Signed up for online appointment & received an appointment confirmation. Hopped in my truck & drove from El Cerrito to BSTOC only to find out that machine used for "older" vehicles was on the fritz, but was in the process of being repaired. I was invited to come back later w/the incentive of a "discount". Considering the distance, I opted to go somewhere else. Technically, since I didn't receive any service from BSTOC, I can't really review them. Unfortunately, that's not an option offered by Yelp. Called yesterday for information, told me email for appointment, so I did. I also called and left message. Arrived 20 minutes early, a car was being worked on. That car left, worker put another car in, which I think was his. "Am I next after this car?" I asked. "Yes. Did you have an appointment?" "Yes," I said. "What time?" "10 am." His car stayed in the shop stall for 10-15 minutes. Then another car drove up, the worker moved his car, the other car drove in stall. "Wait, I thought I was next." "IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE RUDE AND PUSHY YOU CAN LEAVE." Whoa, I backed up at least two steps in shock. He had an empty stall for several minutes wherein he could have done my car. But no, when the other man came in the worker moved his car out to let the other car in. Never have I ever experienced such disgusting treatment of a customer. The owner lost out on my business while the worker had his car in slot to keep me out. Guess he doesn't like women much. read more

I am a return customer to Berkeley Smog Test Only Center. I've always had good, quick, friendly service and today was no exception. They were open during the pandemic lockdown, following all the precautions (in fact, while I was there they politely turned away a gentleman who wasn't wearing a facemask). I made a same-day appointment online, and when I arrived early they took me right in. The whole procedure took less than 20 minutes and the smog specialist was courteous and efficient. I despise the fact that I even had to come here. BUT I couldn't have asked for a more pleasant and quick experience. I love how an entire industry has emerged to make it even more expensive to live in California. Regardless, I mentioned Yelp for the $40 special. It was a beautiful day, so I waited outside and in about 20 minutes, my car had passed the smog test. I don't believe you can get smog checked for less than 40 bucks, so I'd say 5 stars for the value. read more

I had the freedom to set up an appointment almost at any time. Once I got to the test center, I was immediately greeted by the guys there. They were friendly and made some nice conversation. One of the guys (I didn't catch his name) told me that it would take me 10 mins for the test to be done. He gave me a form to fill out and by the time I was done filling out the form he told me it was done. I was very pleasantly surprised. It must have taken 5 minutes at the most. I paid him and was on my way. When I got into my car I saw that one of the guys left me a chocolate and napkin on my dashboard. I thought it was nice and it definitely brought a smile to my face. So in a nutshell: nice people, quick service, very accommodating. I will definitely be back the next time I need a smog test. read more

Greeted by friendly people, I filled out a 3-line form that took just seconds, flipped through a magazine in the waiting area and my car was ready, $55. report already sent to DMV. No more searching for a smog place. Honestly, they were so professional and just plain nice that I was happy to pay the 55, which is more than fair. I never mentioned Yelp because I don't see how they could stay in business if they charged less. Many places advertise "$20. off coupon" or "save 15%" but never give you the actual price. This place is absolutely awesome! Just went back here again with my second vehicle, and I can't say enough good things about the staff. I called up to see if they could take my vehicle (it's an '84 VW Vanogan), and they said it would be no problem. I was nervous about it passing due to it being an older vehicle, so the guy recommended I drive it around for 20 minutes before bringing it in. I scheduled an appointment (they have this awesome online scheduling system now) so I would not have to wait upon arrival and let the engine cool too much. When I got there, nothing but friendly service. The technician got to my van right away, and I was out of there in 15 minutes. And it passed! *happy dance* I thought this place was good the last time I went there, but now they're even better with their online scheduling service. And they are a Test-Only station, so anyone can go there. I don't know why anyone would bother going elsewhere...seriously! read more

This is honestly the best possible place you can go for a smog check/registration etc.! Stop reading this review and JUST GO! You will be so happy, relieved (and pleasantly surprised) that you did! The owners and managers are not only fair, knowledgable and efficient, but they are some of the friendliest people I have ever met. Jesse was working the day I was in, and he was more than helpful and a pleasure to work with. If you have been to an actual DMV before, you know how much of a headache and how time consuming it can be. I can guarantee you that your experience at Berkeley Smog will be night and day. I had a deadline to meet in order to register my car from out of state and, long story short, I started out at the Claremont DMV where, after being misdirected my multiple staff members, I wasted more than 3 hours of my time standing in a line that ran out the door and wrapped around the building for absolutely no reason. After realizing this (big) mistake I left and hopped in my car and headed over to Berkeley Smog. (People, just make the decision to go to Berkeley Smog from the get-go, it's the right thing to do). The entire process to transfer the car title, register my car, and have new plates put on (which they put on for me) took no more than 15-20 minutes and there was absolutely no line. My only hesitation in writing this review is making too many people aware of how awesome they are and setting myself up for future lines at Berkeley Smog ;) Thank you so much Berkeley Smog! Berkeley SMOG is very polite and courteous but I don't think their techs are following the guidelines for at least one of the new subjective tests imposed by the State. I recently bought their Groupon for a SMOG test. My car passed all tests except the new "snap throttle test". According to the State Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) which sets the rules - "The BAR snap test consists of quickly pushing-and-releasing the accelerator pedal from the idle position to between 2,000 and 3,000 RPM, then immediately allowing the engine to return to idle." On my car, when the tech performed the test, he floored my car at least into the 5,000-6,000 rpm range and looked in the rear view mirror to see if he saw smoke. He visually failed my car on this part of the test as their was visible exhaust. My car does not smoke, is maintained, and never failed a previous test. I went to my long-term mechanic and he said most cars will fail a test like that at sudden, high rpm and that it is dangerous for the engine to snap the throttle into 5-6K rpm. I think there's a reason why the instructions are in the 2-3K RPM range and not higher. When I left Berkeley SMOG, they said I should go to a mechanic and come back and get re-tested for another $20. I'm going to my mechanic but I may just start over somewhere else. read more

I've come into this place before. They were very nice. Came in today. I asked a simple question if they were using another smog station next to the one that they seemed to be using more often. The guy told me my question didn't make sense. I said I was asking because I wasn't sure when I would be next in line. He said they had appointments. I said ok "when would I be next"? He gave me attitude and told me to bring my car in another time, speaking down on my me as if he had better things to do than deal with me as a customer. Terrible customer service. I have smogged several vehicles here. I'd rather not have to go through groupon to get their special pricing. The technicians are pretty fast and nice. Depending on the time of day, it gets pretty busy. Make an appointment and the wait is not so bad. I now go elsewhere in Berkeley. It's even cheaper, you pay cash, it's just as fast, and the service is just as good. No coupons, no printouts, no groupon needed. Look around. read more
