Was visiting and went here based on a recommendation. Great service and super cute place. Loved the buffalo cauliflower - nicely fried and almost fluffy. I had the coconut chicken bowl - beware because it is SPICY. Great flavors, good portions, and spicy. Did not really like the tomato salad. Tomatoes were not firm and it was watery overall. Still, I'd recommend it overall! Btw: if you have mobility issues, you'll want to dine inside as there are stairs required to the patio. We didn't know that and there is no hand rail either.
Came here for dinner. Great vegetarian and vegan options. No meat/seafood is fried so no cross contamination of vegetarian fried items. Got the sweet potato fries with the vegan ranch dressing. That dressing deserves a 10. So good. I also got the vegan Caesar salad. It was good, nothing special. My friend got the basic bowl and said it was good. Our server was sweet and friendly. Inside was open and airy. Would come back to try other things if I was visiting longer.
We had a wonderful dinner at Basic Kitchen, located just a short walk from King Street. The restaurant has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere that feels very community-driven and intimate, making it a great spot for a relaxed dinner. When we visited on a weekday evening, we were seated quickly with no wait! We started with the corn ribs, which were honestly one of the BEST appetizers we've ever had! They had the texture and flavor of ribs but were made from corn and served with an incredible chipotle dipping sauce that brought everything together perfectly! For our main dish, we ordered the spinach and feta pita, which was warm, gooey, and packed with flavor. The pita was stuffed with spinach and feta, making it rich and comforting--almost like a warm hug. It also came with a fresh side salad that was tangy and refreshing, which balanced the richness of the pita really well! I do wish that the pita was a bit more flavorful on the inside, not just the outside. My husband also ordered an Old Fashioned and said it was excellent. Overall, the food felt incredibly fresh and thoughtfully prepared. If you're looking for a cozy spot in Charleston with fresh ingredients and great flavors, this place is definitely worth visiting!
I would 10/10 recommend Basic Kitchen to anyone visiting Charleston! Perfect for brunch or lunch after walking on King Street. It's a sit down brunch spot with a warm atmosphere. I'd make a reservation. Staff was very respectful of food allergies. Good vegan options. Very inclusive menu. I highly recommend the sweet potato fries. My boyfriend and I still talk about how good they are!
A wonderful Mother's Day lunch! All of our food was fantastic. The sweet potato fries MELT in your mouth. As someone who has to avoid gluten, shellfish, and dairy, this place is so wonderful for all food restrictions and they have many safe options for me to eat. I also highly recommend their mocktails! Our service was great, staff were friendly. Sitting near the front window was such a treat with the beautiful flowers behind us in the flower box.
My mom and I came in on a Friday afternoon and were able to be seated right away. The outside of the restaurant looks like something you would walk right by, but the inside was bustling. It is decorated beautifully and has high ceilings. Just from looking at people's food as we were being seated I could tell this was going to be a fantastic and fresh meal. Our server greeted us and first asked if we had any allergies she should know about. While neither of us do, I thought this was a kind gesture. I was also able to observe all the servers and the hostess working together to make the whole restaurant run smoothly, with everyone helping out where they could. I ordered the Shawarma Bowl and my mom ordered the Good Burger with a Golden Latte with espresso and coconut milk. When asked if my mom wanted avocado on her burger she said no, but it still came with avocado and we were charged for it. She was not too upset though because she agreed the avocado should have been on the burger. Overall the food was incredibly flavorful, fresh, and creative. If I ever have the chance to dine in Charleston again I would definitely come back here, as the whole menu looks enticing!
What a cute place, and I didn't even see the section that is outdoors! The food is simple, delicious, and cohesive. Our server was in the final weeks of her pregnancy and feeling it, but was so sweet and attentive. I do wish they had more options on the food menu. The beet margarita was interesting and the Negroni was incredibly strong. It was reasonably priced. I'd eat here again.
This was such a fun brunch for our party of four! We were seated on the patio and had perfect weather in Charleston in November. Our server was very sweet and friendly and took great care of us. We had a few different folks come check on us/bring food over/clear the table, and I always appreciate those table touches. The beet margartia was really tasty and not too sweet, and it's just such a beautiful color - you can't beet it ;) Breakfast was delicious and we were all very happy with what we ordered. Both the veggie (good) and regular (naughty) burgers were tasty and the sweet potato fries were just AMAZING. I had the "conscious cowboy" plate and it was super unique and tasty. The corn ribs were such a good treat - you have to try them. Easy to eat, perfectly cooked and season, great to share with the table. We hung out and took our time enjoying the meal, and everything was awesome.
This place was giving almond mom, in the sense that it was healthy and had well-balanced meals. Plus, there were options that could accommodate everyone's dietary needs. The Cauli Wings didn't quite meet my expectations, felt like we've had better. Unfortunately, the chicken in the shawarma bowl was way too dry to eat. However, the rest of the bowl with its sauce pairings was pretty good.
The vibe and atmosphere were trendy and dark. It was romantic, in that respect. I'd heard great things about the mocktails, so I was disappointed to be served one that came prepackaged in a bottle. Don't get me wrong- the phony Negroni was delicious but not exactly the gastronomical delight I'd been expecting. We shared the cauliflower wings, which were great. Then I had the veggie burger and sweet potato fries, which were also tasty. My husband enjoyed the burger, but didn't think it was as good as it should have been for that price. The server was very kind, but I think he was a bit overextended because service was very slow. We'd finished our drinks and wings when he finally turned up to ask if we wanted entrees. Considering how exhausted we were from a day of sightseeing, we wished we'd been in and out a little quicker. Although I can't fault him for considering the possibility that we wanted to linger. All that to say, it was fine.
Different & VERY GOOD! Good crowd but not at all noisy. Most excellent service by Bryan! Nice beverages, Banana Bread, Corn Ribs to start. Smoked Salmon toast YUMZ. Amazing tastes of Veggie Bowl and Chicken Sausage. And now for the Chocolate Tahini Tart!! If you've never been, STOP, DROP and ROLL IN!!
Sweet potato fries were offered on the house when the kitchen notepad an extra ordered. Very nice start, and they were good - thick, soft and lightly seasoned. Fattoush salad with grilled salmon - a reasonable size portion. Did not finish, due to filling up on the fries.
We had been looking forward to trying Basic Kitchen because we'd heard such great things about the food, and overall it lived up to the hype--but the service unfortunately fell short. We had a reservation, were seated promptly, and received water right away. After that, though, we waited about 15 minutes without anyone checking on us and eventually had to wave someone down just to place our food and drink order. When our server came over, I asked whether the strawberry matcha had any added sugar in the strawberry purée. Instead of answering the question, she responded with, "Well yeah, it's strawberries," in a noticeably dismissive tone. I clarified that I was asking whether there was added sugar, and while she eventually answered, the interaction felt unnecessarily curt. Unfortunately, that attitude continued throughout the meal. The disappointing part is that the food and drinks were excellent. The salmon bowl was our favorite dish--absolutely fantastic. We also loved the kombucha, the fresh juice and coconut water drinks, and the matcha. The kitchen clearly knows what it's doing, which made the service experience even more unfortunate. I'd absolutely come back for the food, but I hope the service is warmer next time because it didn't match the quality of everything coming out of the kitchen.

this place was so cute! they said the wait was 30 minutes but it ended up only being 10, which i love! the ambiance was so adorable and the service was wonderful. i ordered the matcha and the small green salad. the food came out before the drinks. i'd rate the matcha a 6/10, it wasn't as sweet as i hoped. i'd rate the salad a 7/10 without lemon, and a 9/10 with lemon! it was a really refreshing salad and i would definitely go again, i recommend! the only reason i gave it a 4 out of 5 is because we just had salads, i NEED to try the other things on the menu. read more
A great experience and one I wish I could give 4.5 stars for. The atmosphere is nice and clean with minimal decorations. Our waitress was so personable and knowledgeable. I took a half star away because the sweet potato fries that came with the burger were cold and the quinoa that came with the Basic Bowl was not fully cooked. I can't recommend the cauliflower wings enough... literally the best I've ever had. Otherwise we had a great experience and can't wait to come back! read more

We started with the Corn Ribs (local corn, slightly spicy dry rub, vegan Alabama BBQ sauce, and green onion garnish) and Cauli Wings (tempura fried cauliflower, vegan buffalo sauce). Two of us choose the vegan Good Burger with sweet potato fries. One ordered the Vegan Cesar salad, and one chose the Salmon Bowl. Our vegan guests already knew what to expect and loved their choices. Our non vegan guests choose vegan dishes and we're over the moon with the taste, texture, and filling nature is the food - they thought they would be hungry after the meal! No such experience, everyone was full and happy after dinner. Sorry, the pics I took after we had already started to eat. Our server was very attentive, and very upbeat. She checked in on us often enough, and was knowledgeable about the food when we had questions. The building is a nice space just status from CoC. Larger than it seemed at first glance. Great spot for lunch!! Me and 2 girlfriends dropped by for bite after our long walk and the wait was not too long for a Saturday. Our waitress was kind and our food came out pretty quickly. Such a nice area with lots of natural lighting and vibrant atmosphere. I enjoyed my good burger, I'm a big beef burger girl but the vegan patty was delicious! My meal left me happy and satiated and I was still able to function afterwards to do my errands. Will come back again - I know my mom will love this spot. read more
Great spot for a healthy break from all of the rather heavier eateries in the area. Our favorite item was definitely the corn ribs! Didn't realize the menus change on the weekends as we came specifically for the thai me to the moon salad but would have to return on a weeknight next! Make a reservation if you are coming here on a busy weekend night. The staff per Charleston were so friendly and I liked the open kitchen where you see everyone putting out food. The back patio is the perfect place to sit on a nice night because it's so scenic and has heat lamps so you won't stay cold. We got the vegan burger and the vegan cesar salad and they were perfect. Staff was checking in with us and making sure we had what we needed. Super considerate about any allergies we had too. The sweet potato fries were the highlight of the meal and we only wish that we got that as an appetizer so we could have had more of that and the ranch. read more

Update: As promised, I returned to basic kitchen, it took a while, but here I am. We came to celebrate a birthday after a workshop in making candles at nearby Candlefish. The menu is absolutely beautiful and the food that we chose was excellent. As I said before, the decor and vibe here is really chic and hip. We love the whole experience once again and will continue to return. read more

I loved my visit to Basic Kitchen! Navigating Charleston as a vegan is a little challenging and Basic Kitchen's menu is so friendly to a vegan lifestyle. The aesthetic inside was beautiful with cloth napkins set at the table and a bright well lit dining space. Our server was cheerful and so helpful pointing out what options are already vegan and what could be made vegan. I ordered the corn ribs (which are vegan) and the Basic Bowl (also vegan). The corn ribs were FANTASTIC! A must try even for nonvegans. The creamy sauce was perfection and the corn kernels fell off the cob. The Basic Bowl was pretty good but I would probably order something else in the future. The charred vegetables were perfectly cooked. The chickpeas were nothing special. The sauce was a little too tangy for my liking. I honestly would have preferred the sauce on the corn ribs poured all over this bowl. Overall I left extremely well nourished and happy. I will make sure to revisit when I come back for another Charleston vacation. read more

I had a LOVELY experience here at Basic Kitchen. I would like to firstly thank our server Tessa for being such a light. She was so happy to serve us and ensured a great experience. I found this restaurant while looking for gluten free friendly restaurants for my friend with Celiacs. And wow did they deliver. The sweet potato fries were prepared in a designated gluten free fryer. And they were DELICIOUS. The vegan ranch was also life changing, I don't know how they make it but it's magical. I enjoyed the Kale Caesar with the most perfectly prepared salmon filet on top. The spicy mango margarita was both beautiful and delicious, and not too spicy! I loved the vibe here, it's perfect for girl dinner. And the bar was cool and groovy if you choose to sit there instead of a table! read more

Service was excellent, salad was tasty but the $28 salmon bowl was light on salmon, heavy on carrots and cabbage. And what's with the extra $4 charge for avocado?!? After my $78 meal (iced tea, iced coffee, salad and salmon bowl with avocado), I did not feel like I got value for my $$. read more
Beautiful courtyard that is dog friendly! Our server was wonderful and accommodating. The food is locally sourced and, supposedly, is healthy. I ordered the Spinach and Feta sandwich with honey. It was exceptionally rich and greasy. The feta melted and was more like stringy mozzarella. The flavors were great but it was hard to eat, I felt unhealthy after I was done. The shawarma was ok but did not resemble anything someone from the Middle East would know. read more

After a long 5 hour drive from GA, we made it just in time for opening to try this place out! We were immediately seated. And provided water and drinks We ordered a burger, curry with chicken, chicken bowl, and kids pasta. Everything was delicious!! Service was excellent. Basic Kitchen is a modern restaurant with modern vibes and modern takes on food and your food needs. They are willing and ready to accommodate whatever your needs are and do a great job of it. Basic kitchen is also lighter fare and unless you order a large variety of items you won't leave being unable to walk. Which isn't a bad thing but portions are definitely controlled well. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious, some appetizer meatballs, pesto pasta and a veggie burger. All made to perfection and delightful to our taste buds. Anything but basic. Great restaurant w local produce serving both vegetarian, vegan and omnivore food. I opted for striped snapper that was well cooked - pan seared w crispy skin and tender flesh. On a bed of citrus glazed mushrooms that were excellent. Had the grateful grapefruit mocktail - one of 5 - that was really refreshing and delish. Extensive cocktail list that looked tempting and nice selection of organic wines. Only disappointment was dessert - made dairy free Almond cake w strawberries was overly sweet and the sponge was soaked in sauce. This is not a style I care for. But props to the server - she took one look at the uneaten dessert, asked if everything was OK and then if I had specific feedback that she would give to h the kitchen - AND removed the item from the bill. I spent many hours going through Yelp searching for a good place for our 28th anniversary dinner. FYI: Charleston has many wonderful restaurants! After my intense search, I settled on Basic Kitchen. The menu looked good and the reviews were great. FYI: make reservations ahead of time. We arrived around 5:30 or so. Upon arriving we were given the option of outdoor seating or the bar. It was a rainy day and the temperature had dropped, so we knew outdoor seating wouldn't be pleasant. We were told the tables were reserved for 6:30 dining. We opted for bar seating. We were warmly greeted by the bartender/server. I first tried the PHONY NEGRONI and it wasn't to my liking. We then opted for the BRIGHT EYES SPRITZY which was more to my liking. We ordered two of the BRIGHT EYES SPRITZY. For appetizer we opted for the corn ribs, and they were delicious! For dinner my husband opted for the snapper and I went with the good burger. The snapper was good. My husband especially liked the mushrooms. He said, he would gladly eat a plate of the mushrooms. My good burger came with sweet potato fries, and the fries were delicious. The good burger was good, but I wouldn't order it again. Service was great. FYI: if you have a reservation, give yourself extra time to find parking. We parked about two blocks away. read more

I had Saturday brunch with my parents here while visiting Charleston. It was a lovely spot that felt very hip and had a cool vintage aesthetic to it. The food was amazing and tasted very fresh! We ordered the lamb burger, surfer delight, cauliflower wings, and a cocktail. I loved the cauliflower wings and the lamb burger came with sweet potato fries which were my favorite! The service was great!! Our waiter was so friendly and helpful with choosing dishes. We were also sat very quickly despite it being a Saturday and a busy crowd. The ambiance is so cute and I loved the vibe. It's a bright space with nice windows, a bar, and outdoor seating. Great spot that I'm glad we came across while visiting!! read more
This is a really cool restaurant and the food is amazing. We came here after the bridge run so you know we were starving! I had the burger with sweet potato fries and beet margarita! I really enjoyed the food! I highly recommend this restaurant. The service was excellent and this place looked like it used to be a former house. Great food and service this morning, I felt appreciated from the time I walked in the door! I arrived as soon as they opened at 11 am on a Tuesday morn Ben (AGM) greeted me at the door with a great attitude and smile. Restaurant is clean, tidy and simply furnished; food was served quickly and flavors are amazing! Andrew not only waited on me yet he helped me navigate the menu. He makes an excellent cappuccino, he's attentive and his recommendation for food was spot on! I'm here for business and so glad I found this spot! This place was so good I went back twice during my short visit to town! There were multiple vegan options to choose from. The corn ribs were a standout item, unique and flavorful. They're light and not particularly filling, so a great appetizer or side to split. The veggie burger is a housemade patty was also amazing with lots of flavor and generous, fresh toppings. read more

Basic Kitchen is prides on supporting and using sustainable produced products which enhance the flavor of their menu. The corn ribs were the best thing to start our feast, with a spicy touch. As an entree I ordered the naught burger, without that many expectations but I gotta say it's one of the best burgers I've eaten this year. The patty was super juicy and cooked to perfection. As for the Cesar salad, the crunch chickpeas give it another dimension. The place was cozy and has an open kitchen. As for the service they were nice and fast! read more

Nice, quaint restaurant with a unique menu. I was there for a working dinner, and the atmosphere was perfect for it. It wasn't too loud, and there was space to combine a few tables for the 6 of us. Our servers were nice and responsive. Our drinks and food orders didn't take long at all to come. We ordered corn ribs and okra for the table. I could've eaten the plate of corn ribs by myself. That's how tasty they were. I'm not an okra person, but everyone else really liked them. My entrée was the Naughty Burger. It was really good and filling. Came with a side of sweet potato fries. Ordered the Grapefuit spritzer mocktail, which was really refreshing. I believe they also have outside seating in the rear. read more

Looking for good eats in Charleston is not difficult, especially when you have places like Basic Kitchen and their numerous healthy offerings. We stopped in and ordered the Yellow Coconut Curry (market veggies, tofu, carolina gold rice, toasted coconut) with an added fried egg. It didn't appear that interesting, but the flavors belied the monochromicity of the dish - each ingredient stood out and added its own dimension to the dish. We also got the Good Burger (housemade vegetable patty, beet ketchup & slaw) with a side of sweet potato fries. And of course, to reward ourselves for eating healthy, we got a slice of chocolate pie and key lime pie to sweeten the deal. Definitely worth it, I highly recommend Basic Kitchen! read more

Cute spot for health conscious dinners. Bright and airy vibe inside and good service. We tried the following: - corn ribs: really liked these, just fancy corn but has some great spices - Sweet potato fries: I'm not usually a sweet potato person but these were cooked perfectly and had a great white aioli sauce on top - Curry: curry is my favorite food but this one was lacking flavor. I enjoyed the vegetable choices and the crispy item in the middle was unique and tasty but the curry was bland. read more
