We were in the area over the labor day holiday, so this is a late review, but it's definitely owed. We looked up brunch and breakfast spots near our hotel -- and had a high expectation of long waits and not much availability. We walked to the Sunny Side Up restaurant, were greeted, and seated within 10 minutes. During what would be a Saturday breakfast rush... Our waitress Angie was very high energy, very friendly, very attentive, and I can't say enough good things about our experience with her. Frankly, the fact that I remember her name a month plus later, should be all that needs to be said. I ordered the southern benedict, some coffee, and OJ. My meal was delicious. My girlfriend had some pancakes with bacon, and she said it was also very good. We were pleased with our breakfast experience here, would definitely check it out if we're in the area visiting again.

After searching far and wide for a breakfast spot without a wait on a Sunday morning we stumbled across Sunny Side Up! I think we just beat the rush because it filled up quickly. This is a 4 story home converted into a breakfast spot so be ready to climb some stairs. The service was quick and great! We both had a croque madame and the kids got a kids breakfast. Everything. Was delicious! Definitely recommend!

5/24/25 Walked to breakfast on a busy Memorial Day weekend. As a group of 5 we waited about 5-7 mins for a free table. When we walked out, the line was out the door. It is an old building and therefore not ADA accessible. However, if you can make up a few stairs, you could request the downstairs level. Restrooms are on the second floor. Food was great and staff were wonderful.

Decent burger for lunch in this cute, cramped little cafe. Makes do with a tight space but food is just good enough.

Not a bad spot at all. I enjoyed the food, but the eggs were runny for what I ordered. Other than that, not bad. The only unfortunate thing was when we ordered, we got 2 sodas and a different guy brought our food out. We never got our sodas until I had to get the attention of the waiter. Usually you get your drinks before the food. I understand if it were busy, but when we ordered, only 2 tables were seated and one already had their food.

We wanted to find a fun spot for breakfast and this place caught my eye on Yelp. For a Monday morning, they were busy! Thankfully, our party of 5 was able to be seated right away. We had to walk up two flights of stairs but they do have seating outside on the street. Our waitress was awesome. So attentive and catered to the two kids in our party well. I opted for the avocado toast for my meal and it was really good! Another in my party enjoyed the Florentine Skillet, though my sister thought the regular Benedict was okay. I found a few things on the menu I'd like to try. They don't have any iced coffee options, so I opted for iced tea during a warm Chicago morning. My nieces really enjoyed the s'mores pancakes, which our waitress offered to have come in a kid-size portion. So nice! I'd totally go back here if I get to visit Chicago again!

Brief wait, efficient and friendly staff. Probably 2 groups n front of us on a Friday afternoon, with less than a 5 min wait. We walked upstairs 2 flights to the top floor, which wasn't a problem for us. Our servers and floor staff were friendly and attentive, always refilling coffees and water. We got the southern breakfast and special item PB&J French toast with pork sausage, bacon & fresh fruit for our sides; everything was delicious, well-portioned, flavored and timely. Would definitely come back!

Honestly I would still recommend this place even with the rate I have given. I think I just had a bad experience. My server was amazing and none of it was on her, but there was this one staff literally yelling to other staff members throwing off the essential vibes of a cool relaxing brunch. Portions? I love corn beef I would not recommend getting it. There was basically no meat, and underneath the egg looked exactly like the small pieces of meat to the side. I wish I would have snapped a photo after I lift the egg. Ahhh the egg asked for my egg to be over hard and that thang was leaking like waterworks. The toast was so hard I couldn't eat it. I must say tho the coffee was great and the photos are breathtaking

I arrived here around 11:20am in a party of 3 on a Thursday morning while on vacation. They have their menu posted outside, which we looked at. They make it known that they don't accept Apple Pay and that an 18% gratuity is added to all checks. Once inside, we were greeted promptly. I thought it was weird that the host pointed to a table in the back of the restaurant that was available and told us we could sit there versus walking us to the table, which she did with other guest. About a minute after seating, we were brought a pitcher of water. It was a cozy place with about 12-14 tables on the lower floor. They have two restrooms and additional seating upstairs on 2nd and 3rd floors. I didn't even realized that had 3 floors until I went to restroom on 2nd floor. There are ample seating options. Seating on the upper floors is less than the mail level. When the waiter came to take our order, we weren't ready. He took a while to come back after we were ready. Additionally, he didn't introduce himself, which is a pet peeve of mine. My sister and i ordered the French toast combo with scrambled eggs, bacon, breakfast potatoes. My son got the cinnamon roll delight pancakes with a side of bacon. Our food came about 10 minutes after ordering. The breakfast potatoes were unseasoned. The bacon was decent. My son's pancakes were delicious as he enjoyed them and I tasted some. I would say my French toast was average. There was nothing special or spectacular about my meal. Apparently, you can't split checks, which made paying different/complex. I'm teaching my son to spend responsibly and use his own money. My sister was paying in cash. I don't like carrying cash and neither of my banks have locations here. Fortunately, we were able to pay using cash and two cards. They should be able to split checks to make it easier.

This was the last of three brunch places my family and I ate at over a long weekend, and the food was definitely ranked as the first by all of us. There was a longer wait outside in the heat though. The Southern Benedict is a great twist on regular eggs Benedict, packing in so much more flavor. We all really enjoyed the side of pancakes we got with the savory dishes. I do wish they had iced coffee or iced lattes available along with the hot coffee.

The food is good and service is attentive. We came for breakfast on a weekday and there were already many tables seated, but we were able to get a table without a problem. They offered us coffee first thing when we sat down, but did not mention it would be $4 (plus free refills). There are 2 kinds of creamer on the table - French vanilla and half and half. The 18% auto gratuity also threw us off, but service was good enough to justify it. The vibe inside is of a cute, older diner. We got the breakfast burger, which was cooked well (usually we ask for medium rare and receive a close to well-done patty, but this was actually medium rare). It was also pretty good! I built my own omelette and was satisfied with the dish. The omelette was huge! The dish was a little bland, but there are salt and pepper shakers that helped it along the way.

Been over a year since I was there last and it's better than I remembered. Southern Benedict - divine! Outdoor seating helps the line go down quickly. They don't take reservations. And even though there was a line we never felt rushed by the staff. Super friendly servers. Watched some of the local dogs stop for treats from their treat jar. Nice touch.

The gluten-free pancake was absolutely to die for! We visited this place two years ago and loved it, so we knew we had to come back while we were in town. From the food to the service to the ambiance, everything was phenomenal. It was everything I could want in a breakfast--simple, flavorful, and absolutely delicious!

Ask the Community - Sunny Side Up Breakfast & Lunch

Is there a long wait Sunday mornings - any call ahead or get in line app used?

No, we went at about 9am and it was no line but it did get really busy while we were there. So it will depend on the time you go.

    Do they take reservations?

only for parties of 6 or more on weekdays

    Is this location BYOB?

    Yes

Are pets allowed on the outdoor seating?

    Yes

What's the wait on a Sunday morning?

Of course the sooner you are there, the better, as the line will grow. If you are there later on, the wait could be 40 min or so. But still worth it.

While I wasn't a big fan of the taste of my drink and dessert, my friend enjoyed both of theirs. Rather, the service was excellent and the views were amazing. My friend ordered The Rocher for dessert, which includes hazelnut cake, mascarpone chantilly, and smoked maldon salt. I ordered a Baked Alaska, consisting of citrus cake, lemon cream, toasted meringue, and salted white chocolate crunch. We both also ordered cocktails. I cannot recall the name of the drinks. I asked for my drink to be fruity and sweet, but it wasn't enough of either for me. The Baked Alaska was fine but too much of various flavors. I wouldn't fault the restaurant for the drink or dessert taste as I know others really enjoyed theirs. Our server was most attentive and very helpful. We found that making a reservation on Open Table only offered a certain number of time slots, and all of them involved having dinner and not just drinks or a dessert. Reservations can also be made on their website though we chose to speak to the front desk about a reservation. Going up to the bar is first come, first serve though. We ended up making an Open Table reservation and were told it was okay to only order drinks and desserts. Cindy's is named in honor of Marian "Cindy" Pritzker, a beloved Chicago philanthropist.
