Baltimore Review 3/Many: I was at this historical market a few days ago while exploring Baltimore and going to a nearby convention, with this spot being pretty close to our not-so-good La Quinta Downtown hotel. After looking around, I eventually got some snacks from here, and I am happy I made that choice. They're mostly known for their namesake cookies, but since I'm not the biggest fan of either black-and-white cookies or chocolate frosting, I went with some Apple Fritters. The fritters were 3 for $5, which was a nice deal. They were large, not overly sweet, soft, had a light cinnamon flavor, and had plenty of apple filling. In short, they were very tasty and made a good snack throughout the short trip. Another person liked their cake donuts, and I concur, based on the piece of the blueberry cake donut I tried. The woman working there was also friendly. The reviews seem pretty mixed here, but I liked the fritter and the price was reasonable. read more

The top is a smear of fudgy chocolate frosting with a soft butter cookie bottom. If you like an overwhelming chocolate frosting ratio to cookie, this is it for you. I love Berger cookies but can get them in grocery stores around town, so I elected to try something different and got a black bottom cupcake. The texture was dry and it lacked flavor, with hardly any cream cheese or chocolate chips. I doubt it was fresh. Prices were reasonable and service was quick, but if I went back I would ask what items are the freshest and order that. read more

Tuesday 3/25/25 While I was waiting for my order at Sunny Side cafe, I was exploring the Lexington market and it was a great experience seeing all the different food vendors and what they offered. But this food vendor in particular really caught my eye for their wide variety of baked goods. After looking through their selections I got the cinnamon roll $4 (2 for $8 deal), caramel cinnamon roll $4 (2 for $8 deal), carrot cake $6, and the Oreo cake $6. Honestly, I did not enjoy a single item from this spot. The baked goods are not good, and the cakes taste like store-bought cake mix. I had high hopes for this spot but was severely disappointed. If I could, I would get a full refund because I feel like I wasted my money. read more

Berger's Bakery aka Markey Bakery is nostalgic for all the reasons people love American baked goods including cake slices, cheesecake, pies, cookies, and especially the famous Berger cookies which I believe are prepared fresh daily. The stand reminds me of the iconic cookies vendor you see at shopping malls in the DMV. For what it is worth, the baked goods satisfy your sweet tooth despite not being the best quality. The customer service was good and the staff were helpful. The bakery is located in the Lower Market on a corner stand near the Eutaw Street entrance where there is plenty of space. Overall an OK experience. I will certainly return to try more of their cookies. read more

Berger's is a famous bakery known for its cookies. This location is within Lexington Market in Baltimore. Since I was traveling, I opted for the boxed cookies. The cookies sort of look like black and white cookies, though with a heavier chocolate topping. I liked the cookies, but they were not the greatest that I had ever had. I've had the Berger cookies 'fresh' and in the 'box', but I actually prefer the boxed cookies. The 'fresh' cookie was a little stale and uneven. All in all, the cookies are good, but certainly very sweet and there is more fudge icing than cookie itself. I also got the bean pie ($5), and it was refrigerated, which I don't know if that's normal or not. First time having bean pie, but it tasted along the flavor profile of a sweet potato pie. read more

If your in Baltimore you have to grab some Berger's Cookies from Lexington Market during your visit. I parked across the street in a public parking garage. Thankfully around lunch time the line wasn't too long. The staff was moving people through quickly. Your in the Lexington market so you can plan for a bite to eat inside and hit up the bakery before you leave. Best way to describe them are simply old time classic cookies. Soft cookies coated with chocolate fudge. Can't beat it, I bought a whole bunch to take home for friends, but my boys ended up eating them all! Found this charming stop on the first floor of the Lexington Market building. Was a tourist in the city and this was a highlight of the trip! This place has the BEST chocolate frosted cupcake I have tried in my life. I had to go back and get another as soon as I tried it. It is perfectly silky and has a great chocolate taste. I opted for the sticky bun, and two FRESH Berger cookies for a total of $5.50. That is a deal to me, in the world where coffee costs the same amount at nearby coffee chains. Market Bakery has everything sweet and wonderful to sell. It is such a pleasure and an honor to meet a couple that is so dedicated to each other, and their business, for such a long period of time. The best bakery I've been to in years. It's inside Lexington Market which is bustling with many locals and a few tourists. I purchased a few items that I personally got to try as well as a few for friends (snickerdoodle cake, berry penny pie & eclairs) that I was told were delicious (and perfectly priced). I tried the following & would get each one often if I lived in the area: 1) Bergers Cookies - I got the pre boxed ones for $6.99 (had about 8/9) cookies in it. They were unlike any cookie I have ever had & I'll have dreams about them: soft cookie with delicious fudge topping. 2) Cinnamon Roll: the dough wasn't too sweet and the frosting & caramel swirl on the top were epic. Bergers bakery is known for its bergers cookies, but they have so much more at their bakery - and it's all to die for! I've had quite a few different desserts here, including their lemon filled donuts, oatmeal raisin cookies, chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, chocolate cake and Apple fritter (don't judge me ). Trust me, everything is amazing and clearly made fresh. I normally order their desserts for work parties, and they are always timely and helpful! Recently I ordered a birthday cake for some coworkers. I got a half sheet strawberry shortcake, and it was absolutely delicious! There was none left, and for $80 this thing was GIANT. Little stand inside Lexington Market with various cakes (sold by slice, half cake, full cake) as well as pastries and baked goods. Hands down the best strawberry shortcake I've ever had. Home made cream and a half cake is only $8.99. Cake is the perfect amount of sweetness to balance out the strawberries. Texture is fluffy. Overall perfect. The famous Berger cookies are shortbread dipped in fudge. The shortbread is soft and the fudge is also really soft so there isn't a lot of texture. Be warned that the fudge is really really sweet. I can enjoy one but more than that is a bit too much. Definitely stop by to try the strawberry shortcake, everything else is worth a shot too! read more

Located in a cute "out of date" market. I noticed a couple reviews emphasizing that the market was in an unsafe area, so I ubered there as I was going by myself. It ended up being totally fine. I walked back home. I did go during the daytime though, so I can't speak for at night. -- I got the snickerdoodle cookie, Berger's cookies, and the strawberry shortcake. All for like $7. So for one their prices can't be beat! The snickerdoodle was probably my favorite, shame I only got one. It is reminiscent of insomnia cookies though so if you're closer to Fed Hill just get insomnia. I got the strawberry shortcake since another yelper said it was the best one they'd ever had. Unfortunately the best strawberry shortcake I ever had is still the one I had in my kindergarten class. I've spent years trying to recreate it and hoped this one would do the trick :/ Spoiler alert it didn't. It was still good though and a very generous size for the price! Now for the Berger's.... Hmmm hahah. I really liked them once I scraped off most of the chocolate. It tastes like hardened store-bought chocolate frosting lol and it's a thickk layer. Before I scraped off the chocolate I could only eat half of one before I had that sweetness overload feeling. I'm also the type to scrape the frosting off cupcakes though if that helps clarify? It has a lot of chocolate on top of the cookies. The cookies is soft not hard. Chocolate definitely have different taste than regular chocolate. There was not much milk favor, mainly chocolate. It sweet not bitter. Half a lb is 3 dollars which has 4 cookies in it. It not a bad price despite the fact it was a good cookies. I came here for their namesake Berger Cookies and I left a happy camper. BERGER COOKIES: 1/2LB Berger Cookies ($3): Good! The cookie is soft and has a texture between a cake and shortbread cookie. It's hand-dipped in a decadent chocolate fudge--sweet and thick. A 1/2LB gets you 5 cookies. The huge slices of cake looked ridiculously good, but I will have to try them on a second visit. This review is specifically only on the Berger cookies but everything especially the strawberry cake looked delicious. These soft cookies are hand coated in a wonderful chocolate fudge. If you like sweet soft cookies then these are a must. Don't judge Berger Bakery on the Lexington Market location. If your uncomfortable in the area then don't go alone, it's not to everyone's taste and even after the new market is open the local area won't change much. But it's important to understand that Berger's has been at this location before the area became what it is. My wife and I seen nothing crazy, nothing bad was going on, security guards and police were present, and above all Berger's Bakery was awesome. read more

Berger's was one of two requisite stops I had to make at Lexington Market--the other being Faidley's seafood. Of course, I went to Berger's to try their famous cookies. These cookies are sold by the pound, and I asked how much a quarter pound is. The woman waiting on me told me it's "like three cookies," and tried to talk me into getting a pound. While I should have just gone with a quarter pound, I let myself be upsold to a half pound ($2.50) with the logic that these were unique cookies and I could eat them on subsequent days. As others have mentioned, the cookie consists of a vanilla wafer with a thick fudge icing. It's similar to a black and white cookie in flavor. Because both the cookie and the icing are soft, it didn't have enough differentiation in texture for my liking. As such, I found it to be okay, but nothing worth going out of my way for in the future. While I'm not sure about Baltimore, many superior cookies can be found in Philly's Reading Terminal Market alone. In case you're not familiar with Lexington Market, please be forewarned that it's located in a dodgy section of Baltimore and that the market itself is kind of sketchy. If you're not heading to Lexington Market for anything else, I personally don't feel that this cookie is worth going out of your way for. However, if you happen to be there, I'd say the cookie is worth a try due to its uniqueness and longevity. read more

Mmmm, Bergers. Of all the vendors at Lexington Market, this was one of the busiest and I heard they had some of the best treats. I grabbed up half a dozen of the famous Berger cookies and a slice of cake. Berger Cookies are a kind of cookie made and distributed by DeBaufre Bakeries. They are topped with a thick layer of chocolate fudge that derives from a German recipe, and are a cultural icon of Baltimore. The recipe has won several awards around the Baltimore area including the 2011 "Best of Baltimore Award" and the "Best Cookie" award in 2011. The product has also been featured in The Baltimore Sun, The View, and on Rachael Ray and The Best Thing I Ever Ate on the Food Network. Berger Cookies are handmade in a small factory in the Cherry Hill neighborhood of Baltimore. As of early 2012, the annual sales of DeBaufre Bakeries were about $2.5 million, with Berger Cookies making up 98% of that. Other than sales on its website, the company sells Berger Cookies only in the Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas. I also got a slice of white/yellow cake with strawberry. I ended up eating it a few days later. It was very moist, and it was good, but it was also interesting. It was TOO sweet and had kind of a tang to it. I'd probably have it once in a while but it was really overwhelming. I did love the texture though and that sweet, sweet strawberry frosting. Just a note, if you're not from the area, make sure to research Lexington Market so you have a good idea of what you're getting into. This is downtown and not the safest or cleanest area. No one really bothered me, but I saw my share of cracked out people and felt uncomfortable a few times. read more

They have a lot of other baked goodies, but I've only stopped by a couple times for cookies since they're relatively small, easy to share, and not necessarily a big calorie commitment. Dense and Rich are two words that can be used to describe the famous Baltimore Berger Cookie. It's quite similar to a Black & White cookie. The cookie part is a bit more dense and chewier. Instead of royal icing, it's a super fudge-y frosting/topping that coats the top. I think for a 1/2 lb it was around $2.15-ish (less than $2.50 for sure). Really need a nice glass of milk to cut the rich sweetness of the frosting. Also have pies (sold in half a pie and whole pies), other types of cookies (by the lb), muffins, and cake (by the slice [already wrapped] or whole). Bought a slice of red velvet. While the cake part wasn't too bad, it's a shame they do not use a cream cheese frosting. In my opinion, the combination of the touch of cocoa powder in the cake with cream cheese frosting is what makes a red velvet cake. Prompt service. read more

I stopped by here while going to Faidley's to get my jumbo crab cake plate of deliciousness. Apparently Faidley's is a part of an indoor market called Lexington Marketplace so we took a stroll through, checking out all of the shops and I tell you they have plenty for you. There was fresh meat, smoked meat, seafood, cooked seafood, soul food, fried chicken joints, smoothie bars, live entertainment and the gem of many bakeries there, Berger's. I'm so glad I stopped here, the lil old lady was so sweet and had me at, "How can I help you?" She had me buying stuff I didn't #1. Want and #2. Need but I couldn't tell granny no. So I bought huge square slices of lemon, strawberry, and chocolate cakes that she handmade with a half pound of chocolate walnut cookies, mmmm, those cookies!! I shared some with my colleague while she bought me a bean pie from another bakery; (wth), umm, ma'am, I don't do bean pies, I'm a Christian lol. Let me stop. I'm sure she meant well but I threw it away. I didn't even take a bite. Gosh, I hope she doesn't read this review. Stopped by Lexington Market for the famous Berger Cookies! It's a very old establishment and the cookies don't look the most appetizing, but I trust that Baltimore knows their cookies and bought a couple packaged chocolate dipped cookies (2 boxes for a total of 11.99). They sell donuts, pastries, cakes, and an assortment of cookies. There was a lot of hustle bustle around the run-down shop so I trust that the baked goods taste a lot better than they look.
