The night the hurricane hit us, we celebrated my husband's 85 birthday. The staff was wonderful, the drinks were perfect, and my husband's favorite fish and chips were great. My lobster was not at all good, very overcooked, dry and pretty tasteless. I think the chef was off that night, unfortunately, as I love lobster and was sure this would be a special treat. Not wanting to spoil a birthday dinner, I didn't say anything. I would be cautious about ordering this if I were the reader, as I wouldn't want this to happen to you. I love the oysters and appetizers but the best appetizer is the Pimento Cheese Hush Puppies! Amazing! Great cocktails and a great place to chill with friends and family. We made a last minute reservation and went for dinner on a Friday night. Good thing we made a reservation, because it was packed by the time we left. There are essentially 3 seating areas: main dining room, hallway, or back dining room. I would recommend requesting the main dining room as the hallway and backroom don't have as nice of an ambiance. We started with 1/2 dozen raw oysters,1/2 dozen of both the baked oyster options (not pictured), and the beet salad. The raw oysters were well cleaned and delicious. Of the two baked oyster options, I preferred the regular baked ones over the hunt's style with jalapeños. Admittedly, the beet salad was different than I was expecting. More of a true salad with greens and beets overtop, than just beets with additional toppings. Either way, it was still tasty. For entrees, I had the blackened grouper with creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. The grouper came with hollandaise sauce which I got on the side. The seasoning on the fish was delicious and it was cooked to perfection. It was one of the most well cooked pieces of grouper I have had. My husband had the fried chicken sandwich with french fries which he also enjoyed. Overall, we really enjoyed our visit and plan to come back. Honestly I think these oysters are pretty average, they're on the small side compared to others place I have went such as, Abel Brown Southern Kitchen and Oyster Bar. And I say that especially because you have to reserve a table at Becks. I also had their baked oysters, it had way too much cheese on it. And I'm a cheese love. Went on 3/13. Beautiful restaurant with rustic decor. Ordered baked oysters and was not impressed at all. They were the size of a dime if that and were overpowered by the three cheese blend. We ordered the jalapeño on 6 of them and the jalapeño slice was bigger than the oyster. Not worth $27 for a dozen. Also, ordered the blackened shrimp Poboy. One half had 4 small blackened shrimp in it and the other half had 2.5. Essentially the sandwich was empty aside from the fried green tomatoes. I don't recommend it for $16. I have been coming to Beck's for over 5 years and have never been disappointed. Located slightly away from downtown, the location still does not disappoint. This restaurant accepts reservations through OpenTable, but it is not necessary in order to get a seat (but recommended). While the menu is necessary for the restaurant, the real menu is the specials that the restaurant will constantly offer. The baked oysters are amazing while the grouper special is the go-to special. Each time I have dined here, the food has been great. Sides are cooked perfectly while the main entree is presented well. The atmosphere the comprises the restaurant is slightly noisy in the front while quieter towards the middle to back. The drink menu here is pretty good along with the service. We ordered multiple rounds of oysters that were clean, fresh, and had a good salinity level. The mignonette was delicious and didn't overpower the flavor of the oysters. The cocktail sauce (if made in house) should be bottled and sold! Two people in our party ordered the grouper special, which will change any persons mind who is not fond of fish. The grouper, the hollandaise, creamed spinach and potatoes in this dish were the definition of PERFECTION! If it's on the special when you visit, don't think twice and order it. The front of the restaurant is always packed, full of laughter and life. The food is great. We always order the raw oysters, which they have a nice selection of. That's the main reason why we eat here. The saffron mussels were fine and the shrimp po boy tasted as expected. The kitchen is very accommodating and they've worked with my dietary restrictions and preferences. Thomas was a fantastic, charismatic server. He offered great suggestions for drinks and dessert. He was knowledgeable of the menu and recommended a great dessert with chocolate mousse and Irish crème (delicious and velvety). Since it's usually packed, I've never waited for a table up front. I like sitting in the hallway area because it's intimate enough for my date and I to have privacy and not hear the other tables. The front does have a nicer ambiance though. There's more light and more space. The back dining room can feel crammed on a busy night. The restaurant has some great dishes, but the menu isn't very eclectic. It's pretty limited. While I enjoy coming here, it would be nice if the menu had more diverse options or a few extra items. The appetizers are more exciting than the entrées. This was our first time eating here, and we were really impressed with both the food and the service. I had the Cowgirl Ribeye, and my husband ordered the Lobster Tail. Everything was PERFECTLY prepared - the sauces and seasonings were melt-in-your-mouth delicious. My husband doesn't like Brussel sprouts at all, but he actually loved the ones here. Our server Amie was absolutely awesome from start to finish (she even brought us a complimentary dessert for having to wait a bit longer for our food due to a large party in the back). She is clearly terrific at what she does. This place is well worth the money (entrees average roughly $18 - $26 each). Ooooook, let's start with the appetizers! The special was tuna tartare. It was fresh and lightly seasoned. They were served with sliced cucumbers and fried wontons. While it was absolutely delicious. The portion was in the light side. Aside from that, it was the perfect starter. Let's move right along, next we tried the smoked wings. They were savory, sticky, salty, sweet and the perfect amount of smokiness. Great wings! They weren't the highlight of the show, but better than the average. Of allllllll the appetizers, the baked oysters stole the show! Seriously, these were the best oysters that I've ever had. Buttery and cheesy but perfectly balanced. Do yourself a favor and get the oysters. I haven't gotten to the entrees yet but I'll add on to the review as soon as I do. Alright, for the entree, I selected the Lobster tail that came fried alongside Brussels sprouts and onion rings. I didn't care for the breeding on the onion rings but that was strictly personal preference. The lobster tail was juicy and flavorful. The Brussel sprouts were delicious. They were lightly seasoned allowing the flavor to shine through. There was a dipping sauce that was absolutely amazing. I want to drink it by the gallon. Some things are worth the risk. While it's located next to a giant sink hole for now, Beck's is an excellent establishment owned by the same guy who brought you Sheehan's Irish Pub- John Beck. The restaurant has a VERY open atmosphere with a large community- style square table in the middle of the dining room. You can easily see everything going on in the kitchen as the chefs prepare your culinary fancies. Of course there is a nice-sized bar with great drink varieties. The place is bright, pseudo-country industrial, and just kinda happy. On my first visit, I did order somewhat of an odd combination- a Tuna Niçoise salad, and a side cup of venison chili. The chili came out first and was topped with cheese, scallions, and a nice crunch. The salad was a true sight to behold. Not at all what I expected, a large seared tuna steak rested atop a bed of fresh greens. Framing the salad were kalamata olives, a boiled egg, cherry tomatoes, a few potatoes (a cool twist), and steamed haricot verts. The accompanying Greek dressing introduced a VERY nice pop to the already delicious salad. All in all, I would highly recommend Beck's, not only for the cool atmosphere, great service, and delicious cuisine, but for the entire experience as a whole.
