TLDR: One of the best--if not The Best--French restaurants in the city. Yet another solid night at Obelix!! There's really nothing that Obelix doesn't do well. From the duck confit in the Lyonnaise Salade to the Tete de Cochon and Escargots, they've got the classic French dishes that you had in Paris and have been dreaming about since! This time around, we had the Beef Wellington after getting several smaller dishes. I know, a Welly at a French restaurant? I'm personally more of a Ribeye girl than a fillet but it was still fucking solid. The puff pastry really elevated the fillet along with the lovely sauce au poivre! Don't snooze on the Foie Gras & Crispy Rice bc THAT is a true bite of heaven. If you've had a rough week, treat yourself to it. You won't regret it. FYI, their brunch is also SOLID. It's a taste of the grand dinner menu for a slightly more affordable price! read more

Celeste, the insightful server, said the appetizers are large enough to be considered a meal for one person and she was absolutely right! I ordered the French onion soup and the lobster crepe during lunch service (novice tip: if you email and request for the 10-day aged duck breast which is on the dinner menu, they may be able to accommodate you!). I was definitely full and happy with my selections! I only wish I had space for more! Also, Mondays are half off wine bottles! read more

We came for brunch and arrived right at their opening time 10:30am. There was probably only one other party already seated when we arrived. By the time we left, the place was completely full. The service was great. Very friendly, quick and efficient. There was only one issue with the price being charged to what the menu had it listed for. We pointed it and they were able to get it corrected. Besides that, the food tasted delicious. My wife ordered their Truffle French Toast and I ordered their Duck Pozole. Definitely a lot of Duck on this menu. My wife's French toast came with whipped Boursin, honey and perigord truffles all on a thick brioche bread. My wife thought there was too much Boursin, but I thought it had the perfect amount. A really delicious dish nonetheless. My Duck pozole was just as delicious. It came with duck confit and hominy in a Duck broth and served with a side of garnishes, like avocado, radishes, chicharron, cabbage, lime, jalapeños and tostadas. Me being Mexican, I've had my fair share of pozole. But it's mainly with pork and sometimes with chicken. This was my first time trying it with duck, and was exceptional. Would definitely order it again. I'll definitely be returning to check out their dinner menu. read more

We visited Obelix for the first time on a recent weeknight. The cocktails were very tasty. The apps and dinners were delicious and the presentation was photo ready. Felt sorta transported to a French brasserie. Definitely worth going to again. There is 4% surcharge that will be "Added for Staff Retention & Given Directly to Back of House Employees." Fine, but all restaurants should just raise their menu prices and I'll pay for it. read more

This place doesn't worth the rating. The 10-day aged duck was terrible , oddly sweet and unpleasant. The duck sausage was honestly the most disgusting thing I've eaten in the past few months. This one plate alone cost $51, which makes it even worse. Service was equally disappointing. Our waitress never checked in on us once. She didn't ask how the food was, and we were mostly served by the busser. No one clarified whether dishes would come together or separately, so each time we only had one plate to share between two people. Two appetizers and two entrées took almost two hours, and dessert came after that , more than two hours in total! When we mentioned it, the waitress actually blamed us for "eating too fast." The other dishes were just okay , nothing impressive. The duck salad was greasy and overly fatty. Overall, this was one of those bad and disappointing dining experiences I've had in a long time. Terrible food, poor service, and slow pacing. Definitely not worth the price. The second start is for the overall ambience of the restaurant. It looks decent but that's all they have. I don't recommend this restaurant. read more

The atmosphere and and the servie is really good. The menu is a little on the limited side. I had the soft shell crab sandwich with fries. Another friend had the same thing and also didn't like the salty fried. The sandwich was delicious, but the fries had too much salty seasoning. My friend had the onion soup which he liked. The brunch menu seems to have more options which I may try. read more

Got a chance to check out Obelix brunch a month or so ago as it was brought to my attention as a must try! We had a 1pm Sunday reservation to make sure we didn't have to wait since the place is very popular. Glad that we did as the place didn't have an empty seat. Just an FYI, if you cant get a resy, bar seating is available but that may be full as well. Walked in and was greeted by the lovely hostess. She told me my seat was just about ready and while they finished cleaning I saw a friend having brunch and she gave some great recommendations after saying she's been there multiple times. Once seated we were greeted by the very nice Ashley who broke down all the goodies on the menu. I decided to go with my friend's recommendation (& Ashley's lol), the Delice De Bourgogne Quiche. Was decent, but appreciated my date's dish a bit more i which she got the Foie Gras & Pancakes! The syrup and duck bacon definitely set that dish the hell off! Side of Moroccan carrots were very delicious as well. The Lyonnaise Salad (my friend raved about this) was great as well...fully equipped with duck confit, duck egg and duck fried croutons...outstanding! Washed all of this down with a french 75! They were telling us the dinner menu is just as good and would be going through some changes so very much looking forward to a return soon! I definitely recommend Obelix. Great food and service! read more

Came here for dinner to celebrate and very glad we did. We got the Beef Wellington, oysters, macaron au foie gras, foie gras and crispy rice, "the Obelix dog", some drinks, and dessert. All was fantastic. I particularly enjoyed the elongated service due to the extra time it takes for the Beef Wellington (50 minutes). This made my birthday feel quite special. Service was thoughtful and timely. The interior is warm and inviting in that French upscale dining sort of way: moody lighting, tile floors, white curtains in the windows. I highly recommend the beef wellington. The flavors were rich, the pastry extremely flaky, and the beef cooked to what seemed like a medium rare. Definitely consider the macaron au foie gras which was delicious and unique. The canele and the choux pastry desserts we had were both incredible (I don't remember what they were called). read more

Obélix offers an inventive and satisfying take on French cuisine, and as a duck lover, I was impressed. The duck salad (Salade Lyonnaise "Canard") was my personal favorite . Incredibly crispy, rich, and flavorful. The mix of frisée, escarole, and duck confit with a soft duck egg on top felt like a clever and delicious twist on a classic. Easily the highlight of the meal. We also tried the toast, which was well-crafted with bold flavors (especially the tartare one), but definitely on the expensive side for its portion. I'd say it's a splurge item if you're curious, but not essential. For mains, the dry-aged duck breast delivered on its reputation. The skin was beautifully crisped and the meat juicy, paired perfectly with the cabbage and vadouvan gastrique. Savory, slightly tangy, and very comforting. I appreciated the attention to detail in how the dish balanced textures and acidity. Dessert was a bit of a letdown in comparison. We tried the canelé and Paris-Brest . Both looked promising but tasted fairly ordinary. Neither stood out, and I'd probably skip dessert next time. The ambiance strikes a balance between upscale and relaxed, and the service was professional and friendly without being overbearing. I liked that the space didn't take itself too seriously with white tablecloths, but with a lively energy. Overall, Obélix is a creative and well-executed spot, especially if you're into duck done multiple ways. It's a bit pricey, but worth visiting for a special night out or to try something adventurous on the modern French spectrum. read more

Obélix brings a refreshing, modern take on French cuisine while honoring classic techniques. Service is attentive without hovering, knowledgeable without pretension. Obélix manages to walk the line between indulgent and inventive. Each plate is beautifully presented, reflecting both modern aesthetics and deep respect for French culinary tradition. Desserts are not to be missed--expect refined takes on familiar favorites. read more

I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into for this restaurant, but was extremely surprised. This is probably more of a 4.5 star review, but the service certainly put it over the edge. I was there with a group of friends for brunch. I looked at the menu and it seemed a little weird, but thought "what the heck". We were a table of 6 with a child (5 adults, 1 kid). They put us at a slightly too small of a table. We made due, but it would have been nicer being at a slightly larger area. Anyway, the reason this place gets 5 stars from me is the food and service. We tried 4 of the 5 specialty croissants. Wow. I didn't think I was going to like them as much as I did! I also got the french onion soup which was excellent and the special peanut butter and jelly sweet macarons. The only thing that was "ok" was the poutine which was surprising. I thought the sauce was a little too thin and the plate they came on was so hot that it melted the cheese curds. Basically, that meant that I had hot cheese fries in a thin sauce. I still ate it! My friend got a croque monsieur which looked outstanding. As for the service, it was extremely well done, especially since we had a child. She made the child feel welcome and knew exactly how to interact with him. She also made some great recommendations and was generally pretty attentive (it was a busy morning with lots of tables). Pair all the above with an excellent bloody mary and I would call this meal a success. Don't be afraid of the menu. If you see something you like, get one. Chances are, it will be substantial enough for a little meal! read more

As long time diners at La Sardine, we were thrilled when Obelix opened its doors so we could recapture some of that Gallic magic. Obelix, however, is NOT a resurrection of La Sardine (although they share some common DNA), so one needs to temper one's expectations coming in. Obelix is much more daring than La Sardine was, and as a result they have some offerings that astound in their originality and deliciousness. But there is a price to be paid, and that is at the expense of classics. But first, the good. Obelix LOVES duck. And they do some amazing things with it, especially for a foie gras lover like myself. First off is the famous foie-co, which lives up to the hype of deliciousness. A seared lobe of foie gras in a blue corn tortilla with a grape dressing, it is an unctuous and decadent PB&J sandwich with a south of the border spice bomb. Unique and eye-opening, it is a can't miss experience that should be savored. I wouldn't order it every visit, but every visit when I ordered it would be memorable. They also make bite sized foie macarons which remind me of the foie stuffed snickers at the Aviary. They are decadent and sweet and I love to order 2 or 3 for dessert. For brunch, I've seen foie breakfast sandwiches and foie "McGriddles", which look amazing as well. I have no been here yet for brunch, but I want to - the menu for brunch is extensive and varied - almost more so than the dinner menu. Finally, they have a dry aged duck breast, which was fine but a bit salty. Missing, however, is a crispy leg duck confit. And I really miss that. And beyond the duck, the entrees are a bit thin. Multiple fish options, but no rabbit, no sweetbreads, no sausages, no other French bistro staples. Your other options are steak frites and the beef wellington, which are good, but extremely expensive - your dollar would go farther at a steak house. And that is unfortunate, because when they do the French staples on occasion, they are superb - at a book dinner they served roasted rabbit saddle stuffed with duck sausage in a cognac sauce and it was divine! Hopefully we see more of that in the future. The wine list is still excellent in its selections, but the markups have gone up considerably. C'est la vie. The quality here remains high, as one would expect from the Owners. However it is more of a high end experience now than a neighborhood French bistro experience. read more

Wow what a place!! Super small, but cool place so make sure you get reservations. Food is absolutely delicious and staff so friendly. We had a sampling menu so not sure if all these things are on the main menu but regardless, if these are amazing, they all are! My favorite was the Beef Wellington. When I tell you it was the most tender steak I've ever had, I'm lying. Beef Wellington is my all time favorite dish and while I wish it wasn't pre-cut, I can hardly complain. You can literally eat it with just a fork. It was that tender. The Ratatouille was amazing too. Sauces were on point and presentation amazing. The other highlight was the Paris Breast Desert was to die for. I'll be dreaming of it for a long time! read more

One of the best spots in downtown that's less traditional than your usual bistro. It's located in River North, but in the residential area so doesn't feel congested with tourists. I would say it's Bouchon's younger, cooler? sister The bright, modern interior is perfect for brunch. The foie gras monte cristo is a must order. Duck patty with duck egg & duck bacon & duck liver. Everything is squeezed between pain perdu slices It's savory, sweet, and rich. Not a fan of the terrine - tastes a bit fishy but expected from cold octopus. I feel like we overdid it with the extra order of French toast but I rly liked this sweet version with chantilly cream. It's the right amount of fluff and has this yummy caramelized flavor. Also, not pictured but their pistachio croissant is excellent so get that too. Another perfect experience at Obelix! Our party had the halibut, the chicken breast and the duck breast entrees. Each dish was beautifully presented and delicious. 5 stars for a stellar experience. I found out about Obelix when researching where to eat while I was in Chicago. The reviews were mixed but mostly very positive so I made a reservation. It was tricky to actually get a reservation as Obelix is a very popular restaurant. We got lucky, though we did make the reservation a month in advance. To start we both ordered the French onion soup as it was really cold and the warmth of soup was just perfect for us. The broth, bread and cheese were delightful and tasty. What we didn't realize was how big the soup bowl was so it was really filling before we even ordered our entrees. The waiter suggested we try the dinner for 2 option as it was a good amount of food. What he failed to tell us is that it could have fed 3 people. We opted for the beef Wellington. The execution of the dish was perfect! It was a filet mignon cut so you know it was tender accompanied with mushroom duxelle, puff pastry and prosciutto!! It was heavenly!! It came with French fries and broccolini! I have had beef Wellington before but Obelix' is by far the best I have had so far. Our drink was the French 75 and it was tart but we'll balance with the sparkling wine and gin. I truly enjoyed my dining experience and highly recommend this restaurant if you want to eat delicious food in a beautiful establishments. read more

Modern French but it doesn't feel uptight. Get the French Onion Soup Dumplings--they're exactly what they sound like and they go hard. Salty, cheesy, dripping in broth. The duck frites is also elite: perfectly medium-rare duck breast with these crispy little fries that soak up the jus. Ambiance: low lighting, sleek but not snobby. Service is chill, and they'll actually talk through the menu like they care. Good for dates or bougie friend dinners. Bonus: solid cocktails. I had a cognac one with burnt citrus that was way better than it should've been. read more

My meal at Obelix was beyond amazing in every way, except for the server. If the food hadn't been so incredible and our server assistant hadn't been so on top of it, this review would be two stars or less. I'm hoping Chris was having an off night and gets his stuff together before ruining the experience for others. Now on to the positives--the ambiance at Obelix is wonderful. It's a cozy space, with tables being close together, but not so close as to feel like someone is eaves dropping on your conversation. The menu isn't overly large, however the options are all amazing. We started with the Gem Salad. The creme fraiche dressing was light while still being rich in flavor. I enjoyed the coquilles saint-jacques for my main course. Not only was it beautiful on the plate, it was delicious. The scallops were done to perfection. My husband had the zabuton "sauce choron" and said it was incredible. We also split the broccolini. I wish we had saved room for dessert. Let me call out how incredible our server's assistant was. He was on the ball with every small detail without being obtrusive. Their wine selection is good, the foie gras macarons were my favorite (not pictured), everything else is definitely as described, for sure. the service is a mistake, our waitress took a good 15-20 minutes before she was able to take our orders. not to mention, she was rude with it too, an eye roll she probably thought we didn't catch! then, she wouldn't talk to us the rest of the night. another waiter had to grab everything else for us and also had to give us our check, he was good and kind. but my god that waitress. girl go home! read more

Simply one of the best steakhouse experiences in Chicago. Food, service, ambience, all great.

Had a very off experience here, not sure what was going on but service was all over the place and food did not make up for it. Best thing I ate was the bread and butter and even then, the butter needs to be served a little softer. Stopped in for lunch. It wasn't terribly busy (not full), but our server would disappear for periods of time, and the lunch ended up being over 2 hours which is crazy. escargots were ok, onion soup was very salty, pate en croute was fine, chicken was fine, didn't stay for dessert as it took too long. Multiple times we were served food without appropriate silverware (like my soup without a spoon?), where we had to wait and flag someone down to help us. Had to ask for water refills, remind them of drinks ordered that never arrived, was served a dish we didn't order, etc. Fries were served cold and when we brought it up they refried the same plate of fries. Just a number of weird mishaps for a restaurant of this quality and not pressed to make it back to give it another shot read more

I grew up on the near northside at a time when French restaurants, bistros to four star, were plentiful. My favourite was a few blocks from my home and it was called The Red Rooster. It was a tiny bistro with maybe 10 tables? My parents had my birthday party there every year for a decade and we went often in between. So when I came back to visit, my oldest and best restaurant friend said, hey! I found a place whose food is as good as The Red Rooster. It's more posh but it's comfortable. I couldn't decide what to order so I ordered a smattering of appetizers: Pâté en Croûte, Terrine au Foie Gras, jumbo green asparagus, seared scallops. He got the Beef Wellington and yes, it is too much for even one hungry man, so he took home leftovers and had magnificent breakfasts and lunches for a few days. The room is beautiful and was pleasantly lowkey -- the patrons weren't yelling, the music didn't overbear, and it was relaxing -- perhaps it helped that we had an early dinner reservation, at 5:30pm. Everything was indeed delicious. I ate slowly and happily, grazing thru my various dishes. His Wellington was beautifully cooked even though it was small. For dessert we had a vanilla souffle, I think, and was well worth the wait. I will return again. EDIT: I had meant to add that the only reason this is not a five star is the server. He spent most of the time chatting up a 3 top - two dyed blondes and a man. He was charming to them. He barely spoke to us. We had to flag him down several times. My dinner partner remembered the souffle took 30 minutes so after waiting for 10 minutes to get his attention, we finally flagged down a runner who kindly got the negligent waiter into gear. We gave him a good tip on the assumption that he would take care of the runner, bussers, and kitchen, because it certainly wasn't him that earned the 20%. read more

Something about fries at French places - it's so so so crispy but also chewy. So good! The duck skin is something I will dream about. Sadly, the portion size was way too small for $49. I have debated writing this review as I do not typically call out FOH staff. I empathize with how difficult it can be to be a service employee. However, my experience at Obelix was one of the most frustrating experiences I've had at a restaurant. From the moment my wife and I passed the hostess stand, we were made to feel uncomfortable and that we did not belong. I want to preface this review that the kitchen team and runners did an excellent job. The food was incredible and we felt taken care of by other service members apart from our server. This experience significantly impacted my wife and I, particularly because it happened at our anniversary dinner. After we arrived at the restaurant on Saturday October 25, my wife and I had time to kill before our reservation and chose to order a cocktail. No one provided us a menu, so my wife and I ordered our usual, an old fashioned and a whiskey sour and stand. The man behind the bar, wearing a pink jacket and glasses, started to make our drinks, then commented to the folx sitting in front of us, "...at a French restaurant?" I took this to be insinuating how dare we order a cocktail as rudimentary as a whiskey sour in their restaurant. I took note of this and went about our night. When we were seated, our waiter arrived to take our order. My wife and I were looking to purchase a bottle of wine and willing to pay more than usual considering the occasion. Our waiter took no opportunity to discuss price, instead offering the most "economic bottle." I can appreciate the server looking to provide us a deal, however we took this as the server guessing what we could and could not afford and deciding for us. Again, I took note of this and moved on. The rest of our meal was plagued by the same inattentive server. In our 2 hours there, this server forgot our wine order (that he suggested), our dinner order, and our dessert order. Additionally, he checked on us one time, resulting in my wife and I needing to pour our own wine throughout the meal. This wouldn't have been an issue if our server had been having an off night as that I can understand. However, this individual spent time at lots of other tables cracking jokes and chatting, making my wife and I feel unimportant and that we did not belong. I will give credit and say the wine and dessert were comped, however it does not excuse the impact of the experience. I understand this sounds picky and pretentious, however my wife and I were truly excited about this place and what it offered. I am not someone that expects to be waited on hand and foot, but I do expect at a restaurant lauded as this one was that we would be taken care of and we were not. We visited from out of town and made special plans to dine at this restaurant based on the reviews provided. After my experience, I can no longer recommend this place to friends, colleagues, and loved ones. I truly want the FOH team to understand the impact this had on our special night. I hope this review can serve as a catalyst to promote better attention to detail moving forward. read more

BRUNCH REVIEW Went to Obelix for a girl brunch day to try a little bit of everything. Our group tried the bellini, french 75, espresso martini, and some wine selections. All were tasty and had good portion sizes for the prices. Our waitress was wonderful about coming to our table to check in and let us order items as we decided; the croissants go quick so she graciously put some aside that we wanted to take home after our meal was finished. As far as the food... WOW. We decided to each other items we had interest in but share as a group. This gave us the best if all worlds to really explore the menu! Favorite items were the truffle french toast, poutine, tarte and strawberry-rhubarb croissant. You really cannot go wrong with this menu! Highly recommend! read more

It's crazy to see how the reviews are mostly divided between 5 star reviews and 1-2 star reviews. There are not a lot in between. We had reservations for dinner at 7:45 pm this past Saturday, it was packed when we got there. You can find street parking close by, this is a safe area. When we walked in, the group in front of us was still waiting on their table. Our reservation was delayed by about 5-10 mins. Just FYI, the tables are closed to each other so you can literally hear the conversations from both sides of you. We ordered a plethora of different items to try. We had stuffed gougeres, tete de cochon, foie gras and crispy rice, 10 day dry-aged duck breast, choucroute royale, and mille feuille. -stuffed gougeres 5 - this tasted like broccoli and cheddar soup but in a pastry form. It was very good. You get French cheese, parmesan sauce, and truffle. -complimentary bread and butter 1 - I found the bread pieces to be too hard. It would have been nicer if it was warm and soft. Instead it's like cutting into a rock. I took the leftover bread home, microwaved one piece, and it was good. -tete de cochon 5 - crispy pork head. Don't worry it doesn't really come out like a big pork head on the plate. It comes out to like a pulled pork form. When you receive the dish, grab a piece of perilla leaf. You're going to make a sandwich with it. You're going to put the crispy pork head meat, some of the banchan dishes, and plum glaze on top or bottom. -foie gras and crispy rice 5 - basically a sushi bite. Crispy rice has a good crunch. The seared foie gras otoro tuna melts in your mouth. You'll get that Japanese mustard after taste in your mouth. -10 day dry-aged duck breast 5 . Duck was prepared medium rare. Make sure you dip your meat in the sauce for added flavor. -choucroute royale 5 - $55 is still big enough to share between two people. You'll get wagyu pastrami, duck sausage, kielbasa, potatoes, and pieces of ham hock. You get homemade sauerkraut as well as condiments to pair with your meat. Worth getting. -mille feuille 5 - this is a caramelized puff pastry with coffee, caramel, banana, and cocoa nib. Beautiful presentation. The pastry is easy to cut with a spoon but still maintains a hardened texture to give you a soft crunch. Those bananas don't taste like regular bananas. They're more like a sweet snack. Dessert itself is a 5 but I was disappointed that it wasn't a free birthday treat. When I made the reservation, I put birthday for special occasions. Overall, I would rate this about a 4. Reasons being because the comp bread was hard and the dessert wasn't free. Usually, if it's your birthday, there would be a comp dessert. read more
