This place is a very solid 5. Fantastic food and friendly staff. We decided to give this place a try since they have a good selection of vegetarian and vegan options. We had just flown in and didn't have a reservation. They accommodated us with no problem but I recommend calling ahead if you can. Started off with a glass of house kombucha (wonderful) and a watermelon spritzer (fresh fruit of course), followed by corn fritters and cauliflower wings. Both were expertly prepared and flavorful. Entrees were the Good Burger (veggie) and a vegan Caesar. Honestly the food is so good here. We asked about other vegetarian options in town and one of the servers actually wrote things down for us. The friendliness was genuine by everyone here. Such a nice change from most places. The menu evidently changes regularly and everything is locally sourced. Highly recommend this place. read more

As a non-plant based eater, I was very pleasantly surprised! Went for dinner on a Friday night and loved the atmosphere. Visited at 5:30 the week of Christmas. Sat on the patio with our 2 year old. It was a chilly night, they had the heaters running which was perfect and cozy. The food was delicious. A lot of vegan options, (which I'm not) but the apps I ordered were delicious! And my 2 yr old loved the shrimp lentil dish. "Basically" a great kitchen. Loved the atmosphere and openness of Basic Kitchen. Food was all excellent and well taken care of with shellfish allergy here. Our group of three shared the special salad of the day, fish tacos and avocado toast. We each had a specialty coffee: one espresso drink, a Tumeric and ginger latte and a beet latte which were all very good. I would come here for a turmeric latte everyday if I could. Try it with oat milk for an extra creamy cup of deliciousness! My review is on service alone, FYI. I got here on a Monday around 7:15 PM. There was a man and a woman in front at the host station when I arrived at the restaurant. She was seating someone when it was my turn at the check in counter, and I told him I had 2 people in my party, which he told me I had to wait for her to return. So I waited a couple of minutes, the woman returned, while the guy just kinda stood there, and she told me it was a 45 minute wait (although there was a table free in the corner), so I gave her my number and put myself on the waitlist. My sister and I wandered around the area for 30 minutes and then came back to wait on the benches outside. When we arrived back, I went inside to let them know we were outside waiting now so they didn't have to text me, and the guy was just standing there again. I tried to explain what I was trying to do, and he again told me I needed to wait for the woman. While I was waiting for her, another woman came back with food and it seemed like her order was messed up, so he attempted to deal with that, but gave up when the female host came over. She fixed that issue, then I told her we were waiting outside now, and she said great, got my name again and told me she'd come get us in 15ish minutes. Again there was a free table next to the bar, but I sat outside to wait my turn. The entire 15-20 minutes I'm waiting, there's a woman waiting outside in a car that's running & she eventually gave up and went inside, and then the woman host came outside and looked to have refunded her for her meal. The woman host saw me sitting in the bench and walked back inside. At this point, I didn't have high hopes for this restaurant and was debating about leaving completely, but as soon as I went to stand up to leave, I got a text saying my table was ready. So, I walked inside with my sister. Two customers were standing there, so I assumed they'd checked in/were waiting for their food. I looked at the female host, showered her my phone an said I was checking in, and she immediately turned and looked to the other woman to my right and started helping her instead. So, I turned to the gentleman host to tell him I was checking in and he *again* told me he needed to wait for the woman at the host table with him. He then turned to the woman to my left, started talking to her, and helped her. I was really confused by all of this. I thought perhaps he couldn't help me because he needed the iPad, but as I was just standing there trying to check in to then be seated, the woman host answered the phone and started helping someone on the phone, and the man started running around the restaurant dropping off waters and such. I stood there even more confused for another 2-3 minutes and then finally gave up for real and left. I was never seated, nor tried the food. But I can't not write this review on the utterly bizarre hosts, especially since the man wouldn't ever actually assist me, and the woman looked right at me, went inside to text me that my table was ready and then also proceeded to ignore me. read more

Arrived for a late lunch. While the place is cute, it does have an average cost of $14 for most lunch dishes and the flavors are just mediocre. This was by far my favorite meal of the trip because the drinks were outstanding (ordered their special, which was a floral gin concoction) and the food was to die for. This must be the BEST place in all of Charleston that celebrates vegans and vegetarians. What an amazing selection! We had have everything! The week 3 eggplant salad was unique and amazing! The veggie burger was so fresh, sweet potato crinkle fries were perfection, the bowl was so good and flavorful! The chocolate tart was dense and filling and perfectly chocolate-y. Basic Kitchen in Charleston is... well... a basic (and significantly overpriced) Charleston kitchen. The environment is quite minimalist and well organized, however, the staff - especially the front end - seemed to miss the ball on about every step of our experience. When we (party of 3 21+) entered, the hostess was monotone, and overall, just didn't look like she wanted to be there. Not a hot start. Our waitress was very kind but not very attentive (understaffed much?) to our basic requests - our water glasses were empty the vast majority of our experience there. Their food selections are "hip" but extremely mediocre. Apps amounted to greasy, soft and under seasoned "corn ribs," soggy and well under-sauced cauliflower "wings," and the crab dip came with cold, stale chips and tasted really funky (like there's blue cheese in it, but there's NOT). Entrees were actually quite flavorful, easily the best part here, but really small. My mother's portion of rigatoni couldn't have had more than 20 noodles. I've been living in CHS for 3 years now and this easily fits in the bottom 10% of the places I've eaten at. Won't be returning and definitely would recommend that tourists try somewhere more well-established. OVERALL: Do not get the appetizers!! I cannot stress this enough! Expect kid size portions at Peter Luger prices. read more

We started with their homemade kombucha on tap - this was the highlight! It was absolutely delish. The prices are high, the menu reads great, and the decor is cozy; but the demographic they want to reach has so many options within a 1 mile radius of basic kitchen. Most I think taste way better at a slightly lower cost. I had the Rainbow bowl, the flavors were good but to subtle for me. I was under the assumption I was going to have a "bowl" and rounded lunch by the description. My friend had the avocado toast, which he said was reaally good but also overpriced. My coffee was burnt and he described his Bloody Mary as bland. I will give basic kitchen a second chance and update this review. Just not sure how soon I'm willing to go back. Tip: don't order any of the pickled small plates apps, not very good and overpriced for a few slivers of pickle. read more

My mother and I are visiting from California and we loved this place so much that we went twice during our short stay in Charleston. We loved that there were so many non-meat options, that the fish is all wild caught, meat is sustainably raised, produce is locally sourced and best of all some of their produce is actually grown in their onsite garden!! Our favorites were the beetballs (a vegetarian twist on meatballs), cauliflower wings, and fish of the day meal with salmon. On our second visit to the restaurant, we considered sitting outside but the weather was a bit chilly so we at first told the hostess we'd prefer inside. My mom still wanted to see the garden so we walked out to take a look before we sat down and a server immediately came over to greet us with waters. We apologized and said we were just looking but he was SO nice and SO accommodating that we decided to sit outside after all. James turned on the heaters for us to make sure we were comfortable and went on to provide us with the best dining experiance we have ever had. The tables outside are actually wooden picnic style benches surrounding four large planter boxes in the center of the patio where the vegetables are grown. The atmosphere was so nice and so relaxing and we are SO glad we decided to dine outside after all. Thank you James for making this such a memorable evening for us! It has a great laidback atmosphere that caters to those who like to eat healthy without breaking the bank. During the fall I enjoy eating their mushroom risotto, but during the summer I like a burger ($10 on Tuesday!) or a basic bowl. Their cauliflower wings are also delicious! We each got our own entree, he had the pesto pasta and I had the vegetable curry over brown rice. My entree was great, I really enjoyed it. I was bursting at the seams and could barely finish it. My husband enjoyed his pasta, I tried the pesto and it was perfect. Fresh and a great mix of seasoning. Our server was so sweet, her name was Chris. She was on it with refilling our waters and taking our order. There was no wait and we arrived around 6:30pm on a Saturday night. It didn't get super crowded all evening, there was always at least one table open. The atmosphere is casual with a great calm ambience. It focuses on providing good healthy options that are adaptable for almost every diet. Very fresh. I love that they offer tofu for salads because it provides such a great protein source.
