The only reason I wouldn't go back here is because your clothing always smells like bacon grease or something when you leave. It takes a few washes to get the smell out. Our table was close to the door so they had a small heater to keep us warm, which was nice since it's the middle of winter! We ordered the pumpkin ravioli in brown butter with pecans which was on the small side--we all left pretty hungry and the brown butter sauce wasn't really up to par. A friend is a vegetarian and they had a lot of choices on the menu besides the ravioli, I think she settled on the sardines. I bought a gift certificate at a charity auction, so came in for a dinner with my partner. The room is nice and mellow. There are no table clothes so it has a casual feel. The color palette of dusty blue and brown is calming and contemporary. Service was good if a bit on the casual side, our server was young and friendly, but could develop a bit more sophistication in her interactions at the table. The food: all the dishes were on the salty side. Butterhead lettuce salad was merely okay -- I expected something more special for the $11 price. French onion soup du jour was good but unremarkable. The entree special of seared scallops with morel mushrooms and house-cured bacon over celeriac was a bit too savory -- the scallops were perfectly cooked but the strong bacon overpowered the mellow seafood flavor and overall made the dish seem too salty. Surprisingly, contrary to how it looks from the outside, inside atmostphere is quite romantic/nice. Servers are fast and nice, and I liked how simple and clean their menu is. We had chicken and clams, and I enjoyed both of the dish. It is on more traditional side in terms of incorporate "sophisticated/unexpected" flavor to dish, but sometimes I just want some good old american cuisin without the twist. read more

Looks pretty neat, I know, but the staff under-performs when it's busy. You may have to get your own fork and knife. It actually took 50 minutes for the food to show up. I was quite wow'ed and hung After we were shown a table by the window, and after we've actually sat down, a waitress came by and said she promised the table to another group. We really didn't want to sit by the window so we gladly accepted it, but what if we actually wanted the table? The waitress didn't even ask, she just wished us away. That's not an acceptable behavior, even in a street burger joint, and this is supposedly one of the finest places in that part of the Queen Anne avenue. I like a restaurant that focuses on what it does well, and really does a great job at it. This neighborhood gem has a handful of starters, about five mains, and four or five desserts where you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The chicken is some of the best chicken that I have had at a restaurant ... ever. The decor is simple and good for a casual night out with friends or a date night with a long-time significant other. If you want you can sit at the counter and watch the chef's prepare the dishes or you can sit at a table and enjoy a quiet meal with your companion. A lovely little joint in Queen Anne with some of the best roasted chicken I've experienced in Seattle. Their menu changes with the seasons to reflect available ingredients and the chef's creativity. This isn't a cheap dining but the food is well-prepared in a pleasing ambiance. I'd say it's a good date restaurant or for meeting friends over wine. If the weather is pleasant, sit by the windows and people-watch as you dine. Come early enough and parking isn't a problem. If you are a late diner, be patient. We stopped by Betty on our walk around Queen Anne. The food earned 4 stars, but there were a couple of things that were a bit off. Betty won our business off the street due to their happy hour specials on drinks and appetizers. We were seated and greeted by a nice server, but when we tried to order from the happy hour menu, we were told it only applied to those sitting at the bar. We didn't want to be a pain, so we stayed put, but I wish we were told this when being seated. The drinks we did order were really, really delicious so we ended up happy. We ordered bread and olive oil/balsamic. The bread was $1, which I thought was weird. When paying $20-30 for a meal, it seems like charging for bread is a bit silly. We ordered the heirloom tomato, mozzarella, and basil salad followed by the summer vegetable succotash. Both plates were out of this world good. The flavors were perfect and the portions were hearty. But back to the bread... When we finished our meal, our server asked "Can I bring you some extra bread for the leftover sauce?" Sure! That would be great. Not surprising, there was an extra $1 added to our bill. I'm not cheap and the $1 didn't matter of course. It just seems like a little thing and I would have easily upped my tip to cover the gesture, but maybe it's just me! I went to Betty when it first opened and I wasn't completely impressed with the menu, but the food and the service was fine. I have been back a few times but my most recent experience was amazing. It was a Sunday night and though there were plenty of tables we chose to sit at the bar. They are currently part of the 30 for $30 and the regular menu does seem more broad. The bartender greeted us immediately. I ordered the tequilla martini and fell in love. We ordered the grilled asparagas with egg and devoured the entire plate. I had the pine nut pesto halibut with PEA VINES which are by far my favorite green side dish but rarely find them on any menu north of the I.D. We also had the fried risotto balls which were just sinfully delightful. The bartender checked on us regularly and my drink was never empty. I love, love this place! My bf & I dined here twice and twice the experience has been phenomenal. I honestly feel everyone should not even bother going to Crow- that's racist or Toulouse Petite Kitchen & lounge that delivered major stop to the rest room. Any how back to the review. On both occasions we sat at the chef table. The hostess is extremely beautiful and has a golden soul. All the staff are attentive if I have to be honest. However, my two favorite are the chef brothers. Wow, not only are their amazing cooks but great conversationalist. Their ability to be open and inviting makes this outsider heart melt. The food is out of this world. I recommend anyone whose lucky to sit at the chef table to watch their preparation, something my boyfriend raves about. Our last meal here, my bf and I both ordered their steak and a bunch of oyster. Both entrée where outstanding. Too outstanding because we recently came back from a trip to NYC and at Strip House known for their steak. Sorry Strip house but the sauce, tenderness, and juiciness of the steak at Betty makes my mouth water more. Betty is just up the hill from where we live, and we finally gave it a try for dinner this Friday. While there are some quirks about its layout and operation, the food and drinks were solid. The quirks: If you enter from Queen Anne Ave. North, the door is so heavy and the entryway so unlit that the restaurant appears closed. It's not. Once you push past the heavy velvet curtain, there is a maitre'd station, but its placement seems temporary; it's not. If you visit the restroom during the meal, assuming you're seated on the Queen Anne Ave. side, instead of going all the way back, you want to weave behind what appears to be a more permanently placed maitre'd station. (It is, but it's not in use!) At any rate, the place is in need of an HVAC update: that heavy velvet curtain is necessary, as otherwise, if you are seated closest to the window (as we were) on the Queen Anne Ave. side, you will be blasted with arctic air. But anyway! The food. The grilled octopus is by far the best starter, unless you're a fan of Variations On Cold Meats And Cheese. The sauce was zesty (there was a lot of lemon zest, literally), the fingerling potatoes went well, and the octopus was tender, with a good char. The portion is ample, too -- I shared it with two hungry young men and there was enough: it's not a single tentacle with a brush of sauce. Brother 2 and I both ordered the Betty Burger; it's nothing to write home about, except maybe the orange (non-ketchup) dipping sauce that came with the fries -- like mustard, but milder and better. Brother 1 got the lamb shank and felt it was solidly prepared, perfectly pleasant. Drinks were also good (though $12-14), classic cocktails with some futzing. I've been to Crow before, so for my boyfriend's birthday I thought Betty would be a good choice, especially after I saw his favorite, Duck, on the menu(he loved Crow's rendition). I made a reservation for 6 on a Sunday, and boy am I glad I did, that place was packed within minutes of us showing up. There are lots of seats at the bar, and in front of the kitchen, and about 15 tables for 2-6 people scattered throughout. They had a Dine around Seattle menu, 3 courses for $30, but neither of us ordered off of it. We started with the cured meat platter, which was good, I loved the almonds, it was a nice touch. The salami was my favorite. My boyfriend had the Duck with sausage and lentils, which he loved. He said the Duck was fantastic, and I sneaked a bite or two of the lentils, and they were fantastic too. Just when I am convinced I don't actually like lentils, Betty goes and cooks them well and has me liking them again. I ordered the Betty Burger and Fries(Boring, but you know me). It was very good. The meat was a bit too rare for my liking, simply because it made the burger harder to eat, but it was quite tasty none the less. I had a hard time trying to order off the small, but well thought out menu. I know the chicken is good, but the herbed goat cheese ravioli, the wild boar ragout, and the special for the evening of corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and soda bread caught my eye too. The menu changes seasonally, so make sure and check before to decide to head over. They also have an extensive menu of 20 wines for $20. We didn't order any, but I love the option. My boyfriend really loved his house cocktail, and the beer menu, like the food menu is small, but well thought out. Great for a special occasion, or just a date night. I hate to say it, Betty, but if you don't shape up, you will forever stand in the shadow of your better-looking, more popular brother Crow. Admittedly, I heart Crow. So my expectations for Betty were probably inflated. And yes, Betty should be reviewed on its own, but it's hard to ignore the fact that the two places are related. I would at least hope for a comparable experience from one to the next, but no. It was almost as if the two had nothing to do with each other. Like they were long-lost cousins three times removed, maybe. My main beef with Betty is the small menu. I love a small menu with just four or five choices per category. Makes things easy for the diner. But if you're going to go that route, everything on the menu MUST be fantastic. There can't be an "eh" item at all. Unfortunately, with the exception of the steak frites and my glass of malbec, I kept saying to my husband, "I think we ordered the wrong things." From drinks to the appetizer to one of the entrees, I felt mostly disappointed in our choices. They weren't bad, just not stellar. I was also frustrated by the inconsistent prices. Steak frites = $19. GREAT! Morel risotto = $18. Not so great. I get that morels are expensive, but the dish also featured crimini mushrooms, which are pretty dirt cheap when it comes to mushrooms. How can a giant steak with a mountain of fries cost just $1 more than the risotto, which skimped on the morels? What's up with that? I'm willing to give Betty another chance, because I really think she has the potential to outshine Crow in the end. Great location, great ambiance, great space. Adequate service. Started off with the Counterbalance for a pre-dinner drink with Absolut Ruby Red, fresh lime juice, Patron Citronge and a lime wedge. It was absolut perfect! Not loaded with sugar or weighted down with too much citrus. I was prepared to have 8 more, but my friends and I switched over to wine. Tortilla soup was perfect as well. Just enough spice and hit the spot before my meal b/c I was starving. Had the house sausage and crispy duck over frisee and french lentils. Home run there. The server encouraged me to get this dish and I am so glad he did. Dessert was super delish. Had the Napolean and the chocolate torte. Napolean comes with a raspberry coulis, which was not listed on the menu. Raspberries and I are not BFF...always leads to a speedy trip to the local ER. Our server was more than accommodating and swapped the raspberry Napolean culprit out for one without death sauce. Table service was more than 5 stars. It was definitely a 10. After reading the other reviews, I wanted to find out if "good" meant "dull." Or if the images of little sister and wallflower truly had a hint of flirt. Plus I wanted to see those morels that Andrew E. yelped about. Betty is good and nice and the perfect little sister to Crow. But she doesn't have that hidden blade in her garter that (I believe) a restaurant needs to survive the line-up of Queen Anne's drag yet. But I think she can work her charms into five stars sometime. 1) Petite, but strong: The menu is small but not limiting, providing you with a wide range of options, all combining a few quality seasonal ingredients. From the cream-based corn chowder with red pepper coulis to the squid over steamed artichokes, there are a range of delicious options. I hope the menu adds a few risky undercurrents for balance. 2) Tete a Tete: Betty's counter provided us with cozy seating and an ample view of their kitchen at work. Watching the cooks sprinkle herbs, plate oysters, and calmly work through the weeds was a pleasure. It felt familiar, calm. Servers were available, yet not hovering. 3) Smirk: The roast chicken was served up over chopped asparagus and white beans. Perfect for summer. When the time came to eat the tiny drumstick, I expressed my joy at the crisp flavoring and succulent flesh. The chef smirked in delight - it was nice to see them enjoying their customers' appreciation. Meep. 4) Promise: Despite the entertaining personification of Betty, when it comes down to it, the restaurant is just a young business with solid dishes in a great location. wow, it's been a couple years since i've been here. i think it's because it doesn't have something unusual on the menu that makes you want to come here. it just executes normal items really well. i recommended we come here for a business dinner and as usual, i was late. sheesh. i need to learn to leave on time. in a rush to order, she rolled with the salmon and i had the steak frites, which i love. as before, i did feel we were a little rushed to order, but it wasn't overwhelming. she loved the salmon, which looked like it sat on a bed of legumes. as always, i loved my steak frites. very marbled and juicy...and once again, there were way too many frites. staff was friendly and excellent. the only thing i dislike about betty is trying to find a place to park the vehicle. read more

One of the best Manhattans in Seattle. Srsly. Basil Hayden's perfect (dry + sweet vermouth if you're not in the know) and a twist of orange. No nasty maraschino cherries. No cloying sweetness spoiling the bourbon. You will order it. Ok, now for the food: I had the tortilla soup and lamb shank with polenta. Both were excellent--and that's saying a lot because I'm not usually a fan of lamb. My friend had the duck and italian sausage, which was also excellent--just the right amount of spiciness and fennel. For dessert we split a delicious chocolate torte and a "napoleon" (which seemed more like a big blob of cream between some wafers, but was quite tasty). I don't know why she ever agrees to go out with us, because it is always the same: too slow, too expensive, too salty, one dollar should be enough tip. This time she didn't grouse about the tip, although she'd been skipped on the water service (as I had), but she remarked on the friendliness of the people there. Service was timely. I also ordered a to-go meal for my wife who wasn't with us, they timed it perfectly. On a separate check, in fact, which they had no problem doing. They got us in during Seattle Restaurant Week, which was awesome. I had the Wild Boar spaghetti (I think they had a fancier name for it, but that's what it was), which my brother also had. He didn't like it at first, but liked it at the end. I noticed no improvement, but I liked it from the get-go. Brother had a point though, he would have had no problem making any of those dishes at home, except the scrumptious desserts. The food was oversalted. The salt was pretty pervasive, and that's really my only knock on the joint. Takeaway: I recommend that you try it. Betty may have overtaken Zoe as my favorite restaurant in Seattle. Betty was the last place I ate in Seattle before I moved to Chicago. I fell in love that night. And I finally got back to Seattle this weekend, and Betty was the first place I came back to. So glad I did. The atmosphere is awesome--upscale food, yet with the comfortable diner feel and none of the upscale pretention. Cozy, yet not cramped. Plenty of tables and a large bar area. The open kitchen where you can watch the chefs work their magic. And people watching out on Upper Queen Anne is quite fun, especially in the warm weather when the windows are open. The food is divine. Pan-roasted chicken--let me tell you, it doesn't get any better than this (and SUCH a huge portion--mmm leftovers). And the lamb falls off the bone. The fish of the day is always grilled perfectly. While the menu isn't expansive, it's eclectic enough that all of your dining companions can find something to suit their taste--meats, pastas, seafood. The wine, while not sheets long, has some excellent old world and new world reds. You may be unfamiliar with a lot of the bottles, but the servers are excellent in the recommendations. Speaking of wine, what truly blew me away this past visit was that our server made a recommendation--and it was the LEAST expensive bottle on the list!! I'm used to servers giving you a $70-80 recommendation. Nope, she came right out and recommended the $25 bottle of wine, and it was extremely good. I don't think I'll ever have that experience again. Now for some tips: -Betty now takes reservations, and I would definitely recommend, though the place doesn't get busy until 7 or so. -They also have a happy hour from 5-6:30 (must sit at the bar) with some really great specials. -Parking is pretty easy (despite it better Upper Queen Anne). There are a lot of meters and some free spots scattered back a little ways. -Prices: Entrees range from about 17-25 (for the fish of the day). Bottles of wine: 25-80ish. Went to Queen Anne on our way to the 5 Spot but ended up going to Betty. The outside drew us in and the warm and inviting inside pulled us through the doorway and into the bar for a bite to eat. The menu was small...the wine menu far surpassing the food menu. I ordered the spinach and ricotta ravioli and my friend ordered the cheeseburger. The ravioli were perfect...pasta was soft and the inside had just enough ratio of veg to cheese. It was topped with a light sauce with chanterelle mushrooms and shaved Parmesan cheese. The burger was cooked to a perfect medium accompanied by the normal burger accouterments plus the most perfect fries I have had in awhile. I would definitely go back but get drinks somewhere else. We had two of the appetizers, and I had the roasted chicken and veggies... fantastic! Dessert was a banana chocolate cake, also excellent. And the price for two appetizers, two entrees and one desert was much more affordable than many places I have been to in the downtown area. Now for the con: the atmosphere was "modern", which basically felt impersonal with poorly-chosen music. Betty and Crow are sisters, similar to how my sister and I are sisters. I'm broadway and she's 5th avenue, I'm thrift stores and she's nordstroms, Crow is shabby and betty is chic! I love both of them for their own reasons... It was a pretty rock solid performance. The mussels with house cured bacon were pretty much stellar. The duck confit salad was perfect with a light vinaigrette to counteract the richness of the duck and hazlenuts to give it an awesome crunch. Beet salad I was told was awesome (since I think beets have the density of mars I didn't really eat it). Reading the dessert menu it seemed fabulous and if I hadn't of eaten way to much already would have gotten a few desserts to sample. Will have to go back for that. Down side? It was pretty loud, my bf and I sat at a table thinking we would get more time to talk but it was just too darn loud to hear each other. I actually live right above this place, so it couldn't be more convenient, but EVERY time I eat here it's a horrible experience. The Steak I had was fatty and every dish seemed to be swimming in some kind of broth. I guess they're trying to be fancy with things, but it's just hurting the food. Service is slow and then when you're dying to leave they are slow to give you your check. And it's a small place so you'd think they could manage. Overly expensive and pretentious is something that is a dime a dozen in and around Queen Anne, but this one's not one that makes it worth the money. read more

I've been fortunate to been able to give Seattle many chances. That has led me to explore some of the many great spots in Seattle, and some that have been not so on par. We stepped into Betty's after cruising all around downtown, not knowing what to eat because we were afraid to know what was good. We had never been to Betty's so we thought, "why not?" After seeing the menu limited (I believed it changes daily), we decided we needed to head somewhere else for variety. BUT, the tomato basil soup (soup of the day) I had was AMAZING, the balsamic reduction gave it the perfect kick and the fries were amazing. The Saturday in the Park cocktail was more delightful than mine which was a concotion of Prosecco, Patron Citronage and OJ. This place could be promising.
