This place has hideous service everytime I go there! They take forever or they just ignore you altogether. I have tried to go there for lunch and even though I tell them that I have a limited amount of time to spend there, they don't seem to care. The other major issue is that if you go there with a small group of people , they always seem to bring each person's meal out at completely different times. Your food will get cold while you wait for them to serve the rest of your party. It is a shame since it is in such a prime location. What a waste of space! read more

I have been nagging my husband to go here with me ever since we walked by a month a go. The Bayfront Restaurant is in a great location, in a new building, and it looks great inside. We went on a Thursday night. The service was not great. The bus boy did great... we we're thirsty and he kept our water glasses full. However, the waitress was slow... granted there was a large table that sent back one entree... lobster, so that probably slowed everything down a little. We stuck with the sushi menu...and by the way I agree with everyone else in saying that having both Italian and Sushi is weird. The sushi was good. We had the golden dragon roll and the flower roll. We also ordered the noodle bowl with shrimp tempura. The tempura was great... the noodle bowl had no flavor. Anyways, I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone! I was very disappointed... there is much better sushi in Humboldt County. The Ritz should have never morphed into the Bayfront! read more

I had called at 4:00 pm to make sure that this place was open until 9:30pm. I drove all the way from Trinidad Ca to Rio Dell Ca to get my sister who had just got into town so we could go out for sushi. When I got her we drove back up to Eureka Ca just to be ignored at the door. After about 5 minutes of standing at the door a man finally walked up and said they had decided to close early! The menu is large but very confusing! Its half sushi and half italian which makes us think that they really have no chefs, just sushi cooks and a few guys in the kitchen who know how to prep food and put it on a steam line to serve 6 hours later. The server has HORRIBLE! We ended up tipping our hostess instead because she was the only one who gave us anything resembling customer service. The waitress had the "you're bothering me, what do you want" attitude and never bothered to check on us after dropoping off the food. The sushi was pretty good even though someone in their kitchen thinks that California Rolls are made with bay shrimp, not crab meat...must be cheaper to buy pre-cooked frozen shrimp than fresh crab meat. I also got the Chicken Teriyaki which was fairly disappointing. The portion was huge, which was delightful, but it was room temperature and sauce tasted like it came from a jar. The atmosphere was very nice but between the pre-cooked, pre-canned taste of the food and the bad service, I give this place two stars. Im from the bay area so maybe my standards are higher, but if I'm paying $14 for an entree, I expect it to be freshly cooked and hot. read more

Jan 11 2013 and did I say it was FREEZING? horrible Terrible experience last night. Heater not working. No apologies or attempt to make us comfortable. Freezing - jackets coats AND blankets needed. Wait staff slow and poor service (wrong dishes, beverages never brought). Manager never approached our table. No free tea or warm beverages offered. Not even a token discount on bill. VERY poor experience. Won't go back without an apology from management I have had bad food or poor service at other places, and chalked it up to a bad night or learning experience. Nothing has ever stunned me so much to leave a review. Update 1-14-13 - to date the only response from management is 'you could have gone somewhere else" They didn't tell us when seating us the heat wasn't working - sure, let's move 12 people to another restaurant after ordering . . . We were out shopping Sunday afternoon and saw Bayfront Restaurant with it's beautiful view. I've never had sushi (I know, way behind the times) so decided to try it. I asked our waitress a hundred questions. She was so patient with me, explained sashimi vs sushi and teppanyaki. She knew the menu inside out. I will most certainly be back. I walked in and ordered a few rolls "Togo". I had to wait 30 minutes while the restaurant only had 1 table. Once I opened my lunch I was disappointed to find they forgot the green onion on Joes Special, they used too much rice and they drenched their spicy mayonnaise on everything, even my simple hamachi hand roll! Plus, the sushi chef failed to trim the bloody red meat from the hamachi on the hand roll so I pulled it off before eating. Honestly, I paid 30$ for the flavors of mayonnaise and rice. I've been here a few times now; the restaurant is in a gorgeous location and they views of the boardwalk and the bay are really nice. The decor is really swanky-feeling and the inclusion of local artist's work is a great touch. And it's not very expensive at all. That said the service leaves a lot to be desired. The last time I was there it took the hostess a good 10 minutes to even acknowledge us. After that you can feel neglected by your server sometimes, even if it doesn't seem that busy. As another reviewer says the chopsticks are pretty cheap and I've had a few splintery pairs. I'll probably be back because of the good food and the fact that they are open Sundays but I hope service improves in the future. read more

I highly recommend NOT to order the Italian food. I haven't tried the sushi but I hear it's good. Not sure why Italian is on the menu at all. The gnocchi was swimming in some kind of broth-like sauce that tasted like Campbell's soup and was surrounded by cheap frozen vegetables. Definitely couldn't eat more than a bite or two. Also, the chicken katsu was mushy and cold. Maybe the sushi is good but I have a hard time believing anything good could come out of that kitchen after my experience. read more

Our server Jessica was very attentive and nice. We ordered a large tomodachi and at first got just straight sake. Ordered the thailander roll, volcano roll, and beef teriyaki (originally it was supposed to be the lol I but they were out). All good, came out one at a time. Thailander was fantastic. Volcano roll had way too much mayo on it but still ok. Beef teriyaki=horrid. Meat tasted sour like it had gone bad and instead of cooking in the sauce, they just smothered the beef with sauce. Didn't taste at all like teriyaki. We sent it back and had it taken off the bill after one bite. I have come here for years, but with each time the food is worse and worse. We went here based on reviews and the problem of my wife being vegan and I'm a meat eater. I was skeptical at first, Italian/Japanese isn't the first combination that comes to mind, but it looked like a nice upscale place so we went in. At first we were seated near a very noisy group and were ready to leave however when our waitress got to us she immediately sensed the problem and our discomfort and she moved us to a quieter area. Kapua, our waitress, is the number one reason this place gets a five star, she came up with great vegan suggestions for my wife and I was easily pleased with a steak, she had a gracious and friendly attitude and enjoyed conversing with us without neglecting her other duties. Dinner came without an overly long wait, my steak was perfectly cooked and my wife enjoyed her Harvey Roll and vegetable tempura, she couldn't finish her tempura so I did and it was very good. Again five stars due to Kapua a real gem who made a long day of driving melt away with a great attitude. read more

Last time we were there the server seemed pretty clueless about the menu and how to pronounce things but she was so friendly we didn't mind all that much. However some training is much needed here. Love it here and have gone many times, I usually get Japanese but sometimes their chicken:). My husband and grown children enjoy it here as well. I'm disabled and need to sit in a 'no arms' chair to wait until a table opens up, but they usually don't have one for me. I'd go to The Bayfront more often if those chair/s were available. read more

I was entertaining a friend from out of town and we went to Bayfront. This is my second visit. The first time I went, it was nice. I was excited to see so many people packed in. This time, my experience was awful. We were seated right away and our orders were taken promptly. We arrived a little after five p.m. and the place was pretty empty. I ordered a sushi roll and the antipasti platter and my friend ordered the ravioli. The sushi came first, and it was fine. I thought it was strange that the sushi arrived before the appetizer. The antipasti platter came so late, I was already finished with the sushi. The antipasti platter was a disappointment for $16. It consisted of a few cured meats and some olives. No bread, no spreads. I've never had an antipasti platter that didn't at least have crackers. There was a lot of meat, but I would have gladly had less meat and some crackers or a slice of cheese or a carrot or something. My friend's ravioli was no where to be found. The server didn't give us any updates about his food or anything, even after we were waiting for close to half an hour. My friend asked the server if there was any bread or anything to precede the ravioli. It was so strange to us that Italian food would be served with no bread or salad. She said that bread was not a part of the meal unless it was requested. So, he requested it. She disappeared into the kitchen and came back about five minutes later and said his bread would be another two minutes. When she returned with his bread, there was no butter with it and the server didn't offer any. We called her back to the table and asked for butter. She responded by saying she would have to go and check. She brought the butter and we asked how long the ravioli would be. She explained that they had to boil the water because the water wasn't hot. Who knew you had to boil water to make ravioli? The only explanation I could think of as to why on earth it would take so long is that the chef was in the back learning how to make pasta for the first time. When his ravioli finally arrived, we were pretty over the whole place. There were seven small to medium sized raviolis on his plate for $14. We immediately asked for boxes and the check. She didn't seem to be interested in our experience, she didn't ask us how we were doing or anything. Apparently, she could only carry one small box at a time because getting the boxes required more than one trip to the back. As we were boxing up our food, we expressed our disappointment to the server. She was uninterested and giggled as we told her how ridiculous it was that the pasta didn't come with a side of bread. We also complained that my friend was not offered black pepper on his pasta. She seemed to not understand that it is customary to serve bread with butter or offer black pepper in a restaurant. We tried comparing the black pepper to having soy sauce with sushi. She pointed to the soy sauce on the table. We told her that at Mazotti's, they serve salad and bread with dinner. She said she had never been to Mazotti's. She was not helpful or even mildly apologetic, she just giggled. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Eureka. The quality is always high, the view is always lovely and the staff is always kind. The pairing of sushi and Italian is perfect because my husband can eat delicious ravioli while I eat a volcano roll. Add a glass of prosecco and a cucumber salad and it is a perfect lunch by the bay. You are probably paying for the location, but late in the evening you really can't see the water, so what's the point? We ordered NY strip steak medium rare, which came out well done. It tasted as if it may have come from a fast food restaurant, completely over-seasoned (probably to cover the taste of the meat!) and the vegetables probably came out of one of those steamer bags (just like someone mentioned in another review). I have eaten here several times, for sushi and for the first time tonight tepanyaki. The chef tonight told our table that all of their food comes from three places-Costco, Cisco and China (they have a rep for food from China), so they are serving food with a very low quality and it matches the quality of the cooks as well. I am pregnant and ordered my filet well done it was med rare. My boyfriend got lobster and filet for $60, so we figured it would have to be fabulous. The chef totally forgot his bring the filet out so he found it appropriate to yell across the restaurant to a lady counting money at a table next to us (terrible etiquette for a restaurant) to go grab him a filet. The lobster was not good at all cooked with garlic butter and soy sauce and topped with mozzarella cheese? WTF? Steamed rice was terrible dry, salad dressing tasted like an orange creamsicle, shrimp cooked in a terrible sauce and the dipping sauces for the meats was terrible! The chef said the sauces were honey mustard and sweet and sour, what??? Have the people that own this place ever even been to a successful tepanyaki/sushi restaurant? Nothing was even mediocre tonight except for my water glass staying full. I told myself I would never eat here after the horrible sushi and service I had about 6 months ago but my pregnant cravings called for tepanyaki. I have never had a worse tepanyaki experience in my life nothing was good I don't know how this place even stays open, bad food and hardly any customers in the whole place....bunk restaurant!! read more

I'm a student in HSU, honestly the pricing is a bit expensive for me, therefore, I only take my girlfriend and my several roommates to this place after some big events, such as graduations, exams, important school projects, etc. But this place never let me down, the pricing worth every penny. So I literally just called to get lunch to go and all I wanted was Miso Soup and the tempura tofu roll. They didn't answer the phone the first time I called it just rang for about a minute and a half until I hung up checked the number and called again. Once again the phone rang for minutes before finally someone answered. When I proceeded to ask to get an order to go she tells me that they are just too busy and they aren't taking any to-go orders. This just doesn't make sense to me, you will turn away money from someone all you have to do is put in the order and get it together for me to come pay for and leave how is this a rational form of business. This is just absurd. I will no longer go here this is the third bad incident i have had here in the last month, which is such a shame because the have the best tempura tofu roll and miso soup...looks like I'm going to have to buy my food elsewhere. read more

Teppan Yaki is a good time in general, made extra special by our wonderful chef Brett! This restaurant performed a miracle for us by making room for us in a fully booked restaurant. We settled for the sit down side no problem. We made a reservation and were fine with sitting in the main dining area. It was homecoming week-end at HSU and we were up visiting my son and his roommates. Not more than an hour after we made our reservation, they called with an opening for us on the Teppan Yaki side. This is by far my son's favorite meal, and he had no idea we had found this restaurant. You should have seen his face when he saw where we were going to eat, that in itself was worth the money. It wasn't inexpensive, it was my son, his two roommates, my husband and I, but it was worth it! Best server I've had any where in a long time really made me feel relaxed and enjoyed my time. We got a volcano roll and it was Ideal. Not to pricey and its a nice romantic place for dates. Before I arrived I was a little skeptical of what an Italian-Japanese hybrid restaurant would be like. Turned out what I thought it would be like: a confused combination of food and service. For starters, the menu was poorly planned. On one page was the italian lunch menu, then an unannounced dinner section only denoted by the absence of cents in the prices, followed on another page by the Japanese portion, cents back in there. No beverage section that I could find, even though there was an extensive wine collection in my view in the same room. Also, there was no explanation of the Italian dishes besides what came with it, which led me to believe that a crab burger would have both beef and crab. But that comes in later. Secondly, the staff wasn't sure whether they wanted to give us a pitcher of water or refill it themselves. Half of the time a waiter would refill our glasses (always after they had been dry for a while, though) and the other half we had a jar of water to pour for ourselves. The soups and salads came out more or less together and were pretty tasty, if a little skimpy in volume. The clam chowder was good, but a friend who ordered the fried crab was a little turned off by some strange sections of it, and as before, it was a pretty small serving for the price. As our meal proceeded we were served in a random order and never together. Granted, we were a fairly large group, but I don't think more than a quarter of our party was eating at any time. Personally, I ordered the Philadelphia sushi and a crab burger. The sushi was great; well presented, very fresh and tasty, and finally a good amount of food. The crab burger, however, was another story. I was promised chips with it but got literally about 8, not enough to make the plate appear full even with crafty placement. The burger itself was mostly tomato and avocado, with a little off-tasting fried crab thrown in. No beef to be seen anywhere, much to my disappointment. I'm glad I also got sushi or I would have left hungry. This one was definitely not worth the money. I did not order any dessert fearing inordinate serving for the prices, and for the first time since the sushi I was happy with my decision. My friends received humorously small portions of ice cream with sophomoric attempts at fancy presentation. Here again the lack of description on the menu disappointed us; my already off-put fried crab-ordering friend was dismayed at the unmentioned raspberries, a fruit which she despises, on her vanilla ice cream. I was happy to eat them for her, but the sauce they were in remained on her dairy treat. All in all a decent dinner, one filled with mostly tasty foods but plagued by small portions, a few funky tastes, and surprising (in a bad way) dishes. If you find yourself here, go with the sushi. Everyone was satisfied with it and it is the only item that will leave you full and happy with the price you payed for it. read more

Went in the on a Sunday afternoon. Food was good, not outstanding. Prices were fair. The view is one of my favorites. It took a little bit of time for our food when it wasn't that busy.
