffee. A little Fever Tree pop up where they offered samples of their zero-proof beverages with Instagram ready backdrops and a DJ pumping some Halloween music jams in the courtyard. This was very impromptu and very cute! When I picture summer in Chicago, this is exactly what I had in mind: a vibrant night out with great food and the perfect atmosphere. I dined at Somerset in the Viceroy Hotel on a Friday night in June, and the food was so delicious that I went home and recreated them myself. My partner and I started with burrata, styled with almond pesto, apple butter, frisée, and fig balsamic vinaigrette, served with focaccia--a dish I had never tried before but will absolutely have again. Then came the Piri Piri Chicken Kebab with cilantro and yogurt, which was tender and flavorful, and my partner opted for the Mediterranean sea bass. He offered me a bite, and let me tell you, those two bites (wink) were enough to make me fall in love with the dish--so much so, I had to also try making it myself! We were offered indoor or outdoor seating, and since it was a perfect night, we chose to sit outside. However, the seating arrangement felt a bit off. The server initially tried to seat us right next to the only other party dining outdoors, within arm's reach and certainly sound reach--despite the fact there were a dozen tables available. We moved two tables down, which helped, but it did leave a bit of an off-putting start to an otherwise amazing experience. I could have heard the conversation of the other party had I wanted to and vice versa. A little more attention to client experience and seating arrangements would go a long way. The atmosphere was upscale yet relaxed. If you're looking for a true taste of summer in the city, Somerset is where you want to be. I'd return! read more

We went here for brunch to celebrate birthdays! The host was so sweet and went above beyond for our group. He took so many photos for us lol I wasnt to impressed with the menu, it's pretty basic. However the calamari was really good and the chicken&waffles was 10/10. They brought us a slice of cake of our birthdays, which was really sweet. But I do not think I would be excited to return. First off, the location is in a very busy area, so parking can be tricky--you might have to valet. We had a reservation for a party of 9, and while I understand policies about seating incomplete parties, the restaurant was not busy at all and had plenty of open tables, yet they still refused to seat us until most of our group arrived. That was frustrating, especially given how empty the place was. On the food side, it was a mixed bag. The Brussels sprouts were absolutely delicious, easily the highlight of the meal. The cinnamon roll, unfortunately, was super dry, and the shakshuka was way too sour--it really needed more herbs to balance the flavors. The burger was pretty standard, but the salted bun was a nice touch. Came here for dinner and drinks and really liked it! Thought the service and ambience were great. The weather was beautiful so got to sit outside, but the inside looked very nice too. For drinks I had the ciao-biscus and tajinarito. Both were great, albeit a little diluted. For food we tried the crispy pretzel calamari, herb crusted salmon, and baba ganoush. Normally, we don't look to eat at restaurants in hotels. However, looking at the reviews of Somerset and their menu made us ignore that thought. The inside dining room of the Somerset is very nice and has a nice bar with a TV. The outdoor seating is exceptional, and being a nice day outside made us land there. Our wait person, Liz, quickly greeted us and brought menus and water to us. We ordered a couple of nice cocktails, the Peachy Clean and the Spice is Right. They both were very tasty. The Burrata with strawberry compote sounded terrific. We also decided to split the Prix Fixe Menu for lunch. Our first course was butternut squash soup. It was quite thick with pepitas in it. It was extraordinarily delicious, some of the best we've ever had. The Burrata was accompanied with perfectly cooked ciabatta and was a fantastic dish for the table. Our second course was the herb crusted salmon with lentils and white asparagus in a yummy berbere sauce. The salmon was cooked exactly per our request. We will definitely get this unique salmon dish again! Our dessert was very good key lime cheesecake with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. The restaurant was getting quite busy. All of the staff, including Trish, the manager, was helping everyone else out. Adam, the bartender, came to tell us they were out of the red wine I had ordered. What was really sharp was that he brought a sample of a similar wine that he thought I would like instead. Besides being very friendly, our wait person, Liz, was helpful informing us about different menu items. Overall, our experience at Somerset was one of the best we've had in a long time. The food was good... the key lime cheesecake was not great bc the cheesecake itself didn't have much lime but the rest of this dessert was good! I went to the Somerset by myself on a business trip. The food, service and ambiance were amazing. The coffee was fresh and I never had to wait for a refill. I sat near the window and enjoyed the view while waiting for my food. I had the breakfast sandwich which had homemade chicken sausage (patty) and crispy potatoes. Somerset is a pretty casual and chillaxing place even though it looks upscale. Has a fairly good amount of typical breakfast favorites. The lunch and dinner has more things. At breakfast the group came and got seated and it wasn't busy yet so there wasn't a long wait like others may have. It was serving the brunch menu. The items were mostly breakfast but there was some lunch stuff too. Has some vegan and vegetarian choices. It's $12 for the Açaí Yogurt Parfait. Added a few bucks to substitute dairy free yogurt made with coconut. Simple yet a good day starting meal. As for the others they liked what they got. The portions were a bit small, which was the biggest complaint about the food it seems. Brunch is the most popular time to come. It has a pretty good variety of both the breakfast and lunch items. Kristal (not sure how to spell) provided excellent service 2x this weekend! Both times I enjoyed the Breakfast Sandwich. It is that good! The pickled jalapeños brought the perfect amount of zing combined with the chicken sausage and the egg was fluffy and soft but not mushy. I topped it off with the pastry of the day which was peach preserves surrounded by the flakiest tart crust! The decor and vibes are very modern, fresh, chill/relaxing. Our group did wonder why no one on the staff seemed to be in a good mood/pleasant or frankly interested in being there...other than Kristal. Located on the first floor my the Viceroy, the vibes were calling my name! My friend and I were greeted by the hostess who was able to seat outside. Great table to people watch and soak up some sun rays. We sat for about 10 - 15 mins before my friend went inside to ask about our server. Finally someone came to get our drink orders. We put in our food order too. After the sun moved over the patio, it got a little colder. We noticed blankets, so I went inside and asked for a couple. Our server was knowledgeable but a little condescending and got annoyed when we asked questions about the food. We stopped in to grab drinks, I got a zero proof drink but I wasn't a fan as it tasted like just straight up pineapple juice lol, the rest of us were kind of under the weather so got teas and a few drinks. I was looking for a bougie brunch and this place definitely hit the mark! Connected to the hotel, it's a beautiful chic space inside. We got a reservation without any issues for a large group. Service was great, our waitress was super friendly. I ordered the short rib shakshuka and the skillet sticky bun. The sticky bun was to die for. I don't even really like sweets but it was so hot, fresh, and cinnamoney. Perfect for sharing because of its size. Maybe one of the best cinnamon buns I've ever had in a long time! I thought it would be the fall off the bone kind of meat and instead it was kinda tough for a short rib. If they had more tender meat or picked another type of meat, I'd be much happier. Stranded in town for Christmas, we obtained a 4 pm reservation. Imagine our surprise upon being handed a brunch menu - dinner didn't start until 5, and there was no way to get any of the dinner items until then. It was pretty disappointing, and contributed to a really disappointing day overall. We got the burger, Brussels sprouts, cavatelli, and burrata. Everything was great but I did wish we'd been able to choose from more items instead of having to choose the only dinner type items from the menu. At some point (after 5), we accidentally received the bread board and it looked amazing (we quickly rectified the issue). We had the budino and namelaka for dessert - both were very tasty as well. Finally stopped by Somerset for dinner. While we have had brunch at Somerset and loved it, this was our first time eating dinner here. While our dinner was overall good, the worst thing about this was our waiter. Coincidentally we have had this waiter at another establishment back in January/February. He was not great then and is still not great leading to a bit of a sour experience (both times). The food was yummy though! I do think I like their brunch more though. read more

Opened in 2017, Somerset with Executive Chef Verlord Laguatan and executive pastry chef Danielle Marielle, the restaurant is located in the Viceroy Hotel. The atmosphere and decor had an Art Deco feel, as with the hotel itself. It's modern, contemporary and slick. If you want some fresh house made pastries like the delish Nutella fresh croissant. Nice crisp and flaky, wash it down with some nice coffee. I ordered the spinach goat cheese omelette, which was a 4/5 star. A little dry but with a side of onion Aioli, it made it appealing. This is an upscale restaurant bar with reasonable prices. Kudos to the Bartendar Chase for being attentive, and making all those tasty cocktails. read more

The food was good though, we split the calamari, which was actually really dang good, the French toast, fried chicken sandwich, an an omelet. It was oddly difficult to get our coffees refilled, but besides that, or experience was pretty good. This spot is in the middle of viagra triangle (do ppl even call it that anymore? I was a little underwhelmed. First of all, the place is beautiful with a very nice ambience. The drinks were interesting, although pricey. That's where it ends. The Sinatra was a gin martini with olive oil and rosemary, very nice. The Monroe, Champagne and elderflower, good for brunch. Our server was terrible. He came by three times. First to take our drink order and then again for our food order. Once more to drop off the bill. Our food was delivered by someone else and no one checked on us. I had ordered the seafood bouillabaisse (seafood in broth) and no spoon was given. I tried several times to get the server's attention but it was as if he was trying not to look our way. I ate the small amount of seafood and left the broth, so not worth the price. I think it was the most expensive item on the lunch menu. The other two in our group were similarly disappointed. The Broccollini Pesto Pasta was the favorite, but not a stand out. The lobster croquettes were tasty, but a very small portion. Somerset is a sophisticated dinner spot and a must visit whether or not you're staying at the Viceroy Chicago! My partner and I ultimately decided to plan a staycation at the Viceroy Chicago, which houses Somerset. We walked down for dinner around 5:30 PM and we're seated right away as guests of the hotel, though it was very busy. The best way to describe the atmosphere is bright, glamorous and modern, with a impressive bar, which many people had clearly come to visit. Our waiter was patient and friendly even as we took a little while longer to decide our order. We both got drinks -- The Monroe and the chocolate churro porter -- along with a seasonal salad, orecchiette pasta, and the Somerset cheeseburger. EVERYTHING was phenomenal. The pasta was house made and creamy and the drinks were clever and delicious. Overall, the bill came out to around $100 with tax and tip for two, so I'd definitely say Somerset is a place to take someone special or someone you want to impress, but we will definitely be back because we felt it was worth it! read more

We had to wait around 20-25 minutes before we could get seated even though we already had a reservation because the tables weren't ready. The interior and outside of the restaurant is really beautiful though especially with the lighting. We ordered the burrata and crispy rice to start. The crispy rice with crab was really good and a great app to start with! I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and pancakes to share with a friend. I was quite underwhelmed with the pancakes but the fried chicken sandwich was really juicy and crispy! I heard their dinner menu is really good so maybe that is their specialty. read more
