I heard about Basilico years ago (pre-COVID) from family who loved it. So when my cousin suggested we have dinner here on Saturday since it's halfway between our homes, I was excited! I was happy to see how lovely the place looked and unfortunately, it went downhill from there. Service was rushed and unfriendly. The waiter, although competent, looked and acted as if he was just trying to get through the night. Each time we finished a course, the busgirl would pounce on our tables and frantically remove dishes and silverware. I should note that we were there early at 6:00 so the place was not packed. Now for the food... * Appetizer: calamari was flavorless and the marinara sauce just tasted like tomato sauce. Caesar salad was edible. * Wine: I was surprised when the waiter told us that they only serve half bottles or full. Half bottle selection was limited so I couldn't order what I really wanted to drink. * Main course: I ordered the sole special ($40). The fish was over cooked and the flavor was nonexistent. I couldn't taste the garlic (which was the reason I ordered it). My daughter ordered the Fusilli con Cavolo ($25) and that had more flavor, but was too salty. * Dessert: Tartufo Trio was the best thing that we ate here! I also ordered the chocolate soufflé and that was just ok. It had a side of whip when it really needed a side of chocolate ganache to give it more flavor. The bill came out to over $165 (with tip) for me and my daughter. They also charged $4 extra because I used a credit card. This surprised me. Usually upscale restaurants don't nickel and dime you, even in this COVID era. I would not ever go back. I think Basilico's hey days are behind them. Their food is overpriced, unappetizing and flavorless; and their wait staff makes you feel rushed throughout your meal. read more

I had the calamari and the spicy shrimp pasta. They didn't have much of a drink menu. Only 1 name brand of wine and either white or red chardonnay. The calamari didn't have any seasoning or flavor and was very hard to chew through, didn't seem cooked enough. The pasta needed salt and pepper added to give some flavor to it. They only go by reservation and seem to try to cater to a certain crowd. The menu is also a bit over priced for there to be such a lack of flavor for the overall meal. this restaurant hits all of the high notes per ambiance, service, and food quality. run, don't walk to this restaurant. this is one of the best italian restaurants in the state period. they pay attention to the little details here and are accommodative if you bring a few bottles of wine and need extra glasses and space. i love the menu here. so many choices that i am interested in. when was the last time i said that? and if you don't see it on the menu, they are happy to make it for you. this restaurant is extremely well run with a well trained staff. you won't want to leave. the food is excellent! and the prices are more than fair......seriously! can't wait to go back. read more

I have been aware of Basilico for a few years now, given that they are located adjacent to the parking lot for Millburn Deli, which is a place I have visited a plethora of times. For whatever reason though, just never took the plunge and tried it. That all changed last week when I stopped in for dinner. The space is warm and inviting. It has an upscale feel, but the owner is a very jovial and gregarious guy, taking any potential pretense out of the air immediately and ensuring that his customers are comfortable and happy. My wife and I weren't ravenous, so we opted to share a bunch of apps. We gladly dove in to the bread basket and accompanying condiments, which consisted of a sun dried tomato dip, a hummus-like dip, and butter. We also were happy to find that they offer a modest selection of California wines, both half bottles and full. Most of the local businesses are BYO only, so this was a nice surprise. We opted for the burrata and tomato salad, grilled baby artichokes, arancini (rice balls), and shrimp scampi. The first two were served together, and the second two were brought out afterward at the same time. Round 1 was excellent. I've never met a burrata I didn't like, and this was no exception. The artichokes were to die for, so tender and flavorful. Round 2 was not as impressive, but still tasty. The shrimp dish was great, loaded with garlic and very savory. The rice balls, sadly, were not executed well. They had clearly been refrigerated (frozen?) and simply reheated prior to service, and the reason I know this is because I had several bites from the middle that were cold. The flavors and texture were right, but the temperature was decidedly not. I give them a pass, but that was a bush league error that could easily have been avoided. Overall, we enjoyed the atmosphere, professional service and delicious food. This was not a surprise to me given the area we were in, but the prices are a bit steep for what you get. $90 for 4 apps and a half bottle of wine is a tad aggressive, but I'm not complaining. I would likely return, but perhaps for lunch instead of dinner. If you're in the area, it's worth checking out. read more

This place was decent for a local meal out that's slightly fancier in style than your normal Italian restaurant. The menu options were mostly seafood but lots of pasta options too. Cacio pepe while tasted good but definitely not the real deal- way too buttery/saucy rather than cheesy. Chicken Parmigiana was so tender, cheesy and had good flavor so advise to order that. The complimentary bread was fresh and delicious. Limited wine menu but husbands glass smelled a little funny even after they replaced it. Basilico is a wonderful upscale restaurant. The staff are friendly and welcoming. But the food is definitely the star. My husband and I have been here many times and never been disappointed. My husband always has the Blue Point Oysters and swears they are the best he has had anywhere. I enjoy the Caesar Salad with boquerones, a type of white anchovie that is not salty, delicious. We usually order specials for dinner, last night my husband had Black Sea Bass which he said was delicious. I had a lobster, mushroom, pasta in garlic sauce that I loved. The pastry chef is wonderful, her desserts not only taste good, but look beautiful. read more

We came here for my daughter's birthday in June and I've been meaning to write a review every since. We ate inside and were a party of 6. We got a great table and wonderful service. We brought our own wine and beer. They also have a limited wine selection. The food was excellent for everyone. The deserts were fantastic and they made a big deal about decorating my daughter's desert for her birthday. Very good experience. We dined here for our wedding anniversary dinner and loved every moment! The service was excellent. They set up tables in the alley way to help socially distance and the atmosphere is so lovely (feels European). We got the gazpacho, fig salad, gnocchi and linguine and clams and everything was delicious!! I eat a lot of Italian and this restaurant was top notch. Upscale but not too pretentious, delicious food with an interesting menu and reasonably priced for the quality of food and service. My family and I wanted to come out for a nice New Years dinner This was our first time walking threw these doors. We were excited and wide eyed to see the area, that is until we were finally experiencing it all. The staff that was standing behind us judged us for asking for another tray of bread. The waiter whispered the specials to us but loudly projected it to the other tables. They Did not explain the dishes to us, which resulted in us ordering somethings that didn't even look appetizing. We were the very first people to enter when they opened at 5:00p.m but we're the very last to get our meals. We filled up in bread and butter and sparkling water. We ended up being starred at and judge by a family literally sitting an inch away from us and when we complained to the manager all we got told is "there's nothing they can do about it." (Why not move our table or even theirs?!) After our food finally came the staff constantly came up to our tables to ask us about flavors we didn't even get to taste yet as we were just picking up our forks and napkins. It was unprofessional and not very customer service friendly. Never again, ALOOT of money down the drain tonight. read more

Food is consistently good. I have been coming here for many years, and I have had great experiences and not-so-great experiences. The only negatives are that on Friday/Saturday nights when it tends to get REALLY packed, sometimes it is too loud for us. On other evenings, or for lunch, it is usually a great atmosphere- not too noisy, still gets crowded though so I suggest reservations. I recommend every dish on the menu, I particularly like the wild mushroom soup (note- if you are a vegetarian, this soup is made with chicken stock). Ask what the souffle of the day is. I had the strawberry souffle twice and it was heaven. Literally like biting into a puffy perfectly made cloud, with the most outstanding vanilla bean sauce on the side. DELICIOUS! read more

We were just at the basilico for dinner and the place was great. For appetizer we had their long stemmed artichokes which simply melt in your mouth. For mains and the reason for coming here were their pasta dishes. Their carbonara is made properly with raw eggs, guanciale (cured pork cheeks) and pecorino cheese. Simply and savory dish that could rival any in Rome. I had their Zinfandel with it which was too robust for my taste and next time will go with their cab. The other dish we tried was orecchiette con salsiccia e cime di rapa. Here the home made sausage, broccoli rabe and thick ear shaped pasta take center stage. Spectacular. This restaurant hits it on every level. First, atmosphere: we loved the ambiance and the warmth. The white linen tablecloths, the lighting and the spacing of the tables is just right. The service was excellent. Noise level was just right. Our waiter was attentive and very professional. We also loved the pace of service - a very nice gap between salads and the main course. We did not feel rushed. The food was phenomenal. Quality and preparation were both fantastic. My wife had the eggplant Parmesan and I had the truffles with sausage and pappardelle. So incredibly good. Lastly, the value. TREMENDOUS. It was $150 for the two of us for salad, main, dessert and coffee. Give them the quality of the food, the service and the atmosphere, this was an excellent value. Mario, the owner, made a point of stopping by our table. Nice touch. And we are very happy it is BYO. Love coming here with my family as locals! Their pastry chef is very accommodating. There was a time when they ran out of a certain dessert we ordered, and she personally came to our table to apologize and offered something else special off the menu. That really shows they care about their customer's experience. The owner is usually in the restaurant helping out and greeting regulars. It does get a bit noisy during the weekends (as most do), and sometimes the waiters aren't that friendly/outgoing (hence the 4 stars instead of 5), but aside from that it's great here!:) read more

I searched for a restaurant that was renowned for being a top rated establishment, with a romantic setting. I was celebrating 25 years of marriage with my wife, so it needed to be special. Basilico was a popular recommendation, almost can't miss, so that was our choice. Nice atmosphere, with open windows and plenty of space; very Covid-friendly. Our waiter looked a bit out of place and not at all familiar with the menu. We found out later this was his first day. However, I made it very simple for him, since both my wife and I wanted the same thing. We ordered the scallops. When our food arrived, our plates did indeed have scallops, but also included shrimp, which I am allergic to. As such, we informed the waiter, and he acknowledged it was his error. Apparently, there was another item on the menu that featured both scallops and shrimp. Mistakes happen, we were frustrated, but waited patiently for them to correct their mistake, and provide us with what we ordered. After another 20 minutes or so, the food arrives. Mine was correct, but my wife received the same incorrect plate as before. An offer was made to give them a third chance, but it was our anniversary, and couldn't wait another 20-30 minutes for another attempt. It was unfortunate since my scallop dish was among the best I've had. My wife "settled" for the scallop/shrimp dish, but the damage was done, and we had to call the meal disappointing. To cap it off, the establishment, although mildly sympathetic, did not make it right by giving us anything for their mistake. We were charged full price, which really upped the disappointment. My wife ended up sharing some of mine, and didn't finish hers. So, we shouldn't have been charged the $34 for the dish she didn't order. My compliments to the chef, but I will not be returning. A 25th anniversary only comes along once, and I am very disappointed with how we were treated. read more

Delicious Italian food and great staff! Basilico's was able to accommodate our group of about 20 people last minute with no reservation for dinner on a Wednesday night. Everything was delicious but my favorites were the burrata appetizer, the homemade gnocchi, and the eggplant parm. For dessert I'd recommend the tartufo- the hazelnut ice cream is great. The only thing I would say if the pasta portion is quite small for the eggplant parm, definitely ran out of pasta before finishing the eggplant. read more

We were the ONLY diners on the balcony yet they squeezed 11 of us into tables they pushed together. We were on top of each other and had to ask to add one of the other empty tables. We ordered our sodas, which arrived 30 minutes later. After we got up to look for our waiter to remind him. We asked for another basket of bread, which arrived 20 minutes later. . After we received the food and sodas, more time passed, and I pointed out to the waiter that we ordered our food 45 minutes and we still weren't served. Very frustrating for all of us. read more

If I could give this place 3.5 stars I would. I ate dinner here on a recommendation of a friend who enjoyed the food. I ordered the sweet potato ravioli appetizer portion it was only ok the sauce lacked flavor it needed more butter. For entree I had the grouper and instead of the potatoes it came with I ordered it with sweet potato gratin. The grouper was fresh and a very generous portion, but had no seasoning. The green sauce that came over it had no flavor whatsoever. For dessert I ordered the chocolate cake with chocolate ice cream that was decent. On the positive note the atmosphere is very nice, and so was my server. Prices were very reasonable here as well, and they serve large portions which is also a plus. The lasagna was not like any I have ever eaten or seen. It consisted of about 20 layers of homemade spinach noodles. Freshly made pasta noodles. Very thick. Very rich. So thick and rich they welded together to form a cinder block. No cheese. No crispy edges from the hot oven. There was a mortar of meat sauce that acted like glue between the layers. I couldn't eat it. To my own responsibility I should have sent it back when the manager asked how I was enjoying my meal. It's a nice ambiance and I ordered a side of meatballs because I was still hungry and they tasted good. Just don't get the lasagna. read more

Basilico, I'm in love with you, and it's serious. Driving through the charming main street, we decided to further explore and came upon this spot among the many cute and some trendy looking outdoor cafes and brunch spots. Lined with shrubs of real basil, we headed inside to a beautifully decorated and huge sized room that was packed on a saturday afternoon, couples and families alike. We decided to sit outside and enjoy the glorious summer day. I was in the mood for my favorite, beet salad, and my friend had the crab and shrimp salad. We just knew it was gonna be good. And then I saw the beef... as if I'd seen the light. Kobe beef carpaccio, arugula, parmesan shavings, with slight whispers of an apple dressing. OMGaaa... truly one of the best things I have ever tasted in my entire friggin life. I could've had 4 more of these platters in one seating. The beef, like butta. A very generous amount of cheese and arugula on top and that dressing, which was placed so randomly. One bite had it, the next maybe not... and then when ya had it again, full on syncope. I'm not done. We were not going to have dessert bc when you get to the top, you don't want to come back down. However, the fondue called to us. Deep dark velvety chocolate, the richest I've ever tasted, came surrounded by fruit, pastries and cake. Definitely big enough for two to share, and the sauce... this sauce again stirred sensation. I could go on and on about the food. A little about the venue... aside from the cute outdoor seating, and the beautiful interior, there's a patio in the back. Each individual bathroom stall has its own mirror with light. While there is no alcohol served, which we did miss out on a mimosa experience with our meal, it is still an extraordinary place. It is still hopping! You can bring your own and there's a wine and alcohol store located conveniently nearby. The service is on par and very attentive. And the prices, very reasonable! $44 complete meal for two?! unheard of, esp for all that it offers and the feeling you get dining here. Went back here recently and unfortunately the meal did not live up to our previous 5 stars. This round was 3 stars at best... The service was good, but the food disappointed a bit. Three of the seven entrees were chicken parmigiana - for some reason all of them were about half the portion we got on our last visit. Then I ordered the Gran Cartoccio di Mare which was absolutely flavorless - plus the prawn really just grossed me out. None of the meals this go round made anyone say, wow this is amazing. They had me sold on this place on my first visit, but now I'm questioning going back because, for these prices, you have to be exceptional and consistent. Two words: Consistently good. There is no shortage of Italian restaurants in Northern NJ and they range from inexpensive pizza joints to high end northern and southern Italian restaurants. Few, however, deliver the same quality and service whether you're looking for a simple lunch, a quiet more upscale dinner for two or fabulous group dining experience like Basilico. We love the BYO option here as well. The menu offers plenty of options and they have seasonal specials that they literally plan daily as of 4:30pm each day. Their salads are delicious, grilled seafood spot on, meat preparations done almost to perfection each time...and their desserts are really delectable. The squid ink pasta frutti di mare is for sure a winner every time. The servers will make great recommendations and let you know which pastas are homemade. We have even ordered take out and it has always been really good. I am constantly amazed how good the entrees are to go! If there are any knocks to one of our favorite go-to Italians in the area, they are that the creativity factor isn't exactly soaring off the charts and the service/food can be occasionally spotty on a very busy Saturday night. They also could use a larger space because the locals all know this is the best place in town! read more
