I have moved with Bernard movers three times now, and they're a great service. My movers were Freddy, Mando, and Josh. Freddy has been my mover a couple times, and he's been really great. Some of the moves were pretty stressful, and he was very nice and calm. Each time I hired them they were on time, professional, and quick. I'm overdue to write this, but was happy enough with them that I decided to still make this review. Bernard was suggested to me by friends and I am happy I chose them. First, from the phone estimate, they were very honest and upfront on what the cost would be. I was just doing a simple move a few blocks away from a 1-bedroom to a 1-bedroom. The lovely lady on the phone didn't try and sell me or under estimate me on the cost, but rather told me what she honestly thought the costs would be, and indeed was right on target. Other estimates came in much lower, but I didn't trust who I was talking to and knew I was trying to be sold. The movers showed up literally, exactly, and to the minute of the time I was told. I was told 8:00am, 7:40am I had a call asking me if they should park in the front or back, and at 8:00am on the dot, they were ringing the buzzer. All three gentleman were just that, gentleman. Very friendly, polite and hard working. They moved very quickly, but didn't sacrifice any bit of quality with the way they wrapped the furniture and the care in not marking up the walls, etc. They were obviously professionals in the way they had their system down and who did what, and how they moved things. I would highly suggest them for short distance moves. Worth every penny. Especially since I was moving out of a top floor, fourth story walk up. read more

I moved a,week ago,it was a complicated move. First a full house of furniture,then a stop at the storage facility for another large pickup. The movers were great. it was Juan, Brian and Alex, a very professional crew. They were hard workers who took extreme care with my precious things. They took very few breaks and I had to strongly encourage them to drink Gatorade. This is my 4th move in the past 6 years and I could not think of moving without the support of Bernard movers. I just moved from the South Loop to Washington, DC this weekend. The move itself went seamlessly - Marvin and Juan were absolutely amazing and caring. My things were packed overall with great professionalism. I loved working with Lynn as well - a reason why this great company has been around so long. My only complaint with the length of time it took to get my estimate. Krystian is completely excellent, but taking more than a week to get back to me was very concerning. I hired these movers after looking at a lot of Chicago moving companies. I picked this one because it had the best price, and the quality was just as good. The 3 guys that did my move were fast, efficient, and really pleasant. All of my furniture made it without any dings or scratches because they wrapped everything carefully and didn't throw things around the way some movers do. They took note of any boxes marked as fragile, and were gentle with my lower quality IKEA furniture. I'll never move without hiring Bernard Movers again. Upon the suggestion of a friend who's used Bernard at least three times, I gave Lynn at Bernard a call to request a quote for a move on the last day of the month (i.e. a very busy day for moving companies), and during a very specific and non-negotiable time slot, no less. Lynn called me back the same day and I was floored by how friendly and personable she was; before we even started talking about the move, we chatted on a personal level for about 20 minutes. I couldn't believe that a woman as busy as she would devote that kind of time to me during what is the company's busy season. Once we started talking business, she was professional and accommodating. 30 minutes into our call, I needed no convincing - I had all of the information I needed and decided on the spot to book with Bernard, and I got my coveted time slot on that coveted last day of the month. The next morning, I had a change in circumstances that would affect my appointment with Bernard and reached out to Lynn right away - I expected in all fairness to be charged a fee for canceling, or at the minimum, to be met with unhappiness at my change in plans, but Lynn couldn't have been nicer or more understanding about everything. I just finished using Bernard Movers, and they seemed pretty pricey (2 hour minimum at 99 bucks/hr), but then again, Ive never moved before, so I dont have anything to compare it to. I only had about 7 things to move, and they were fast! They cracked jokes, and made me feel comfortable, and they called me along the way to let me know when they were changing route due to traffic. If I could give one critique, it would be that they scratched a wall when they were moving. Its no big deal, but now I have to paint it in addition to the 200 bucks I just spent. The eco-tote, key chain, and magnet as a free gift made up for it though, so I didnt complain. Overall, Robert and his crew did a great job, and I would use them again (granted I can afford them). This is a review for the first part of my move, as I have not yet arrived in my new city and had my things delivered, I will update later. My move is of basically a one bedroom apartment from Chicago to Manhattan. I had been debating between a few different moving companies, some that were cheaper but had complaints, and Bernard movers who was a little more expensive (although not the highest estimate) and hadn't had a complaint with the Illinois movers association in ten years. I decided the peace of mind would be worth it, and went with Bernard. Rick, Marcos and Paul were great. They showed up on time, and had moved people from my building in Hyde Park before, so they knew where the truck should go and how to allow room in the loading bay for waste management, so they never had to move the truck. They quickly got to work disassembling and wrapping up all of my furniture, wrapping everything in blankets, even the Ikea furniture. They were friendly and professional. They tagged every item with a number so nothing would be lost, and were very careful. They also work with a charity, zealous good, so they were able to take away some clothes and shoes that I wanted to donate, very convenient. I had the same guys bring my furniture into my new place. They have a dedicated staff and dont just hire people in the city they're moving too. The guys were great, even managed to fit my giant couch into the elevator. Nothing was damaged, everything was in perfect shape. After doing a great job moving everything in, they charged me the original quote, and didn't try to tack on any extra fees, even though the company had ended up holding my things for a bit while I was overseas. I arranged on the phone to move a number of our things; Lynn Bernard was very nice and over the next couple of weeks kept in touch to make sure we were still on schedule. The day of, the crew called to say they were running about an hour behind - a courtesy which we much appreciated. They strapped on industrial-strength suspender-straps to manage some heavier items (I think they should wear thick leather weightlifting belts too) The move of some of our things to storage is about the only thing that has gone smoothly during these trying times. Bernard Movers is a phenomenal company with great employees. They moved me from an apartment to storage to a new apartment over a few months this summer. You have direct contact with Lynn Bernard who does all scheduling for the moves. She's very responsive to e-mail and phone calls. You receive e-mail confirmation leading up to your move. The storage is an awesome feature to take advantage of if you have time in between moves. It's way more effective than getting your own unit. The storage unit is conveniently located not to far from downtown. The two moving crews I had for my respective move in and move out were both incredible. The team works well together, ensuring all pieces are accounted for. Everything is wrapped with blue cloth. All boxes are treated as if there is glass in all of them. I moved 15 boxes and ~11 pieces of furniture. Everything came back perfectly. I would definitely recommend Bernard Movers to everyone I know and use them again whenever I move! I remember seeing this moving company around the part of the city that I grew up in, I called other moving companies and was just circle jerked and decided to call Bernard when I was in a pinch and needed an emergency move on New Years Eve 2013. Lynn (the owner) was outstanding, incredibly helpful and understanding, she quoted a great price and the group of guys that she sent where hustlers who got the job done quickly and efficiently. They received a very healthy tip and I couldn't complain for a last minute move from Cook to Kane on a snowy, New Years Eve day. I live in the South Loop and Benard Movers are ALWAY blocking the entrance and exit of our building's garage alley. It's common courtesy to not block an alley in a high traffic area where residents are coming in and out (and knowing the other side is blocked by construction). The alley is big enough for two way traffic, but movers need to be as close to the fence or wall as possible! Last week I was trying to leave and the mover said they will move but just continued to move and disregard me. I was late for my appt. Today there were 5-6 cars stuck and the movers were so disrespectful. This was at 8AM, the time where people are trying to get to work. A resident had to go to the hospital and they still did not move the truck. I had to reschedule my appt because they didn't move after 4 residents asked them to move and that they can't block the alley way. Benard Movers are blocking the alley at least once a week and they don't care if they're causing a traffic jam. Tried calling them several times, but the company never answers. Bernard movers came highly recommended by the building I moved into in Streeterville yesterday. Couldn't be happier with Bernard movers. Fredo, Dave, and Jeorgio showed up on time and made this the easiest move I have ever done. We had an antique coffee table that they took extra precautions with, they did an excellent job with the couch and wrapping up a couple of key items. These guys work fast, so make sure you're actually ready to move when they arrive. They finished the move in about 3 hours, which would have been much faster if we didn't have to deal with a guy in my old building being parked in the loading dock when the movers arrived. Bernard is reasonably priced, but more importantly, they took care of my stuff. I didn't get the extra insurance because they knew how to wrap/tape/box the important/expensive things we had to move. We have used Bernard four times now. Each time, they are on time, efficient, careful with our belongings, and fairly priced. With our most recent move, they stored half of our household at their storage facility while we did some remodeling. The ability to store with them made our lives so much easier then renting a storage unit. We visited the storage space once to retrieve a needed item and they were very accommodating. Meh. They seemed to take an awfully long time to unload and broke a few irreplaceable items (my wedding champagne flutes!!). Whatever, it happens. The most off-putting thing, though, was the lead mover who reminded me no fewer than five times that they make $8 an hour and rely on tips to make their living. He didn't charge me for some boxes, as long as I promised to "take good care of him." Comments like this kept creeping into conversation--It was just awkward. Given how often I rely on online reviews, I am terrible about writing them. However, given how stressful cross-country moves CAN be, I felt I owed this to fellow Yelpers. Note: I still have a couple of final boxes to unpack, but so far no complaints. My estimate process was easy and the quoted price was similar to a terrible company and significantly less than that quoted by a seemingly comparable, good company. The movers were on time and got our entire place packed up much faster than I anticipate. Hiring packers might be one of my best life decisions. We paid extra for direct delivery so we could have our stuff delivered within a few days. Overall, everything was delivered smoothly and as quoted. The only negatives were minor: the movers delivering were slightly late. There were a couple of broken small items, but the vast majority including plates, vases, wine glasses, etc. are all in good shape. Some of the guys were friendlier and more helpful than others. But for the price and overall service, I was pleasantly surprised and would definitely use them again. read more

I have used Bernard Movers for three moves And I was a residential Realtor for many years and I recommended them to tons of my clients. We all (except for one extremely unrealistic client) had good experiences. I have found all of the men who did my moves to be professional, friendly and efficient. They were super fast without being careless. And during my last move when a piece of aluminum siding was slightly damaged by the movers, Lynn Bernard sent her estimator out the very next day. He ordered the replacement and installed it the moment he received it. My personal advice to you is to always pay for an extra man. It may cost more money per hour but you will save in total number of hours and end up paying a lot less. And pack your own stuff and have it organized so that they can just grab and go. When I first setup for my move date I was told that I was going to be the second move of the day and that they couldn't give me an exact time that the movers would be available to move. I completely understand why they couldn't be available and I asked if they could just give me a 1.5 hour heads up so I would be able to get to my storage unit in time for them. The day before my move I called again to confirm everything and I was told that the movers would call me 1.5 hours before they would show up and that I should make myself available between 2pm and 3pm. On the move day I was surprised to get at call around 1pm from the movers saying they would be at my storage unit in 40 minutes. I was a little peeved about this since I clearly asked and was confirmed that they would give me a 1.5 hour heads up. Anyways, I raced to my storage unit to let the movers start working. My movers were Vinny, Manny and Darius and let me say that they were awesome. They were all really friendly and got right to work. They took care of all my furniture and wrapped anything that they thought would get even slightly damaged. The second thing that put me off a little was that within five minutes of them working it was strongly suggested that they get a tip at the end of the job. I'll quote what was said to me: "If you take care of us then we'll take care of you". Ummm, I don't think that's how it works. First of all, you shouldn't ask for a tip before you've barely done anything and second of all, you're supposed to take care of me first, the paying customer, before I take care of you in they way of a tip. Everything else went fine without any other problems and for the most part Vinny, Manny and Darius were very polite and professional besides the incident I mentioned above. They got me moved in and settled in record time. The last minor thing that was a little frustrating was that when they took my light bulbs out of all my floor lamps they put them in the bottom of a box with other things so of course when I tried my lamps later none of the light bulbs worked. This isn't a major thing or even a expensive fix, it was just frustrating because I just had to go out and buy new bulbs Overall my experience with Bernard Movers was great. They would have gotten 5 stars except for the reasons I mentioned above. When moving day arrived, Frank, Patrick and Maurice were helping me move. They were not only very efficient, but extremely careful as well. My couch wouldn't fit down the front or back stairwell, but they assured me they would find a way to get it out. My experience with Bernard Movers was a nightmare. *They showed up 2 hours earlier than we scheduled with a very small truck. *The guy that was leading the crew told me it would be a 6 hour job even though I lived in a two bedroom apartment (it only took 3 hours by the way but he wanted to give me a high estimate to sign so he could cover himself). *They put a hole in our wall, which they had to come back and repair. *They broke items and threw them away instead of telling us about them (like a mirror that just never made it to our new apartment). *They damaged our table, all four of our shelves, and other little items. *They asked me if I wouldn't repor the damage to their company so they wouldn't get in trouble. *One of the guys kept commenting on how nice my place was and how much it probably cost to live there. *They were cursing and talking about how they weren't going to move my stuff if it was going to be a long job. These guys were TREMENDOUS! First, I spent a ton of time getting referrrals from friends and calling around generally. You will not find a more 'normal', flexible person than Lynn. She gave me a fair and honest quote and she did not beat me to death with the nickel and dimes that goes on in this industry. On moving day, my crew of FREDDY, NIGEL and ADAM showed up a like a SWAT team. Assessed what I wanted moved, how I wanted it moved, if there were needs for additional materials and what that would cost me and how much the move would be. Then they got to work--they wrapped up my china and kitchenware very delicately. They handled the wrap of the dressers and chest of drawers like professionals. They were consistently respectful of the house asking if it was ok to "use the bathroom" or fill up their water bottles. Bernard Movers sent us a great crew! We had a very unique move. We moved some stuff from a one bedroom walk up, to a high rise, then some more stuff from a high rise to a fourth floor walk up. The guys (Karol, Angelo, and David) arrived at 9am. They estimated it would take 7 hours. They were friendly, fast, and efficient. My walk up (fourth floor) was outside, through small nooks and tight squeezes, and the guys never once complained. They completed the whole job (2 moves) in 5 hours. We paid a total of $600 -- when split that was $300 each. (This included shrink wrap for some of the furniture and a plasma screen box.) I would recommend to a friend and will use again! We moved from Chicago to the East Coast over the summer and Bernard Movers was there to help. Given the opportunity to use them again, I definitely would! I felt as though I was taken care of by a small, family-owned company because Lynn Bernard herself picked up the phone when I called for my first inquiry! Bernard Movers was the perfect balance of price and speed. I was warned of all of the other companies that try to scam you but I knew I did not have to worry about that with Bernard Movers. They were honest and willing to work to accommodate our move, whereas I found the larger companies inflexible and felt as though they treated me as "just a number." After the cross-country move, there were a few pieces broken or missing but we did most of the packing ourselves so I did not expect everything to survive. For the missing pieces, Lynn Bernard went above and beyond to make it right - calling me herself to resolve the issue. I felt very pleased with the personalized service. My only complaint is about the time it took to unload our belongings. At our point of origin, we had 4 men packing up the truck, which took about 3-4 hours. At our destination, which was a third floor walk-up, there were only 2 men carrying even our heaviest loads. It took almost 10 hours for them to unload the truck! The good news is that our belongings arrived even earlier than expected so that definitely outweighed the unload time. We just felt bad for the guys!
