Took my wife here for her birthday and had an excellent experience. A great bistro style French restaurant tucked into River North. We started with the gem salad which was super fresh, full of flavor and a great dressing to match. Very shareable for 2 people. I went with the Corn Dog as my main and it was gimmick. The full flavor of the foie gras came through and mixed perfectly with the cherry compote. My wife had the duck breast that she absolutely loved. Service was excellent and our waiter made great recommendations. Loved the FPA beer he suggested with my dinner.
We shared: 1. Salade Lyonnaise "Canard" - frisee, escarole, duck confit, duck egg, duck-fat croutons 2. Poulet Roti - Harrison's Farm Chicken Breast, Potato Pave, Tomato Farcie, Tuscan Kale, Sauce Obelix 3. Souffle - spiced molasses, date toffee sauce, vanilla ice cream 4. Cote De Boeuf - 14 oz USDA prime ribeye, French fries, sauce au poivre 5. Roasted Mushrooms 6. Black Truffle Gougere - choux pastry, comte, truffle Mornay, perigord truffle 7. Huitre Chaude - belle du jour oyster, tarragon-horseradish rouille, lemon Not gonna break down everything we ordered but to simplify, will name my favorites and only dish that disappointed. The duck salad and roast chicken are perfectly executed, shareable, and must-gets. The only disappointment, the Prime ribeye, sad to say, altho clearly medium rare in my photos, was a little tough and chewy. Fries were also dry. Service was professional and competent. Regularly checked on us, updated us on food arrival, and cleaned our table. Ambience was classy and relaxing.
Obelix is a delicious French bistro with a twist. It's been my regular spot for a leisurely mid-week lunch, special occasions with mom, and weekend fun brunches with friends. The starters and entrees rotate seasonally, and they have an amazing patisserie team if you've grown tired of profiteroles with ice cream and creme brulee (*yawn*) being your only options. The service is beyond exceptional--I cannot say enough.
This is a fabulous French restaurant and I had a lovely weekday lunch here. Feels very casual and modern inside, intimate but not overcrowded. I had already heard good things about it via word of mouth and it didn't disappoint. I tried their French onion soup, grape & fennel salad, confit duck leg, and lamb merguez couscous. Everything was made to perfection and so enjoyable. Their prixe-fixe menu is pretty good and the items can be ordered individually off of it. For dessert I tried the blueberry vacherine, which was perfectly sweet, fruity, cake-y and cold. Service was delightful- very friendly and attentive.
Modern French comfort in River North! Obélix feels calm and polished at weekday lunch--clean lines, modern, and a touch upscale without being stuffy. We walked in at the start of lunch on a Friday and it was quiet (easy to chat), and the cocktails were good: my Guavamente was bright and minty, and my friend's non-alcoholic French 75 was a hit. The lunch menu even has a few breakfast-leaning options, which scratched our brunch itch on a weekday. Service * Friendly host and server; attentive and thorough in explaining the menu * Easy walk-in at opening; relaxed pace, never rushed Food * Bread service - classic French baguette roll to start * Foie Gras Pancakes - buttery foie + blueberry pancakes + phenomenal maple syrup; bacon was lighter than expected but worked into the syrup * Quiche - very fluffy, almost gelatin-like texture; tastes great, but texture may divide folks * Frites - spot on, crisp and addictive Verdict A refined-yet-approachable lunch spot with excellent cocktails and dialed-in plates. Quiet enough for conversation, polished enough to feel special.
We have very few French restaurants in Detroit, so while planning this trip, I wanted to include one on our itinerary. When I reviewed the online menu and saw the respectable section devoted to "duck", I was sold. The restaurant is upscale yet casual. I loved the banquette seating that wrapped around the perimeter, the checkered flooring, and the brass fixtures throughout the space. The bar was packed and lively throughout the evening. Although my sister is a huge French-onion soup fan, she abstained and instead, we shared the seared foie gras on phyllo-wrapped duck confit, one of the specials that evening. It was excellent; I loved the sear and the smooth buttery texture. I could have made a meal of it. Of course, I had to have duck, so I went with the 10-day-aged Rohan duck breast. Cooked to perfection, the duck was tender but firm, juicy, and delicious. To my surprise, the accompanying duck sausage was even better. The other entrée I considered was the Beef Wellington. I rarely see it on menus anymore, so it was tempting. My sister had the 16oz steak frites and finished every bite, except for a few fries that I sniped off her plate. In keeping with the French theme, I went with mille-feuille for dessert. The crispy sheets were layered with pastry cream and served with a few crepe disks. Lovely! The service was fine; the server walked us through key aspects of the menu. However, the complimentary bread was a disappointment--despite our hunger, we did not ask for seconds.
We've been wanting to try this neighborhood spot, and we made a last minute late lunch reservation on a Sunday. It was quite empty since we were the last table before they changed over for dinner, but they didn't rush us which was nice. Our service was quick and kind as our waiter walked us through recommendations. We started with some fresh oysters - these were lovely with my French 75 cocktail. My fiancé had a nice big bottle of French beer. For our lunch we had the salad lyonnaise and the soup (basically a French onion soup). Both were heavy, especially because the salad had duck confit and a duck egg that was runny to dress the salad in. It was much more duck heavy, which is a good bang for your buck, but I would have liked more lettuce and veggies to accompany it. Other than that, both dishes were tasty and the overall atmosphere simple and nice. I'd like to come back for dinner as I have heard a lot of great things about the rest of the menu! It was very sweet of the staff to also give us some leftover brunch pastries on the house with our leftovers. The pan au chocolat with gold flakes was delicious. The birthday pastry was much bigger and heavier with cream inside.
Such GOOD quiche! We had a lunch at Obelix and it was busy, but not too bad. My only issue was the wait for the food, which ran much longer than I would have liked. Still, once it came, everything was solid. I will definitely be back for dinner one day! -AT
That caviar sandwich is absolutely worth a visit. Decadent, creamy, salty, sweet, messy, and absolutely exquisite. My friend and I made reservations at 5pm, we had to make sure they weren't going to run out. We also had the duck salad and opera cake for dessert. The duck salad was really tasty too, but a bit heavy with the oils from the duck confit. It wasn't the right choice after having the caviar sandwich, but still great. The restaurant itself was modern and open, it was the ambiance for what we were expecting. Our sever was friendly and informative. If I lived in Chicago, I'd be in trouble with that sandwich there.
Finally got a full pastry tasting experience at Obelix! (Gotta give a shoutout their espresso martini!) Pomelo creme croissant 8.3/10: sweet but balanced nicely by the slight tartness/freshness from the pomelo bits distributed throughout, cream wasn't too heavy, and the thin glaze on the top of the croissant not only gave it a nice shine but also added a slight crisp to the flaky pastry Truffle cassis twist 8.7/10: personal favorite of the day, with the sweetness from the dollops of jam worked super well the slight savouriness of the truffle cream. only note for improvement is to amp up the truffle flavor in the cream pate en croute 6.5/10: recommended by our server but was disappointed flavor wasn't memorable (felt like glorified luncheon meat) and the filling was too hard? pastry also didn't have the best texture ramps tart 8.2/10: called a tart but felt almost like a quiche? the filling was soft, eggy, and cheesy... was a good break from the sweet pastries and really liked the pickled veggies that were served with it kumquat + sesame danish 8.2/10: tart, sweet, and nutty! the mascarpone cream added a nice moist component but wish there was more. Couldn't really taste the shiso in the description though ... jamon-fromage croissant 8.0/10: texture-wise my favorite, top tier flakiness but interior was chewy and so buttery. i loved that I got to taste the dough in its purest form since the creams and jams in the other ones masked it. however, admittedly this one needed an additional oomph to it (maybe a creamy cheese served on the side?)
My new favorite thing is daytime/lunch at spots like this. It's quieter and calmer inside. A little bummed the prix fixe lunch menu wasn't served on weekends, but we had a great meal as always. Special shoutout for the spectacular pastries and classic bistro favorites. Service was a little stretched so we had a few long pauses between things, but all in all solid hospitality.
Super great service. Needed to make online reservation for brunch at 2 A very dedicated wine list. Pistachio croissant $14- gorgeous appearance from the outisde. tons of pistachio creme inside. Not too sweet, enough sweetness to appreciate. Jambon-fromage croissant $14- super large, flaky. Tasted Salade lyonnaise canard $26- excellent salad. The crispy duck pieces, was crispy, but not to crispy it tasted burnt, the meat was soft enough to enjoy. Pate en croute $23- very interesting dish. It tastes like super high end spam. You have to eat it with the mustard and side sauce to cut through the fat to appreciate the flavor. Can't differentiate flavor between the duck and boar. On the rotating patisserie menu Green garlic pesto $12- this was my favorite savory pastry. Very crispy with texture. The middle with pesto, egg custard In the middle was very good. Truffle raspberry twist 17- I would pass on this. There's the truffle ganache, which I didn't appreciate the truffle. I wish there was more raspberry Foie gros canele- the foie gras was very soft, light flavor, didn't taste iron or gamey.
Mixed reviews on this place due to weird service. The food was good, but the experience made it a bit off putting. When our server was explaining the menu to us, it felt like she was talking through us, she look around everywhere but at us or our table lol. When she took our order, it felt like she was in a rush, she didn't really answer our questions and that felt like a mechanism to get us to stop asking questions and just order...like sorry for being indecisive, but we're just making sure we don't over order and have a delicious meal. Besides that, the beef wellington was good and very well-made. the fries were over salted tho, it would've been good on its own

Service was great! Our server gave us awesome recommendations for our first visit. The vibes were classy brunch spot, and noise was average once the space filled up. The pistachio croissant was crispy, but the shell was sticky and there was too much cream inside. Luckily, the cream itself wasn't overly sweet or heavy 6/10. The duck confit & cherry danish was SO crunchy, with duck that had a dry pulled-pork-like texture. Loved how the savory duck balanced with the sweet cherry jam and pickled cherries 8.5/10. The fish sandwich had perfectly crispy batter and soft, tender fish, all in a nicely toasted, soft sesame brioche bun. The mayo-based sauce gribiche left a heavy aftertaste but still a solid sandwich 7/10. The crêpe homard elotes was refreshing, bright, and light. Loved the lobster and mushrooms inside, plus the citrus, mushrooms, and potatoes served around it 8.5/10. The banana bread French toast had a good banana bread base, but it was drenched in caramel sauce and became soggy. The bananas were overly sweet, while the salty mascarpone topping pushed the sweet-and-salty contrast a little too far in both directions 6.5/10. Overall, great service and vibes and solid food! Can't wait to come back to try the dinner. read more

A wonderful place for brunch. The pastries are always so fun and interesting, we tried a sweet corn and a savory tomato and they were both outstanding. The restaurant is small and buzzy, you will absolutely be tempted to talk to your neighbors about the food. The service was great. One of my favorite places to eat in chicago. Try the burger with caramelized onions, yummy! read more
We chose to go to this restaurant per recommendations of friends and family, and it definitely did not disappoint. Very tasty cocktails, broad wine selection, and interesting modern takes on classic French Dishes. The escargot and the oysters were some of the best in the city. The steak frites were perfectly cooked with a delicious au poivre sauce. They have an entire section on duck and we tried three of the dishes: the more advanced fois Gras, an interesting take on a corndog with a "Fois-Dog", and the 10 day aged duck which were all unique and delicious. However, The entire group would say that everything tasted very good, but given the extravagant prices we wouldn't say any of the dishes really "popped" or stood out as we expected given how expensive things were. The ambiance is not that of a cozy French bistro, but rather a modern flare -- which is fine, but it does take away a bit of the authenticity of the experience, and any sense of a modern twist on dishes did not make things stand out in a truly remarkable way. Also the service was a bit slow with us having to ask multiple times to have the server come help us. If the overall experience matched the prices, it would probably get a 5 star review. Don't get me wrong, the food is delicious and we had a lovely time, and everyone was very nice there. Would still recommend. read more

Obelix was a fantastic experience. Expect a packed house when you go, they have limited space but are using the most of it. They do have a bar, but I definitely recommend making a reservation ahead of time. The service quality was a 10/10 for how busy they were. Waiters and bussers are constantly moving around clearing plates and bringing new silverware. We ordered: - Persian Love Danish 9/10 - Pistachio Croissant 7/10 (salty) - Duck Liver Mousse 8/10 - Steak Frites Sandwich 9/10 - Salade Lyonnaise Canard 9/10 The only item that didn't necessarily live up to expectations was the Pistachio Croissant as the pistachio cream was a little salty. There was a miscommunication on the duck salad as they brought the duck mousse but they were kind enough to remove it from the check, so shoutout to our waitress for that. 10/10 experience. read more

What an excellent and delectable experience! We made brunch reservations with friends and started with the Midnight Carajillo drinks. They were good. Not my favorite but still got a second one. I appreciated the liquor and coffee mix. We then got some pistachio croissants which were in credible. In addition, I got the steak frites sandwich which was excellent. My husband got the soft shell crab sandwich and he couldn't talk enough about how good it was. For dessert, I got the strawberry and cream croissant. It was also good. The creme is green tea so it's light but you should be aware if green tea is not your jam. Our server was friendly, professional, and not pushy. The restaurant is smaller but not tiny. You'll likely need reservations because this restaurant is featured on social media. For two of us, we spent about $150 before tip. It's worth it. read more
Came here for Sunday brunch. Server was very knowledgeable and helpful given it was a first time visit. Their pasties are works of art (and huge) and noticed every table having enjoying. Ordered the pistachio and chocolate malt pastries. Both were delicious and filled with flavored cream. They also had a few savory pastries on the menu as well. Both my friend and I enjoyed the French onion soup. Tons of melted cheese and rich broth. My only minor critique is wish there were more onions in the soup. Definitely want to come back to try more brunch dishes and check out their dinner menu as well. read more

Incredible spot and a must try. Obelix is tucked away in a cozy spot downtown. Once inside you're always treated with great care. Service, decoration, vibe is consistently excellent. The food is the star. The duck salad is my favorite. Pair with a couple specials and a French 75 and you'll have a special evening. Can't wait to come back! read more
Was in Chicago for a work trip and decided to roll up to Obelix on a Monday for a stellar start to the week. The dining room was packed throughout the evening, but the bar had plenty of seating (bar at around 8 pm, when tables turned over and folks arriving early got a pre-dinner drink). I opted to start with a martini, which was delicious! Pairing with the martini, I got: - Tete De Cochon: Amazing! It's like a build your own wrap and super flavorful. Would order again. - Foie Gras and Crispy Rice: a fun small bite, but honestly not something particularly memorable. I would skip it next time. - Frites: every restaurant will tell you their fries are good, but these fries are damn good. So crispy, perfectly seasoned, and a massive portion that I still almost managed to finish anyways! The martini was so good, I also opted for a second drink which was just as good. The atmosphere in the restaurant is fun. Special shoutout to the bartender John who was really friendly and knew his stuff both on food recommendations as well as fantastic drinks! This is a place definitely worth going (multiple times)! read more

Came here for my birthday brunch. All the food was delicious, albeit pricey. I was excited to try their unique pastry offerings and was surprised to see about 12 different offerings that change regularly. All the ones we tried were good but didn't blow me away. As it's not a bakery, I'd suggest they focus on doing 5-6 pastries extremely well. Go over the top but execute them perfectly and pack them with flavorful filings. Then tables will have to order all the pastries. With 12 on the menu, it felt slightly overwhelming to make a choice. Service was fine although our waitress did make some off hand comments that were a bit strange. Nothing bad, she just didn't make everyone at the table feel welcome, including me. read more

I ordered their this week's special pastries. All were so delicious...Their staff was very welcoming and friendly as well. I asked to use their bathroom even though I was just going to pick up my order. Their decorations were so nice. There were some very good and very bad dishes. foie macarons were flavorful i would definitely get them again. the maple souffle was also very well done. gem salad was delicious and might be my favorite dish of the night. steak frites were good but you could find this most places foie otoro crispy rice was an absolute letdown. the foie was barely there and was overcooked to the point it was like a small piece of rubber. high ceilings and white walls with wooden accents make the space feel airy, service was also good. read more
Obelix occupies a beautiful, light filled space in River North. We were meeting a friend for lunch, and the menu read delicious. Unfortunately, my dishes were weird, maybe creative at best, and left me bewildered. The other dishes served, a tomato sandwich and a citrus cured salmon, were okay. I ordered Moules Frites and Blue Fin Crudo. The Moule Frites came in a sardine can. There were no shells, no soupy garlic butter sauce to scoop up with bread. It was a little container with canned mussels and little pearls of something. We were all scratching our heads confused. The Blue Fin Crudo was submerged in this syrupy sweet liquid that tasted disgusting. I couldn't eat it. The three stars are for the lovely space, the pleasant service, the wonderful wine, and the great company. As for the food, Alain Ducasse would have tossed my dishes into the garbage. read more
Came here for brunch and the place was pretty busy. There are a few open bar seats, however reservations are highly suggested if you want table seating. We tried a variety of pastries, a salad, and the pate en croute. They do croissants very well: buttery, flaky, and very messy. Things that stood out were the green garlic and pesto danish, the foie gras canele, and the salade layonnaise. The pesto danish would be a good choice if you wanted savory bakery item. We also got the ham and cheese croissant however felt like for the size, it was mostly croissant and not enough filling. The foie gras canele was super well done, smooth and buttery tasting with no iron after taste. The duck salad or layonnaise was a good item to break up all the carbs. The duck was crispy and still juicy. If you're Asian, I wouldn't recommend the pate en croute unless you're really interested in it. It's not bad at all, it just reminds me of highend thit nguoi or Viet ham. If you feeling fancy get it but if you know what I'm comparing it to you also know where to get it lol. This would be a great place to celebrate mother's days or birthdays. The waitstaff really know how to make people feel special. My partner initially planned to celebrate my birthday here and the host wished me a happy birthday as we walked in but I think with all the celebrations around me, I was forgotten. I was a little sad but the quality of service was still good even if you weren't celebrating anything. read more
TLDR: One of the best--if not The Best--French restaurants in the city. Yet another solid night at Obelix!! There's really nothing that Obelix doesn't do well. From the duck confit in the Lyonnaise Salade to the Tete de Cochon and Escargots, they've got the classic French dishes that you had in Paris and have been dreaming about since! This time around, we had the Beef Wellington after getting several smaller dishes. I know, a Welly at a French restaurant? I'm personally more of a Ribeye girl than a fillet but it was still fucking solid. The puff pastry really elevated the fillet along with the lovely sauce au poivre! Don't snooze on the Foie Gras & Crispy Rice bc THAT is a true bite of heaven. If you've had a rough week, treat yourself to it. You won't regret it. FYI, their brunch is also SOLID. It's a taste of the grand dinner menu for a slightly more affordable price! read more
