We brought our 7-year-old son to K1 Racing in Thousand Oaks specifically for their youth night,…read moreexcited for a fun family evening. Their own website clearly states to arrive at 6pm, with no mention of calling ahead, no reservation system, no waitlist. So that's exactly what we did. We arrived on time only to be turned away because the spots were already gone. Apparently there's an unwritten rule that regulars know to call ahead, information conveniently absent from their website. When we asked the general manager, Cameron, why this wasn't communicated anywhere publicly, her repeated response was essentially "we're popular", offered with the self-satisfaction of someone who sees no problem with the situation. No apology. No empathy. No acknowledgment that their website is actively misleading customers. Just a shrug and a reminder that this is "how you learn for next time." My son was in tears. What's most frustrating isn't the miscommunication, it's the attitude. A good manager finds a way to soften the blow, acknowledge the failure, and make a family feel heard. Cameron did none of that. When I pointed out that if calling ahead is policy, it should be stated publicly, she had no real answer, just more deflection about how popular they are. K1 may be too busy to care about losing one family's business, but we had been planning a birthday party there. That won't be happening. If you value clear communication and basic customer service, proceed with caution.

First race I placed low and then the second race, I finished in third place. You get the hang of it after a couple of races but overall, fun and they make sure you are safe. I would totally bring the boys out here and race each other.

(Half #18, 2015) I…read moreran Arroyo Creek last year and ran it again this year. Last year's highlights: "Simi Valley, California: home to Elite Sports' "Arroyo Creek Half Marathon." Tree-lined, shady, and completely serene, this very flat course begins at Rancho Simi Park and continues its out-and-back wind along the Arroyo Creek bike path. Ducks and herons alike share the creek as you make your way along the patchwork path upon its banks. Commencing at an early 7am, this refreshing run is enhanced further by the vigor and energy of the morning." Updates: If you are interested in gearing up for and running Elite Sports' 7-race Challenge, check my first review for info; however, since then, a couple new races have been added, so check the website. Anyway, I ran Arroyo Creek this year to accomplish just that, running seven of Elite Sports' nine half marathons. (Only two more to go!) Nevertheless, Arroyo Creek is easy and flat. Maintaining pace and PR-ing is completely doable and within reach. But what I also appreciated this year, something different from other Elite Sports races, was that the Half medals were separate from the 5k and 10k medals. Not to disparage any of the other runners--it's great to see so many people lacing up and getting out there--but receiving medals that reflect the courses you've run is special. I dig that.

Very pretty surroundings as we ran the Arroyo Creek path. We crossed several intersections which were being manned by police officers. They made sure traffic was clear for us. As with all of these elite sports races there was plenty of water stations offering water and gatorade. Everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Packet pick up available the day before and race morning. If you want to run this race next year, sign up early for the best price. Nice medal and shirt. Age group winners and chip timed tracking. 5k, 10k and half marathon races are an option.
