I used to go to here regularly for smog check. HOWEVER, last year they somehow did not transmit my smog check results to the DMV and caused me a whole lot of problems--including a lapsed registration. I did not discover the issue, until the CHP pulled me over for the lapsed registration. I went to the DMV to figure out what the problem was, and this smog check station did not electronically transmit the smog check results, which was required to complete my registration. I found the credit card receipt for the charge, and they took absolutely no responsibility for their lapse. They tried to talk me into returning for another smog check though (!!!). I will never trust them again. Do not go here for Smog check. I cannot figure out how to give 0 stars, but that is what they actually deserve. Just to be complete--these guys also go by "Berkeley Green Smog Check" as well as "Berkeley Gas and Smog", and "Smog Check Berkeley". Avoid three, they are the same, all located at 3000 Shattuck. read more

HHHMMM I've always gone here for smog checks but the reviews are making me 2nd guess things. I always use the on-line coupon but seeing that they're not honoring it sometimes makes me uneasy. I made an appointment on their operational website, got a message about pre-payment, ignored it (who pays for a smog check beforehand?) and showed up at this address, 3000 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley, which is a gas station. Well per my last review - after reading all the other reviews I decided to jump ship and go to another smog check business. It seemed as though folks were just having too many issues with this place especially with trying to use the coupon advertised. So I went somewhere close to home - KS Smog. All you need to do is mention the discount and the guy will honor it. You're in and out within about 10min. The manager is nice and extremely friendly and there's a place to sit while you wait. Arrived today as the second customer in line, a guy said the mechanic took off for lunch, would be back in 20. After a bit over an hour the mechanic finally showed up, told us is car window got broken and he's not taking any cars for the rest of the day, and started vacuuming the glass off his car's floor. The arrogance was amazing - he did not give a f...k. Who goes to pick up 20 minute lunch and gets car window broken anyway - where and by whom, you must ask... This was going to be my third time at this location - NO MORE. My time, the other guy's time is valuable, too. read more

It's fine. I don't know what I expected, but you're going to get the bare minimum service here. I had to wait for a guy to get out of his car to help me. It wasn't obvious if that was even going to happen as no one else was around to help or answer questions. Once the guy did show up he seemed angered that I wanted the online coupon discount. I've relied on this smog station for several years, since I live nearby, but in the last week they've really let me down. Perhaps only partially their fault, but due to how they treated me this time, I'm not going back. Also in retrospect they take forever to smog older vehicles. I have a late 90s vehicle that requires a manual smog check (drive it on rollers with a sensor on the exhaust), and when I first stopped by to have it smogged, the employee told me their machine was down and that older vehicles take 25-30 minutes to smog. He suggested I stop by late in the day later in the week instead, saying the machine would be fixed. A few days later, I go back, and I apparently arrived too late (5:25pm, they close at 6pm). This time he told me older vehicles take an hour to smog and that there wasn't enough time (I was the only person asking for a smog check). He says come back another day. So I showed up a third time, on the weekend, around 10am, five days since my first attempt, there's no one getting smogged and the same guy is sitting in his car. He opens his door, tells me the machine is still down and "I'm on the phone." Shuts his car door. Seemed like he didn't want my business! Frustrated, I went to 15 Minute Smog on Sacramento St. at Parker and they took care of me in 15 minutes, passed, including the roller tests. Enough said. read more

I believe there are 8 pumps and I've never had to wait to use one. I was happy to see that they sell Yerba Mate. Who doesn't need a little caffeine to fuel themselves when fueling their car? First time -- I couldn't find the guy. I think he was napping inside. The clerk inside shop didn't know, but they're two separate businesses so not his business to know. Finally found him inside the secret door in the garage and got my test which took 20 minutes. Turns out because my catalytic converter was stolen earlier in the year, I had to go to the "referee" and get a special sticker to pass. Everything else was fine. Guy told me to just come back and it'll be $8.25 for the certificate since everything else passed and he filled out the online forms saying he'll leave it incomplete, so he can just stamp it off once I get the ok from the ref. Fine. Ok I go get the stamp from the ref. I come back, other people waiting, guy is majorly rude, it's at least a 30 min wait. Fine. Ok I come back a week later and it's 11:55. He can't help because his lunch break is from 12-1. Fine. Ok I come back at 1. He seems confused to see me. It's now $10 for redoing the smog test and $8.25 for the certification. Definitely not what he told me but fine, ok. Oh, and the credit card machine is broken, so it's cash only. I should have gone to one of the 100 places on San Pablo Ave... and you can too!
