This review is more about Ziggy's next door but honestly the workers at Beantown were just as bad. I was with a party of 7 looking for a place to sit down and have a drink along the freedom trail. It was early so the Pub next door wasn't open yet. We entered the coffee bar and stood in the small space between the door and the counter looking for an area that could fit all 7 of us. As we looked around, a woman at the counter said, very loudly, "you'll have to move while you decide, you can't stand in front of the door." We were literally there 30 seconds. Her tone was not welcoming and actually quite mean. As we moved toward the back we found a high top bar that would accommodate all of us. We asked a new server if it was ok to sit there. She said," No, can't you see that section is closed?" So we were in the building for 2 minutes and were already treated rudely by two different employees. We decided to leave and not give our business or our tip to people who clearly didn't care whether they made money or not. Customer service was abysmal. I don't recommend for any happy tourists visiting from out of town. They are miserable and will lower your impression of the beautiful city of Boston. read more

I feel like I'm always saying this on here, but IT'S A PUB, PEOPLE. After reading all of the negative reviews about this place, I just felt like it needed to be said again. It's exactly what you think it will be. Dark, lots of beers being thrown around, sports on the TVs, guys giving each other high fives, etc. I liked that no one was sloppy or being inappropriate. Maybe it's because I'm just out of college and naturally I expect 18-year-olds to be draped over the bar and swimming in their own vomit at a place like this, but most of the people in here were at least functioning (we left as a girl with a tiara came in though, so I can't vouch for that). The beer selection wasn't bad, wasn't great. I tried the Aligash White and it was fine. I will say that I have been trying to lose some weight, and this was definitely not a place that wanted to support me. I got the Chicken Caesar salad, but not without dominating my friend's nachos afterwards. Like I said, it's a pub. It does things that pubs do. I have been to Beantown Pub sooo many times and somehow never written a review. It's my go-to place for dates and group gatherings and pretty much any type occasion. Reasons? 1) It's near Park street, which is an easy location to get to for most people 2) They have plenty of room for groups, including a back room that's perfect for anything 3) the backroom has intimate booths for a date 4) pool tables and 5) THEY HAVE THE BEST BRUSCHETTA. It's open as early as 11am for brunch and as late as 2am for late night drinking. It's casual and good for a happy hour, post work type place too. I also just want to say again, GET THE BRUSCHETTA! It's got this amazing balsamic vinaigrette dressing and mozzarella cheese to die for. read more

I used to go here all the time in college, and even after. Although I haven't been back in awhile, I do love this place! The food is good and not to expensive, as are the drinks. It can be hard to get a table to sit for dinner, but there's usually some room at the bar. They have a few pool tables, and a private room that can be rented out for parties (did this once, and it worked out perfectly). It can get annoyingly crowded at times, so go early! read more

The Beantown Pub offers a good, central location to meet friends who live all over Boston or don't live in Boston. Gotta love Park Street for the parking and T accessibility. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than most of the places on Beacon Hill - and larger than most watering holes over thataways. You can usually plant your bum in a seat - even at peak hours on weekends, yet still feel like you're in the midst of a pretty lively scene. Great pre-or post-Orpheum place. Also a good place for grabbing a beer after a Filene's Basement binge. The food is not gourmet but comes in good portions - great for sharing and not overpriced. I really come here for the bar - it is long and well-stocked with many beer varietals. FIVE stars for the service - from the doormen to the waitresses, and especially the bartenders - the staff is GREAT. Had my husband's 30th birthday here in the Blue Room (A+) and it was really great! I agree with Meredith K. - This place does have a bit of a wet odor in the front room - smells like spilled beer in your fave college bar. Not really an offensive smell but it is there. read more

I've been coming here off and on the entire time that I've lived in the Boston area. Drinks with friends after a final, killing time before meeting up with other friends, playing pool after a law school formal (for real...), or desperately needing some salty fries with malt vinegar after eating 20 cups of ice cream at the Scooper Bowl while horribly hung over from a concert the night before. I can still vividly recall that feeling in my stomach, and Beantown saved the day. With the $2/game of pool and the yummy breading on their fries, Beantown isn't always my destination, but I have a great time whenever I stop in. read more

Above average Boston Irisher. 20-ish drafts on offer, mostly local Harppon and Sam Adams. BTW, you can literally gaze upon Adams' grave while enjoying a Sammy. If that's important to you, this is the place. All the standard Irish Pub menu offerings. Several flat screens show the games. Lots of seating in the back so don't worry if it looks crowded from the street. Speaking of which , there is great people watching from the window side stools. Beantown Pub. Where do I start. I guess I will start at the drinks. I love an Long Island, this place has a drink called the greatful dead that's basically, an evolved Long Island. 1 or 2 and will be definitely enjoying your night. The food is every bit of delicious. From the wings to the burgers to the sandwiches all meet my approval. Now for the atmosphere, this is definitely the hangout spot. I'll have to avoid the bar unless I am only drinking. It is impossible to eat without doubling over about two feet due to the length of my legs coupled with the weird 8-10 inch long curve at the top of the bar that butts up against my knees when on a stool. I feel like a hunchbacked gorilla. The food itself isn't bad. Not spectacular, not great, but serviceable and you get your money's worth. The burgers are a decent portion, though I liked not the cole slaw as much, being too chunky for my tastes and too much mayo. I don't taste a particular 'special sauce' in the barrister burger that they have and the onions on it were chopped red onions that were uncooked, but the burger itself was fine. The helpings of fries are huge, to the level of Eagles Deli, and of a similar style. The food comes out to-order, but fairly fast. The selection of beers on tap does not seem that large, not having any of my preferred types (they have Harpoon IPA, but not UFO, for example). The service I've had at the bar has been very good, never taking long for a drink or with food. The environment is definitely doucheish when I've been there, but doesn't keep me away from watching a bit of an afternoon game over a quick meal. It's at a lower price point than Marliave around the corner and I mind not coming here if there's an afternoon Sox game to catch a bit of it, but I'm not grabbing food at the bar again unless I want a slipped disk. read more

This is a boston bar. I have been here a few times since it is super close to the Park Street Station and close when meeting up with people. It is good and reliable. They have pool, a jukebox and lots of loud noisy Bostonians. I have eaten a few things here including their sandwiches, chicken fingers and chili. None where overly impressive but the prices are decent and they serve food all night. They have lots of beers and a good selection of mixed drinks. Service can be slow but the best experience I had here was for brunch. The food is great, it is much quieter, the waitstaff is better and you can still play pool. read more

3 1/2 stars I came in here to beat the harsh winter cold. This is a fun local pub that serves your regular beer on tap and other interesting fruit inspired drinks. My favorite is the woodchuck cider which was sweet and crisp. I tried the Blueberry beer which sounds more interesting than it taste- a little bit on the bitter end. When I first moved here I assumed Beantown was nothing more than a tourist trap aimed at luring tourists who were walking through the commons. I stopped by one night and realized it's that but it also a pretty darn nice bar. I'm a big fan of their barrister burger. It's abig juicy burger topped with caramalized onions and bbq sauce. It comes with some UHMAAZING crispy and not too-salty fries. Totally worth checking out. The bar is long and wraps around a corner, there are always a good amount of knowledgable bartenders working, so waiting for a drink is never too hard. Most of them are really nice too if you have any questions. Towards the back, the bar opens up into a couple of large rooms, one filled with pool tables, the other with tables and counter tops. Prices are reasonable, burgers run around $10. Beers around 5-6. + they have a fair amount of well positioned tv's that are always tuned into the various sports channels. read more

Grabbed a few coworkers and decided to check the lunch scene out, kind of wish I didn't. I went with the Barrista burger, and it was so-so. Not much flavor, very dry/almost stake bun, and the burger could have used much more of its special sauce. The fries were pub/steak fries, and were decent. Maybe it was just my selection that left me disappointed, as my coworker's selections looked much better. Service was only decent, if that. The waitress wasn't too cheery/friendly and she went missing at times (no mid-meal drink refills). The most I knew about it was from a duck tour: it's the only place in boston where you can drink a Sam Adams while looking at Sam Adams (his headstone anyway). I figured it was a tourist spot, being on the freedom trail. I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised, though. I can't speak for the food, but I had a great time here. Good drinks, respectable beer list, outstanding music (any place that plays Boyz II Men and Ace of Base throwing me back to seventh grade dances is okay in my book). Went here to meet up with a large group of friends. You really can't beat the location and the prices are very fair. It's definitely not a fancy place by any means. The weekday evening crowd age varied from 23-65 when I was there but the mean age was about 35. Despite going during an important sports game, the place was not packed. It was kinda nice actually because my group received great service from the attentive waitresses and there was room to move around. They have pool tables (you have to pay but it's cheap) and countless TVs. The place was deceptively large and accommodated the crowd well. Probably not a place to impress a date, however the bar food was really good. Had a couple bad experiences here - but this was much better (yet why only 3 stars?), for two of us (burgers & a couple beers) it was ~$50... pricey considering the location - but perhaps too pricey for what it was. The convenience/proximity of the show we were going to made it great though. Bathrooms are rather truck stop & dank (not that I'm expecting fountains & rose petals tossed @ my feet) but they were dirty at a minimum. The only reason why I keep coming back here is because of its location; it's an easy place for me and my Red and Green Line friends to meet up and it's only a block away from my work. Meredith K. is totally not imagining the smell! I have NO idea what it is either. It smells like cumin-enhanced Clorox every time I pass through the doors. The food is usually pretty bland and please, save yourself a tenner and avoid the nachos at all cost. If I wanted a jar of Tostitos salsa dumped on grainy tortilla chips I would have done it myself. As far as service goes, I've never had bad luck with the doormen. They've always been friendly and accommodating. The waitresses/barteneders are really hit or miss; I've had some super helpful sweethearts and others have been downright wretched and/or careless. One night a waitress purposefully and repeatedly bumped into me and members of my party because we didn't want to sit down and order the bar's crappy food. (At first I thought I was crazy but others concurred that she was being a royal poop.) I am a fan of the relatively decent beer selection and I've never had to wait an exceptionally long time for a pool table to open up. I'd really like to give the place one star but these two things bump it up a notch, I suppose. read more

Horrible experience. Avoid this place. Read other reviews before going and figured I'd give the place a chance. When I walked in there was a door man slouched in a chair near the entrance. I asked if we had to wait to be seated or if we could sit anywhere. He grunted at me. Not kidding. Grunted. Place was crowded, filled with college kids and (just like the other reviewers commented) smelled like bleach or some sort of cleaner. BEST LOBSTER ROLL EVER. Came here for lunch with a big group (about 8) and was immediately drawn to the footlong lobster roll sandwich. For only $13.96 I wasn't sure what to expect, but this was amazing. The sandwich came on a toasted roll with huge chunks of delicious lobster pouring over the sides. My only complaint is that the roll could've been bigger but nonetheless, it was amazing. I am still dreaming about that sandwich. My boyfriend got a turkey sandwich, i forget the name but it was basically Thanksgiving on a roll - also amazing. All it was missing was gravy, but it was great sandwich - fresh turkey, huge roll, delicious stuffing. Next time I'm in Boston I will definitely come back here. read more

I didn't realize my go-to place for lunch when I'm in central Boston, the Silvertone, opened at 6:00 on Saturdays. Harrumph. So, we popped into the Beantown Pub, a place we've passed many times. Well, it was okay, but nothing spectacular. My burger was fair but cooked to a point beyond what I had requested (medium rare). My spouse had one of their sandwiches but he thought it was going to be grilled or toasted. I did like the idea of asking for a Sam Adams from the bar while gazing through the windows of the grave of Sam Adams, as a previous Yelper points out, but that experience is not enough of a draw to come back. I think this is my first 1 star review...but it was well deserved. Here is the play by play from this past Friday Evening: 5:55 PM - Sit down at table 6:00 PM - Order round of drinks (2 margaritas, a beer, and a special pumpkin cocktail) 6:20 - Waitress comes by to say that the drinks are delayed because they "can't find' the pumpkin liquer that goes in the pumpkin drink 6:25 - Margaritas and beer arrive 6:30 - Pumpkin Drink arrives. I say to the waitress "This drink will probably be the best I've ever had considering it took 30 minutes to make". Her response," Probably not. It looks awful". Thanks for the reassurance. It is god awful. It is evident that they never found the pumpkin liquer and decided to improvise yielding an awful result. It's a BAR. They get paid to make decent drinks in a reasonable amount of time. For a cheap divey bar, you can find MUCH better in the area. read more

Went here for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. I had the meat lover's omelet ($10.50) and it was really nicely done and came with home fries and toast. A nice breakfast to get you going before venturing out in to the city. My biggest complaint would be it seemed near-impossible to get a glass of water. When we initially ordered drinks I asked the waitress for water and an orange juice. About five minutes later I got the orange juice, no water. Towards the end of the meal (maybe a quarter of the food left on the plate) I asked a different waitress for a glass of water. Which I eventually got just before we got the check. read more

I was prepared to give this place a four star review, until this morning when we decided to try it for breakfast and it wasn't the experience we were expecting. We discovered Beantown Pub about 8 months ago. We were in town and we made it our mission to try as many lobster rolls as possible. Because how can you say who has the best lobster roll, if you don't have at least five of them, right? We ate at all the highly reviewed and best of places and once we got to Beantown and tried the lobster roll, we were sold! It was awesome, the Boston beans were great, the chowder is one of my favorites, the place is in a great location, and always bustling. Fast forward 8 months later and we came back. We had the same incredible dinner experience. The lobster roll and chowder are still by far my favorite. However, breakfast this morning was a disaster. Yelp and the sign on the door say they open at 10am. They don't. They open at 10:30am which caused much confusion to multiple groups of people standing outside the door. They either need to fix the sign, or one of their employees should be polite enough to come out and say something instead of complaining about it because we all walked in. That brings me to breakfast. I had the worst cup of coffee, so bad I sent it back. Then breakfast came out. My husband and I both got cold plain toast. I had to hunt the server down to ask for butter and jelly. When she did bring it, she brought chilled butter. Cold toast and chilled butter don't mix. My husbands omelette was so over cooked he was having a hard time cutting it and our potatoes tasted like they were fried in month old oil. I'd still come back for the dinner experience but never again for breakfast. read more
