I picked up a pack of these at the airport on the way out. I had heard of them, but never tried them. They weren't cheap (in the airport at least). $13.00 for about 6 cookies, or $5.00 for a 2 pack. I'm sure they are cheaper in the stores. Anyways...........first bite in, my kids, wife and I LOVED them. They are a nice soft cookie topped with thick fudge icing. I purchased a strawberry shortcake for my friends. ALL the strawberries had fur on them. EVERY SINGLE ONE of them. The box was taped and well secured. I did not notice until the next day. Let me say i have been a patron of Bergers since the 90's. I did not take the cake back the next day because we had already cut it and I KNOW the owner would not have been receptive. I have seen other people with issues. First off, I had ordered 2 dozen of these cookies to be shipped to me in Oregon. I received an email stating my order was received and another email would be coming with tracking information. I did not receive any tracking information at all so it was a crap shoot when they would arrive. Luckily I was home when they arrived. I contacted the store with no response. Very disappointing. I've lived in Baltimore for 10 years and have never had a Berger Cookie. When a coworker mentioned how good they were I embarked on a mission to give them a try. Needless to say I wasn't a fan. For starters I want to say that Royal Farms sells Berger Cookies by the pack, so if you cant find the bakery just try Royal Farms. I ended up finding a pack of two in the candy aisle for $2.79. In my opinion two was more than enough. The cookie itself consist of a wafer topped with thick fudge icing. Personally I found the wafer tasteless and dry, like a sugar free shortbread cookie I would find in the diabetic aisle. On top of the cookie is a thick layer of fudge icing. While some people have spoken highly of the topping I personally hate it. In fact the icing resembles a bottle of Duncan Hines frosting. This is obviously not a good thing, since the fudge icing is supposed to be a special German recipe. It may have started that way in the beginning, but it is certainly not that way now. Despite the cookie being tasteless and the icing being gross it is not these things that lead me to leave a bad review. I understand that taste is subjective, so to each his own. Some may enjoy the taste. My issue is that these things are filled with sugar. I mean, in a very unhealthy way. Eating two cookies (just TWO cookies) will add 40g of sugar to your diet. Dense and Rich are two words that can be used to describe the famous Baltimore Berger Cookie. It's quite similar to a Black & White cookie. The cookie part is a bit more dense and chewier. Instead of royal icing, it's a super fudge-y frosting/topping that coats the top. Really need a nice glass of milk to cut the rich sweetness of the frosting. It was just 3.5 hours ago when I lost my Berger cookie virginity in the driver's seat of my car. I've heard about these cookies only a few months ago, even though I grew up in the area. Bothered by reading about them without having ever tried one, I FINALLY set up a quest to Giant, just to get a package. After frantically looking through the bakery section and almost convinced they weren't in stock, I found them hidden below a table of breads or cookies or cakes (whatever they weren't on my radar). I ripped the package as I was walking out the store, but in an attempt to maintain some dignity, waited until I got inside my car to eat one. The 30 second anticipation during the walk to my car was almost unbearable. I took my first bite into the soft, chocolate frosted cookie and thought "this is aight," but upon further chewing, the soft cookie covered in the perfect amount of what seems to be in between chocolate frosting and fudge, was more than just "aight." I was lucky enough to grow up on these gems- either my parents or my grandparents almost always had some on hand. They are this crazy SOFT shortbread type cookie covered with a TON of thick chocolate fudge. SOOOOO good. I don't care if they're horrible for you! You really only need to eat one and make sure you have some milk on hand! We have found them at BJ's, Costco and Sam's Club at greatly discounted prices. A friend of mine brought these over to my house and left them there. They were in a zip-lock bag and I decided to try one. (BIG MISTAKE!) Just learned about this cookie today by chance. Thanks to another review I saw a local place that sold them. I stopped by during lunch and picked up a pack. The package is heavy (1lbs, 10 cookies) and through the plastic you can see why. The cookies are loaded with at least a 1/4in of fudge on one side. I tried one so far and they are easily one of the best cookies I have ever had. I would imagine some cold milk would make the experience even better. I don't think I could eat more than one at a time though. The next time I am near Baltimore I will stop by the bakery and see how freshly baked ones compare. My friend brought me some Berger cookies when he went to visit Baltimore last year, and I forgot just how good these cookies really were until I went to Baltimore this past weekend. The Berger Cookie is delicious! It's a shortbread-like cookie topped with a generous amount fudge. My husband called this location today and the woman he spoke to was very rude to him. He is visiting Baltimore and heard very highly of these cookies and when he tried to purchase these today he said the woman on the phone was "appalled" that he expected to just come in and pick up cookies. He said the Google reviews were horrible and that basically the woman told him he was not going to be able to purchase cookies, period.
