How boring. Every time I go here it's the same old thing: quick service, cheerful and very helpful workers, lotsa good magazines. I even checked their free broadband, which runs at 15 megabits! I have smogged several vehicles here. I'd rather not have to go through groupon to get their special pricing. The technicians are pretty fast and nice. Depending on the time of day, it gets pretty busy. Make an appointment and the wait is not so bad. I now go elsewhere in Berkeley. It's even cheaper, you pay cash, it's just as fast, and the service is just as good. No coupons, no printouts, no groupon needed. Look around. read more

This place is absolutely awesome! Just went back here again with my second vehicle, and I can't say enough good things about the staff. I called up to see if they could take my vehicle (it's an '84 VW Vanogan), and they said it would be no problem. I was nervous about it passing due to it being an older vehicle, so the guy recommended I drive it around for 20 minutes before bringing it in. I scheduled an appointment (they have this awesome online scheduling system now) so I would not have to wait upon arrival and let the engine cool too much. When I got there, nothing but friendly service. The technician got to my van right away, and I was out of there in 15 minutes. And it passed! *happy dance* I thought this place was good the last time I went there, but now they're even better with their online scheduling service. And they are a Test-Only station, so anyone can go there. I don't know why anyone would bother going elsewhere...seriously! read more

Berkeley SMOG is very polite and courteous but I don't think their techs are following the guidelines for at least one of the new subjective tests imposed by the State. I recently bought their Groupon for a SMOG test. My car passed all tests except the new "snap throttle test". According to the State Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) which sets the rules - "The BAR snap test consists of quickly pushing-and-releasing the accelerator pedal from the idle position to between 2,000 and 3,000 RPM, then immediately allowing the engine to return to idle." On my car, when the tech performed the test, he floored my car at least into the 5,000-6,000 rpm range and looked in the rear view mirror to see if he saw smoke. He visually failed my car on this part of the test as their was visible exhaust. My car does not smoke, is maintained, and never failed a previous test. I went to my long-term mechanic and he said most cars will fail a test like that at sudden, high rpm and that it is dangerous for the engine to snap the throttle into 5-6K rpm. I think there's a reason why the instructions are in the 2-3K RPM range and not higher. When I left Berkeley SMOG, they said I should go to a mechanic and come back and get re-tested for another $20. I'm going to my mechanic but I may just start over somewhere else. read more

I've come into this place before. They were very nice. Came in today. I asked a simple question if they were using another smog station next to the one that they seemed to be using more often. The guy told me my question didn't make sense. I said I was asking because I wasn't sure when I would be next in line. He said they had appointments. I said ok "when would I be next"? He gave me attitude and told me to bring my car in another time, speaking down on my me as if he had better things to do than deal with me as a customer. Terrible customer service. Really friendly/fast service for a reasonable price. I went on a weekend (which I assume is busier than weekdays) and it only took 30 mins total to get my test done. There were a couple of people in front of me and if I were to go again, I'd probably use the online schedule in order to make an appointment. The dude was really nice and helped manage expectations about wait time. All in all, I would come back and recommend to all. read more

I went to Berkeley Smog Test Only on February 26th without an appointment and Jessie was able to fit me in no problem. He was very nice and he got me in and out quickly even though there were six cars in front of me. He was so nice and happy he was literally whistling while he worked. When he was finished with my car, which passed (phew) he left a chocolate on a napkin in my car. I have never had a better customer service experience in my life. read more

We have an older truck (fingers crossed every time we have to smog it!) and I only had a small window of time to get this done. I stopped by on a week day afternoon without an appointment and he was able to take care of it - I was off with paperwork in hand within 45 minutes. Fantastic! This place is THE BEST and I am NEVER GOING ANYWHERE ELSE to get my car smogged EVER as long as I live in the Bay Area!! 2 years ago, when I last had to get a smog check, I had THE WORST experience at an incompetent and dogmatic smog only station. I actually had mild PTSD from that experience, but Berkeley Smog Test Only Center CURED ME!! As if another great review needs to be written, here we go. I purchased a groupon and make my appointment for 10am Monday morning (great online scheduling and email reminders). I've learned to expect an overly crowded nightmarish situation when redeeming groupons for services. However getting SMOG'd is already a pain, so I didn't expect this experience to be much different. I prepared for long lines and dirty/ grumpy mechanics. I arrived at the Smog center about 5 minutes early and a happy (cheerful, even!) man immediately took my car. I sat outside, read 2 pages of my book and it was over! I was shocked. I went inside, collected my papers and was done. I was walking to my car so happy, only to find a cute smog NAPKIN and ghirardelli chocolate on my steering column. I have a big fat crush on Berkeley Smog. read more

Smog Certification in 5 Easy Steps: 1. Make an appointment online. 2. Show up at designated time. 3. Complete "Customer Contact Info" section on carbonless order/invoice form. 4. Go to the bathroom. 5. Come back, pay for the cert & collect the docs. (BONUS STEP: 6. Eat Chocolate!!) Total elapsed time: 15 min. I rated it Woohoo! As good as it gets! even though I just thought of one thing that could get gooder. Step 3 could be obtained from Step 1, but would only work for those of us who are about organizing our days online. Okay, that was amazing. Online booking. Confirmations. They were ready for me even though I got there early. On a holiday (ok, MLK day isn't a holiday for everyone, but the DMV is closed.) They told me 20-30 minutes, but were probably done sooner -- I was having tea and biscuits at the amazing bakery down the street ("Standard Fare" - review to come.) These guys are great and super friendly. I bought a Groupon for a smog test at their location. In the middle of the test, my check engine light came on. Probably due to the gas cap not tightening well enough. Needless to say, I was pretty pissed because they had just scanned my Groupon and it couldn't be used again and now I automatically failed my test because of the light. The main guy there, Jessie(sp), saw this whole thing happen with the light, as he was the one to run the test on my car. He was kind enough to give me a 30 day grace period to have the light fixed and come back for a free test. I was back the following weekend and past my test this time! I was extremely grateful for his kindness and understanding. Will keep coming back here and will also recommend to my friends. read more
