The portion was generous, the bacon crisped up well, and the whole thing came together better than a standard club usually does. The fries were the soft, soggy kind rather than crunchy, but somehow addictive, I kept reaching for them. I've come to this restaurant 3 Sundays in a row. The first 2 visits were nice ~ the food was delicious and the service was good. Unfortunately today too many things were amiss, but most of all the service. The host was rude overall, but unfortunately this was eclipsed by the insolence of our server, who made comments during our very first interaction which were shockingly rude and uncalled for. In fact, I don't think I've ever been spoken to so rudely at a in my life. From reading other reviews, it seems this is the norm for this particular server. To their credit, it appeared that the restaurant was understaffed in terms of servers. However, it's unacceptable to speak to customers that way. Finally, there was an issue with the food. I ordered a beef pot pie with potatoes on the side. The potatoes came very quickly, and were delicious. Unfortunately the rest of my food and my dining partners' food did not arrive until at least 10 minutes later. I can understand that mixups happen, but I was annoyed because I could see that the rest of our dishes were sitting under the heating lamp but no one delivered them to our table for about 10 minutes. In the meantime, 2 tables near us who had arrived significantly after us, had already received all of their food and started eating. When I received my beef and gravy pie, it was dried out (having ordered this the past 2 visits, I knew it wasn't right). Based on this recent experience, I don't think I'd return. read more

Finally made it to Chapel Street, the Australian-style café I've been meaning to check out for a while, mostly because Australian food isn't something you see every day. I stopped in during a workday lunch while doing some Christmas shopping, and it was pretty empty, which made it easy to grab a seat at the bar. The bartender was super chill and took the time to walk me through the menu and explain the special. I ended up going with the Australian-style Chicken Parm, which came with a free beer. For under $30 total after tip, felt like an awesome deal. The Chicken Parm portion was huge and really good, and it came with fries and a side salad. Everything hit--fries were great, beer was great, salad was solid, and the service was excellent. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely come back, especially for more of a dinner sit-down vibe rather than just a solo lunch at the bar. This is probably my favorite restaurant of 2025 of new places I've tried and it's almost the end of the year which is crazy!!!! Phenomenal food! TENS ACROSS THE BOARD! Staff was friendly! I had an amazing recommendation from (Tracy) I believe was his name not sure if I spelled it right. However the smash burger he recommended was indeed the best burger I've ever had! I also tried a mocha because they roast their coffee on goose island which is right in Chicago! Very delicious and unique, it was a perfect cup of coffee. Not too heavy which I like! Food - Full disclosure - I paid Chapel Street a visit for coffee because the coffee in my hotel room was NOT good. Good thing the latte I ordered was good. It was nice a smooth and even had some nice latte art. I paired it with a Kouign-Amann. The pastries are not made in house, because it was a bit cold (like it came from a fridge). However, it was delicious, flaky, and had the signature caramel flavor that paired perfectly with my latte. There's much more on the menu but for me, it was coffee and a pastry. 1 Star. Chapel Street Cafe is conveniently located near my school, so I decided to finally check them out. They weren't very busy when I came on a Thursday afternoon, and the wait staff was very friendly. The cost was fairly standard (still overpriced but who isn't these days?), but the quality was pretty bad. The matcha just tasted like milk, and the croissant was incredibly dry. I ended up tossing out both after only a few sips / bites. The one plus is that I quite liked the ambiance. There was a lot of seating, and it seemed like it could be a good environment for studying. I had no idea this was attached to the Magnificent Mile Hilton! I got one of the new fall seasonal drinks called "Frankly My Dear I Don't Give An Autumn." It's an Iced Espresso Tonic with Lime. It was stupendous! Perfectly tart with a slight sweetness. I'm usually a black coffee guy, but sometimes I can get taken out of my shell! My partner got a Flat White. It was stunning. The only other Flat White in the US I've had that compares with this one is at a NYC Australian Cafe called Little Collins. We tried a Kouign Amann as well. Nice restaurant/bar near water tower. We came on a Friday evening to enjoy happy hour before dinner reservation at a nearby steakhouse. We wanted to try this happy hour out as it is on one of our apps that we like to use that offer 20% back when you use the app On this occasion, the bar wasn't it too crowded, but we were able to get a seat right at the bar and that was enjoyable. They had nice music playing the TV was really clear and not to overlord in general for the whole establishment. For happy hour, we got popcorn chicken, which was really good. We also tried the spinach artichoke dip. The dip it itself was OK, but it didn't seem like it was thoroughly warm in the middle, but the chips were really good and the flavor was basic. For drinks we did try a couple of different drinks. I'm mostly stuck to the happy hour red wine on this occasion it was an Australian red wine. My husband tried a couple different cocktails. He started with the hot and toddy which is not on the happy hour, but he enjoyed it as it warmed him up. Then he moved over to the espresso martinis that were on the happy hour, and those were very tasty. I will say that they make the espresso fresh right in front of you which makes for a really good espresso martini. I also tried the Cosmo and there wasn't anything too special about that, but it was well balanced, and I did like the tangy flavors that you got from the lemon. Overall, a solid happy hour venue if in the area we would entertain coming here again. Because it's an Australian restaurant they had some really interesting things on their dinner dining menu. To include kangaroo burgers. So that's something to look out for I will also note that they had a pretty good bakery pastry section, so it will be interesting to see what other people thought of actually dining in the restaurant. read more

First time at Chapel Street for breakfast. Matcha lattes and Coffee lattes were both strong and not sweet despite adding vanilla. The quiche was good, but needed to be warmed up longer. My friend is allergic to dairy and unfortunately, she received her latte with dairy milk instead of oat. She originally ordered the potatoes, but also could not get those due to cross contamination. We paid our bill, but luckily looked at it before we left. We were charged for the potatoes and dairy latte. They apologized & were able to refund us for the items. 2/1/2026 Has lunch from the Chicago Restaurant Week menu, and it was amazing. The soup of the day was potato leek and artichoke, and it was very tasty. It was made with chicken stock, but the bartender said the next batch would be made with vegetable broth. The Kangaroo Burger was tender and juicy. I asked for it to be medium well, and it was. I expected much more of a game flavor. The patty was soft. The patty was very lean and tasted slighty different than a beef or bison burger. And the dessert? The Affagota - vanilla ice cream and expresso, was the perfect ending to this meal. Charming, low-key spot with a neighborhood feel that belies its location in the Hilton Hotel. I don't recall what was in the space prior to Chapel Street opening, but this location was crying out for happy hour options for meetups or solo drink at the bar. The timings are generous, as happy hour is from 4-6 pm and includes Saturdays. Every drink I have enjoyed has been impeccable. So far, on separate occasions, I have sampled the white wine, classic vodka martini, and lemon drop martini. I look forward to trying the espresso martini, as that is offered as part of the happy hour deal. The wines are decent, but the cocktails are the best. The bruschetta and happy hour oysters are delicious as well. On top of the happy hour pricing, I was also given a neighborhood discount. It appears there are regulars who stay at the hotel and who are greeted by name. This high degree of personalization speaks to the premium this establishment places on customer relations and will keep me coming back for more. read more

Stopped by one weekend for a mocha and a sausage roll. Both items were good, and I could definitely see myself craving the sausage roll again. It had perfectly flaky pastry and was seasoned well. There's an interesting vibe in the cafe since it's connected to a hotel, and I was initially worried that it would get a lot of hotel guest traffic and be a bit loud and chaotic. In reality it was pretty nicely separated, and the ambiance inside was pretty quiet and relaxed, with small tables and bar seating available. They also have a nice TV that they were showing March Madness on, so I could see this as a great space for catching sporting events with friends and eating something a bit better than your usual bar food and drink. Prices are a little steep, but it is in a schmancy area right near the MCA. The sausage roll was pretty big, too, so I could somewhat justify paying $11 for it. A first visit to the Gold Coast's Australian-inspired brunch favorite delivers decent plates and a service lapse strange enough to override them. Chapel Street Café and Restaurant has been on our radar for a while, one of those spots that keeps turning up on OpenTable and Google Maps with a reputation good enough to make you wonder what you were waiting for. When we finally sat down to book a Saturday brunch reservation, we were genuinely excited. We should have paid closer attention to how easy that booking was. We had a table in under fifteen minutes from the moment we started looking, for brunch, on a Saturday, at a restaurant this well regarded. That kind of last-minute availability can mean a restaurant runs a tight ship. It can also be a warning sign. We chose to believe the former. We were wrong. The dining room backed up the hype, at least at first. We arrived to a full house and a kitchen clearly in motion, and everything passing our table on its way to someone else's looked at least decent, some of it better. That energy made the wait for a hostess to seat us feel like a reasonable trade-off. The patience wore thinner once we were seated. Our server took a long time to make his first appearance, long enough that we had time to notice the line on the menu disclosing a 20 percent gratuity added automatically to every check. We didn't think much of it in the moment. We would. What followed was an odd bit of sequencing: our food arrived before our coffee. When the coffees did show up, they were wrong. Credit where it's due, it wasn't our server who caught the mistake, it was the hostess, who noticed it, took the cups back herself, and worked with the barista to fix it. It was the first of several moments that morning when the people who weren't assigned to our table did more for us than the one who was. Because after that, our server essentially vanished. He never returned to check on the coffee mix-up, so we never got so much as an acknowledgment of it, let alone an apology. We never got the chance to ask for hot sauce, or for jam for our toast, because he never came back to ask if we needed anything. At one point he delivered a plate to the table beside ours, looked directly at ours, sitting cleared and empty, said nothing, and walked off. We had a clear line of sight to him for most of the meal: chatting with other servers and staff, checking his phone, twisting his rat tail between tables. Whatever was happening in that dining room, it wasn't a server drowning in a Saturday rush. By his own body language, he was not, to borrow the industry term, in the weeds. He had simply stopped working our table. Our plates sat cleared on an empty table for at least fifteen minutes before we managed to flag down a different server to ask for the check, and to request that the automatic gratuity be removed given everything above. She was gracious about it, agreed without any pushback, and we watched her walk over and relay the request to our server directly. He still never came by. Neither, at any point that morning, did a manager. That's the part that's stuck with us. This wasn't a kitchen underwater or a floor that had outrun its staff; the rest of the team was clearly capable of covering for him, twice. The food we ate was decent, maybe better than decent. But a restaurant that bills you 20 percent for service automatically, and then can't produce so much as an apology when that service doesn't happen, has a problem bigger than one server twirling his hair by the kitchen door. It was a genuinely strange way to be treated on a first visit, and it's the reason, decent food or not, we won't be back. The bottom line: Good food, undermined by a server who checked out early and a 20 percent gratuity that got charged whether he showed up or not. read more

Unsurprisingly, there aren't a lot of Australian restaurants in Chicagoland, so I was excited to try this Australian-style café recently. At Chapel Street, we had the Melbourne Hot Jam Donuts ($9 for 4) and a Caramel Latte ($5.50), Beans on Toast (traditional Aussie baked beans served with sourdough toast and two eggs your way), and Full Milk Pancakes (fluffy pancakes topped w/ poached pears, vanilla mascarpone, and drizzled w/ real maple syrup). I try to look at online menus in advance to get an idea of the cost of a restaurant before deciding to go there. Upon reviewing my receipt at home, I realized there are a couple of price discrepancies compared to their online menu information. I was charged $18 for the Beans on Toast. On their website and on the PDF menu, it lists the price at $16. I was charged $16 for the Full Milk Pancakes. The PDF menu lists these at $13.50, and the website lists them at $15. I do think the prices we paid match what is on the actual restaurant menu in person, but I wouldn't expect there to be so many pricing differences depending on what source you're looking at - especially for a place that hasn't been open very long. We were waiting in the front for an awkward couple of minutes before we got seated. We weren't given menus right away, so we were pulling this information up on our phones. We were greeted by one server and then ultimately ended up with a different person. He did explain that they were a bit busy and still kind of getting their feet under them. Service started off a bit slow, but we weren't waiting terribly long for our food. I ordered a mocha at first, but they were out of cocoa powder. My latte was fine, but they do charge an extra $1 to add flavor. I wasn't asked how I wanted my eggs with my meal, and honestly, they looked a bit unappetizing. read more
