COVID REVIEW: First time customer during the quarantine! Long line at Arizmendi? Pop by the Beanery for a good ol' cup of joe and maybe a pastry. Coffee is pretty reasonably priced for SF, and they offer cheaper prices for refills (not sure if this practice continues during COVID)! I had a black coffee, and it was nicely straightforward and un-acidic. They also offer a good looking selection of pastries from Semifreddi's. Was able to stop here for coffee on a Sunday afternoon and it was great! I appreciated that they were still open since another spot nearby had already closed for the day. It was pretty busy inside, but was able to order pretty quick and didn't have to wait very long for my drink to be ready. The iced latte is great! No burnt coffee taste at all. I wished there was more ice, but otherwise it was really good. My friend ordered their cold brew coffee and raved about it. Great coffee and amazing service! I got my typical almond milk latte and it was served just how I love it -- super fast, smooth, and with the perfect amount of foam. Many thanks to Ron, who took the effort to make conversation, putting a smile on my face and everyone else's. He even walked over to me to offer me the wifi password, seeing that I took out my laptop (outside!). Super considerate and super good vibes. Beautiful environment with outdoor seating. Stopped by here while waiting my poor little pup while he was at the emergency vet hospital a few shops away . They have a good rotation going for people to step in order and pick up and rotate themselves out. People here were nice and good about trying to stay socially distant from one another. I just got a double iced latte and I like how they offer to put brown sugar in the latte before pouring it over ice. Saves you from trying to add sugar to an already iced drink and just getting sandy, gritty sugar particles at the bottom of your cup that refuse to dissolve...amirite? Not sure it is the best latte in town, but definitely good, smooth espresso and quick, friendly service. Really good selection of coffee drinks on the menu and conveniently located across the street from the Sunday farmers market. I probably looked dumbfounded because the cashier gestured and told me to pour coffee from the coffee dispensers. There were four different types (one being decaf), and I selected the darkest roast. The coffee was SO GOOD! My favorite type of coffee is the taste where it has no sour and bitter notes. The french roast didn't include any of these, and after I took a sip, it left a lingering toasty aftertaste. Even my relative, who can't drink coffee because they don't like the bitter taste, was able to drink a share. Both the Lemon Blueberry scone and the everything bagel were good but nothing to get excited about. The menu has several bagel sandwich options but none with a protein. The tea selection was extensive, Stash and Numi. When coffee is dark yet flavorless it's a bit of a let down. I sampled several and none were more than average. If you're an average coffee drinker or you like to doctor it up with cream and/or sugar you'll be fine with the roast. Nothing here was bad mind you and the crowd is indicative of a place that will likely be in business for a long time. We were here early morning and they obviously have a crowd of regulars. An honest and genuine local coffee shop that's been in the neighborhood for a few decades. They roast their own beans and all coffee orders are made fresh. You can taste the quality and prices are reasonable also. I do wish they offered better options for tea. They use to sell loose leaf teas but switched to tea bags, maybe not enough tea drinkers? Offering a giant cup of hot water for one tea bag only gives a watered down tea, which isn't that enjoyable so I just get a coffee when I'm here. read more

I've walked by this coffee shop many times, but didn't get the chance to stop in until a few weekends ago. I have to say that they pull one of the best espressos I've ever had. I ordered a macchiato and it was exactly how I like it. Flavorful, dark, with a tiny bit of milk to cut the bitterness. No nonsense, the staff is friendly, and there's plenty of seating available. Stopped by after an afternoon at the Botanical Gardens to grab a cappuccino. The classic roasting machine exhibit at the entrance got me excited to try their espresso drinks knowing that the beans were roasted at the location but I left quite disappointed. The drink was quite bitter and didn't have that smooth finish I was hoping for. I don't enjoy dark roast where you need a hearty dose of sugar to make it drinkable. I've become a semi regular here. The coffee is good as the roast the beans on site an if you get the house coffee, $2.25-2.75, not crazy expensive. There was some time between brunch and an appointment so my lady friend and I headed over to Starbucks to get a hot cup of coffee and some work done. Unfortunately, it was absolutely packed and there were no seats inside at all. Instead, we decided to walk over to Beanery in hopes that there would be a place to sit indoors while enjoying a hot beverage. They've got a few dog-friendly outdoor tables off the sidewalk but it was way too wet to sit outside. The menu is kind of small and uninteresting so I ordered their special pumpkin latte. The pumpkin flavors were pleasant and there was a lot of spice in it which reminded me of the holidays. Is it actually pumpkin season right now? While their pumpkin latte was decent, the service was a bit rude and they don't offer WiFi nor accept credit cards. What's the point of a hanging out at a café on a rainy day if it doesn't offer internet access? Beanery is just alright in my book but isn't a place I can see myself going to regularly for the lack of internet and other things. I used to come here quite often. There are no outlets, making it a great place to socialize or read a book, but terrible for working on a laptop. The drinks are fine. However, customer service here is lacking. The young gentleman (late 20s-mid 30s) can be quite rude at times. I have had mixed interactions with him (some good/some bad) and have observed the same with other guests. I thought it was just a San Francisco thing at first, but it isn't. The guy is just a dick. But having moved away and with time to reflect from the objectivity that distance has given me, I have a much different view. FIrst and foremost -- their coffee was excellent...always. I also never had a chance to thank both the owner and Cruz, who was without exception the best -- always upbeat and a perfectionist. I rarely leave reviews and I don't think that I have EVER felt inspired to leave a negative review. That said, the manager here inspired me! And a lovely employee earned both of the two stars! We came in and, yes, the three of us did take longer than average to choose given that this was our first time. STRIKE ONE: The manager barely acknowledged us other than initially with a glum look and some extra huff. In contrast, the employee was lovely, handed a customer behind us a cup so he could fill his filter cup ASAP and, (more about this later) went outside to help a man who had tipped on his bike and hit his (luckily helmeted) head. STRIKE TWO: The lovely employee had put out plates with two of our three pastries when the manager snapped, "Take your food. There are people waiting. " (If she had said, "person," it would have been at least accurate - there was one person waiting amicably.) STRIKE THREE: The pastries were tough and chewy - not what one expects from croissant dough. Either they were using a way subpar bakery, or they were unmarked and undiscounted day-old - I would put money on the latter. STRIKE FOUR (I know, I have two stars because of the wonderful employee): Remember the bike accident? We went across the street to see how aware the man was. He had signs of a concussion and even lost consciousness briefly which spurred our calling 911. My husband commented on how nice the employee at The Beanery had been and walked the man's bike across to ask if they would keep it there for the injured man's wife to pick up later. Manager: "We don't have room!" which meant our track-running son raced around the corner to stop the injured man's wife (who had just driven off) and we were able to load the bike into their car which only delayed her being able to drive to the Trauma Center by a few minutes. Unfortunately the house espresso lacks extra rich Crema we've all come accustomed to. A shame since supporting a local roaster is top priority. I like this cafe a lot. Definitely has the hipster vibe like other reviews say. Impressions: the coffee has bold flavor and it was strong-- I felt jittery after. The location is small, so you will welcome sitting next to strangers. You will be lucky to get a seat as it was rather busy and lots of customers going in and out.
