Visited September 26th..see receipt. This place is off Broadway in Chico. After having amazing suishi at the Rawbar we walked over to this shop which is just a few steps away from the restaurant. They have so many toys! Stuffed animals! Puzzles! Jewelry! They have house decor items and some yummy smelling candles! This place is packed with so much stuff that the kiddos will have a blast looking at all the toys! You could spend hours in here! They also have nostalgic items which I love ( bought a mood ring and some funny gum). In the back of the shop is the Yo Yo Museum which houses the largest Yo Yo and Yo Yo memorabilia! Bird in hand name sounds like a place where you can hold birds. Irony to the name, this is a gift a shop and a museum. You can find the largest Yo-yo. Great place to get books, gifts for friends and families . We ended up purchasing a board game. Excellent service. Parking - street metered parking. read more

This place is the definition of an identity crisis. It took me a solid 10 min to figure out what theyre actually about and the answer is toys! Theyre a toy store with some random soaps and old lady stuff in the front when you walk in. If you need a good gift for a kid this would be the place to come! This store has always been a gem of Chico. One of the only places in town that I can find postcards. And I have always gone in to find a fully staffed store with knowledgeable, helpful employees. I often come in with very random requests like "I need a thank you gift for a friend who is a professor and is hosting a game show for us..." Little did I know what exceptional service I was about to receive! Thad responded to my email right away and confirmed he could include a note and would not include the price in the order. We have supported this store for years. Every time we come in we always make purchases.The last 2 times we were in this store we were not allowed to use the bathroom after spending quite a bit. Simply because they didn't want to unlock it. The first instance we had to rush our toddler daughter down then street to a bathroom because the worker wouldn't unlock the door. The second instance was this last weekend. We had our family and my two 90+ year old grandmas. We were not allowed to use their facilities, when we were paying customers. It's just wrong. They had at least 5 people working at the time. There is no reason for this. We all spent money and we are kind people. Usually I don't write reviews like this because I like to see the best in people but this was not okay. This might not seem significant to others but it was really troubling for us. We will not be returning. There are other stores in downtown Chico that deserve the business! Just sharing our experience. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else. read more

What a wonderful throwback in toy stores. There is so much stuff. We came for the yoyo museum. There aer few places with so much available yoyo items. Come Saturday afternoons for the Chico Yoyo Club. This is a great opportunity for even the newest of players to learn as well as a place for champions to enjoy. read more

If I could leave a lower rating best believe I would. My sister was profiled at this store for stealing when she only purchased a STICKER and a keychain. An old raggedy lady was following us around the store as soon as we walked in. She then approached my sister in a rude manner and demanded to search her bag. She seemed very unapologetic when I confronted her about the situation. It's insane to be treated like this especially when we did absolutely nothing wrong. I walked in with a list of 6 grandchildren with their ages for our family Xmas in July. In no time I had two clerks help me pick the greatest age appropriate gifts. 30 minutes later I walked out with three bags full, and Bam! Xmas 2019 is done! However, they forgot to give me one of the bags ( yo-yos). When I called Jody insisted on driving them to my house. I live in Vacaville! No problem, she said, I have family there. 8pm that evening she showed up with my bag. Now that is customer service! read more

My partner had bought a sticker from here a few weeks ago and put it on his reusable water bottle. Unfortunately, he left/forgot his water bottle at a restaurant for about 20 minutes and it was stolen! He was super bummed about losing this sticker because he just moved away from Chico. I messaged someone on the store website and they were able to add the sticker I wanted to the website for me to order in a couple of hours. This store is amazing, and carries an eclectic mix of merchandise, unfortunately most of which really appeals to me. Toys, garden supplies, candles, cards, gifts, aprons, kitching ware, men's clothes, shoes, umbrellas, lotions and skin care, kites, baby items, jewelry, sporting goods, yo-yos, books, puzzles, and the most AMAZING selection of toys I've seen in a long time. These are magical toys that spark the imagination, not just the plastic crap you see at Toys R Us. Everything is beautifully displayed and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Prices are reasonable, and given the array of offerings, you'd be hard-pressed to find a similar store anywhere. I love window shopping as much as the next person, but just looking in Bird in Hand's (very cute) windows won't reveal what a fantastic store it is. Like other reviewers have mentioned, this place has a wonderful toy selection. Great things for babies, on up to toys and crafts for teenagers. They also have wonderful gifts for grownups, too. This is a great place to find a present for a grandma, friend, uncle or mom. Of course, it's most fun to find presents for babies here, but those out of diapers will love their gifts, too. In addition to their great toy selection, they have a lot of wonderful books (cooking, gift books, etc.), hats, clothes (for older folks), lotions and soaps, kitchen supplies (VERY cute aprons), wallets, gifty things like magnifying glasses or paperweights, cards, lots of Chico-specific memorabilia--basically just about everything you could want in a store. It's a nice mix of kitschy-cool (Gnomes, anyone?) and just nice stuff. Also, you have to check out the yoyo museum in the back, and their great collection of games. This is one funky little shop. One of a kind, for sure. A Chico original, if you will. I like this place if for no other reason than they have a great selection of Hawaiian shirts. You want some Tommy Bahama? This is your place. Now, if you're not looking for island-friendly clothing, then how about a yo-yo? Yeah, they've got an extensive selection of yo-yos here, and an entire museum dedicated to them in the back. Speaking of yo-yos, there are also a crap-ton of toys available here. Not my kind of store, but this place did bring back many many little kid memories! I was walking around Downtown Chico and many places were closed and I decided to come in here just to check it out! This place is huge and they have so many different types of gifts and toys! It definitely reminded me of the childhood days! What surprised me the most was the yo-yo section they had in the back! They had the biggest yo-yo in the world or something and I saw it, how cool! I am not really a fan of these kind of things, but I must admit it was pretty damn interesting! You can find almost any game or activity that you can imagine here. There is a huge assortment for all ages.I picked up a few games here that I hadn't seen anywhere else. There are also a lot of gift items to look through. The best part of the store is the YoYo museum in the back. There is a giant yoyo, tons of yoyos, and more information on the sport of yoyoing than I ever knew existed. Let me start by stating that Bird In Hand is actually a nice toy store and place for Yo Yo enthusiasts to build community. I have one major issue with this store. They have merchandise that is absolutely inappropriate in highly visible locatoins (e.g. men's socks with deliberate profanity). I was shocked when I first saw this. Used to love this shop until clerks were following me around the store today. I guess I was profiled as a thief because two clerks were following me from aisle to aisle. I guess wearing a hoody and jeans makes you look suspicious in this shop. I just took my last final, and I was looking to get some stocking stuffers for my boys. You know those places you used to go to as a kid that made you feel like you were stepping out of the normal adult world and into something real and alive, like a place that understands you? Well, this place isn't like that for me. But it is for my best friends' 8-year old son, and I think this place would've been like that for me when I was younger too. The people who work here are very cool, and help him to understand what's what, answer all questions, and not patronizing. And this 8-year old gets patronized too much becuase a lot of people today are used to kids being bratty and disrespectful. Not this kid. He's a blast to take places, as long as people give him a chance. And Bird in Hand gets my friends' business every time they come to visit. I've been shopping at Bird in Hand for over ten years (the entire time I've been in this area) - it's my go-to place when I want to find a gift for our Grandkidlettes because I love to give them wildlife-related, old-fashioned, and/or educational toys - things that are unique and that they don't even know they want until they get them! You'll also find decorative items for the holidays, Tommy Bahama sportswear, books, stationary, games, bath and body products, candles, jewelry, and so much more. If you have friends or relatives who are hard to buy for, this is the place to find something they will love but won't be expecting! And as others have said, Bird in Hand is home to the National Yo-Yo Museum, supports the Chico Yo-Yo Club on Saturdays, and sponsors the National Yo-Yo Championships every year in October. read more

They have great educational toys, and practically supply the wardrobe of everyone over 40 at the farmer's market. It's every little kid's heaven! It's huge, and it's entertaining. The staff is friendly, and the museum is very interesting. You can find nearly everything here, from clothes to stuffed animals. You can also find Calico Critters! (Sylvanian Families). They are a rarity and I have been searching all over for them! I love this store! read more
