I purchased a pair of HOKA shoes from the REI store in Northridge. At the time of purchase, the staff strongly encouraged me to buy an REI membership and clearly told me that if the product had any problem within one year, I could return it for a full refund. After experiencing a problem with the shoes, I returned to the store expecting REI to honor what they promised. Instead, the store manager, Peter, refused to accept the return, despite the shoes having a legitimate issue and despite the membership guarantees that were explained to me at the time of sale. This experience makes it very clear that REI's "one-year membership guarantee" is misleading and unreliable. What was presented as a benefit turned out to be meaningless when I actually needed it. I feel deceived and misled. This kind of practice damages customer trust and reflects very poorly on store management. Be careful before purchasing an REI membership or relying on their return promises. Based on my experience, the guarantee is not honored consistently, and customers may end up feeling scammed. read more

Great place in the Devonshire Reseda plaza for all your outdoor needs. Whether you are going hiking, biking, running, camping etc, they have all you need. I usually come here for stuff I need for my races and they definitely do not disappoint in quality. Ample gels for long distance running and they also have Goodr sunglasses, which are top notch for outdoor races. Service is always great and if you become a member, you get discounts and other benefits. Plus they always sell stuff for a good cause, so you feel good as you spend. read more

Love REI! I get my camping, running, and biking supplies from REI. I especially like their bike service bc of the member discounts. For gears, I appreciate their return policy. I once got an REI brand hiking boot and after wearing it once, I needed to return it because shape of the boot gave me blisters through my socks. When i returned it, I was told that they keep track of how often something is returned. And I was one is many who returned that specific shoe so they ended up pulling it off the shelf. This just goes to show that they operate with integrity and stand by the products they sell. read more

I've been shopping here for over a quarter century. These days, the store is just too expensive for me. I go to Big 5 for anything I used to get at REI. I mostly use REI for bike repair services. The store is still great and the service too. I don't want to strike down the few brick and mortal stores left. And it is a beautifully organized store with a great selection. But something has definitely changed in the past 25 years. Just not the same for me anymore. read more

This was me and my boyfriend's first time inside a REI and we were looking to purchase one item in particular. The store is fairly large (two stories) and very well organized. Our poor experience began when we were checking out. The cashier was initially friendly, but became very pushy about signing us up for their membership. No matter how many times we said no, he kept asking, which unnecessarily extended our time at the register (which made sense why the line was long and slow). When he finally realized we weren't going to sign up, he continued pressing us for a reason why despite all the benefits included. It was honestly very annoying and could've been entirely avoided had he accepted our refusal from the start. Because of how aggressively they push the membership, I would recommend avoiding going into the store and ordering online instead. read more

Have to give a shout-out about Dave. - very professional about choosing the right type of e-bike. I love biking in Venice Beach but also stay on mountainous area , and biking on hills when going back to home can be exhausting. The store choosing the associate based on him also being an avid camper and biker is impressive. - advised the correct type of bikes , equipment and other gears which later were verified as well. This is one of the best REI locations/ branches. It has a great selection of outdoor items and seems to have everything I need whenever I need it (hiking shoes, sleeping bags, lanterns). There are no lines to get in. There are barely any lines for check out. There are no crowds. Great people. Large parking spaces. read more

It's getting cold and chilly again so I needed to fetch some light jackets and pants to keep me comfortable while at work. REI offers a variety of sports apparels, camping equipments, RV accessories and travel needs. Visiting REI made me feel like a kid in a candy store, I wanted to bring everything home and enjoy them all. I love their collection of winter apparels like jackets, so I got me one of those Smartwool jacket and Kuhl Renegade pants. This jacket was lightweight and very comfortable. I also picked up the merino wool thermals which were not only comfortable but also fashionable and light. The KuHl pants were perfect for the attire and comfort was the appropriate name of these pants, too. At REI, you can feast yourself with a variety of high-quality tools and equipment for your journeys, anywhere. In all, the staff has excellent customer service, they are kind, friendly and very knowledgeable about their products. They welcome you with their smiles and respectfully allow you to decide what you wish to purchase, in the process. Where else do you go for your needs, RIE is a place where you earn money while shopping and also benefit from their profit sharing component of business. read more

I use my wife's REI membership whenever I shop here (she doesn't shop here anymore) and we received the money back like we have every year and for some reason they won't let me use because the account is not in my name. Just a cheap way to try and force married people to have individual memberships to make more money. read more

I've been shopping here since my high school days, which was, well, quite a while ago. When they still had the rock wall as you entered. Feels smaller now and certainly not one of the largest (feeling?) REI's, but the staff has always been friendly and helpful. Our most recent visit was to the bike shop for a possible extension of my youngest's co-op bike. We were educated on the safer reasons for not trying to eek another year of life out of it, which was sound reasoning. In the end we would have bought an upgrade, well, except they didn't have any. Looking around the new bikes were scarce so we ultimately left empty handed. We previously bought a few bikes when living in Maine and that store's inventory was huge!! Either way, I always enjoy visiting REI- to reinvigorate my outdoor spirit and remind me why I used to rock climb. The smell of rock shoes nearly "roped" me in again. Until next time. read more

REI surpassed expectations during my first venture there. Even though I don't identify as outdoorsy, browsing through every product kept me engaged. Their expertise extends from hiking gear to camping and bikes. My initial reason for walking into the store was to check out their bikes for my son. It turns out that they have their own brand, which is pretty cool, and if you're a member, you receive additional discounts. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful; They informed of us a Memorial Day sale which I am definitely coming back for. I caught my eyes on their Yeti Coolers, camping chairs and snacks. The employee in the shoe department is a credit to this store. He really takes the time, measured my feet, listened to what I was looking for and helped me find a great pair of Hoka Cliftons. I remember he helped me the last time I came in looking for hiking boots and that visit was great as well. I went to both the Northridge store and the store in Woodland Hills. I was just trying to get my skis put together, correctly and for a good price. At both stores seemed like a hassle one couldn't do it, the other one quoted me a price that was twice as much as what I ended up getting it done at a actual ski shop. Which I thought it was gonna be just the opposite that it would be cheaper at the big Box store. I've always loved REI for their hard to find equipment for backpacking and such, but don't go here for Ski stuff, they made me feel like I was asking for a miracle not a simple, Ski package put together. Not the place I remember from the past. With all the sports stores that have closed, you'd think they would adopt a better ski supply.And service company, that could compete. read more

They are great and organized. I was able to make the purchase online and able to pick up at the store with minimal waiting in line. I like that they ask for the confirmation email as well as for ID for verification. When browsing the store, they had some shoes on sale. I received excellent customer service from the gentleman that was in the shoe department. Even though I asked for a specific shoe size, he still asked if he could measure my feet for shoe size. This was far better service than most of all of other stores nearby. Plenty of parking, in a plaza with several other businesses. Overall I will return to this location. I stopped by this REI store while my wife was studying on the outdoor seating area near Paris Baguette. I wanted to see what items they had here and also what was on sale. When I walked in a worker greeted me, I was surprise that this store is 2 floors. On the second floor it's mostly shoes and attires stuff. The bottom floor has more items like bikes, coolers, watches, clothing and etc. The store looks bigger inside and it's very welcoming. The store is kind of like a hidden gem inside this plaza. read more

This REI is a smaller location however their employees sure do know what they are doing! Parking is readily available. We came to find new running shoes and we got lucky to have Emily help us. She did something no other REI employee had done prior which was measure his foot. She gave us a few shoe recommendations based on the arch of the foot and what my husband stated was his desires. For years, I've been patronizing small independent Valley bike repair shops with the belief they would be cheaper and do decent work. Wrong! I've experienced sloppy gear adjustments, squeaky brake pads, and an improperly sized chain. The final straw was a Granada Hills shop that gave me attitude to replace a tube that they had just installed (defective valve stem). I can't remember the last time I've had to argue with a repair guy over something so dinky. Last week I had a flat and decided to try REI. They were cheaper than the small shops I've used with prices clearly stated. They also discovered the flat tire's tube was too small which may have contributed to the problem. Per their advice, I replaced my aging tires with new ones (including properly fitting tubes at no cost). With tax, it came to $170 which is a fair price. Their technician, Wendy, also went beyond the call of duty, cleaning up my chain and making some minor tweaks. So impressed with REI! I learned my lesson. read more

I was underwhelmed by the customer service here. My boyfriend and I were not greeted when we arrived, and it wasn't until we were in the store for sometime that either of us were approached by anyone to see if we needed any assistance finding anything. We were searching for water shoes, and hiking/river shoes for our upcoming trip to Hawaii. There are quite few sections here, based on your outdoor activity needs, and if you lack experience with identifying different shoes, clothing, items for the right activity, you will need assistance. Unfortunately they did not have any Women's sizes for the Teva sandal that I was hoping to try on and possibly purchase, and their water shoe selection was scarce. The lack of customer service solidified that any purchases I do decide to make would be online. I took a few photos of some items that I might need to research for later. Fran who is at the front register has awful service and should not be helping customers. She's not welcoming when you walk in, acts like you're bothering her. Everytime I go to this REI, I am always greeted and asked if I need any help at all. The service is great here and there is a wide variety of clothing, equipment, and gear. You can always find something special in the clearance section, but what they have on shelf is good quality too. I recently got my skis waxed here for free and they do a great job at it. I enjoy just looking around when I enter REI, but end up buying at least 1-2 items when I leave. If you are looking for camping equipment, clothing, snow gear, etc., check REI out! read more

Great customer service. Came by twice in the past two weeks. Once, to search for new hiking shoes. And again, to pick the right insoles. Each time, the staff was very patient and helpful. They made buying insoles easy. None of the demo items worked for me (Superfeet are too hard on my arches). They let me open a couple boxes of other brands from the shelves until I found the perfect fit. They do have limited stock right now (due to pandemic disruptions and increased demand for outdoor goods) but their website offers free shipping. I found a pair of hiking shoes that I really liked and just ordered them online. I had to order twice since the first pair was too big. Luckily, you can return online items at their stores which is what I did. Overall, REI is a really great company. They have a lifetime membership with discounts. They really stand behind their products with an excellent return policy (which includes used items if you're really unsatisfied). It's there to help people find the best products for them so please don't abuse it. It's also easy to make returns at any store, regardless of where the item was purchased (online, by phone, or at any other store location). Additionally, the company is known to treat its employees really well. Skip Amazon, at least for your outdoor needs. As far as convenience goes, REI is totally comparable. They have great discounts (the hiking shoes I bought were on sale at REI and full price on Amazon). Their return policy is better and they care more about your satisfaction. read more

CURTIS is the man! I got a bike seat post stuck inside the mental tube of my bike and hadn't been able to ride it. Took it to another bike shop and they weren't able to get it out. Took it to Curtis at the Northridge REI bike shop and within 15 minutes, he had it out and installed a new bike seat for me!!! I've had nothing but the best of experiences with this location. From just overall atmosphere & cleanliness, to inventory, to an incredibly friendly and helpful staff, this location has it all. It's one of those stores where I will just roam around to take it all in & wonder about all the possibilities their inventory has for whomever buys them. It's just a fun shopping experience. I just want to spend some extra time on the staff though. As mentioned before, they're nothing short of the best. They treat me & every other customer based on my observance as if they were your friend & not just a customer. You can really tell that everyone working there loves the outdoors & wants to share their love with everyone they can. It just doesn't feel like they're seeing their time there as a job. And I appreciate that. In all, I know prices can be a bit higher at a store like REI, but the great experience I know I am going to get while there makes me more prone to shop here than a cheaper store. read more

I love shopping at REI. There are so many cool things you can buy there. It's great to shop here when there is a sale. Because everything is kind of expensive. But the majority of the stuff is good quality stuff. Super great for hikers. Lots of great stuff for climbers. And much more. Although everybody tries to be very helpful in the store, once in a while, you will come across a person who had a bad day. Perhaps that's what happened to the lady who is helping us. It does not cost much effort and does not cost any money to smile at people. That's all we wanted. we know what we came for. We know what we are shopping for. I was returning a tent and exchanging a backpack and she made me feel so bad about it that I wanted to leave the store ASAP. Came In as an audit, to see if I would of been asked if I needed help. I've came in before for the same reasoning and wasn't asked if I needed help. Today, same issue. I'm sure this isn't the norm at Rei (right?) I wasn't greeted at the entrance and After walking back and forth near a huddle of employees talking about what they are taking on their camping trip, not one employee asked if I needed help. I was looking for small collapsible lamps which they didn't have in stock. Now again, I'm sure this doesn't happen to everyone, but when an Caucasian American walks right by them, the same as I did, and they ask if he needs help then that's how I knew it was because of my skin color.
