This was the absolute worst experience I've ever had with a moving company. Jim, one of the owners was totally scattered brained leading up to my moving date. He called me multiple times throughout the week confirming my time we agreed on for the movers and then he called me four times in one day because he had to "move stuff around." We agreed one a flat rate and I gave him the exact number of boxes and furniture we have. The day of the moving was a disaster. We initially agreed upon a time of 8am and then Jim pushed it back to 10am. No big deal at first. Then he continued to push the time back... it was 12pm, 4pm and by 6pm we are still waiting for the movers. They didn't show up until 8pm!! Jim originally told us that one of his trucks broke down but found out by one of the movers, this was a lie. Apparently, their first customer gave them a hard time so they had to make two trips for her and they were short staffed, so every move got pushed back. By the time they were done moving everything, it's was literally after midnight. Now, the time came to pay for everything and of course we wanted a discount and then one of the movers called Jim for us. HE HAD A TERRIBLE ATTITUDE WITH US!! Told us that it shouldn't have taken so long to move everything (despite us giving him the EXACT number of boxes and furniture we had and reconfirmed all of our things that same morning with him) and that we shouldn't get a discount. Then he started yelling at my mom because we called him after midnight WHEN IT WAS HIS FAULT THE MOVE WAS DONE SO LATE BECAUSE THEY LITERALLY DIDNT SHOW UP UNTIL 12 HOURS LATER. Jim did not want to give us a discount and he had a terrible, and I mean, terrible attitude. To make things worse, one of the movers heavily damaged a brand new dresser that he refused to get fixed. Short story: I ended up paying them $100 to show up, be rude, and back out of the move. I would avoid this company at all costs. I was originally really grateful to Bill's Moving. My scheduled mover stood me up and I needed someone as soon as possible. Bill was great on the phone - promised a crew of three by the afternoon and a 16' truck. I was a little worried about the truck - other movers had said they couldn't help me because I would have too much stuff, and I told Bill that - but Bill said it would be okay. The crew did arrive right on time. That's when the trouble started. One of the guys, Jeremy, started complaining before he even got up the front stairs. He was annoyed that there was a gate. Then he was annoyed at the lobby doors. Then he let out a huge groan when he saw the stairs, even though I had made it clear to Bill that I was on the second floor. And when he got into my apartment, he said there was *no way* they could fit the stuff in the truck. They'd have to make two trips, all the way from one side of the city to the other, and it would take forever. The other two guys were pretty silent while Jeremy went on like this - but I have to say that one of them smelled pretty strongly of beer. I called Bill to report what was going on, and he was really rude. He was mad about the truck, and tried to claim I hadn't been clear (I gave him exact numbers of boxes and furniture!), and then he actually started *yelling* at me about how he was out money now. A high 5 stars for Bill and his merry men! I was stuck in a tight situation where only a week before the move my landlord changed the date. I was forced to use movers instead of the tried-and-sometimes-true friends + pizza + a van route I've taken before. You know how it goes: clumsy, slow, and tiring. Getting friends to help you move is like pulling teeth and then being forced to eat glass. This was nothing like that. This was angel food cake and a bubble bath compared to that. I frantically called movers I saw reviewed well on yelp (thanks, community!). Little did I know May 1 was supposedly the busiest moving weekend of the year. Who are all you freaks, and why did you make this so difficult? The first available guys were Bill's Moving Services. Thank goodness. Bill took the time to answer my call even while he was out running errands. I told him about my situation, the kind of place I lived in, and my schedule, and he was ready with a quote 30 minutes later. I asked him repeatedly if he needed to know how much stuff I owned because I'd read some negative reviews of other companies saying the truck was too small or the rate was higher because of a poor estimate. No problem here! Bill uses an enormous truck with plenty of room for my apartment four times over, so he knew it would work out just fine. Bill was in contact with me throughout the week making follow-up calls to verify the timing, and he even offered to come earlier in the day to compensate for anticipated traffic. He thought ahead! I like that. The two-man crew showed up at my apartment right on time with smiles on and plenty of packing supplies in-hand. Oh yeah. they don't charge you for the amount of supplies they use. There's just one flat fee. And trust me, they don't skimp. You also get plenty of wardrobe boxes to pack your clothing into. So, back to the guys. I never once caught a frown, frustrated sigh, complaint, lazy attitude, or lack of energy in these men. Both of them were professional and incredibly friendly. Plus, both of them had years of moving experience behind them, so I knew I could trust them with my things. I just wish I could remember their names! Sorry, dudes. Side-plug: Since I used RediBox to pack almost all my belongings, the crates were super-quick to move into the truck and into my new place. I highly recommend using them when you hire Bill's Moving Services. Moving into my new place took very little time despite having to take off the front door and maneuver a cramped stairway. Once again, NO poor attitudes from the hard-working crew! They even brought in a surprise third guy to help move me in and didn't charge me any extra! Huge bonus! Everything went perfectly. Smooth as cake batter (apparently I want cake right now). What would have been a stressful day for me turned out to be the best moving experience I've ever had. Short version: Bill was nice at first. Movers were late. Movers were unskilled. Movers broke window. Paul said movers would pay for window. Story changed a week later. Bill was not so nice. Paul accused landlord of "touching sofa" during window break. After unpacking, saw lots of scratches and breaks. Still waiting for reimbursement. Looking into legal options. Long version: Bill came to my rescue when I was in a tight spot, but that's about the only good thing I can say. Let me explain: I am "of the age" where the thought of moving my own stuff elicits a sizable amount of dread. Frankly, I just don't want to do it. Having not hired movers before, I called around two weeks prior to my move but every other moving service was already booked. Then I called Bill and, to my surprise, he was available. I booked the move for August 1 at 7:30 AM, paid the deposit and moved on with life. Bill's customer service during the initial call was great. He seemed kind and professional. Things went downhill on the day of the move, though. The movers were due to arrive at 7:30 AM. Promptness was important for two reasons: 1) The person moving into my old apartment was scheduled to move in at 10 AM (which I explained to Bill) and 2) I had to fly out for a funeral later that day. Sadly, the movers didn't arrive until 8:10 and didn't get started until 8:30. On top of that, these guys didn't seem to be professionals. They looked like guys off the street who were hired to haul stuff, which I would later find out was an accurate assessment. The move was going smoothly until they got to the sofa. I have a 3-seater. It's heavy and bulky, but this shouldn't have been an issue for professional movers. In fact, the guys who delivered the sofa when I bought it had no problem maneuvering the sofa--none at all. Bill's guys, however, didn't want to take it up the back stairs because they didn't know how to maneuver it. But my landlord didn't want them to take it up front. In the end, they agreed to do as my landlord wished--take the sofa up the back stairs. It took them almost an hour to get the sofa upstairs and just as they were rounding the last few steps, I heard a crash. Yep, they broke a window in the stairwell. I walked over to tell my landlord. Then I called Paul (the Operations guy) and he said they would send out a check. I even gave my landlord the phone so he and Paul could discuss the arrangement. At this point, I figured it was sorted--silly me. When I got back in town, my landlord gave me the receipt for the glass. I called Paul who told me to scan and email it over, but not before saying "My guys said your landlord was touching the sofa when the glass broke." At this point I knew it was going to go south. I explained that my landlord was on the other side of the building helping the new tenant move into my old apartment. When I got off the phone, I scanned and emailed the receipt as requested. Paul said he would respond via email after he "sent the receipt to his supervisors." After not receiving a response from Paul, I called Bill (who I had cc'd on the email to Paul). In short, Bill gave me the runaround. When I pressed him for a time estimate on the reimbursement he said that "was handled by operations." So I had Paul saying he would speak with his supervisor (Bill) and Bill saying operations (Paul) would handle it. It's been a little over two weeks since the move and incident. I am speaking with my lawyer about my legal options. Oh, and the best part? After returning from an out-of-town funeral and unpacking, I found a broken picture frame, a scratched up bed frame, scratched end tables and tape(!) applied to my printer stand, which resulted in peeling of the laminate when I tried to take the tape off. After all these issues, I returned to Yelp to see if I was the only one with this experience. Turns out there are over 60 reviews with similar negative experiences. I'm not sure why Yelp doesn't show these. I definitely would not have used Bill's services had I seen all the reviews. Do yourself a favor and don't call these guys. Keep looking or hire guys off the street (that's what Bill does anyway). read more

The movers scratched my TV and also damaged my couch. When I addressed the issue, the mover replied that the couch was already like that and that it was from a pet but it clearly was because of the two movers poor experience and judgement. Sloppy job all around they did not wrap my couch before taking on/off truck and moving into the home. My items were left disassembled and unorganized. When I contacted the owner and manager, he was extremely rude and manipulative. Jimmy and Bill (manager/owner) refused to discount or take any money off the total. No credit offered or anything! Back to United Van Lines for us! The first problem occurred when the gentlemen moving us out were late in arriving--not a big issue, but put us behind for the rest of a stressful day. All of the movers were pleasant and professional, and every dealing I've had with Tony has been fantastic. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about my dealings with Bill. A few of our items were damaged in the move when a box of fragile items was placed at the bottom of the stack, despite the prominent "Fragile!" markings. These were not expensive items, mostly a couple of sentimental pieces such as wedding gifts. I called Bill to ask about the procedure for making a claim for these items within a week of the move, and he was incredibly rude and aggressive. Tony even apologized later for Bill's bad behavior and indicated this is a problem with Bill. My litigation instincts kicked into overdrive, and I was ready to go after Bill to cover our damages as a matter of principle. Fortunately, my husband's calmer head prevailed and he persuaded me that the minor losses we suffered were not worth my time. At least I can still Yelp! I would use Tony in a heartbeat if he were associated with another company. However, I am going back to United for my next move because I want to be with a company that stands behind their services. read more

I needed some strong arms to unload a truckload of apartment-stuff and I had less than 24 hours to find them! Granted it was the middle of the month, so easier to find help, but even so, I had a limited budget and needed to make arrangements fast. I called Bills Moving Services and they found me 3 guys to move my things at $25 per hour per man. WOW! I had had some bad experiences before trying to book movers who never showed up (nightmare) and I needed a lot of reassurance from Bill that everything would work out. He was so nice about! Onan and 2 other guys showed up on time and did a fantastic job. We were done well in advance of deadlines, they were friendly, competent, very hard-working and had a good sense of humor, something invaluable when moving heavy furniture! They not only arrived 3 hours late, but they charged me $300 more than my estimated fee. They were very inexperienced, left some of my furniture at my old place, and when I asked about it, they lied. They disappeared for 30 minutes, weren't at the truck, nowhere to be found. FIVE of my larger furniture items were damaged during the move. They were asked to wrap these items and they assured me it would be fine without the wrap. When I called the company, I was passed around from Bill to another guy and to a third guy. I never got this issue resolved. I spoke with them in a professional manner and one of the men on the phone told me to f*** off. I had a great experience with Bill's Moving service. I called pretty last minute. (less than a week prior). The rates were great. As mentioned below, $75 per hour for two guys and a truck. They moved all of my stuff from Lincoln Square to Wicker Park in just under 3 hours. The movers, Paul and David, were friendly, on time and funny. ALSO, I did not have enough money in my account to cover the check. I called Bill and told him I thought I would have my tax return but did not and wasn't getting paid for two days. He said he would hold on to my check until I got paid that Friday. What a relief! I will tell anyone I know to go to Bill's Moving first. read more

Do not employ for any reason. This company is neither bonded nor licensed in Illinois or Chicago. Bill's real name is William Rock, and he also does business under the name Bill's Labor Services. He advertises heavily on craigslist. We hired Bill to move apartments on March 23, 2011. His crew, led by a guy named Walter, broke a large window during the move without telling me about it, but worse, they severely damaged an heirloom upright piano--they literally broke the front leg. The piano cannot be repaired. I started calling Bill immediately, and he promised to fix the piano. At this stage, Bill talks a good game, but he will never deliver. After you reach him with a complaint, he then ignores your calls. You can call 20 times, and he'll simply avoid your calls. He is a very practiced liar; once, when I called him from a phone number he didn't recognize, he said he hadn't gotten back to us for ten days due to pneumonia, but that he would take care of the piano. I was referred to Bill by my usual mover and thought if Bob endorses it can't be bad. Was I ever wrong. Our 2:00pm appointment turned into 4:00pm...5:00pm...7:30pm...you get the picture. Luckily for me we were able to find new movers and the last 16' truck on the northside. 4.5 hours later we were moved w/o Bill's assistance. I was not going to write a review, and just let our bad experience go, but... Pros: Availability and friendliness of the movers Cons: Damage to belongings These guys are just not professionals. I keep discovering more and more damage to our things, mostly small dings and scratches, but several pieces that were more extensively damaged, like a cut in the sofa, from where they cut off the wrap. Price We were quoted a price far below our final price tag, which was close to $1,000 for a two bedroom plus office. This is a normal price-tag for a really good professional moving company, but what we got, was really below par. The movers must have noticed, that they broke the side of our dresser into two pieces, but they did not say anything. That is just not right. Response from owner I contacted Bill to let him know we have several damaged pieces and sent him pictures of the damage. He said he'd pass it on to the office. That was about a month ago, and I haven't head a word from anybody since. Just really do not recommend. Plan ahead, so you can book a professional company. read more

Because of this, the move took a lot longer than expected. -One of the men was texting during the move and would wander off. -My lamp was broken because it was carried wrong. -My desk is damaged. -My brand new walls that just got fresh dry wall and paint are damaged. -I was told after the job was done that they ONLY take cash (which happened to be at 11:00 at night) and that a credit card or check wouldn't work. after scheduling movers two months in advance for the WRONG DATE, it was one week before i had to move during one of two of the busiest moving weekends of the year in chicago and i was in a panic. bill's was referred to me by dave at LT moving. i called and they had availability for my preferred date, but asked if i could move the a day later to keep my costs down as they already had a truck rented for the other date and wanted to avoid having to charge me for a truck rental too. sweet. $75/hour got me 2 guys and a truck. they estimated for my move from a 3br in bucktown (just me) to a studio in logan square it'd be 2-3 hours. i emailed bill my details, he sent back a confirmation, and we were set. the crew showed up a smidge late (but had called to clarify directions as i lived on a kind of tricky-to-find street). they surveyed my stuff and got to work. the whole thing took over 3 hours which was slightly annoying, but i could tell they were working really hard, so i couldn't get too miffed. i think a 3-man crew may have been better suited for the job. (i didn't think i had THAT much stuff, but then again, who ever thinks they do?) all-in-all, a totally acceptable experience. nothing was broken, and the guys were nice and hard-workers. I've worked with Bill's Movers three times now, and the first two times the service was absolutely amazing. I worked with Bill's Son (I believe) and his team the first two times, and they really are great. They go out of their way to ensure that the moving process is a breeze and were very timely. I am revising my original review because of a few things that happened with my last move. For my last move Bill sent two young guys to help move all of our belongings into a Uhaul for a move across the country. Because it was a weekday, the movers we usually work with on his staff were unavailable. We made it very clear that everything was going into a Uhaul, and that we wanted everything secured and wrapped up to be protected for the long cross country journey ahead. When we arrived in California, our movers out here began unloading the Uhaul only to find that nothing had been properly secured or wrapped for the move! Furniture was only wrapped in a thin layer of saran wrap which ripped during the journey so things got dirty and marked up. The moving blankets which WE had provided, had been thrown on the ground in the back of the trailer and were never even used. Nothing had been secured to the truck either. Given that I had very good experiences with Bill in the past, I sent him a nice email explaining what had happened and showed him pictures of how multiple pieces furniture had been damaged. Bill never responded or apologized for the incident. So take what you will from this. If you use them I recommend that you ask for the son, and supervise the move closely. read more

Overall, I was pleased. They moved my girlfriend and I out of our sepearte apartments into an apartment together. They brought wardrobe boxes but not poles to hang the cloths in them. A couple of minor complaints I had was that there is a two hour minimum charge and that they charge for the plastic wrapping ($25 and which they will use without asking first). Not only did I get first rate service, but the crew was pleasant and professional in every manner. In fact, I had to correct Joe every time he'd call me Ma'am and say, "Please just call me Angela." The two movers, Joe and Lavance, were on time, beyond professional and incredibly helpful in the whole moving process. Movers were an hour and a half late, then when they arrived in the neighborhood, called from three different locations, insisting they were behind my building. Andy, the one in charge, was ABSOLUTELY HAMMERED DRUNK, and Jason, the new guy, couldn't override Andy's decisions--like pack only the boxes I'd moved into the yard onto the truck, not the heavy stuff I'd hired movers to move. Terrible, terrible, terrible. This is a company that employs unreliable, incompetent people.
