A large selection. Many new records, and some used ones. Pricing is excellent; about the best I've found in my travels to stores in California and beyond. This is the coolest corner record shop that has something for everyone. New or old records, little posters, big posters, stickers, CDs....the owner has been running the store since the late 70s....LOVE this place! I always find some treasure to buy. read more

Possibly the worst record store in the US. No new arrival bin. The owner wants you to spend all day going thru every bin. Hands-down the neatest little spot in Chico. There's really nothing else quite like Melody Records. It takes you to a completely different era, back to a simpler time when we would peruse for our next music selection from an actual store rather than the internet. The store is dark, long and narrow and very reminiscent of old-school record stores. There is an incredible selection of vinyl, not to mention the myriad accessories. You'll find music-related memorabilia and posters amongst other artisan treasures, but that's not all. Walking to the very back of this store will take you into a secondary room which is full of even more treasures. Stickers, beads, crystals, small gift items. You will certainly be in awe here. Definitely worth a look if you ever find yourself in downtown Chico. read more

This is more of a constructive criticism, as this is the only record store Chico has. The lack of a "new arrival" section might seem like a small gripe but it would make finding stuff on release days easier, and its kinda just a staple of record stores. Especially since they don't have a computer system to look up what they have in stock. Not trying to talk bad on the employees (they've always been very nice) but if you ask if they have something specific, they're not sure. Which isn't a huge deal, I like searching but it could just make things more modern. It's all love and wanting the best for the only record store in our area read more

Wall to wall records and some hippie things, oh my. For a college town, this record shop is decently priced with a good selection of new and used vinyl, CD's and random hippie stuff. The staff seem pretty knowledgable and they were playing Pavement's "Slanted and Enchanted" when I walked in. While I didn't walk away with some rare finds, I like visiting, browsing and seeing what's hot in the area. Prices seemed within reason but I was looking for certain titles which I didn't find the day I stopped there. Overall, this shop made me hum some melodies I hadn't hummed in years. If I'm in the area again, I'll probably stop inside. I just can't resist a good record store. read more

I just found out all their good vinyl doesn't get sold in the store but online. Nice community service. Also what is with no new arrival bin? I'd be in 4 times a week if you had one. Smells like the 90's in here. Like, seriously. Heavy dose of nostalgia in here. Large selection of records, decent selection of CDs. A bit overpriced - some of the new records were $20-$60. Some tshirts and stickers and hippy trinkets too. Always good to support a brick and mortar music shop. Worth a stop. read more

RACIST STAFF!!!! I have been to melody records multiple times with my friends and have been greeted with nice and welcoming staff. This last week me and a few friends came into the store looking for posters and we were approached by the blonde lady in the front, with glasses, who proceeded to yell at my friend that it was "bullshit" and other vulgar words that she was fixing her mask. She continued to raise her voice in a rude tone and called her Felecia which has racist undertones and made us all very uncomfortable. She then made my other friend leave her records and posters on her side while she went to pay for her tapestry on the other side (everyone else was walking around both stores with items from each) and when my friend went back to pay for the posters and records, the lady questioned if she paid for it although two minutes prior she saw her cross over to pay and even grabbed her stuff while she was paying to take it to the front. after my friend confirmed she did, the lady proceeded to walk to the back of the store to ask the other side if tapestries were paid for. my friend told her she was acting very rude after the lady made a smart remark about being safe and the lady proceeded to flip my friends and I off inside while we were walking to the car outside the window. This was such an unpleasant experience that I dont want to return to the store. read more

I love this little place and am sad I live so far away now. It's your typical record store with a cute bead/hippie/random stuff in the back. Filled with mostly older records, you can snag some good finds here. They also often have cool screened posters up on the wall for sale. I wish I lived closer! Legit little sound hole. Not only do they stock necessary catalogue, but there is also an impressive scope of less-lauded selections and local jams for the digging. Plus, I rarely get excited by poster collections yet I became oddly fixated on their wall offerings. I think this distracted me from the vinyl bins by way of a prominently placed poster-sized photo of the Bikini Atoll Atomic Bomb Test which just goes to show: record stores are next to antique boutiques for their "anything goes" way of diverting one's attentions from everyday mundanities. Where do you go for music. Well mostly on line, but try a record shop in a college town. Chico's Melody Records has tons of vintage vinyl! I went on a sunday the store was quiet a little music was playing on a high quality turntable. The posters hanging from the ceiling reminded me of the small poster/ record shops of the 70's and 80's. They had a vinyl record selection that was bigger than any I had seen for a while. They deal mostly in used vinyl and CD music. There were many titles that I would have concidered rare. We bought alot of music at very reasonable prices. I thought it was a good deal I EVEN BOUGHT THE GRATEFUL DEAD POSTER! If you are really into music old and new you need to check it out if you have the chance. read more

Great place. I go here all the time and spend a lot of money here. Great finds and some obscure stuff as well. Their vinyl selection is bigger than their CD and Tape (although they still have a decent amount).Contains many genres: rock, pop, punk, indie, soul, country, soundtracks.... When I moved to Chico, I hit up this place several times over the first few weeks, and the vibe is great, the selection is great, and the pricing is really good too. I'm not sure how much new inventory they bring in, but I typically check in there every few months and seem to find something cool on cassette or vinyl (the only tolerable forms of music media in my opinion). I went to this store to sell first-press original Beatles records from the sixties. I collected them from age 19 to now, 28, and they were expensive and dear to me. Each was worth around 20 to 50 dollars, according to online sources. I also had a triple record set, and a couple no-so-valuble records. However 5 of the records were worth around 150 dollars total. I know that stores that buy records from people have to make a profit and give you around half of what they sell it for. But this jerk, the owner, offered me 18 DOLLARS for ALL of them and my memories. I wept as I took it, because I HAD to take it to pay my phone bill. As I tried to negotiate, respectfully, I cried. Ultimately settling for the 18 bucks. He saw me cry with regret and DID NOT GIVE A CRAP AT ALL. He plans to sell these records for TRIPLE what he bought them for. For example "Help", a first press from '66 he gave me 4 dollars for. He plans to sell it for 30 dollars. He is a cheap, money grubbing aweful person. As a Catholic woman I do not wish him anything bad, as Karma will catch up to him. Please don't support this store, if you can, avoid it. You are better served going to ebay or craigslist. read more
