Claypot rice outshines the cheung fun (steamed rice rolls) Came here for a food adventure with some people. Clay pot rice is rare in Boston area so we decided to try. Started out with the honey w/ salty lemon drink. It is such a confusing drink. It is salty and sweet at the same time. Didn't know what I was expecting, as it is in the name of the drink. It's definitely an acquired taste. Next time, I would stick with a tea. Cheung funs are next and we got the beef brisket and shrimp w/ egg. The rice rolls are thinner than what are typically served in other places so the idea is you get more of the flavors from the sauces trapped in the rolls. Generally, I am not a big fan of cheung funs but the people I am eating with are and they liked both these steamed rice rolls, so kudos. Watercrest with preserved eggs came next. I liked the watercrest but not a big fan of the preserved eggs. Aside from the preserved eggs, this is a good veggie dish. And finally, the stars of the show, we got the frog clay pot rice and the Chinese sausage / bacon / preserved duck clay pot rice. Although I am not a big fan in the idea of eating reptiles, the frog clay pot was good. I rarely eat frogs but it is just as I remembered: the chicken taste with a fish-like meat texture and soft cartilage bones. The frog was cooked very well and the sauce was great for the frog, the rice, and even the crunchy rice crust at the bottom of the clay pot. The Chinese sausage / bacon / preserved duck clay pot rice wasn't bad either. I wish there was more of a sear on the meats, like a little bit of burn on the edges that would give a flavorful crunch to the meats and a more good smokey oily taste to the rest of the rice and down to the rice crust. This isn't bad though. Overall, a good little spot. Not a lot of seating inside so the wait for a seat can be long. Street parking. Get a clay pot rice! read more

food is good but the wait is way too long, so i knock off a star- it looks like they prioritized dine in before take out we was estimated 30 min and waited over an hour - only reason I'm writing this review because it happen more than one occasion and you would think we would have learn the first 2 time. Highly recommend ordering ahead for take out. read more

What a great find it was for us. There's a small pocket of authentic mom and pop Chinese restaurants right behind the Wollaston train stop. The clay pots looked really good, but i ended up ordering the shrimp rice roll with egg and wonton soup. Its so fresh and the texture was good. Ive had plenty of rice rolls from dim sums that's always mushy. This restaurant makes it 100x better with their own soy sauce dressing. The restaurant inside only has a few tables, so come at an off hour for a seat. read more

Totally forgot about this place because of the pandemic, but they are still open and they are serving take outs! This place still taste awesome and I recommend the curry fish ball cheong fun! read more

All I can say is WOW! A true hole in the wall place Big Fun Cafe is super under-rated for how amazing their food really is. I've worked in Boston's Chinatown for a few years and I believe the food at Big Fun is better and more authentic than most of the options available in Chinatown. I heard about Big Fun Cafe awhile back but decided to finally pull the trigger and give it a try and truly regret not trying it earlier. If it's not already clear, this place is known for their Cantonese rice rolls which they make fresh. They have over 15 varieties of rice rolls you can order from their menu. This is nothing like the dim sum rice rolls because it's waaaay better. I love that they include scallions and cilantro with their rice rolls with the options to include even more veggies for free! It's pretty cheap too - you can get an order of rice rolls for $5-$6. The rice rolls here are served hot, the layers are super thin and delicate but it still maintains its shape and has nice slight chewiness to it. After trying it this Saturday I was so mind blown that I came back the next day and ordered 6 rolls to bring to my super hard to please Asian mom and have her try it out. It received the Asian mom seal of approval so I know we're onto something special. Give Big Fun a try you won't regret it! read more

I came back from NYC recently after trying Joe's steam roll and was interested after seeing this restaurant nearby Boston! First off, this place is small and cramped. I do appreciate that it is newly renovated, different than the old run down Chinese restaurants in Boston Chinatown. However, with only 4-5 tables in the restaurant and a mixture of chilly weather, there were many people hovering over my table while I was eating and a lot of cool breezes that blew over my styrofoam bowl every time someone opens the front door. Yes, this restaurant serves with styrofoam bowls and take out chopsticks! This restaurant features Chinese steam roll, clay pot rice and noodle soups. I ordered the beef steam rolls and clay pot to try. The clay pot takes over 20-25 minutes to prepare, which is a bad mixture for a small restaurant. The steam roll takes only 5 minutes to come out. So I devoured the steam roll which got me super hungry and had to eat for days for my clay pot to come out! I do have to say that the steam rolls were super delicious. However, the clay pot rice was aright. Not really worth the wait. The most important thing I want to comment is the soy sauces for the steam rolls and clay pot rice. Traditionally, these soy sauces are distinct from each other. I commend that they made the effort to have that at their restaurant. However, the soy sauce appears to be watered down and lacks depth of flavor. The essence of the clay pot rice AND steam rolls is really the soy sauce. But they totally missed the mark. It was watered down yet salty when it should be thick, savory and sweet. And on top of all that, I was super upset that we were not given spoons for our rice! I mean, my chopstick skills are ok, but I would appreciate a spoon for my rice dish, even if it was a plastic spoon. read more

Came here on a early Saturday morning and oh boy it gets packed here because of how small the place is. There's about only 5 tables so I definitely don't recommend coming here with a big group because it's a very tight squeeze. I was excited for this place to open up. The quality of the rice noodle is probably the closest thing you would get to being HK authentic and fresh. But some stars were dubbed off because the soy sauce they use wasn't the sweet one like in true HK rice rolls. The curry fish balls weren't even cooked in the curry sauce it tasted like it was just microwaved to be honest so I was pretty disappointed in that. The lemon tea was so watered down it was just water with lemon. I would honestly just order the rice rolls to go pour my own sauce over it. But other than that everything else on the menu was pretty meh. I would say if you want HK food to go over to Saigon corner! read more

Considering it has been opened for a week or so, we came in for dinner anticipating some homemade cheung fun. But it was all sold out, and we were not there that late in the evening so we decided to order something and the waitress told us the cha sui was sold out, chicken wasnt really prepared and the beef brisket was all sold out. We did not have many choices left. The waitress suggested ordering beef with Longhorn pepper over rice. The portion was small for the price we paid for. There was barely any sauce on the rice, but it had a lot of onions. Then we ordered the porridge and it was okay with a lot of pork, which is a plus. But we do think we will be back again to try to clay pot and the cheung fun next time. read more

The rice rolls here are the best in the boston area, so freaking good!!! I got the Shrimp rice rolls with extra shrimp + extra cilantro and scallions. Incredible! This is my favorite dim sum item, and they specialize on making this one item. I also got the rice rolls w/ egg + beef brisket and it was truly wonderful! The curry fish balls were tasty for sure, very good curry flavor. Lastly I got the 5 flavors half duck, it was very tender and tasty, and price was reasonable. All employee's wore masks which is essential. I am definitely coming back again, I think maybe tomorrow. Also when I came in I saw what everyone else was being served and it looked really good, excited to come back! read more

The best rice roll I've ever had... This includes the one I had in Hong Kong. I ordered the beef, the meat is tender, the rice roll is thin and very smooth. The only down side of the rice roll is the rice roll soy sauce, too salty. Hubby ordered the salty hock feet pot/rice. It only took 15min. The flavor is tasty but the pork can use more cooking, not tender enough. The rice is really good, not soggy. You can taste each and every rice. Good stuff. Customer service is excellent~~ the lady come to check on us twice to make sure it's to our liking. This is the first time we tried this place... Will come back for sure!! Next time I might order takeout and have their sauce on the side so I can make and use my own rice-roll sauce at home read more

It's a hole in the wall on a corner in Quincy and an accidental find as the cafe next door was closed. So happy that happened. This place is FANTASTIC. Ancient (kidding) style of rice-ground flour used to make the rice rolls. You know, they pour the fresh mix in a flat stainless steel plate and then add the stuff you want. They had pork liver/kidney rice rolls!!!!!! Couldn't believe how tender and rich they were without being chewy! The shrimp rice roll was also great. They also make their own soymilk. This was a 3pm teatime meal for us so we did not order too much as we had dinner reservations at 6p. The nourishing soups are on the menu- special was melon with eel that day. SO REGRET not having room to have some. Good reason to go back , though. Curry balls were okay only. Curry was good but not bouncy enough for the mouth-feel. read more

Must visit if you are a fan of cheung fun (rice noodles) or clay pot rice. I have had a lot of cheung fun in my life and they got the texture just right- a perfect balance of silkiness, bounciness, and chew. The fried dough cheung fun was the crowd favorite. Clay pot rices are a traditional food from an area in China called Taishan/Toisan and I believe the owner is from there. The rice was masterfully cooked with crispy pieces along the clay pot and aroma was intoxicating. Go for yellow eel if you want to be super traditional, but chinese sausage and bacon (also traditional) may be more approachable. I also loved that they put the chueng fun and clay pot sauces on the table so you can add more according to your taste. read more

This cafe has been on the top of my list but since I don't live in Quincy... it always seems like a big effort to go. But today, I happen to be in the area so you best believe I would stop here. This is a very unassuming corner cafe that reminds me of those you would find in Asia. The owner is very friendly and gives good suggestions. I am a sucker for a flat noodle and these are made in house with all types of fillings. I got the shrimp roll and it was heaping with filling. For my own preference, I found the rice roll a bit too soft. I like mine with a bit more chew but I definitely would still come back to have it again. The all star from my lunch was the house made soy milk. I even bought a container to go! read more

Can't believe I waited so long to try this place! It's in Big Boss's old location, and Big Fun's specialty is clay pot rice and rice rolls. The rice rolls are fantastic, and they are a completely different style than the big and thick rolls you usually get around here at dim sum. These are light and delicate and flavorful. The clay pot rice is all great, with a ton of rice and a good amount of topping, and the rice gets really delicious and crispy as you let it sit in the clay pot. The menu is somewhat small, but it has all the staples you'd find in a Hong Kong or southern Chinese hole-in-the-wall diner, and I haven't had a single bad dish. The owners are also amazingly nice and friendly, and the food comes out quickly! read more

The best Cantonese breakfast place I could find so far. Cheung Fun tasted the same as the ones back in Guangzhou, China. Small cafe spot mom and pop style for a quick take out. We actually sat in to eat but no one was there and we ate very quickly (10 mins). We enjoyed the Char Siu Rice Rolls with egg (Cheng Fun). Space is small not comfortable for young kids. But the food is so good. Many pickups and delivery.

The plot clay rice is very very authentic. As a Cantonese who grew up in southern China, this rice is very good taste and the beef is very nice. However, the rice roll was not the most fitting. They added fish sauce into the soy sauce, and made the rice roll rather "fishy". I would say this addition is not common at all and it's definitely not fitting for someone grew up eating steamed soy rice rolls. Just my two cents read more

I was so excited to try this clay pot and rice roll place, but pretty disappointed by the mediocre to borderline disappointing food. The pictures definitely look better than they taste. For starters, this place is small so it feels awkward to wait inside when it's cold out. Thus, we waited in our car. The waitress told us that the clay pots would take half an hour to make so we could order that first while we wait. I tried the curry fish balls, beef chow fun, cha siu rice roll, beef brisket rice roll, beef rice roll, and the chinese sausage with minced beef clay pot. The curry fish ball wasn't very flavorful. The ones from Saigon Corner (also located in Quincy) are so much better. The beef chow fun was even more disappointing because it was the worst beef chow fun I've ever had. It was super oily and very bland. Next, the highly anticipated rice rolls (which we were afraid would run out based on prior Yelp comments) were just okay. I expected these to be amazing since they are supposedly freshly made. There was barely any meat in the beef and cha siu rice rolls. The only reason the beef brisket one looked like there was a decent amount of meat was because the brisket was on top. Additionally, although the rice rolls may have been fresh, they were hard to eat and fell apart very easily. I've had better rice rolls at dim sum places. Lastly, we chose the clay pot combination. This part was confusing because it seemed like we could combine two different types of clay pot mixtures, but apparently not? For example, we chose to do the combination of the chinese sausage, bacon, and preserved duck and the minced beef with egg. Yet they only included chinese sausage and minced beef? Apparently the other ingredients would be an additional charge? I don't understand this because those were literally the combination options they gave us on the menu. Next, the clay pot itself was underwhelming and just as bland as the chow fun. We had to add the rice roll sauce to the rice to make it taste better. Overall, this place had a good concept but wasn't executed very well. I just hope their food quality gets better, although I probably won't be back. read more

I ordered beef flat rice noodles ( cheung funn) and congees for take out. The flat rice noodles was okay and not impressive. The short: Average at best, call at least 40 mins ahead for take out, not worth dining in. It is opening week...but honestly not sure I'd give this place another try because even without the wait, newness, etc. the food is just okay... The food: I came on a Wed night, the rice rolls or Cherng fun were sold out before 7pm, which is prime dinner hour. You'd think they'd know to order extra for opening weekend rush, and from the sounds of previous reviews, they've run out the other nights too, so wouldn't it make sense to restock ingredients overnight at a local grocery story or something? My date and I settled for 2 clay pot options. We decided to get take-out since the seats were full (more on this later), but the most disappointing part was that the clay pot rice did not have a crispy bottom, and there was very little meat/toppings. The majority of the pot was rice. The flavor profiles were mild, could have used more seasoning (soy sauce, scallions, garlic, ginger, the basics?) It wasn't bad food, but not great food either. Overall, we paid just under $30 for 2 rice bowls, which for the novelty of rice pot would be okay....except there wasn't enough toppings for me to think this is worth it. The experience: This place is tiny. Probably seats 10-15 max, and when we arrived, all the seats were already taken, so we figured, we'd just get take out. I'm guessing the dine-in orders were made as priority because we waited a full hour before our food was ready. Rice usually takes about 20 mins to make, maybe just a little longer to steam? I was thoroughly confused on what took so long. It was also really uncomfortable waiting for our food. The restaurant was so tiny and packed with tables/people, there was no standing room, and it was chilly outside, so we hung out in a corner by the doorway..which meant that everyone stared at us while they ate. My date ended up being a door holder for everyone as they came in went for the full hour. Honestly, they should probably take out 1-2 tables to make more standing/waiting room...or offer to text/call us when our food was ready. All in all, if your'e a local in the area, and you're too lazy to cook, this could be a good takeout option, just make sure you're realistic with how long the wait would take. read more
