We saw that this place was open until 2am on Saturday night, so we gave it a try. Although we got there around 1:07am, we were sad to find out that the dining room had already closed and all orders could only be taken to-go. The transportation of our food to our hotel room likely decreased the food's tastiness and appearance, but overall still a great meal for the price we paid. I chose to customize my pasta and it was yum! I have heard good things about Basil Pasta and want to try it while it's fresher next time, while dining in. This is a great littlw hole in the wall I discovered in Vancouver. It wasn't very far from our hotel and since the hubs likes Italian I figured it would be a good option for us. It was! As I mentioned, it is tiny inside. However there is seating. We ordered at the counter and when it was teady they brought it out to us. As you can see from my photos, the portions are large. You definitely get your money's worth and the quality is good too. I had a lot of veggies in mine so it looks bigger while the hubs went with just meat sauce. Decided to give this a try because it's open late and near where I was working that evening. I really wanted to like it, but the execution was underwhelming. The environment was not the most comfortable either - there was an unpleasant smell that I noticed when I was standing at the register to order, though I thankfully could not detect it from my table, and it was very chilly inside. The staff was friendly, though. I ordered the coconut cream ravioli without the chicken and a tiramisu. With the ravioli, I found the sauce to be pretty bland (even after adding black pepper and red pepper flakes), which is not what you expect or want from something called "curry cream" sauce. The garnishes of fresh basil and coconut flakes were missing, which was disappointing since some fresh herb would have contributed massively to the flavour. I had no problem with the ravioli and how they were cooked, but the asparagus were still a little fibrous. You can see into the kitchen, so I could watch them sauteeing the vegetables to order, but I would guess that most of what they use is either frozen or from a can because they did not taste fresh. I did like that there were lots of vegetables. I just felt that the dish fell way short of what it could have been. It was $16.45 and a big portion, but I'm not sure if it was worth it for something that I know I could've made better at home without a ton of work. The tiramisu was fine (and also pretty big - I would actually want to share this if I was dining with someone else), but while the pasta for dine-in came in a plate, this came in a plastic takeout bowl with the lid on, and the cream on top stuck to the lid when I took it off. What's pictured is my attempt to reconstruct it. It seems a shame to ruin the presentation like this when they could've just served it on a plate and kept it intact with no wasted plastic. If I give them another chance, I will order something with a red sauce and see if it comes out better. read more

The meatballs you can tell were from a frozen bag of meatballs. The Alfredo sauce was lousy and the kids refused to eat it. The only thing slightly edible was their pasta with meat sauce. I got two long strands of hair in my shrimp pesto pasta. The pasta was also cooked well past al dente and was super mushy. Flavour was also lacking. I've heard great things about Basil Pasta so I wanted to see what the hype was all about. We chose to dine in. Unless something changes, we're realistically never dining in here ever again. Realistically not going to get take out either. I'm not the type of person who leaves bad reviews unless there's reason to. Unfortunately, this review is warranted. First red flag: None of the staff wore masks. None. Second red flag: There was no request for our vaccine passport when we said we would be dining in. Third red flag: When the delivery individual came in to pick up their Uber order, none of the staff bothered to interact with them, even though there were at least 5 staff members working, and there were clear signs asking the delivery individual to check in with the staff before leaving with the food. Fourth red flag: When the food was brought out, the staff continued to remain unmasked. Fifth red flag: our order was made incorrectly. When we brought it up and asked for the missed items on the side (we didn't want to request for the dish to be remade altogether) the staff in the kitchen said the missing ingredients were in the dish, despite the fact that it was very evident that the dish did not contain the ingredients in question. The lack of masks and disregard to the public health order was already beyond problematic. The gaslighting about the food was the final straw. What differentiates this place apart from others is that they have a set price for everything and lots of options to choose from, which makes it a great spot when people are wanting quick food for a reasonable price. Knowing all of this, I can see why people enjoy it. If it weren't for the inaccuracy of the dish, the massive concerns regarding safety, and the poor customer service that involved lying... I would've also enjoyed it too. ... perhaps it was this location? I'm going to give the Burnaby location a try in the future. Hopefully it'll be better. TL;DR: if you're not a fan of masks, you might like this place. If you're looking for a place that is abiding by the public health orders and taking steps to keep everyone safe, go elsewhere... or order take out. Visited a friend in Yaletown last night to catch up before he left for the Holidays. He picked Basil Pasta Bar and frequents the spot often and I have not gone in over two years, even when I worked close by. We arrive around 6:30pm with two other customers waiting for pick up and a slew of online orders (ie. Skip the Dishes, Door Dash, Uber Eats, etc.) rolling in. Basil Pasta is a no frills pasta joint where you sit yourself and place your order & pay at the back register. They then call your name when your order is ready and hand you your food. Utensils and napkins are at each table for self-serve purposes. My friend and I both ordered the create-your-own-pasta from $9.95 and up. I got the gnocchi (+$1) with rose sauce, shrimp, lots of veggies (tomatoes, garlic, onion, mushrooms, spinach, corn, zucchini, and red peppers), goat cheese, and all the herbs (basil, oregano, and parsley). My order came out to $13.95 so I paid, sat at a table with my friend, and waited for our order to come. The order took around 10 to 15 minutes and was served to our table. The pasta was a good portion and smelled nice but upon eating the first bite my rose sauce was super watery (seems like they didn't cook the vegetables first to get most of the water out BEFORE adding the rose sauce) and the gnocchi tasted off. With each gnocchi I tried it was either too chewy (over cooked) or a bit dry (under cooked). I didn't want to complain, as my friend was enjoying his meal, but this was one of the worst pasta dishes I've ever had. It's never good when you're sitting in front of one of the hardest dishes to screw up (though, to be fair, gnocchi is harder to cook than other pastas like spaghetti) and are thinking how you could have made it so much better yourself. Now I know why I haven't been to Basil Pasta in over 2 years - the quality of the food has gone way down since they first opened the Davie Street location. Am giving Basil Pasta two stars as the portion size is decent, there was a fair amount of shrimp in my pasta, and the price wasn't too expensive. However, you can pretty much get much better tasting pasta anywhere else. Trattoria has $13 pasta specials on Tuesdays, Anton's pasta tastes better and has much larger portion sizes, and even Old Spaghetti Factory pasta sauce does not come out that runny and at least their meal comes included with complimentary bread, tea/coffee, and ice cream. My suggestion would be that you're better off cooking pasta at home, or go to another pasta joint to get something bigger and better. read more

I really like the concept of this place: pick the pasta, your protein, and your toppings, and your sauce. It was a bigger portion that I expected for the cheap price. The girl ringing us up was very friendly. I ordered my pasta with the curry sauce, and although I didn't really love the flavor (it was better with a little bit of salt and pepper), I enjoyed my meal. I was pretty satisfied afterwards without having to spend so much money. If I was ever in the area again, I would definitely give another pasta dish with a different sauce a try. read more

This place is so good, I ate there twice in 2 days. I had their gnocchi in Alfredo with mushrooms, garlic, bacon, and meatballs one day and the next I had their gluten free pasta with meatballs and red sauce. The red sauce was a little spicy but that could have just been that particular day because the Alfredo was fine. The restaurant is small and cozy. The service is so quick and most importantly the portions were big for the price. They have a big variety of pasta. You pick your pasta, pick your sauce, and pick your toppings or you can order a pre-designed menu item. I regret that I didn't have more time to try one of everything. read more

You can also create your own pasta dish, which is really convenient if you have a specific flavour in mind! --UPDATE!!-- So I tried it again, and once more I was disappointed!! This time, they did give me the correct amount of meat. HOWEVER ..... -Sauce I ordered ( pesto and marinara ) was not what I received. I am not sure what it was, but there was NO pesto in it whatsoever. It was a brownish colour so it was not marinara! I just picked out the meat and whatever veggies I could salvage. I was VERY let down. How could this place screw up so many orders when the specifics are imputed via their website ? The only things that didn't mess up was the tiramisu and the Diet Coke. My salad was great aside from the monstrous amount of goat cheese on the top ( and the lack of dressing ) but I would rather have this then too much dressing. I don't know what to say. One of my 'go-to's' when needing a quick cheap fix for pasta. Usually you go to a place, the cost is going to about $14, give or take a few more dollars, including sitting in and forking out a tip, so coming here makes sense. Whether you choose something on their vast menu, or go for the 'Create Your Own' for $7.95, this place is cheap, but good for the price. They make the stuff once you order and pay up, so you know they aren't spooning the sauce out of a vat that has been laying on the fire the entire day onto pasta that has been lying around for a long time. The place is small, but can fit around 20 people, some high tables and chairs, and some bigger group tables, with some front end seating for people watching along the street of Davie. Let's get to the main difference here, the 'Create Your Own', it doesn't limit you to one sauce, one meat, two veggies, NO, just pile it on, and see what comes out, as you can go all-out weird if you choose, or have the exploring nature to see if white sauce works with spinach, bacon and chicken and throw down some banana peppers for added punch. It's how you choose it, and they make it right on the spot, whether you eat in, or take out it's hot and fresh to order. Brought my brother here once, and even had some take out for my sweetie prior to her flight to Asia, as I thought she wouldn't get much of any pasta over there. Really rough experience. We saw the bad reviews and should have avoided, but we were in a desperate situation looking for pasta the night before a half marathon. I got the herb linguine aioli and the Caesar salad. The pasta was totally flavorless and hard. The Caesar salad was over dressed and limp. Seemed like maybe the dressing had been added earlier that day. Other members of the group built their own pasta. They were all severely disappointed as well, and had weird things in their pasta they did not order (onions, something we think was an artichoke heart?). Been to places that let you create your own pasta before - and Basil just doesn't match up. I got their Curry Chicken Fettuccine (but replaced chicken with chorizo sausage). My pasta was way too hard still - the seasonings were not mixed well at all (some areas of the dish didn't have much taste at all, others had way too much flavour...) The presentation wasn't great either, as my friend's pasta didn't look like it had much sauce at all and looked just coated with some red sauce. Their salad comes in a good portion and was delicious though. All in all, nothing special. Can get better pasta elsewhere for just a little bit more. read more

If you love pasta, but on a budget, this is the place to be! I prefer eating in way more than ordering it for take out primarily because of the experience and the portions. As for service, they're super friendly! I love getting the spaghetti or and pasta dish that has a noodle base. I found that pasta that is wrapped in something for instance, the ravioli, they give you a lot less portion wise. So I'd stick with anything from the spaghetti to the linguine. It's definitely a must try place if you're in Vancouver. Budget friendly and amazing tasting! Good bang for your buck! read more
