Stopped here for lunch with a friend, quiet on a Friday. Staff had us sit where we liked. The bubbles weren't ready, so no bubble tea for me this time. Service was simple, water with flavored mint? leaf. The miso ramen I tried with egg (extra $2). Egg was cooked perfectly, no issues there. Ramen noodles were firm and good. Miso in the ramen was light, I could've used more of it to add flavor. The pork was unfortunately just tough. Not melt in your mouth but rather too lean in some areas and too fatty elsewhere... not a good balance or make. Likely will try another type later with chicken - maybe the Black Garlic next time with thicker noodles? Easy to split the check.
Plenty of seating on a Sunday evening with fast service. Satisfied my ramen craving with their signature Sum Ramen dish, which was delicious! It was the perfect amount of spicy and the meat was tender. Unexpectedly, the corn cheese was the highlight for me! It was a good size to share between 2 people. A great place to catch up with friends with yummy food.
Stopped in with two toddlers on a Tuesday based on Yelp reviews. Service and food were excellent. Ordered the black garlic ramen and miso ramen. They offered me a kid size option for a few bucks less which is not listed on the menu. Both were very flavorful and satisfying. Black garlic fit our tastes more since it came with thick wavy noodles vs the thinner/straight noodles in the miso. Pork belly slices were huge and a lot more pieces than any of the more authentic Japanese places I've been to. My picky kids ate surprisingly well, which was the most important of all. Based on taste, portion size, value, and the fact that my kids ate so well, this may be the best ramen I've ever had.
Just down the street from the Paper Mill Playhouse, Sum Ramen is a small Japanese food joint with perhaps 3 booths, 4 tables for 2, and an unfortunately pre-fab vibe inside. It's perfectly comfortable, but the wood paneling on the walls and "chalkboard" menu come off fake. On a Friday afternoon, I was the only diner until a couple showed up mid-meal. Luckily the waiter wasn't weird about it. The original point of my trip was to try the ramen, but as it was a 90-degree day, I found myself tempted by the tan tan mazemen with cold noodles. I asked to substitute chicken for the pork and they didn't blink, which was a good sign. I started with the tofu bao bao, which each consisted of two very flat fried tofu patties, lettuce, a creamy mayo-based sauce, and a sticky, sweet soy glaze. Unfortunately these were not the starter I was hoping for. The tofu ate very dry and the broken buns meant that soy glaze leaked all over my fingers. I can't say that the mayo sauce was especially memorable either. The tan tan mazemen was much better. I loved the hard sear on what looked like a flattened, pounded chicken breast. It was dense, it was juicy, it was crusty. Fried lotus roots brought a starchy, chewy element to the party, and the greens and shaved chilis brought coolness and heat, respectively. I'd come again to try the ramen. If I hadn't had the buns I'd be more positive overall, but every Japanese restaurant should really have buns on lockdown.
Love that they have GF options. I got the black garlic GF ramen. In order for it to be GF, it must come with chicken and initially I was a little let down but honestly was pleasantly surprised once the ramen came. The chicken was tender and there was a LARGE portion. Noodles were great too. I did notice a heavy salty-ness in the ramen so that was probably the biggest downside although it was very flavorful. I also got a matcha latte with brown sugar and it wasn't overly sweet; however, the tapioca boba were too small and on the harder side, not the large gummy ones I'm used to. Overall, still a great meal. BF was a big fan of the scorched edamame as well so this place seems like a winner to us!
Average ramen spot-- good for a quick, casual meal. The decor was cute and clean. The service was ok. I ordered pork buns as an appetizer, but I think our server forgot to put them in, so when our ramen came, I canceled them. The ramen was yummy, but for the price, I was expecting more.
Food I'm giving a 3 out of 10. I drive 25 minutes here for bland ramen. It had absolutely no flavor at all. I couldn't even take notes than 4 spoonfuls. I even tried adding some hot sauces and it was still bland. I told the waitress and she looked at me confused asking me if I ever had taken before lol. Even If I never went to Japan I'd still give this place a 1 star. Horrible service and horrible ramen. Won't be visiting again. Ambiance was ok. Usually the smaller locations has the best ramen but not this one.
Great food and attentive service. The young gentleman helping today was just a kid but he was well mannered. We ordered spicy tan tan ramen and I totally must have missed the tonkotsu broth part. I ordered this at another restaurant and it was soupless and I was expecting the same. Had I known I probably would have tried the sum ramen instead. Nevertheless it was still tasty. I did like the broth. I also ordered a side of shishito peppers and it was salted very well, a bit too much for me but I enjoyed it.
I went on a mother child date night, with my cuties! And this spot was perfect! The service was wonderful, they knew exactly what I would need with the kids and came with extra bowls/ extra napkins and forks and spoons! We ordered the vegetarian ramen with veggie broth (1 Regular and 1 spicy) and they were both perfect! Just the right amount of spice for both me and the kids! Plenty of veggies and tofu and noodles! We end up with a lil togo :). We also ordered the tofu bao bao and it was yummy! The kids got edamame as well and everyone ate everything without a fuss, Which was amazing! The staff was nice and the place was clean! We will go again and again for sure.
Stopped by for lunch with the family on an Saturday early afternoon. Which was empty until the tail end of our meal which was closer to 12:30 PM. The dishes took awhile as they seemed to have a few takeout orders to make in advance. Space is decent, with a few booths and stand alone tables with the open kitchen view. They had an AC wall unit but it was pretty hot in the restaurant and even before we started eating. We ordered: Black garlic ramen (4/5) Broth was delightful, portion was ample plenty of soup and noodles and all other parts of the dish! Taking a point away for the pork which was over cooked and the use of spinach versus Asian vegetables Ox tail ramen special (3/5) ample portion and ox Gail and as good but taking away points for the broth which was a bit bland by comparison and again spinach instead of Asian veggies didn't hit the mark for us Beef short rib ramen with gluten free noodles (due to egg/dairy allergy) (3/5) The noodles were ok and meet again was more well done than Desiree broth was good though and they were kind enough to split it across two bowls for the kids. Staff was friendly and helpful. Overall 3/5 due to the fact that the dishes just didn't meet the expectations of the price tag. It's not a bad spot just pricier at $60+ for the 3 bowls with tax and tip. If you do come I would order the black garlic one hands down the best of the three. Not bad but not great.
First time visiting Sum Ramen, located in the heart of downtown Millburn. You have access to street parking as well as a big parking lot right opposite the restaurant. We made a reservation prior to coming in as it was a weekend. Ordered chicken ramen ( replaced beef ), vegetable ramen curry style, mapo tofu and some appetizers - steamed edamame, wings, Tofu bao buns. The edamame were amazing and were favorite among the appetizers. While on the mains, surprisingly the mapo tofu was the most liked in comparison to the ramens. The curry ramen lacked seasoning and salt unfortunately. The staff were friendly and the service was quick. Expected the ramen to be a lot better in terms of flavor looking at the reviews, but Ive had better ! Overall fun experience and decent food.
Stopped in for weekend lunch after a day at the Essex Zoo. The restaurant was small, but comfortable. The ramen was good, but I've had better pork belly. The edamame was delicious though since you can taste the char from the grill. Service was good, but it was pretty busy when we arrived. Metered parking lot across the street was very convenient.
Stumbled on this place because I was in the area and I am so happy I did. The ramen was so good I don't even have pictures. I am not really sure of the service because I ordered to go. When I walked in the place it was packed and the vibes seemed chill and relaxed. I would definitely try this place again if I am in the area. The ramen is definitely on my top 5 favorites.

Pass by this little ramen shop many times and decided to give it a try today. They opened at 11:30 so I was there right when they open.. the store is not huge, but with cute decoration on the wall with hand drawn picture of ramen and simple menu.. and with some Asian style decor on the other wall.. I ordered a black garlic ramen and a kids meal (katsu) for my son, they came pretty quickly and they look delicious!! My son's katsu is super hot and crunchy (he said he doesn't want to eat it prior the food come, and ate 1/2 of the chicken!!) that means did you great!!! Rice was a little hard to be honest and corn was ok.. I kinda put them in my ramen.. the black ramen was good.. lots of spinach and thick piece of pork (chasiu).. soup was thick but not too thick!! Noodle was cool perfectly.. only thing is I have to pay to get the egg, but it was cook perfectly!! My son agree since he ate the entire egg.. would definitely come back again.. I wonder if it would get super busy at lunch time since they don't have too many tables (10 maybe), they might be a line out the door.. but 11:30 was a great time!! And parking is just across the street!! read more
Popped in for a late dinner, about an hour before closing. We were seated immediately. Restaurant was nicely lit, tables were clean. Ordered a strawberry lemonade, fried gyoza (with chicken; not pictured since I was starving and ate it too fast), dumplings (also with chicken) with crispy onions and bean sprouts, I got the miso ramen (with chicken...appears to be a theme), and my GF got the Katsu Curry (yep, theme confirmed. Came with chicken). Fried gyoza was an easy 5/5. Perfectly cooked and the dipping sauce was divine. Will definitely order again. Dumplings had a nicely-sized piece of shrimp along with ground pork inside. Dumpling skin wasn't too thin and wasn't too thick. The sauce they came in was also quite tasty. 4.5/5. My miso ramen was delish. Broth was savory, ramen noodles had a nice chew...would also reorder. 4.5/5. My GF 's Katsu Curry...she said it was decent enough but it was kind of bland because there wasn't enough curry sauce. She gave it a 3/5. All in all, we both said we'd be back. Next time I'm sure she'll try a ramen dish instead, I'll probably reorder what I got this first time. read more
I guess I give this place overall a 3.5, instead of just a 3. This place caught my eyes as an asian restaurant in the area and relatively good ratings, but felt that everything was pretty average. I went with a group of 3 and all ordered ramen and the karaage appetizer, but the karaage was just slightly crispy and barely had any flavor, the sauce really saved that dish but definitely would pass on that dish. All 3 ramens were average. The pork cha shu was tender though which was the highlight, but overall broth was pretty standard. Particularly my miso ramen didn't have that much flavor. Service and staff was a bit slow, but food came out pretty fast. Overall not bad, but will probably give this place another go sometime and try some of the other dishes. read more

This is the ONLY place I go to for ramen given its cozy vibes and great, fast service. For food - My boyfriend and I shared the Chicken Bao Buns which were delicious. I ordered the Seafood Ramen which is always flavorful and includes a diversity of seafood - shrimp, scallops, calamari, and clams. My boyfriend ordered the Beef Ramen and the beef was so juicy! read more

Dined In, as I wanted to experience hot food. The woman that served me i can tell she is manager/owner .. as her people & attentive skills was high quality in dealing with me & others. I wanted to get something besides the beef ramen and the game plan was to get the Miso Chicken. But I couldn't, I learned they had gluten free ramen(at no upcharge) I decided to stay with my usual. It was EXCELLENT and filling. Yelp rated this place very high and they were spot on. This will always be my number one go to for ramen in Essex County. read more
Pretty great find! Loved the steamed buns (bao). We tried the shrimp one and the first bite was like a flavor and texture explosion! Soft bread, crunchy shrimp and the sauces created a party in your mouth. The brand stamp was a very creative way to serve. The ramen were on point. And served steaming hot. Will definitely return. Super good. Got the tonkotsu with extra egg, also requested them to add some spice. We also got some gyoza which we agreed was yummy. The server was attentive and the restaurant was very cute inside. Looking forward to going back already. read more

The ramen was pretty good. Not a bad alternative to Ani Ramen. Ordered to go and everything was packed well so it didn't spill. Was able to reassemble as if I were in the restaurant. The broth had good flavor and not salty. I actually had too much broth which is a good thing. Rather have more than less to make sure it covered the noodles. Someone prior had bragged about the veggies but I wasn't impressed. Too raw tasting for the ramen. read more
Stopped by here on a rainy day, which is always the perfect excuse to grab ramen. It was around 4-5pm so wasn't crowded or anything and there were plenty of parking spots right across the street. One thing I really loved about this place was you didn't need to pay for literally every topping, which has slowly become a trend for a lot of ramen places. Did it come with the typical seasoned egg? No. But let's be honest, do you really need that in every ramen bowl or is it for your phone/camera? We enjoyed everything we had from the spicy edamame (does have a little kick) and fried pork gyoza (despite it being upside down) for our appetizers and both of our ramen bowls. Definitely would stop by again if I'm in the area and recommend you to too. read more

If you're in the mood for ramen, but don't feel like driving into the city, this is a great spot!! We go to a LOT of ramen places, so I feel like I have a pretty good idea of ramen spots in the NY-NJ area. We ordered the pork chashu bao buns and then the sum ramen and black garlic ramen. When we came, it was a cold, rainy day--perfect for ramen! Also perfect for not having a crowded dining room--we were the only dine-in customers! The pork chashu buns were just okay. The chashu is the same as what they put into the ramen. In the buns, they had a bit of an off-smell, but tasted good. They were tender, not very fatty though a bit bland. The chashu sauce helped greatly and it balanced out the buns. Overall, it was just okay, but nothing to rave about. The two bowls of ramen, however were pretty great! I had the black garlic oil and it was SUPER flavorful. They must have off-days with people claiming it tasted bland--this was FULL FLAVORED. I love salty foods and this was perfectly seasoned for me. I would actually argue some might find it too salty for their tastes. The chashu softened in the warm broth, and the veggies were cooked perfectly (read that: not overcooked!). I got the additional soy egg, and it was PERFECT. Sometimes eggs are over or under cooked, but this had that perfect jammy yolk, and nicely seasoned with the soy sauce mixture. I prefer spicy miso at other ramen places, but I really enjoyed the tonkotsu flavored broth. The fried garlic was also a perfect complement to the meal. Overall, this has been one of my favorite ramens (and if you look at my profile, I have an entire collection dedicated to ramen). The sum ramen was also very flavorful. It's a true SPICY ramen (most places claim spicy but are not). My hubby ordered this one and loved it. He did note it was pretty spicy, but he loves spicy foods. The decor at this place was very cute and reminded me of a bookstore in Tokyo. Very cute! I will definitely come back here for ramen if I'm in the area! read more

I ordered through Uber Eats for pick up, and it was ready when I got there (around 20 minutes). The inside was not too crowded, but the lunch hour just began. Pick up was very seamless. The food was great but just a few things to note. The portions for some of the items were very small. For example, I ordered a side of shrimp, and it was 4 pieces. I also ordered sides of cabbage and spinach which were small as well. I do recommend the steamed vegetable gyoza and Bao Buns (shrimp). They were very good but be careful if you order steamed gyoza because they fall apart pretty easily and stick together. Overall, I recommend this place! It's also a few stores down from Liv Breads if you want a sweet treat. read more
Sum Ramen is a good option if you are crazing ramen and want something better than the supermarket packaged ramen, but don't want to venture into Manhattan for really great ramen. The selection at Sum Ramen is good, but lacks the truly amazing flavors you would expect from great ramen places. Their spicy ramens, which they denote by are only a touch spicy and might warrant only a half . Overall they try hard and have quality ingredients. read more

Sum Ramen, located in Millburn, offers a pretty good selection of Ramen. We had the black garlic Ramen and Spicy Tan Tan Ramen and both were pretty good. If I had to compare, the thinner noodles in the Black Garlic were ether, but the broth of the Spicy Tan Tan was better. We also had some Bao buns and those were excellent! It was fairly crowded but the service was still very good. I recommend Sum Ramen if in the Millburn /Union area or before seeing a show at The Paper Mill Playhouse read more

If I would have just tried the ramen, I would have given a 5 stars. But the bao buns brought the rating down one star. They were very dry to my surprise! The first bite had so much lettuce/cabbage and barely any sauce. The quality of the pork chashu in the buns were good...just lacking flavor/sauce. The ramen, on the other hand, was bursting with flavor. Excellent amount of spice (my nose was definitely running) but not overly spicy. You can make it more spicy by asking them. The broth was excellent. Definitely get kimchi on the side - they have true Korean kimchi - not some knockoff ShopRite kimchi. I will def return to get more ramen! read more
On a cold day like this. This Ramen hit the spot and was very satisfying. I got the signature Sum Ramen which consists of Pork chashu, cabbage, wood ear mushroom, corn and crispy onions. Complemented by chicken broth w/ Sum's house- made hot & spicy paste. The noodles are the thick ones. All I can say is that I'm good for the rest of the day. Flavorful and the broth is light. Had the right amount of spice to it. I was very satisfied!! I also got an order of the boneless Karaage Chicken and that too hit the spot! read more

I like to think I know my ramen having ate (too much) ramen in Japan and having been to many ramen shops in NYC that originated from Japan. Here's my review. Short take: ok ramen, decent appetizers, nice vibe and service. Long take: Appetizers- had the pan fried pork gyoza and karaage chicken (not pictured). Gyoza was soft but crispy at the bottom (but reminded me of the frozen ones I can get at the Asian supermarket). Karaage came out hot and was juicy. I'd recommend getting this one. Ramen- my boyfriend and I got the Black Garlic ramen (main takeaways below) Noodles- we both liked this! Thin, wavy noodles cooked aldente. Decent amount of noodles in here. Chasiu- more meat given than most places, and on the thick side as well. I prefer my chasiu to melt in the mouth, but this one is meatier. I feel like they use pork tenderloin versus the traditional pork belly, but I could be wrong. Broth: Decently flavorful. Good amount of black garlic oil. Egg ($2 add on): salty. Traditionally the egg is sweet and salty, but this one just taste like it's marinated in soy sauce and nothing else. read more
