Remember when elitist clubs would treat paying customers waiting on line with disdain on purpose? That aesthetic is still alive here, even in the Covid-19 era. With several people standing randomly apparently waiting to pick up their orders. I entered to see what was available, only to be rudely told to wait outside. There are no signs indicating capacity. When I asked the customer limit, I was told "4", even though there were six other people besides myself, with no one visibly on line to place an order. Once three other people exited, I entered, with another person following me. That person was greeted while I was rudely told to adjust my mask and to wait on the side. At that point, I left in disgust. Having bought croissants here previously with disinterested but at least acceptably benign service, I would say they were on par with the new French bakery on Court Street in Cobble Hill, but not enough to justify the higher price premium and condescending service. read more

I can't believe I'm only rating this 3 stars. The truth is, I was a tad disappointed. I wanted so much to love it, but alas...it left me hoping for more. When we arrived (between 11 and 12 on a Monday), their display case was practically empty. All the breads and pastries they boasted on the website were nowhere to be seen. Thankfully, the sandwich I wanted (squash and white bean) was available. I must say, I didn't have a STRONG desire for that sandwich, but as it was the only vegetarian option, I was just glad it was there for me. It was edible, but nothing special. It might have been better if it were pressed, toasted, or at least heated up. My latte came in a to-go cup. They didn't even ask me if I were staying or not, but I saw other people around me with cute mugs. I thought the espresso was decent, but a little harsh. Maybe bakeries just aren't my thing. After visiting Bien Cuit, you'll never look at pastries the same way again. Is it possible to love something without even trying it yet? That's how I felt about this little bakery. To preface this review, I have a short story... As most of my family/friends know, I hardly ever watch TV. But when I do it's usually a show about food of some sorts. This brings me to my next point: "Unique Sweets" featured Bien Cuit on one of their episodes and whenever I watch these shows, I make sure to make a mental note to visit ESPECIALLY when it's close by. Just from the images and descriptions, I knew I had to visit. Bien Cuit, meaning "well done" is certainly appropriate. All of the desserts here are carefully crafted down to the very last bite. Upon arrival, the storefront is simple/minimalist and reflects the rustic nature of the inside. Although its spacious, there isn't much seating to go around. I was there on a mission. My friend was cooking me dinner that night and I can never go empty-handed. So I asked the girl at the counter for suggestions (she was very helpful) and I ended up deciding on three pastries: -Huckleberry Danish with Yuzu Curd, Huckleberry Jam: Flaky, tart and very flavorful. Those berries certainly packed a punch. This was my wildcard if you will. It's hard to describe if you haven't had this fruit before, so take a chance on it. It's good. -Apple Cardamom Danish with Pureed Apple and Cardamom Strudel: Second favorite of the night. I'm a HUGE fan of apple desserts so this was a win-win. The unique pairing of flavors certainly works. -(The true star of Bien Cuit) Chocolate Almond Croissant/Twice-baked with Brandy: If you have to pick an item, CHOOSE THIS. You can thank me later. It's everything a croissant should be -- flaky, soft, buttery, nutty (from the almond paste)... you get the idea. And the fact that its baked in brandy? Say no more. It's a true showstopper. Breads, breads, breads! I traced this place down from a wonderful brunch experience at Estela that they served the best sausage, avocado and runny egg sandwiches. The bread itself was so good that I shamelessly called Estela to ask for the name of the bakery. So here I am embracing the heavenly good smell in the store! The cute bakery shop is spacious to hold ~8 two-seats tables (4 by the window, 4 by the wall). They proudly serve Joe's coffee at reasonable prices. I ordered the sourer sourdough--Miche (Blended Rye & Wheat Flours, 68-Hour Fermentation). The bread is hearty and flavorful! Its so good that I can eat it as a dish without butter/gem. But crust is deadly hard get a saw to cut it (joking! But you do need a good bread knife). Other pastries all look very delicious with nice presentations. Been here a few times. Even though the pastries are baked fresh daily, they don't actually taste that fresh. Not sure why, maybe it's the humidity control, but the croissants are the slightest bit stale. Also, the chocolate one has very unevenly distributed chocolate. Runner & Stone's pastries are far better. Also, they have rotating coffee beans. However, the last time I went, I asked for a coffee, and they said they don't do brewed coffee anymore despite it being on their chalkboard menu (not sure if they meant they were out for that day? that week? forever? It was only 2pm so who knows...). Ended up getting an Americano (which is also unhelpfully not listed on the menu as an option, even though the barista said it's a common alternative to the brewed coffee). Just confusing overall. I would not recommend the almond poppy seed because it's more like a brioche roll than it is a croissant. No layers or flakey anything. Minimal almond filling. Could be good for someone who wants more of a brioche roll. Chocolate almond croissant was tolerable. The croissant itself was flakey. The almond paste/frangipane was ok but it was too runny and too sweet. They should be more of a paste than oozing almond+sugar. But if that's your thing, you might enjoy their pastries. I love trying new coffee shops and was excited to try this one based on the rave reviews on Yelp (and also because this places promotes itself based on a joke of a one star yelp review "coffee tastes like licking the wall") I tried both the iced latte and a hot latte but both came up short in terms of espresso strength. It's a pretty weak latte and I should've taken the hint when the person ordering in front of me requested his latte be made "extra strong". They were all out of almond croissants when I got there (430PM) so I was unable to try one. For all you coffee heads, they use BQE coffee beans. I wouldn't recommend this place but if you're desperate for some caffeine, this will suffice! read more

My fiancée and I happened upon this place as we strolling down smith street. It has a very nondescript entrance. Food: I had the goat cheese and artichoke croissant and my fiancée had the eclair. They were both quite delicious, something that is definitely try again. To drink I had the iced black tea and my fiancée had the summer spritzer. Drinks were as expected Service: service was okay, not very friendly or chatty but they got the job done. I'd give them a three star on the service. I have come here at least 10 times since I live nearby. The guy behind the counter is so rude. He will avoid eye contact and then roll your eyes if you ask him a question. He is usually the only person there so I guess he just doesn't give a f. The bread is amazing, but the pastries are over done. I've gotten pastries that are borderline burnt. Serve food on its proper plate -Dessert forks for dessert and cakes not massive food forks -more room to pick up your beverage at the pickup bar (perhaps move some of the clutter, put sugar in smaller container will give you room for tops which take up massive space) The small details go a long way. They are known for their bread, but I was in the mood for their pastries which is supposedly baked daily. They have two flavours in the fall category and I chose the fig Danish. For a Danish, it did not taste fresh, sweet or soft. It was actually pretty tough and rather bland taste. This is my first and only strike. I really wanted to give this place another chance so I went to buy their tart. This was a bit more expensive ($8) than I would have liked spending on a tart, but it was really well done. It wasn't too dry and it kept it's form when I was eating it. Overall, based on two desserts, an average place. I hope whoever reads this doesn't buy from Bien Cuit. I made an order with Bien Cuit a few weeks ago, and not everything was delivered in the order. There was a note written on the receipt that substitutions had to be made. If I am told that there is a FOUR (4) day lag time to produce the order, which is what Bien Cuit tells you before you make an order, wouldn't you think that when you get the order, the entire order would be there? Well, I received substitutions. Why were substitutions made? I guess because they didn't make enough. Bien Cuit should have been able -- like any regular day before Covid-19 -- to make every order accurate in a FOUR-day lag time. Wouldn't you think? However, this didn't happen. And what makes matters worse is that the pastries I received were not even baked properly. The chocolate almond pastry wasn't even cooked to completion. It was raw inside. I understand that Covid-19 has put a lot more strain on people and companies. My own work and business has suffered too. But by buying pastries and a quiche, I wanted to support others, like Bien Cuit, and to give away this food to those who needed it. But obviously I could not give anyone uncooked food or pastry. I would not buy anything from Bien Cuit again. And I hope whoever reads this doesn't either. read more

I picked up a half miche from Bien Cuit in Grand Central Terminal on my way home from New York to Seattle. I am a craft brewer, home baker, and lover of great bread. Bien Cuit is "tres bien" - one of the best breads that I have ever had. The crust is substantial, textured, hard to tear and chewy. The bread itself is perfection - moist, soft, and velvety, a lovely contrast to the crust. Once on the plane, I was the envy of my seatmates as I ate Miche sandwiches of fresh lobster tail and flavorful Teleggio at the perfect temperature. It was heavenly! read more

Sandwiches may look pretty here on yelp and Instagram but they suck balls. The display for their sandwiches look like soviet era sparsely decorated medical supply cabinet. The sandwiches are pre-made taken out from the fridge below. You know what salmon does to bread and in the cold? The bread is good enough where I'll trust Bien Cuit with any baked good, despite the fact the chocolate buckwheat cookie left a little to be desired. Terrific bread, lovely chocolate croissant, great apple galette, incredibly dry and blah poppy seed croissant. The star deduction is two-fold: a rather hum drum selection, some rather overcooked looking almond-chocolate croissants (which we would have tried had they not clearly been burnt) and holy hannah, would you look at those prices! I'm not usually one to balk at the price of a good pastry as I know how much work goes into them, but $28 for a 6 inch diameter tart that's about 1 inch in height? You have to be joking. I was appalled. Or how about $8 for a teeny-tiny version of that same tart. Ludicrous. I know the rent must be sky high, but truly, this was beyond the pale. This will not be a regular go to bakery, both due to lack of great variety and the astronomical prices...if I couldn't bake decent bread myself, though, their artisanal loaves are truly terrific. I've been missing Paris lately, and no joke, the croissants and coffee at Bien Cuit give Paris a real run for its money! I ordered the almond croissant and mocha latte. The croissant was super fresh and flaky and the almond filling wasn't overbearingly sweet. You can see all the baked goods cooling straight out of the oven. What more could you want? I'm not a big coffee person (the taste is a bit too bitter for me. Sorry, everyone,) but I downed this latte. It was lightly sweet and frothy.
