I guess I give this place overall a 3.5, instead of just a 3. This place caught my eyes as an asian restaurant in the area and relatively good ratings, but felt that everything was pretty average. I went with a group of 3 and all ordered ramen and the karaage appetizer, but the karaage was just slightly crispy and barely had any flavor, the sauce really saved that dish but definitely would pass on that dish. All 3 ramens were average. The pork cha shu was tender though which was the highlight, but overall broth was pretty standard. Particularly my miso ramen didn't have that much flavor. Service and staff was a bit slow, but food came out pretty fast. Overall not bad, but will probably give this place another go sometime and try some of the other dishes. read more

Pass by this little ramen shop many times and decided to give it a try today. They opened at 11:30 so I was there right when they open.. the store is not huge, but with cute decoration on the wall with hand drawn picture of ramen and simple menu.. and with some Asian style decor on the other wall.. I ordered a black garlic ramen and a kids meal (katsu) for my son, they came pretty quickly and they look delicious!! My son's katsu is super hot and crunchy (he said he doesn't want to eat it prior the food come, and ate 1/2 of the chicken!!) that means did you great!!! Rice was a little hard to be honest and corn was ok.. I kinda put them in my ramen.. the black ramen was good.. lots of spinach and thick piece of pork (chasiu).. soup was thick but not too thick!! Noodle was cool perfectly.. only thing is I have to pay to get the egg, but it was cook perfectly!! My son agree since he ate the entire egg.. would definitely come back again.. Stopped here for lunch with a friend, quiet on a Friday. Staff had us sit where we liked. The bubbles weren't ready, so no bubble tea for me this time. Service was simple, water with flavored mint? leaf. The miso ramen I tried with egg (extra $2). Egg was cooked perfectly, no issues there. Ramen noodles were firm and good. Miso in the ramen was light, I could've used more of it to add flavor. The pork was unfortunately just tough. Not melt in your mouth but rather too lean in some areas and too fatty elsewhere... not a good balance or make. Stopped in with two toddlers on a Tuesday based on Yelp reviews. Service and food were excellent. Ordered the black garlic ramen and miso ramen. They offered me a kid size option for a few bucks less which is not listed on the menu. Both were very flavorful and satisfying. Black garlic fit our tastes more since it came with thick wavy noodles vs the thinner/straight noodles in the miso. Pork belly slices were huge and a lot more pieces than any of the more authentic Japanese places I've been to. My picky kids ate surprisingly well, which was the most important of all. In order for it to be GF, it must come with chicken and initially I was a little let down but honestly was pleasantly surprised once the ramen came. The chicken was tender and there was a LARGE portion. Noodles were great too. I did notice a heavy salty-ness in the ramen so that was probably the biggest downside although it was very flavorful. They had actual gluten free ramen. The chicken miso, vegetarian, and seafood ramen broths are all gluten free. And they give rice noodles that don't fall apart instantly! It's not nearly as good as real tonkatzu ramen, but since I can't have that, this was a nice alternative. I preferred the seafood ramen a little bit more than the chicken ramen. The chicken miso ramen was also good though. I appreciated that they wrote on the carton that the chicken was made crispy with rice flour! Just down the street from the Paper Mill Playhouse, Sum Ramen is a small Japanese food joint with perhaps 3 booths, 4 tables for 2, and an unfortunately pre-fab vibe inside. It's perfectly comfortable, but the wood paneling on the walls and "chalkboard" menu come off fake. On a Friday afternoon, I was the only diner until a couple showed up mid-meal. Luckily the waiter wasn't weird about it. The original point of my trip was to try the ramen, but as it was a 90-degree day, I found myself tempted by the tan tan mazemen with cold noodles. I asked to substitute chicken for the pork and they didn't blink, which was a good sign. I started with the tofu bao bao, which each consisted of two very flat fried tofu patties, lettuce, a creamy mayo-based sauce, and a sticky, sweet soy glaze. Unfortunately these were not the starter I was hoping for. The tofu ate very dry and the broken buns meant that soy glaze leaked all over my fingers. I can't say that the mayo sauce was especially memorable either. The tan tan mazemen was much better. I loved the hard sear on what looked like a flattened, pounded chicken breast. It was dense, it was juicy, it was crusty. Fried lotus roots brought a starchy, chewy element to the party, and the greens and shaved chilis brought coolness and heat, respectively. I'd come again to try the ramen. If I hadn't had the buns I'd be more positive overall, but every Japanese restaurant should really have buns on lockdown. read more

Food I'm giving a 3 out of 10. I drive 25 minutes here for bland ramen. It had absolutely no flavor at all. I couldn't even take notes than 4 spoonfuls. I even tried adding some hot sauces and it was still bland. I told the waitress and she looked at me confused asking me if I ever had taken before lol. They had an AC wall unit but it was pretty hot in the restaurant and even before we started eating. We ordered: Black garlic ramen (4/5) Broth was delightful, portion was ample plenty of soup and noodles and all other parts of the dish! Taking a point away for the pork which was over cooked and the use of spinach versus Asian vegetables Ox tail ramen special (3/5) ample portion and ox Gail and as good but taking away points for the broth which was a bit bland by comparison and again spinach instead of Asian veggies didn't hit the mark for us Beef short rib ramen with gluten free noodles (due to egg/dairy allergy) (3/5) The noodles were ok and meet again was more well done than Desiree broth was good though and they were kind enough to split it across two bowls for the kids. Staff was friendly and helpful. Overall 3/5 due to the fact that the dishes just didn't meet the expectations of the price tag. We made a reservation prior to coming in as it was a weekend. My daughter had the miso ramen. It had way too many bean sprouts. Oxtail ramen was ok, but the meat not tender enough. The chicken wings were so tiny... Yes, service was great. But the price is simply too steep for what my family had. I understand it is Millburn, hence the price probably. If you're in the mood for ramen, but don't feel like driving into the city, this is a great spot!! We go to a LOT of ramen places, so I feel like I have a pretty good idea of ramen spots in the NY-NJ area. We ordered the pork chashu bao buns and then the sum ramen and black garlic ramen. When we came, it was a cold, rainy day--perfect for ramen! Also perfect for not having a crowded dining room--we were the only dine-in customers! The pork chashu buns were just okay. The chashu is the same as what they put into the ramen. In the buns, they had a bit of an off-smell, but tasted good. They were tender, not very fatty though a bit bland. The chashu sauce helped greatly and it balanced out the buns. Overall, it was just okay, but nothing to rave about. The two bowls of ramen, however were pretty great! I had the black garlic oil and it was SUPER flavorful. They must have off-days with people claiming it tasted bland--this was FULL FLAVORED. I love salty foods and this was perfectly seasoned for me. I would actually argue some might find it too salty for their tastes. The chashu softened in the warm broth, and the veggies were cooked perfectly (read that: not overcooked!). I got the additional soy egg, and it was PERFECT. Sometimes eggs are over or under cooked, but this had that perfect jammy yolk, and nicely seasoned with the soy sauce mixture. I prefer spicy miso at other ramen places, but I really enjoyed the tonkotsu flavored broth. The fried garlic was also a perfect complement to the meal. Overall, this has been one of my favorite ramens (and if you look at my profile, I have an entire collection dedicated to ramen). The sum ramen was also very flavorful. It's a true SPICY ramen (most places claim spicy but are not). My hubby ordered this one and loved it. He did note it was pretty spicy, but he loves spicy foods. This place is superb. I have taken to Sum Ramen as a go-to for lunch and frequent delivery at home for me and my family. The in house service is efficient, warm and welcoming, and the room is immaculate. Home delivery is typically at least 10 minutes ahead of schedule, and I've yet to receive an order with anything missing. The ramen dishes, particularly the black garlic, are beautifully flavored and fresh tasting. Bao bao buns (pork chashu is my personal favorite) are a must. On a cold day like this. This Ramen hit the spot and was very satisfying. I got the signature Sum Ramen which consists of Pork chashu, cabbage, wood ear mushroom, corn and crispy onions. I like to think I know my ramen having ate (too much) ramen in Japan and having been to many ramen shops in NYC that originated from Japan. Here's my review. Short take: ok ramen, decent appetizers, nice vibe and service. Long take: Appetizers- had the pan fried pork gyoza and karaage chicken (not pictured).
