We were looking for a dinner on the healthy side so gave this a try. It was very busy on a Friday night but we were able to sit at the bar. The bartender was very attentive and helpful with good recommendations. My friend had the basic bowl. It was very fresh and tasty as was my veggie burger. I really enjoyed the beet salad on top and the sweet potato fries were perfectly seasoned. They had a great selection of cocktails and mocktails too. I loved my visit to Basic Kitchen! Navigating Charleston as a vegan is a little challenging and Basic Kitchen's menu is so friendly to a vegan lifestyle. The aesthetic inside was beautiful with cloth napkins set at the table and a bright well lit dining space. Our server was cheerful and so helpful pointing out what options are already vegan and what could be made vegan. I ordered the corn ribs (which are vegan) and the Basic Bowl (also vegan). The corn ribs were FANTASTIC! A must try even for nonvegans. The creamy sauce was perfection and the corn kernels fell off the cob. The Basic Bowl was pretty good but I would probably order something else in the future. The charred vegetables were perfectly cooked. The chickpeas were nothing special. The sauce was a little too tangy for my liking. I honestly would have preferred the sauce on the corn ribs poured all over this bowl. Overall I left extremely well nourished and happy. I had a LOVELY experience here at Basic Kitchen. I would like to firstly thank our server Tessa for being such a light. She was so happy to serve us and ensured a great experience. I found this restaurant while looking for gluten free friendly restaurants for my friend with Celiacs. And wow did they deliver. The sweet potato fries were prepared in a designated gluten free fryer. And they were DELICIOUS. The vegan ranch was also life changing, I don't know how they make it but it's magical. Beautiful courtyard that is dog friendly! Our server was wonderful and accommodating. The food is locally sourced and, supposedly, is healthy. I ordered the Spinach and Feta sandwich with honey. We were a party of three and one was vegan and had a multitude of food allergies. The waiter was amazing, collecting info and double checking with the kitchen to be sure all was safe. The meals were wonderful. When we decided to have dessert, it was decided that nothing on the menu would work with the allergies. Suddenly the manager was at the table offering a custom dessert that DID work. What more can you ask for? I spent many hours going through Yelp searching for a good place for our 28th anniversary dinner. FYI: Charleston has many wonderful restaurants! After my intense search, I settled on Basic Kitchen. The menu looked good and the reviews were great. FYI: make reservations ahead of time. We arrived around 5:30 or so. Upon arriving we were given the option of outdoor seating or the bar. It was a rainy day and the temperature had dropped, so we knew outdoor seating wouldn't be pleasant. We were told the tables were reserved for 6:30 dining. We opted for bar seating. We were warmly greeted by the bartender/server. I first tried the PHONY NEGRONI and it wasn't to my liking. We then opted for the BRIGHT EYES SPRITZY which was more to my liking. We ordered two of the BRIGHT EYES SPRITZY. For appetizer we opted for the corn ribs, and they were delicious! For dinner my husband opted for the snapper and I went with the good burger. The snapper was good. My husband especially liked the mushrooms. He said, he would gladly eat a plate of the mushrooms. My good burger came with sweet potato fries, and the fries were delicious. I had Saturday brunch with my parents here while visiting Charleston. It was a lovely spot that felt very hip and had a cool vintage aesthetic to it. The food was amazing and tasted very fresh! This place was so good I went back twice during my short visit to town! There were multiple vegan options to choose from. The corn ribs were a standout item, unique and flavorful. Nice, quaint restaurant with a unique menu. I was there for a working dinner, and the atmosphere was perfect for it. It wasn't too loud, and there was space to combine a few tables for the 6 of us. Our servers were nice and responsive. Our drinks and food orders didn't take long at all to come. We ordered corn ribs and okra for the table. I could've eaten the plate of corn ribs by myself. After a long night on business travel, even this non-breakfast guy had to have something in his stomach before the next full day of meetings. Enter Basic. The name isn't flattering, but u could tell this place is a hit among the brunch crowd. Standard lineup of elevated brunch dishes which - for me - isn't all that impressive (just not into eggs and breakfast). This is why I was attracted to the special. The grits bowl with roasted lamb and redeye gravy was an obvious choice. Flavor bomb! Lamb was admittedly a little dry, but the gravy compensated. Very interesting brunch special but just what the doctor (might have) ordered. Space was nice. Service was excellent. I don't think the food was spectacular or else I'd have given it a higher score. Looking for good eats in Charleston is not difficult, especially when you have places like Basic Kitchen and their numerous healthy offerings. We stopped in and ordered the Yellow Coconut Curry (market veggies, tofu, carolina gold rice, toasted coconut) with an added fried egg. It didn't appear that interesting, but the flavors belied the monochromicity of the dish - each ingredient stood out and added its own dimension to the dish. We also got the Good Burger (housemade vegetable patty, beet ketchup & slaw) with a side of sweet potato fries. And of course, to reward ourselves for eating healthy, we got a slice of chocolate pie and key lime pie to sweeten the deal. Definitely worth it, I highly recommend Basic Kitchen! read more

We had wonderful, farm fresh healthy food. I had the swordfish tacos which came with a minty cilantro sauce, cabbage and fresh green salad and cucumbers. Loved that the tortillas were whole grain corn, very good. Husband loved his veggie burger with sweet potato fries. He added a sunny side up egg and said that was a great combination. The beet ketchup was a nice addition. We had the almond strawberry layer cake for dessert, this was excellent, the strawberries were obviously local and the cake had some custard like layering and was gluten free. Everything was refreshing and delicious. I was lookin my for a light and nutritious meal - that is exactly what I found here. I had the salmon bowl and their new Basque Matcha cheesecake. BK has been on my radar for a while now. Finally got to try it this weekend. From a culinary perspective, there were a lot of technical details that were really difficult to overlook. Overall, most of the food was super lackluster, however the service was OK. The bad: 1. The cauliflower florets in the buffalo cauliflower are cut too large. Because of this, they don't cook quickly enough when fried. To counter this, BK steams/blanches the florets prior to dredging. This resulted in tempura batter seeping down into the crevices of the waterlogged cauliflower, and creating a spongy soggy texture on the inner channels of the floret. Cauliflour AND Tempura batter are virtually tasteless, so when you have a floret the size of an apricot with only a drizzle of buffalo sauce on it, this is not ideal. I'd suggest cutting the florets into smaller pieces, and dredging raw, then frying. Smaller florets will also have a more appropriate sauce to floret ratio. 2. The sweet potato fries were drizzled with a 1/3 cup of THICK aioli that was not complimentary to their taste. I would have preferred a ramekin of something honey/cinnamon or something spicy like gochujang glaze. I had to wipe each fry on the side of the bowl in order to remove 75% of the aioli. The fries themselves were good, though. 3. The basic bowl was probably one of the most confused dishes I've eaten since being in Charleston. The chickpeas were tossed in some sort of creamy tomato sauce. The broccolini tips were charred to the point I felt like I had a mouth full of sand, and while we were expecting a pulsed chimichurri what we received was a ramekin of a blended herbed dressing. Regardless of the improper technique, it probably would have been good, but because of the tomato sauce was incapable of being used. Since we only ate about half of the bowl, the bartender should have considered just removing it from the bill all together. The good: 1. The short hostess found a spot at the bar for us, despite being on a 30+min wait. 2. The inside is cozy, and likely would have felt comfortable sitting anywhere in the restaurant. Verdict: A look around the room will yield that Basic Kitchen's patrons likely don't have much/any food and beverage or culinary experience. (mostly basic B's out for brunch, or crunchy granola's). It's easy to see why this less than mediocre cafe is rated so high. read more

This is my third time going to basic kitchen and I can honestly say they're consistency with food is what I always rely on! I usually go for lunch. This is my first time for a dinner service and it was a lovely experience. Got to sit outside on the patio and, the overall ambience was wonderful. They even turned on the heat lamps which helped to create a comfortable experience as well. Sweet potato fries are truly the best that I've ever had! The cauliflower wings were also cooked to perfection just enough I have a crunch on the outside, but not deep fried. Both main entrées were good! The steak I will say that it was a bit full of liquid in the bottom of the dish, which watered it a little more than I would've liked, but it was still good.
