I will never again do business with Bat Comics. The website projects the image of a friendly, helpful local neighborhood store with many resources for local collectors so I went in today seeking advice on what details to include in a database inventory of my large but poorly characterized comic collection. I explained this to the friendly clerk, who then brought out the owner to speak with me. Unfortunately, he turned out to be the rudest, most disrespectful and dismissive person I've ever encountered at a store. He launched into an angry loud diatribe against me, apparently thinking i was trying to sell him comics, which was never my intent. Without ever trying to find out why I'd come in, he vented angrily, then turned his back on me and walked away. I've never felt more disrespected and misunderstood in any local business. Such a person really should find a different line of work. read more

This short angry little man, yelled at me ! I brought in some comics to see if I could sell them. I pulled out a pristine Mega Man issue 1. It sells for a good price on ebay @ a price of normally 210. With a CGC. Mine doesn't have it but definitely a 9.5. This man said I can't even sell that for a dollar glanced at it didn't touch it pull it out of the cover. I kind of chuckled and said "Really! Thats crazy cause its selling for 210 online"! He screamed "Great! Then go sell it online"! Cause he through his arm as he was speaking! Like wow! I will never shop here i have in the past but I never will again! An i highly recommend not going here! I called up Collectors Ink who although couldn't help in a sale were NICE an jovial! This place is cool! They have a wide variety of MTG sets and Pokemon sets to choose from! I wasn't going to get much at first, but I saw the new Lorcana set! The prices in general were decent. Nothing was that overpriced. The owner of the store and the staff also greeted me and made sure I was taken care of. Dope place overall. read more

Me and my friends after the camp fire were looking for a new place to play after our place up in Paradise was shut down for obvious reasons. We called around and called Bat Comics & Games to see if we can set up a table to play at on our usual meet up day, they knew we were coming, we had a reservation, we all showed up, and the owner told us "You don't have a reservation" and then told us "You're not customers you're not allowed to play here" The guy was straight up rude, told us to pretty much buy something or get out, I was going to buy a Skitarii Start Collecting box because my army was lost in the fire, but no way after being told off by this guy. Go anywhere else but here, its a local gaming shop that doesn't provide the one thing a local gaming shop is supposed to offer its community, a place to play, and the prices weren't competitive with nearby shops. read more

I'm going to start off by saying that I know nothing of comics so this review is mostly for individuals who like board games and quirky items. Upon walking in I was immediately greeted by a friendly worker (her name escaped me) and was told if she could help with anything. It is huge and full of small trinkets for anime fans and they even have a wall full of books that kids can get into. My boyfriend found an awesome Bones Unicorn model I could paint(4.50) , and while browsing before leaving I found the cutest sticker(.25). I will comment that some things are wee bit on the expensive side of the spectrum. I totally would've grabbed a Kiki's Delivery Service necklace if was maybe 10% cheaper. So my friends, the store is an all together a well stocked nerd shop with fun personnel that are just as fun as they are helpful. Though I read a review that said otherwise, I recommend that you come in and look around. read more

This really is the only option for comics in downtown, which is a shame because it could be better. It is a pretty big store with a large selection of new comics and boxed back issues. There is a big wall with a lot of the higher end back issues on display. All the comics are kinda organized by publisher then by character. (I.e. all the batman stuff is in one place, etc.) They also have a very large selection of board games, t shirts and card games. It is hard to find single issues that are more than a few months old without them being marked up, which would be fine if I was buying these at a gas station rack or a Barnes & Noble, but this is a comic book shop. The point of these shops is to make me want to not shop at those other places, and in the handful of times I've been there, this place has not delivered. I've been going to speciality shops kinda like this one since I was a kid. That being said, in smaller places like this, customer service makes a huge difference. And as long as the owner Trent doesn't help you... you will likely get it. Its very clear that Trent has very little customer service skills and definitely sees this as a business and doesn't really want to be bothered unless you are willing to shell out money. What he fails to see as kids and regular customers see places like this as a hang out. There is an understanding in nerd culture that people that buy your products are fans and not just customers, and there is a clear difference where that line is. So this "customer" will not likely be shopping there, so I can be a "fan" somewhere else. read more

Went in looking for an M15 deck builder kit. After a quick look around the store, I asked if they had any, which they didn't. No big deal, until the owner asked in a condescending tone "do you even KNOW what's in a deck builders kit?" I told him "a bunch lands, commons and uncommons, a few rares and boosters". He flat out replied "it does NOT have any boosters". I got what I was looking for from another store and low and behold, it had boosters and everything else I expected. It's hard to give the store a bad review since I've been shopping there for years, and his employees are actually really cool and helpful. But with so many other options in town, there's no reason to put up with bad service. read more

Chock full of goodies and fun stuff, like the knick-knack section of an Urban Outfitters. Just remember: they're graphic novels, not comics; and it's pronounced "mahn-guh." I called this store looking to buy Pokemon Booster Packs and did not expect to receive the amount of negativity that I did. A person who I assume is the store owner picked up the call. During the entire conversation, all I got was a negative tone of impatience. When I asked him to tell me the names of the booster sets he was selling, he responded strongly with "no, I have customers to help." But what about me? Am I not a customer? The one explanation I can think of for this person's negative humor is that maybe he had a long line of people waiting to make purchases. But if that's the case, then why not just ask to put me on hold first thing? Either way, this person treated me with a very "screw-off" kinda attitude. I'm definitely going to stick with places that treat all their customers fairly and with respect. read more

I come here every time I'm in town. Great costumer service and great prices. Two things that definitely keep me coming back. Even if I don't get anything, they always have a lot of cool stuff to look at. The last time I was here, the cashier was super duper nice and friendly and made my experience even better. I paid 200% overprice on MTG singles from the store. If i had the time i would of ordered from TCG, but i thought i would put my business in a local store because they had the cards i wanted to get for my friends b-day the next day. BIG MISTAKE, i almost felt like i got taken advantage of. I do not regret getting him these cards, but i regret putting my trust in this store. I even gave them a price sheet from TCG, and they promptly ignored it claiming overhead, organizing the cards for excel spread sheet would add to the cost. SINCE WHEN? Every single MTG store i have ever visited in my 15 years of playing this game i have never in my life ever heard this being uttered from the mouth of a owner. $5 worth of cards for $15 does not seem like a lot, but its the fact they had a straight face on even when presented with research and evidence. Also, the staff doesn't seem very knowledgeable. They don't even know when the comic books come out. They seem to be out of stock consistently. I give it two stars because one time that I have been in there I had a decent experience. Besides that, the only thing I find here are generally rude, pretentious, and irritating staff. Trying to find the Top Shelf comics there, I picked up one and began leafing through it deciding whether or not I wanted to purchase it. I liked this store quite a bit. They had a LOT of toys, and as I try to stay faithful to my regular shop (only my regular shop doesn't carry toys), so toys are typically what I peruse in other comic shops. The girl behind the counter watched us with friendly interest, when she wasn't flipping through the comic in front of her, and I knew that she was very willing to help if we happened to have a question. The selection of comics seemed typical, nothing too obscure, but certainly nothing blatantly missing. read more

Let me start by saying I was a satisfied customer for 15 years and 3 different locations before I just couldn't bring myself to go back. The employees are great, even if they don't always have the most experience with comic books and gaming they've always treated me with courtesy and respect. This applies ONLY to employees. The owner is another story. I was involved with tabletop gaming for quite some time. My experience with Trent soured when it came to light that the FREE promotional items and tournament prizes he was sent from multiple gaming companies went straight to his eBay account rather than the players. Not a big deal for a majority of the customer base but it speaks volumes of the man's character when you choose to pull items away from the prize pool for miniatures games, trading card games, children's card games, and anything else just to make an extra buck. (an act that violates most of those games' organizer contracts) Only made worse that I found out it had been happening for years. There are better locations for comics, toys, figures, anime, manga, gaming, and anything else Bat Comics specializes in. Nothing I've seen there is worth giving the man my hard earned money. In summary, The employees/selection/uniqueness, decent, 4 stars. Owner I wouldn't spit on if he was on fire, 0 stars. read more

Good selection of board games, small selection of small press comics, high prices, staff is rather hit and miss. Dust is plentiful, front window desperately needs a tuneup, (the goal should not be to stuff as much stuff as possible into your window space), and you don't really feel welcome there. I prefer Collectors Ink, where the shop is small and it's out of the way, but the staff is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. read more

If you are looking for toys and collectibles and stuff, this is the place to go. Their prices tend to be a bit on the high side but I guess thats what you have to pay for being in the middle of downtown. If you want comics, eh, there are better places in Chico. Their comics selection is merely okay and they don't have much at all in terms of back-issues or vintage comics. The staff is a mixed bag. I've had some people be quite nice to me and some be complete jerks. I've been going there off and on for about 12 years (since they were still on main street, across from The Bookstore) and they still don't even know my name :( read more

It's amazing how when you walk into a store and kindly ask someone if they have a certain item, they not only respond in disgust, but treat you as if your disrupting their apparently busy day (even tho there were no other patrons in the store, and I now know why). Customer service is not a priority of the vertically challenged man that helped us, who must've been standing on a stack of phone books so he could see us over the counter. I asked about a comic that I wanted, and even tho they had it, he decided to express his negative personal opinions about not only the book itself, the author, but why I shouldn't waste my time. Saying this man was rude would be putting it lightly. They might think about new ownership, or re-staffing if they ever plan on having a lucrative store with any kind of customer service. read more

I've been buying my Dungeons and Dragons supplies here for years, and I am very thankful to finally say that I will never be shopping here again. Chico Magic down the street now stocks D&D products and I couldn't be happier to finally have an option in Chico other than the sad reality that is Bat Comics. The owner (Trent) completely ruins what could be an excellent experience in a store full of great items. Nearly everything is obviously up charged, and almost every interaction I've had with Trent has been cold, short, and met with a condescending tone. His demeanor sends the message that he does not have time for my stupid questions about the products I AM WILLING TO GIVE HIM MONEY FOR. Weird little things about the store also bother me. For instance, there is a charge for the sleeve when you buy a comic. He's already charging more than normal for the book, why should I have to pay for the plastic around it, too? All of the Magic: The Gathering products are grossly overpriced, as well, possibly the most of any items in the shop. It seems that Trent only is concerned about making money, which as an owner it makes sense for the business aspect to be a concern, but this is a GAMES STORE. It should be fun when I come here, and it never is. Every time I am in the store, I feel increasingly pressured to quickly buy something and get out as Trent watches me browse. I have not experienced the following personally, but I have been told by friends that they have been asked to leave the store for browsing and not buying anything. Seriously, what a jerk. I come here a lot and I really love the staff, always friendly and the store has great stuff. Great variety of cards, games, comics, graphic novels, figures, etc. It will fill all your nerdy needs. The only thing I would complain about is the manager/owner. He is rude and tries as hard as he can to make you feel unwelcome, even going as far as discouraging his staff from talking to customers. I hope someday he sells the store to someone who will actually appreciate the people who support his business. read more

When I came in the guy asked me how I was doing and if I needed anything and I told him I was interested in finishing my collection of age of ultron. He was very helpful in making sure that I got what I was looking for even if he didn't have it. People give this place a bad review when they have a bad experience but not enough people give good reviews when they have a good experience.
