For a town that's all about sports, you would expect there to be a solid sports store in town! Unfortunately this is the only sports store in town and it's not an REI or Dick's in size, variety or quality. The selection is very limited in this store. The store is small in comparison to other sports stores, but packed to the gills in the limited space! For women, I think the store is even more limited in variety. The other disappointing thing at this store is the lack of contact with employees: I wasn't even greeted at the store when entered by the cashiers. Lastly I think the brand quality is poor, for women the shoe selection seems to consist of the cheaper shoes of a given brand. With that said, I appreciate having a sport store in town to get the basics for my sports needs. read more

Don't get caught without 1. For your basic needs in all your sporting Goods needs, Big 5 does carry and good selection. I has a customer would like see some more displays of their merchandize open up and set up,rather than in a box. Maybe in the future a bigger store would be very helpful. I went to Big 5 with my husband as he needed to pick up some items. While he was getting his stuff I was walking around. Found these cute little portable lanterns that were on sale for $2.99. So I decided to pick up five. So I could put one in each of our cars in the emergency kit and have a couple around the house in the event of an emergency. When I get up to the counter to pay for them the cashier rang them up at $9.99. I tell her they're on sale for $2.99. Another employee Michael says oh where did you find them let me double check. I walked him over and showed him and he advised me that they were miss marked. I said OK are you still going to give it to me at the marked price he said let me call my manager. The manager said all we can do is give you the lowest sale price of $6.99. I advised him that is unacceptable, and asked for the name and # of the manager whom he spoke with, he gave it to me and I walked (purchasing nothing). I would give negative stars if I could. Was here today but apparently unless you brought a female companion with you the all male staff refused to help you. I waited for 35 mins, unlike couples who waited 2-3 mins, with $400 of merchandise for a size in my hand but Brandon the manager helped every couple in the store but me. Hope he enjoys his merchandise on the floor. He even looked directly at me three times and still walked back into his mirrored office. The absolute worst service ever!!!!! we needed to purchase a treadmill and stopped by. What is this place?? Inside we are assaulted by a huge display of beanie babies.I am not talking about the regular beanies, but the ones with the big round soulless eyes which seem to follow you around the room. we find our way to the back of the store which is full; think hoarder house, of balls accessories, clothing and of course those scary beanie monsters. We are greeted by a nice guy who wanted to be helpful, unfortunately it was his first day, so all he could do was get his manager. We asked if they carried treadmills. he said yes, and points to a poster display with pictures of them and walks away. We purchased a ping pong table from Big5 and they were great in the sale and helping us load it in the truck. After I put it together the next day we realized one of the net posts was stripped and would not hold tension on the table. I brought only the net posts back with me as everything else was in great condition. Initially one supervisor stated I would need to call the manufacturer to get a replacement which could take 2 weeks. I politely let him know I bought the table the day before and was just trying to save us all the anguish of dismantling it and bringing the entire table back for an exchange for just a net post that wouldn't tighten. He agreed with the logic and grabbed his supervisor which then provided me an even exchange for the replacement net posts for no charge. I was happy with the service and would absolutely visit the store again. read more

I remember Big 5 being "The Store"... in the early 90's! What happened since then? Their business model just never caught up with the times I suppose. This location reminds me of an outlet store with left over seasonal merchandise, but expensive! Prices are generally more expensive compared to what you can purchase on Amazon/eBay, but if you need it now... Big 5 "may" have it. Their inventory is the bare basic to get by without giving consumers a large selection of things to choose from. I came here twice for bogey boards and they are so limited in types and styles. Just a tiny corner wall for 2 dozen boards. Overall, just the feeling of being in the store isn't welcoming. I want to get in and out as soon as possible. Compared to Dick's where you feel like you're in Sports-Disneyland! read more

Congratulations Big 5, you have made my very short list of places I will never shop in again. A true distinction. I have shopped there 3 times in the last couple of months. Mostly for Christmas stuff and odds and ends for my boys sports interests. All three times I shopped were mediocer at best, but this last time pushed me over the edge. As I was checking out a boy came in and handed in an application. He thanked the manager and left. Then the manager proceded to talk trash about the kid who had just handed the application in with the next customer in line. I was outraged not only because of the gross lack of basic customer service skill, but because this was the manager for cryin out loud. It seems that the kid's biggest fault for assuming that he would want to work for Big 5 were his looks. The manager was talking trash about the poor kids looks. But even more appaling is when I confronted the manager he looked at me like a dead fish. No doubts the trash talking continued after I left, but at least I know I did the right thing. To add to this monstrocity is the fact that the time before this incident a similar thing happened. A woman had come in with a return and gone to look for something to exchange her previous purchase with, when the same manager insisted on inspecting and voicing very loud opinions about his doubt that the customer was being truthful about not using the goods. She had purchased the items less than 24 hours previous. That time I didn't say anything because it was Christmas and everyone knows that retail workers have a tendency to be surly around that time. On a rating of the store itself, I would still encourage shoppers to go elsewhere. They have a very limited selection of everything rather than being well stocked in the essentials. The place was crowded and dirty and there were hardly any patrons present. I am having my brother return the purchase I made while observing this last incident and I will happily drive to Moorpark to Dick's Sporting Goods. read more

There was a serious lack of winter gear. I guess they got cleaned out recently already this season. Staff was friendly and offered to call other locations if I wanted something in particular. I needed snowboarding pants and of course waited til the day I was going to the mountain to shop for some. They had a few on sale but nothing good or my size. The dressing room had a cool lock on the inside of the door that worked by touching a button, no handle or latch... that's pretty much the only reason why I wanted to write this review. I can't see clear to give them a two star review. This place is sad, truly. It has such good potential given that Simi doesn't have any good general sporting goods stores, but apparently the Corporate office doesn't care enough to make this place what it could be. Management only has so much control over things; however, their merchandising is awful, their service is non-existent, and their staff (if you can find them), isn't knowledgeable - those are things they onsite managers do have control over but apparently they don't know what to do. If you're desperate, you might get lucky and find what you're looking for, otherwise it's over to Moorpark or Porter Ranch for a bigger store with people who will actually help you. I've shopped at the Big 5 store in Simi on several occasions when I need basic outdoor supplies like fuel, seam sealer, laces, Snow Seal or socks. However for anything more than sundries, it's just not up to par. Big 5 is the quintessential generic big-chain retailer which attempts to cover as many bases as possible. They have sporting goods which cover everything from kayaking, skateboarding, basketball, camping, bicycling, hiking, tennis, skiing, surfing, shooting, etc... By spreading themselves so thin between the various facets of "sports", they have little space for a lot of great stuff in any one genre. In addition, the quality of their gear is only about average. For camping and hiking, they carry the standard family brands like Coleman, Kelty, JanSport and Wolverine, however they do not carry much if anything from MSR, Mountainsmith, SMC, Vasque or Asolo. For the average car-camper, this is fine. However for the advanced outdoorsman and adventurer, why bother? I still come here on occasion to shop around for that perfect thing I don't have yet, or to restock on consumables, however for serious hiking, climbing, backpacking or camping gear, I much prefer REI or Sports Chalet. read more

This is one of the smaller Big 5 stores. Aisles are narrow; merchandise are crammed neatly in tight spaces. Employees in the shoe department are generally helpful and pleasant. Cashiers are a mixed bag; some are friendly; others clearly would rather be elsewhere and don't like their job. There are some good bargains here, especially for shoes. Availability of merchandise in my size is sometimes hard to find at this location. Overall, there are few sporting goods stores left so I am glad Big 5 is still in business. read more

I was shocked with my recent shopping experience at BIG5 in Simi Valley. This is a review of my experience with the manager and the return policy as explained by Andrew, the manager that responded to help me. I had just purchased a pair of COLEMAN PAVER ST workboots. I wore them almost 5 days a week before they broke. These are steel toe boots with a synthetic upper. They usually sell for $69.99 but were on sale for $27.99. 19 days after purchase one of the metal lace eyelet hooks broke. The next day I brought the box and the receipt to BIG5 for an exchange. Even after wearing them for three weeks the boots were still a bit uncomfortable so I even considered upgrading them to a more expensive style and paying the difference. Now the problem. I entered the store and spoke with the cashier who paged the manager, Andrew appeared to help me. I showed him my receipt but he did not even look at it. He looked at my boots and said he couldn't refund my money OR exchange them because the BIG5 policy allowed returns if the product was in "like-new condition". I made it clear that I did not want a refund but wanted to exchange or upgrade and I would pay the difference. He said it didn't matter. I asked what the time period for this policy was and he replied "indefinite", as long as the product was in like-new condition. No receipt was necessary. Baffled of course I asked for an explanation. What good is a warranty with no expiration if the product has to be returned in like-new condition? I wasn't complaining about discoloration, scratched uppers, worn soles or damaged laces. I had worn the boots just 19 days and the metal eyelet had snapped making the boots almost useless. How much longer would it be before another eyelet failed (or worse)? Of course I purchased the boots to be worn, almost daily. These are COLEMAN ST workboots, not JIMMY CHOO gold sequined stilettos. Andrew told me he would do me a favor and allow me to exchange or return my boots. After looking at the alternatives I chose to make an exchange for a new pair of the same model boots. Once at the register Andrew came back to tell me how he is doing me a favor, that I seemed like a reasonable customer. He then tried to explain that some customers return/exchange badly wornout shoes purchased longer ago with a more recent receipt. Thats why he wasn't concerned about the date on the receipt. I thanked Andrew for allowing me to exchange my 3 week old boots for a new pair and asked him how long he thinks the new pair shold last before the eyelets break again, he couldn't answer. I asked if they should last 2 months, six months, or maybe a year. Still he couldn't answer. So what is the warranty on my COLEMAN ST boots? What is the BIG5 exchange/return policy? My receipt says nothing at all about returns or exchanges. I haven't worn my boots yet but I am confident that as long as I don't get them dirty, scratch the uppers or step on the soles Andrew will allow me to exchange/return them indefinitely. read more

Came in on Saturday to buy some equipment for my training. They were helpful and polite. They have a good selection and the prices here are reasonable. They were ultra slow on checkout, and the checker admittedly explain that Saturday was her third day. They seemed to have a lot of employees in this shop, like six or seven and only four customers, so even though customers outnumbered employees had to stand there and wait for about 10 minutes to get through the check out. Odd, seemed like they were not really interested in making any money. So 4-stars instead of 5-stars. read more

Think again before shopping at Big 5 Sporting Goods in Simi Valley. They advertise that their prices are competitive when in reality they are either over priced or at MSRP on their inventory. Today I went in to buy a fielders mask, which was marked $39.99. Amazon had the same item for $32.99. The store WOULD NOT price match the item. The employee stated they don't price match and even admitted to me that he didn't understand why the store had that policy. Go elsewhere folks.
