Being Cal's books, that's kind of a Facepalm question, I know, but I just wanted to get a real person on the line, and am unable to do so. Literal floor to ceiling bookshelves, large space, diverse selection (tons of mystery and thriller books, but not exclusively; I was able to find two Louis de Bernières novels I've never seen in the wild), affordable prices. Even more refreshing, Cal's has a progressive, queer-friendly vibe--something of a rarity in Redding these days. Some used bookstores really blow your mind. Cal's is one of them. The shop has served the Redding area since 1974! The power of the used bookstore, my friends. Incredible. There need to be more spaces like this--open, welcoming, somewhere to expand your mind. This was one of the coolest bookstores I've been to. There was piles on piles of books of all different genres. They also had a lot of comics and superhero stuff if you're into that. I chatted with the owner for a bit and he's a super friendly and hospitable guy. The prices here are reasonable and there's a great selection. A must stop for book lovers. read more

I am completely in love with this bookstore. It's located less than 5 minutes away from my parents house and I am sad that I only recently discovered this bookstore this past year. My dad would have loved this store. Set in the very back of a long warehouse building, you would completely miss it if you didn't already know exactly where to look. As soon as you walk in you are greeted by the comforting smell of old book pages. Every nook and cranny houses a book. There is also a very impressive collection of records and an entire wall dedicated to comic books. I love to take my time slowly prowling each aisle waiting to see which titles jump out at me. Which author or genre is speaking to me during the visit. I find myself drifting in a calm and cozy headspace as I explore and peruse. I recommend you call before you go. The first day I went during business hours, but it was locked up/closed. There's a sign on the road, then you have to drive to the end of the row of shops, parking stalls right in front. Large selection of used books, all individually priced, most of the ones I looked at were in the $3.50-$4.50 range, some newer ones were more expensive. The employee was a lot friendlier and chattier with some other customers than with me, but I was there for the books, not the banter. My mother used to buy and sell books at this place - for years and years this was the only place she bought books (I think Cal may have still been running the store, not sure). My mother passed away, leaving behind several hundred hardback novels and piles of soft cover books. While in the process of clearing out the house, I called Cal's Books to make sure they were still buying (or even accepting donations)... The "gentleman" who answered the phone was really arrogant and told me to tell him some of the authors (these books range from 1950s to contemporary). As I started to go through some of the books, he interrupted me and said "naw, it doesn't sound good." The person I spoke with on the phone was rude and condescending. I am not writing this review only because my mother was a regular here for decades - I'm writing it because I want other people to know that they just might have to deal with a complete idiot who answers the phone at a (what used to be) a wonderful book store. read more

Best bookstore I think that I have EVER seen! I was in awe when I walked thru the door and saw so many, many books on floor to ceiling shelves and then some. Books were in alphabetical order according to category which must of taken the owner quite some time to do, again I've never seen so many books in one place. I LOVE THIS STORE !! It is definitely worth the trip and time to visit. Great prices, wide variety and a super knowledgeable and friendly store owner. And for such an out of the way bookstore there were no lack of customers while we were there. And, it appears that there are a lot of regulars of which I will now be one of them. I bought Astrophysics for people in a hurry, the case for Mars, and a book about our solar system and all for the price of what the first book normally costs. I can really tell Cal wants to share his love of books and reading with the world. There are book shelf's from the floor to the ceiling and more books than there are shelf's. THE BEST BOOKSTORE EVER! We first drove by yesterday and, sadly, it was closed. I asked the storeowner next door and apparently, Cal occasionally takes Mondays off, sometimes Tuesdays. Basically, if he's not there by 12:30pm, he's not likely to be there that day. Made sure to call today and YAY! The store is open. I wasn't sure what to expect because the store resides within a storage unit... very unlike any used bookstore I've been to. Then we walked in and we were greeted by 6010693760194760109395 books. Literally. The further we walked in, the more books we saw. It was utterly amazing. At least 5 spacious rooms filled with books from floor to ceiling. Many of the bookshelves also had books protruding from them and wooden planks connected free-standing bookshelves together. What were on those wooden planks? Books, of course. The books are a bit pricey but it's good to support mom and pop shops. Some books can be bought for stellar prices, such as travel guides. We asked Cal how long it took for him to amass his collection; it took some 40+ years! Such an impressive collection and eclectic store. He clearly loves books and for bibliophiles such as us, we will certainly be back for more books! read more

I've been looking for a genuine locally owned used bookstore. Cal's is overwhelming but in the best way possible. It seems like you would get lost and not be able to find anything but that is wrong. Everything is clearly and easily labeled. The customer service is great. I browsed for a minute but when I needed help they knew exactly where to go. I was just sad I couldn't spend hours there. I really really love this book store. The guy who works there (I am horrible with names) is super knowledgeable about every single thing I have asked him, which has ranged from childrens books, to WWII to scifi to Stephen King. He has never not known the answer. The shop is floor to ceiling books. Literally. There is something for everyone in this store. My husband who usually avoids books actually buys and reads from this store. I live all the way across town, so I always call ahead just to make sure he is open. He has a tendency to be closed on some Mondays. Normal hours are 10:30-5:30 Monday through Saturday. read more
