Did you know that the original Bernini is in Tokyo? I DID NOT! But it all makes sense. The owners of this restaurant run it as how I would expect a Japanese fine-dining restaurant in JAPAN to be- classy, good service, aesthetically pleasing food, and smaller portion size.
The decor and ambiance is LOVELY. Straight-up feeling fly, and I am a firm believer that ambiance boosts one's dining experience. Even if the food is subpar, I'll be nice and give it 2 or 3 stars if I'm eating in a pretty restaurant with good service.
That being said, I don't have to be nice to Bernini because the food was very good!!! Yay good food and pretty restaurant!!! I made it a point to see what other yelpers recommended beforehand and this is what we ordered:
APPETIZERS
GRILLED SCALLOPS WITH EGGPLANT: where is the eggplant?? Also, only 5 scallops. But there were a lot of mixed greens served with this, and the scallops were cooked perfectly.
TUNA CARPACCIO WITH LEMON: YUMMY. Sashimi with capers, lemon and sundried tomatoes!! $19 though, kinda pricey.
PORCHETTA: I think I was expecting too much from this bc of the reviews but I honestly didn't think it was that great... I don't think it was the preparation or anything, maybe I'm just not a fan of porchetta in general. My dad liked it a LOT though.
ENTREES
PIZZA WITH TRUFFLE OIL, WALNUTS, MUSHROOMS, SAUSAGE. YOU MUST GET THIS PIZZA. I forgot what it was called, but you will know it- it is under the pizzas that don't have tomato sauce. It was delicious. The truffle oil really takes it to the next level.
BISMARC PIZZA- asparagus, soft-boiled egg, prociutto. Okay so if you've been reading my reviews you know how much I love eggs, especially yolky ones. Super stoked for this pizza and it was a huge let down. First of all, the egg was not truly soft-boiled. It was no longer yolky and cooked too much! The waiter gave me a spoon to spread the yolk with but how could I when the yolk was solid!! GRRR. Also, the tomato sauce was SO BLAND AND WATERY. You could tell they make their own sauce from scratch which is good, but it was literally like mashed up tomatoes with no seasoning. Meh.
BEEF RAGU- didn't try but was a win according to my grandpa
KING CRAB LINGUINI- I should've warned my mom that Yelpers said this entree was bland, but we decided just to try it anyway. IT IS DEFINITELY BLAND AND THERE IS MINIMAL CRAB.
GENOVESE LINGUINI- pesto/basil type sauce, with pinenuts, beans and asparagus. Looks pretty much vegetarian, but when we asked the waiter he said they use a beef broth so it's not entirely vegetarian. It was REALLY good though, probably my 2nd favorite.
SPAGHETTI WITH UNI- wasn't sure what to expect from this but it was delicious! The uni makes the sauce a bit rich, but it was delicioussss! Who knew adding sea urchin to spaghetti would make it so good?
DESSERT
Yes being fatties we had to try the desserts here...
PANNA COTTA WITH FRUIT AND WINE JELLY- YUMMY!!! My favorite!! It's basically a lighter, not super dense vanilla panna cotta with a thick layer of (wine?) jelly and fruits!!! I ENJOYED THIS A LOTTTT. It is kind of sweet though. But I like that! Haha
BUDDINO- caramel custard pudding, good flavor and not super dense.
HAZELNUT AND CHOCOLATE MOUSSE- probably the weakest dessert for me. Had a hint of coffee in there, Idk I just wasn't a fan. Underwhelming.
SERVICE
When I saw our server was "Christoff" I was scared bc I remember a previous review warned us about him... and I knew it was him bc I did get a weak Bruce Willis vibe from him. However, he was pleasant enough and we basically got all the service we needed. Just a warning though, for parties of 6 or more they will automatically add 18% gratuity. Also the manager nihonjin lady was really nice and sweet, but you could tell she kinda wanted to drift toward the other Japanese customers more. At least they didn't slack off knowing that they were going to get that 18% no matter what!
You get what you pay for! A bit pricey, but this is "fine-dining" we're talking about! Bernini probably could've won 5 stars from me, but my pizza was a disappointment. If only I hadn't ordered it... Oh well, next time I'll be back, I won't order that pizza and perhaps boost my rating :) read more
